Not that anybody asked but this week we were nominated for an award and then nominated for another award, which doesn't really have a lot to do with the topic of the show but it's worth mentioning. This week we are joined by the spectacular Em from Verbal Diorama, who was also nominated for an award, and we're talking about films we think should be remade and animated. What will make our final, award nominated Top 3 list this week? once again, this episode has some visual to it so feel free to watch it on our YouTube channel but joined by our good friend @ronnie_trickshot we talk to @gijoe_for_fun about his amazing dioramas.
This week I'm delighted to be joined by Em, host of film history podcast Verbal Diorama, for a conversation on the (David Bowie-starring!!!) fantasy classic, 'Labyrinth'. And we have much to discuss...

Summary In this episode, we explore the art of model railroading, focusing on building key scenes off the layout and integrating them into the overall design. We discuss tips for purchasing train sets, especially for children, and emphasize the importance of taking your time and planning your scenes carefully. The conversation also touches on super detailing and the benefits of using diorama techniques to enhance your model railroad experience. Takeaways The holiday season is a great time to start model railroading. Building scenes off the layout allows for more detailed work. Using tacky glue can help avoid permanent mistakes. Start small and gradually expand your model railroad. Consider the age of children when buying train sets. Super detailing can enhance the visual appeal of your scenes. Plan your scenes carefully to avoid future complications. Diorama techniques can simplify the detailing process. Make sure to allocate time for your hobby. Integrate your scenes thoughtfully into the overall layout.

This week Alexis and Suzanne cover Season 5 Episode 18, "Live and Let Diorama." They share the frustrations of the listeners over Luke's lying to Lorelai about the Twickham house. Suzanne loves how Lane accepts Zack and his love for blue grass. Alexis appreciates the diorama and how it foreshadows the Stars Hollow musical in the revival. They both enjoy Rory hanging out with Paris and Lane, even though they just talk about boys the whole time. Want to listen to our episodes ad-free? Todd gives us a bunch of updates, gripes, and tips as Brett works to kickstart working again after a long vacation the past 10 days. In addition to Todd's updates on the French Cafe diorama, he also talks about a creative and innovative modeling technique that he used to turn an error or mis-casting on a diorama figure into a really awesome looking hat for the lady outside the cafe! This ties into what we talk about with getting creative and being true modelers! Brett is also currently working on editing up two new YouTube videos, so keep an eye out for them on our Wiley's Scale Modeling YouTube Channel!

This week's episode felt more like old times! We figured it would take a few episodes to get back into the swing of things, but damn this week was a ton of fun. Brett and Todd give us an update on the new "E" layout because it finally has all of the bench work completed and is ready to begin working UP from the base now. Then Brett gives us a quick update on the status of his new build, which he spent some time this past Monday night showing his work on during a Facebook/YouTube live session. After that, Todd discusses the finishing steps to his diorama of the French Cafe that he's wrapping up before he gets into his HO scale model building again. Then we jump into some listener questions and of course, Todd had a complaint and grievance that he aired out on the show (or two, or three). Since we mentioned RailroadKits & Microlumina, we figured we would give you guys a link to check out some of their awesome kits, details and lighting options for your model railroad layout! Check them out here: RailroadKtis & Microlumina. Don't forget, they also have the F&SM Metal Castings! (neither of these two links are affiliate links, just wanted to direct you to awesome things)

Battlefields have been known over time for various paranormal activities because of the many lives lost and River Raisin lives up to its claim of being one of the most haunted places in the state of Michigan. Several people have claimed to see apparitions of American soldiers dressed in 1813 military attire. EVPs or electronic voice phenomena has been recorded at the park. Guests at the park have photographed figures in doorways, windows and on the field. Some have even heard and recorded cries of agony, as well as the sounds of war. River Raisin National Battlefield Park The Battlefield was added to the National Park Service in October 2010 and officially opened May 2011. The park offers walking and biking trails, as well as the River Raisin Heritage Trail, to interest the casual visitor or War of 1812 history buff. A good place to begin your visit is the park's new Visitor and Education Center. The Visitor Center is OPEN and offers a Diorama of the River Raisin settlement, orientation maps, ranger programs, basic park orientation, gift shop and theater. In the brand new state of the art theater you can view the park's new film "The Untold Legacy of the River Raisin." There is NO Charge to view the film! Please note that although you can get your passport book stamped, our unigrid (park) brochures are being updated and will be in production for some time. Thank you for your understanding. Education Center Interactive Exhibits Exhibits pertaining to the Old Northwest Territory, Great Lakes History, Native-Americans, French settlement, Battles of the River Raisin and much more, are currently under development in the new education center museum which will open in 2023.
While he may technically practice as a photographer, artist, and architect, Hiroshi Sugimoto could also be considered, from a wider-lens perspective, a chronicler of time. With a body of work now spanning nearly five decades, Sugimoto began making pictures in earnest in 1976 with his ongoing “Diorama” series. In 1980, he started what may be his most widely recognized series, “Seascapes,” composed of Rothko-esque abstractions of the ocean that he has taken at roughly 250 locations around the world. In more recent years, Sugimoto has also built a flourishing architectural practice, designing everything from a café in Tokyo to the currently-under-construction Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. As with his subtly profound work, Sugimoto bears tremendous wisdom and is regarded by many as one of the most deeply perceptive minds and practitioners at the intersection of time and art-making.On the episode, he discusses his pictures as fossilizations of time; seascapes as the least spoiled places on Earth; and why, for him, the “target of completion” for a building is 5,000 years from now.Special thanks to our Season 9 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Hiroshi Sugimoto[5:10] Pre-Photography Time-Recording Devices[39:05] “Theaters”[15:06] “Seascapes”[32:31] “Diorama”[17:16] Caspar David Friedrich[25:14] Odawara[28:52] “Aujourd'hui le monde est mort [Lost Human Genetic Archive]”[44:19] “Abandoned Theaters”[44:19] “Opera Houses”[44:19] “Drive-In Theaters”[49:52] “Architecture”[51:12] Le Corbusier[51:12] Mies van der Rohe[55:30] New Material Research Laboratory[55:30] Tomoyuki Sakakida[59:23] Enoura Observatory[59:23] Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden[1:00:48] Katsura Imperial Villa[1:01:05] Bruno Taut[1:02:14] Donald Judd[1:02:14] “Hiroshi Sugimoto: Five Elements in Optical Glass”[1:06:47] Mingei[1:06:47] Isamu Noguchi[1:06:47] Dan Flavin[1:09:15] Sugimoto Bunraku Sonezaki Shinju: The Love Suicides at Sonezaki[1:09:15] At the Hawk's Well[1:09:15] W.B. In this BFE (beer-free episode), Barry, Abigail, and special guest Ian Rees (previously interviewed on Bonus: Friendship Induced Pod) discuss Ian's Virtual Jukebox submission, Diorama by Silverchair. Barry continually references Silverchair's debut album Frogstomp (not also known as Frogstamp). Abigail and Barry both compared the oeuvre of this album to that of Astoria by Marianas Trench, discussed on Cascadia (Marianas Trench and Cascade Brewing), and Electro-Shock Blues by Eels, discussed on Owlectro-Shock Brews [Eels and Dangerous Minds Brewing Co.). Silverchair worked with composer Van Dyke Parks on this album. In a twist we could not have predicted, we discovered some relevant information about Parks after recording that did not come up in our conversation. Per Wikipedia, Parks wrote “‘City of Lights,' ‘It's a “B” Movie,' ‘Cutting Edge,' and ‘Worthless,' all of which were used in the film The Brave Little Toaster, directed by Jerry Rees.[citation needed].” Well, we'll be the confirmatory citation - Jerry Rees is Ian's dad! However, during the episode, we did discuss Parks' work with The Beach Boys on their unfinished album Smile and his musically eclectic album Song Cycle. Did you catch Barry's weekly Coriolis force joke? Barry compared the guitar sound in Angie by The Rolling Stones to that in World Upon Your Shoulders. Abigail pointed out that had this not been a BFE, Green Bench would have been the perfect brewery to pair with Silverchair. We discussed the trend of including a hidden track after a long silence on a CD (in reference to “Outro,” the hidden track after After All These Years). We referenced I Have Seen the Rain (feat. James T. Moore) by P!nk, Her Majesty by The Beatles, and Mercy, Sweet Moan by The Black Crowes as comparative examples. Reddit has also discussed this issue at length. Wikipedia maintains a list of albums containing a hidden track. After minimal research, we believe the mysterious album Ian referenced with multiple silent tracks was Sleepify by Vulfpeck. We once again plugged Matty C's multimedia project What Am I Making. We closed by playing Ian's new single, Say Goodbye. Watch the trippy music video! Say Goodbye is available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon. Ian has an abundance of music available on Spotify and YouTube. We especially recommend Panic Induced Love (the album we reviewed on Bonus: Friendship Induced Pod), his Building A Song Series, and his Bo Burnham-inspired video “Why Do I Eat So Much Cheese?”. Up next… A Fever You Can't Sweat Out by Panic! At the Disco Ian also randomly selected our next Jukebox episode, Professional Rapper by Lil Dicky, submitted by Dinos Korominas. This episode is scheduled to drop on July 12, 2024. Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition. Barry and Abigail discuss Twilight Time by Bennie Wallace and sample Time Stands Still, Twinger, Mangoes At Work, and They Call Me Baltastic from Hiatus Brewing Company in Ocala, Florida. Barry has a personal connection to Bennie Wallace through his friend “Uncle” Steve Moore, whose Oscar-nominated animated short “Redux Riding Hood” features a score written by Bennie. Watch "Redux Riding Hood" or read Uncle Steve's blog post about its production! Many thanks to Lucas Frank, owner and brewer of Hiatus Brewing Company, for sitting down with us to talk about the history and the branding of the brewery! Barry shared his other Los Angeles jazz experiences at Chadney's, across the street from the NBC Studios. One memorable performance was by trombone player Matt Finders, who was part of Tonight Show with Jay Leno Band led by Kevin Eubanks. Check out Barry's playlist of the songs that were covered by Bennie Wallace on this album! Abigail could not help but hear Silver Bells in The Tennessee Waltz. Abigail and Barry compared Willie Mae to Linus and Lucy by Vince Guaraldi Trio, from the soundtrack to “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Up next… Diorama by Silverchair, submitted to our Virtual Jukebox by Ian Rees Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Chris Johnston (Easy Riders Raging Podcast) and Em (Verbal Diorama: A Film History Podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Chris' choice Parasite. Parasite (2019) is a South Korean black comedy thriller directed by Bong (Snowpiercer)Joon-ho. It tells the story of the working class Kim family who infiltrate the wealthy Park household. This week on the Toy Power Podcast, its another full on News session; as we kick it off with a chat about the new Star Wars Asoka Show - what are we missing? Then it genuinely seems that Todd McFarlane himself has filled our Runsheet with his upcoming reveals and announcements! But can you believe that we are discussing more characters, from the DC Universe, than just Batman himself! Yes, its a pretty cool mix... with some Batman too of course. Then we move over to some really neat news from Ramen Toys. Ace, announces a new Diorama set in the works plus a bomb shell statement on who has the rights for a certain 80's property.... Then in rounding out the episode, we circle back to a Question initially put forward by Master Fresh; of which - What is the great toy lie you are telling yourself this year? Whilst we attempt to recall our initial answers to that question from 6months ago; we mostly seem to have all but broken the rules; except for Frank. Well done sir! All this and more! Enjoy!Support the show: http://patreon.com/toypowerpodcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Uh-oh. We do not want to say it, but we didn't love this episode. We are trying to figure out exactly why. It has great scenes and hilarious moments, of course. But, something was "off". That being said, in the last few minutes when Dean and Luke talk and Rory breaks down...it felt like the Gilmore Girls we know and love. Don't hate us for saying it, help us understand.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
