Wings For The Thought Bird, A quien no le amarga… Dulce, incluso agridulce… Originally from Devon, the English singer-songwriter John Smith got his start playing bars and clubs in Liverpool, both with his own songs and as a side player for artists like Lianne La Havas, Lisa Hannigan and David Gray. Growing up with folk music and guitar music influences from Eric Clapton to Maria Callas to Nick Drake, John's sensitivity as a player is one of the cornerstones of his music, especially when it comes to his live music. It's earned him a passionate fanbase ever since his first EP release in 2009. I (lizzie) got to witness the connection he shares with audiences on a recent month-long tour around the UK. Everywhere we went, audience members had stories of how important John's songs were to them, and guitar nerds flocked to have a look at his pedal board.Beyond his musicianship, John's music is imbued with an earnestness that invites listeners to look around and feel gratitude: for nature (especially the vistas of rural England), for the wisdom that memory can provide, and for the people close to us. John's latest album, ‘The Living Kind,' is a meditation on how delicate love and life can be, but also how enduring. It also showcases the creative partnership between Smith and his longtime friend and roots music industry icon Joe Henry. One of the album's highlights is “Milestones,” in which John reflects on how parenthood has changed his perspective on the artist's life.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? Dangit, we had fun tonight - a bunch of friends showed up and we talked about the amazing women voices in music... thanks to our visitors (South Oz, DJ, JLow, Coach and all the others) this turned out to be another award winning show!!!! We discussed bands/singers like Lisa Gerrard, Texas (again), 4non-blondes, a busker - Allie Sherlock, (Cranberries) Cyndi Lauper, Tina Turner, Saint Etienne, Til Tuesday, Diana Ross, Heart, Elena Siegman, Lianne La Havas, the Cranberries (original), Allie Sherlock (busker), Lana Del Rey (Emilie Hanie), Eric Krasno (not a female singer)... but who are we to deny our fans of tunes?), Six and the Sevens ( El Carpe brother band) as always, join us for a in depth geological dig through some sort of musical listener generated archive... and be part of our crew with a "pour me another brother"
Need some healing indie after a big week? Hang out with Anika Luna on the podcast this week as she serves up new Surf Trash that'll sort you out. Plus, prepare to be introduced to acts that'll have you shimmering like listening to Dua Lipa or melting like listening to Lianne La Havas.
Shabaka Hutchings grew up between the UK and Barbados. He started playing clarinet as a young boy in Barbados and eventually moved back to England to go to music school in the early 2000s. After college he began a period of working furiously on a kaleidoscopic range of projects and became an icon of the new sound of London jazz, which integrated African rhythms and modes, Caribbean and Middle eastern sounds and was largely danceable. Shabaka himself has never fully embraced the jazz label. While the music is highly improvised, and it owes much to the American jazz tradition, his influences are very broad. Over the course of the past decade, the majority of his touring and recorded work has been with three bands: Sons of Kemet, The Comet is Coming and Shabaka and the Ancestors. In these formations he displayed a fundamental approach to creative practice in different contexts spanning Afro-Caribbean fusion, London dance music club culture and the South African jazz tradition. Part of his signature on the saxophone has been inspired by rappers, and his sound is often evocative of the human voice, conversational, expressive, and rhythmic. A somewhat chance encounter with a flute maker in Japan several years ago led him to develop an interest in the Shakuhachi flute tradition, and during covid he committed himself to the flute. Last year he announced that he would be putting away his saxophone and ending all of his bands to dedicate himself almost exclusively to playing wooden flutes. His latest release Perceive its beauty, Acknowledge its Grace (Impulse!) is his first full length album since making that transition. It's more meditative, contemplative and introspective than his earlier work. But it's still clearly Shabaka. The album features appearances by pianist Jason Moran, drummer Nasheet Waits, harpists Brandee Younger and Charles Overton, vocalists Lianne La Havas, Moses Sumney and Saul Williams, string wizard Miguel Atwood Ferguson and percussionist Carlos Niño. I talked to Shabaka earlier this year at Winter Jazzfest as he was embarking on a new adventure, both personally and musically. It was an absolutely fascinating conversation about his own creative development and philosophy, his new record, and why this historical moment is “showing the importance of slowing down, of patience, of contemplation.” www.third-story.com www.leosidran.substack.com/ www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

Video version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03N5Bd9FunM Welcome back to another episode of the Rave Room Podcast. In this episode I sat down with 2 absolute legends. We spoke about how they enjoyed their Basscoast festival experience, their music and so much more. Ardalan Enamored first by traditional Iranian music and classic jazz and rock, Ardalan's taste began to transform with his childhood years spent moving back and forth from Iran and California. “Mr. Spock.” Call it beginner's luck, or more likely, a sign of what was to come–in2010, Ardalan shared one of his earliest studio explorations with Justin Martin, which became the foundation for the breakout hit. “Mr. Spock,” in its bizarre and booty-shaking glory, has been accredited as one of the “tracks that made Dirtybird famous,” helping to define the label's now darling reputation as a trusted source of ridiculous, off-the-wall dance floor bangers. Since, he continued to translate his deep-rooted connection to the dance floor in the studio with remixes on Toy Tonics, Play It Down, Yoshitoshi, and Dirtybird. T Williams West London's T.Williams is one of those people, having accomplished a full sweep of merited recognition over the years. Emerging onto the house scene in 2010, T.Williams instantly marked himself as a breakthrough artist with a difference; his unique take on house music turning heads. Far from a newcomer, his path as a musical artist started in the grime scene as Dread.D. Signed at the tender age of 17 with grime anthem Invasion on Jon E Cash's Black Ops label, Williams went on to have mass success in the grime and bass world selling thousands of singles worldwide. After a five-year reign, Williams found himself veering towards the world of house music. releasing solo works on his imprint Local Action and Pattern with remixes for Maya Jane Coles, Ben Westbeech and Skream. The end of 2011 saw Williams nominated for ‘Best Breakthrough DJ' by DJ Mag, ‘DJ Stars of 2012' by Time Out and featured in The Guardian. Two relationships came to the forefront in 2012 that propelled Williams to greater heights. The first was his weekly show on legendary London station, Rinse FM and the second, Williams' relationship with label PMR through his remix of Javeon McCarthy's ‘Lost Time'. The remix was named Record of the Week by BBC Radio 1 and supported by tastemakers Annie Mac and Fearne Cotton. From here T. signed to the label exclusively releasing his debut EP for the label in September 2012, and in the process receiving further support from BBC Radio 1. Further remixes of Mikky Ekko, Wretch 32 and Lianne La Havas followed suit, as well as his biggest to date - Disclosure's ‘Latch'. Powering dancefloors across the globe. Gaining his own monthly residency show with BBC Radio 1, 2013 ended with T. having played over 100 shows across four continents. 2017 marked the launch and release of the first collaborative EP with UK producer Julio Bashmore, via their joint independent Conch Records, a label aiming to push out more underground cross-genre music with heavy rotation from the likes of Moxie and Shy One. With an ever-expanding global tour schedule and further solo releases on the legendary NYC house label Strictly Rhythm turning heads, T.'s upward trajectory has never showed signs of slowing down. Using his technical prowess as a musician to educate the next generation of rising stars at London's respected Point Blank Music School has cemented his status as one of the UK music scene's key players. After fading from view in the UK after "Strange And Beautiful" (a top 10 hit in 2002), Aqualung was hardly consigned to the legend of the one hit wonder. Instead Matt Hales went to make his name and build his career in the USA - much of it through hard, steady touring - the opposite of his “instant success” in the UK. Aqualung bucked the trend for under-achieving British acts through the naughties, selling several hundred thousand albums and becoming darlings of the cool celebrity crowd, from appearances on Jay Leno's Tonight show to Grammy nominations and cool celebrities attending his shows. Matt Hales became what he calls “inadvertently cool”. How did that happen? By not compromising for one thing. “I tried compromising at one stage, by writing hits and giving the A&R guy what he wanted, but it made me unhappy. So I made the quietest music I could, my Idagio, my quieter version of Pet Sounds. That turned out to be successful anyway!”Hales also established a parallel music career by becoming a successful, sought after writer-producer: collaborating with Lianne La Havas (he produced her superb debut album), Bat for Lashes, Tom Chaplin, Mika, Paloma Faith, Disclosure and many others. This has set Matt free from the curse of every commercial musician out there i.e. not attached to having a hit. Still, despite being a collaborator for hire, Hales has released no less than seven albums as Aqualung. The most recent, Dead Letters, is something truly special. When I heard it I immediately invited Matt on the show to get the inside story on his rather unusual career journey. Hales is often compared with the great & the good, from Radiohead & Coldplay, to Elton John and Talk Talk. It makes sense when you listen to Dead Letters, an album in which he has let all of these influences come to the surface:“This is a record where I am paying homage to the record collection that I was raised on. There is Elton, Stevie Wonder, Bread, Toto - Pet Sounds of course, that's the muesli I was raised on”. And if you thought the key change is dead in pop music, then Matt Hales is out to prove you wrong on Dead Letters. As he mentions in our conversation, he can literally “do anything he wants”.Perhaps that's the very definition of musical longevity.Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/
Natasha Blaine is a Nashville-based singer and songwriter from Seattle, Washington. She blends roots in vocal jazz with soul, R&B, and pop music—citing great influence from artists like D'Angelo, Lianne La Havas, Amy Winehouse, and Emily King. Her songwriting, described as "direct, unfiltered and emotionally immediate,” buttery vocals, and energizing live shows have quickly caught the attention of the Nashville music scene. At six years old, Blaine started singing jazz. Her grandmother kept Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday records on repeat, teaching Blaine the words to old standards. And when she wouldn't stop singing them during kindergarten, her grandmother put her in voice lessons. Blaine picked up guitar at nine, sparking a love for songwriting before she even hit middle school. In 2018, while Blaine spent a few months studying literature in London, England, she made the decision to move from Seattle to Nashville, Tennessee. She wound up attending Vanderbilt University, getting a degree in literature and becoming the school's first vocal jazz student. In 2021, she became heavily involved in the famous Nashville writers' round circuit, writing songs and gigging at night.https://www.natashablaine.com/https://www.instagram.com/natashablaine/?hl=enhttps://www.facebook.com/natashablainemusic/Host - Trey Mitchelltreymitchellphotography IGfeeding_the_senses_unsensored on IGtrey mitchell: facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848For sponsorship Information or submitting for interviews - ftsunashville@gmail.comTheme Song - Damien HorneTake It From Me @damienhorne
