In GaHee Park's paintings, time and place are indeterminate, operating from a position of productive ambivalence. Figures are caught between creation and destruction, seduction and pragmatism, biology and desire. She often depicts intimate scenes where the idyll has turned sour and where art history's favorite still life subjects—rotund fruit, dissected fish, and lurid cocktails—are caught in a surrealist collapse of time and space. In this episode, she talks about Korean writer Han Kang. In The Love of Art podcast, artists are invited to speak about other artists that fascinate them (musicians, writers, filmmakers, actors, designers…) in a very personal way. The Love of Art (L'Amour de l'Art) is a podcast by Perrotin The episode with GaHee Park was recorded on March 27, 2025 at Perrotin Paris. Interview conducted by: Vanessa Clairet Stern Production and sound design: Seb Lascoux Language: English Graphic design: Perrotin Music: CDM MusicHébergé par Ausha.

The novel “We Do Not Part,” by the Nobel laureate Han Kang, involves a pet-sitting quest gone surreal: It follows a writer and documentarian whose hospitalized friend beseeches her to take care of her stranded pet parakeet on an island hundreds of miles away. When she arrives, the writer finds not only the bird but also an apparition of her friend, who has a devastating history to tell.Transforming real life into a haunting dreamscape, “We Do Not Part” is about grief, tragedy, the weight of the past, and the painful but essential work of remembering, delivered by one of the most electrifying writers working today. (Han's 2016 novel, “The Vegetarian,” won the International Booker Prize and was chosen as one of The New York Times's Best Books of the 21st Century.) On this week's episode, the Book Club host MJ Franklin discusses “We Do Not Part” with with fellow Book Review editors Lauren Christensen and Emily Eakin.  Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts and explore everything from politics to pop culture. When Han Kang accepted the Nobel Prize for Literature at the end of 2024, she spoke about the thread that connects her writing, from a poem she wrote at the age of 8, all the way through to her latest novel, We Do Not Part. We were delighted to be able to speak to her from South Korea about the questions that drive her writing, the themes of her latest novel and where that thread may take her and her readers next.

Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Kendra Winchester discuss Nobel Prize winner Han Kang's latest novel, a haunting story focused on the friendship of two women. Greta Jung performs the story of Kyungha, who receives an urgent request from her friend, Inseon, to come see her at a hospital in Seoul. Inseon asks Kyungha to care for her bird, Ama, at her home on Jeju Island, and Kyungha arrives just as a snowstorm consumes the island. Jung's wistful narration evokes the dreamlike prose and wintery atmosphere as Kyungha trudges through the snow, trying to reach Ama. As the plot unfolds, Jung's pacing is impeccable, and she maintains the mysterious tension of the story until its rapturous conclusion. Read our review of the audiobook at our website. In this interview with NPR's Scott Simon, Han Kang says the idea for her latest novel came to her in a snowy, haunting dream. The Nobel Prize-winning author's We Do Not Part is itself dreamlike. The novel follows narrator Kyungha as she tries to rescue a friend's beloved pet bird in the midst of a snowstorm that has hit South Korea's Jeju Island. As the story goes on, Kyungha is confronted with the taboo, hidden history of a 1948 massacre that took place on the island. In today's episode, Simon and Han discuss how censorship by the South Korean government contributed to the obfuscation of that violent history, as well as the author's interest in finding lightness in themes like animals and snow.To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

2024 irodalmi Nobel-díjasa a dél-koreai Han Kang lett. South Korean author Han Kang is this year's recipient of the Nobel Prize in literature, making her the first Korean writer to win the award. In its citation, the Swedish Academy commended Han "for her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life." Both of these themes are present in the author's 2007 novel, The Vegetarian, which tells the story of a young woman who decides to give up meat. In today's episode, we revisit a 2016 interview between Han and NPR's Linda Wertheimer, which took place around the time of The Vegetarian's publication in English.
