Jordan Kurland is a partner in Noise Pop Industries and the co-founder and partner of Brilliant Corners Artist Management. As a band manager, Jordan works with the likes of Death Cab For Cutie, The Postal Service, Toro y Moi, The New Pornographers, Perfume Genius, and Soccer Mommy. So he's played a huge role in ushering in some of the biggest indie rock acts of the day, but he's also an obsessive jazz fan and record collector. In this episode, Jordan selects five heady, funky, and esoteric jazz recordings that speak to his deep knowledge and the expansiveness of his collection. And along the way, we'll learn about the nuts and bolts of being a band manager to the stars, the educated guesswork of new artist development, and the joys and challenges of record collecting in the digital age. This month we struggle with very conscious bias when we discuss how much we love Perfume Genius' new album Glory. Welcome to Episode 57 of This is Not Happening (TINH), an Album of the Month (AOTM) Podcast. In Part 1 we deep dive into an Album that one of us has chosen and in Part 2 we play 'Spin it or Bin it'. We pick a theme and each pick a song that represents that theme. We judge the selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'?In Part 1, Joey is in the seat and basically bangs on about how much he loves Perfume Genius. In Part 2, we celebrate contemporary queer music and play Spin It or Bin It with the theme. Joey's track is unfairly and poorly treated ... as is David's but two other bangers make up for it. ----- Part 1 | Perfume Genius | 'Glory' -----I love Perfume Genius. Always have ... barring something horrific happening, I always will. I love him so much that I get nervous when a new album comes out. And this one is a belter. But is it for the fan-people or is there enough to attract and entertain newcomers?Listen to the album, listen to the pod, tell us what you think.Listen to the album ... HERE.Listen to the Soda Jerker podcast that we mention ... HERE.Watch the AMAZING Tiny Desk Performance ... HERE.Watch the No Front Teeth video we discuss ... HERE.Buy some stuff ... HERE. ----- Part 2 | Spin It or Bin It | 'Contemporary Queer' -----Music has always been massive to the Gay and Queer community and has always been an interesting area of crossover. Has it changed? What ever, we're here to celebrate.David chose 'Cinderella' by Model/Actriz.Joey chose 'The Giver' by Chappell Roan.Nolan chose 'Blind (Frankie Knuckles Remix' by Hercules and Love AffairGuy chose 'Tilted' by Christine and the Queens. Here is a link to our 16 track playlist of religion-inspired tracks - with the first 4 tracks being our picks for this month. We've been writing the blog for years come and have a look - https://thisisnothappening.net/

Mike Hadreas of Perfume Genius talks with Emily Fox about how his inner fears, struggles with mental health, paranoid fantasies and reflections on gay lust and love show up on his latest album, Glory. “I think I was just really afraid and I felt really tender and mortal and the world felt really fragile and scary and I couldn't figure out how to move through it very well,” Hadreas says speaking writing through depression. "And I didn't really know how to hold all of these things that I was feeling and move towards getting out of my head. I was just kind of stuck.” Photo by Cody CritcheloeSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mike Hadreas, better known as Perfume Genius, has been making music since 2010, when he released his debut album, “Learning.” Since then, he's become known for writing vulnerable songs that still feel incredibly powerful and danceable. While the cliché is that artists make their best work when they're struggling — or even under the influence of drugs or alcohol — that was not the case at all for Perfume Genius. He joins Tom Power to chat about his new album, “Glory,” which he says feels like a “culmination” of everything he's learned in the years since he got sober and started making music. If you enjoy this conversation, check out Tom's 2023 interview with singer-songwriter Sam Smith on their album, “Gloria.”

Our guest today is alternative songwriter and artist Perfume Genius, the musical project of Mike Hadreas. For 15 years, he's evolved from sparse acoustics to ‘80s pop, chamber pop, and alt-rock—earning Grammy and GLAAD nods and collaborating with Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Sharon Van Etten. Today, he releases his seventh album, Glory, a record that sees him expanding his sound once again, weaving in indie rock and Americana influences while maintaining his signature emotional depth. In today's episode, we speak with Mike about how Glory took shape and how its themes of mortality and the passage of time emerged naturally. We also discuss balancing those weighty subjects with moments of levity and how he brought his band into the creative process in a new way.Perfume Genius: Instagram / Spotify Purchase Glory and find the band on tour here.Visit our official website here and follow us across our socials.
Richtig gelesen. Auf Michelle Zauners viertem Album «For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women)» singt doch tatsächlich Schauspieler Jeff Bridges («The Big Lebowski») mit. A cracker from the forthcoming Perfume Genius album featuring Aldous Harding, the sassy pop of Sabrina Carpenter, and paying respect to two the best who passed this week.
