"You ever been beaten down by life after 30 years? ... That's the genesis of Slow Joy. It's just emotionally driven lyrics and things that make sense really loud."In this episode, we sit down with Esteban from Slow Joy at the Bottom Lounge in Chicago to discuss the reality of tour life and the release of his deluxe record, A Joy Even Slower. Bridging the gap between the Myspace era and today's alternative waves, Esteban breaks down how growing up in the Dallas music scene influenced his unique sound—a mix of "hot and sludgy" shoegaze and anthem-heavy emo.We explore his deep love for Taking Back Sunday (specifically the Louder Now era) and the cinematic history of the "The Ghost of You" music video. Esteban also opens up about his vocal evolution, moving from trying to emulate Midwest emo tappies to channeling the raw power of Joe Talbot from Idles and Citizen. Whether you are a nostalgic millennial or an emo revivalist, this conversation connects the history of the genre to its exciting future. Key Topics & Timestamps:Introduction: The reality of tour life and the "Venn Diagram" of sleep vs. foodThe Emo Check: Why Taking Back Sunday's "Makedamnsure" is the perfect songFun Fact: How the director of "The Ghost of You" went on to direct Spider-ManDefining the Slow Joy sound: "Life beating you down"Deep dive into the deluxe album A Joy Even Slower and Modest Mouse influencesTouring with The Academy Is... and the kindness of 2000s legendsThe Texas Scene Report: Dallas, Denton, and the "sludgy" shoegaze soundVocal techniques: Channeling Idles and Citizen vs. Midwest Emo math rockWhere to find Slow Joy online Guest/Band Links:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/SlowJoyInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/slowjoy.officialOfficial Website: https://www.slowjoymusic.com/ Episode Highlights:"I'm not cool enough to do the shoegaze thing. Everybody is like, 'Oh, that's like Citizen.' And I was like, 'No, I'm actually just trying to do Joe [from Idles].'""You can do two things half-a**ed... or I'm gonna do one thing at a time. Programleder: Sivert MoeSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/anger. Micko Westmoreland in conversation with David Eastaugh https://landlinerecords.com https://www.facebook.com/MickoMellotronic/ The Mellotronics formed in 2017 with the intention of turning Micko Westmoreland's songwriting skills into a dynamic live prospect. Expanding from their initial three piece to the current four strong line up, the band sees Micko's rabble rousing vocals and spiky, agitational guitar work augmented perfectly by the crack squad of drummer Nick Mackay of hotly tipped rock duo Barricades, Owls of Now's Vicky Carroll providing immovable bassline solidity and the intricate, effects-soaked fretwork of Jon Klein (Siouxsie & The Banshees, Specimen). Since then they've been busy cutting their teeth with a series of shows around the capital and beyond, making return visits to the 100 Club in Oxford Street and earning multiple requests for support slots from acts as established as Evan Dando (Lemonheads), David Devant & His Spirit Wife, Blue Orchids, Sheep on Drugs, The Television Personalities and The Monochrome Set. Bringing a new dimension of sharp and economic post-punk/new wave attitude to the diverse Westmoreland songbook, they've been already been favourably compared to The Jam, Pil and Wire as well as the mean, lean but undeniably powerful sound of young bucks like Idles or Shame.
Playlist:Bright Eyes - First Day of My LifeVillagers - Everything I Am Is YoursBon Iver - For EmmaAmerican Football - The Summer EndsArlo Parks - CarolineClairo - Sexy to SomeoneCharli xcx, The Japanese House - AppleChappell Roan - Naked In ManhattanKwengface, Joy Orbison, Overmono - Freedom 2The Streets - Has It Come to This?KNEECAP, Grian Chatten - Better Way To LivePJ Harvey - Good FortuneSt. Vincent - Broken ManKim Gordon - Murdered OutFuture Islands - For SureDesire - Bizarre Love TriangleBjörk - Declare IndependenceHayley Williams - ParachuteMolly Nilsson - Palestine (Somewhere over the Rainbow) Joanne Robertson, Oliver Coates - GownGalerna - Nessun Dormajoseluis - Fortunaairu - El Sol (CORTE! rework)smerz - FeistyThe Cure - Alone (Four Tet Remix)Nation of Language - In Your HeadArt School Girlfriend - L.Y.A.T.TRobyn - Dancing On My OwnJamie xx, Robyn - LifeOasis - Morning Glory (Unplugged)Florence + The Machine - One Of The GreatsPortugal. It's bonus time again, as we bring you not one but two episodes relating to the music of Darren Aronofsky's riotous and darkly comic thriller, Caught Stealing. We'll drop the episode featuring composer Rob Simonsen shortly, but first it's the turn of Joe from IDLES, who collaborated with Rob and the score and also provided original songs for the film. Appropriately, Joe joined us walking through the streets of Brooklyn!
It's part two of our Caught Stealing sonic special, as composer Rob Simonsen joins us to discuss his contribution to Darren Aronofsky's latest movie, and plenty more besides. Edith's chat with Joe from IDLES is also available, as indeed is the episode with Darren, so do check those out if you haven't already. But it was great to get Rob on his own so we could dive deep into his own process, as well as some of his other career highlights.

The musical landscape of September 2024 unfolds like a treasure map of sonic discoveries as Matt Sidhom and guest co-host Jen Tully navigate through twelve diverse new releases that defy easy categorization. They kick things off with the track, "Everybody Scream," from Florence and the Machine's upcoming sixth album, which creates a space where women don't have to "be quiet" or "be kind" – a witchy celebration of unrestrained feminine power. Meanwhile, Role Model's infectious "Sally When the Wine Runs Out" has transformed into a cultural moment, with celebrities from Natalie Portman to Al Roker taking turns as the song's namesake during live performances. The conversation shifts to gritty territory with Idles' "Rabbit Run," where Joe Talbot's distinctive Cockney delivery powers the soundtrack to Austin Butler's new film. This leads into Old Dominion's surprisingly affecting "Miss You Man," a country ballad that captures male friendship and grief with remarkable authenticity. Wet Leg reveals unexpected vulnerability with "Pokemon," a softer departure from their typically harder-edged sound, while Doja Cat delivers another potential hit with "Jealous Type" . The musical journey continues through jam band territory with Goose's soulful "Madelena," the country-rap fusion of BigXThaPlug and Shaboozey's "Home," and the truly unexpected "Clockwork" by Laufey, which sounds like a Disney princess number addressing thoroughly modern themes. The episode closes with universal praise for Dominic Fike's "Sandman," a perfect blend of hip-hop, rap, and old-school R&B influences that showcases why he remains one of music's most exciting voices. Our latest guest on Soundtracking is Darren Aronofsky, who returns to the podcast to discuss his comedy crime thriller, Caught Stealing. Starring Austin Butler, Regina King, Matt Smith, Zoe Kravitz and Liev Schreiber among others, it tells the story of New York bartender Hank Thompson, who finds himself in all manner of trouble with a motley crue of gangsters and lowlives when he agrees to look after his neighbours cat. The score was written by Rob Simonson and performed hy IDLES, who also wrote some original pieces for the film themselves. Darren goes into great detail about their collaboration.

Anthony Cumia was once one of radio's most prolific shock-jocks, best known for co-hosting "Opie and Anthony" from 1995 to 2014. In recent years, however, you're more likely to find Cumia mulling around the white nationalist movement. This episode examines Cumia's life and career, exploring the significant impacts he had on comedy, entertainment, and politics during his professional peak. The program also chronicles the collapse of his media stardom, controversies that continue to plague him, and his relationships within far-right extremist movements.Mike and Jared were joined by Matt [Redacted], whose last name was withheld to shield him and his otherwise normal life from potential blowback from Cumia and his cult following of super fans. Matt is launching a new podcast soon, called "The Virus." Check that out!~~~Support us on Patreon: patreon.com/PostingThroughIt~~~Transition Music: "I'm Scum" by IDLES

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by JOE TALBOT of IDLES for an encore episode! An in person episode for this follow up appearance, as the first time round was a Zoom-er in the heat of the lockdown times. So much has changed, for the band, for Joe himself, and the world on the whole. The last 5 years or so has been a cyclone of all sorts, and living through it while keeping a cool and level head is an insurmountable goal. Thankfully creation and art and music are not in short supply, no matter what some of the highers might want us to think, and Joe is proof of that. A wide ranging chat but with an anchor of sorts, which addresses many heavy hitting subjects including class, poverty, politics, socials, reading, mental health, touring, being in a band in general and of course, tinned fish. The amount of times I find myself typing that, good god. For today's episode, I am joined by C.A. Francis, the leader of Brighton post punk shredders DITZ. They tell me all about the recording process for their new album 'Never Exhale,' which they recorded while on the road with IDLES, and why it's important to them to write about politics from a detailed personal angle. ✨ MORE ABOUT DITZ ✨ DITZ, a band that hasn't stopped for a breath since forming in 2015, is a post punk outfit from Brighton who formed in 2015 after seeing a METZ and Lightning Bolt gig at Concorde 2. Shortly after completing their first headlining tour in 2020, the band recorded and released their debut album 'The Great Regression,' in the aftermath of the pandemic. This week Ari sits down with Zena White, the chief operating officer at Partisan Records. Partisan is an internationally renowned independent record label headquartered in Brooklyn, NY. Zena has overseen global strategy for #1 charting, Grammy-nominated, Mercury Prize-winning album campaigns across Partisan's diverse roster that includes IDLES, PJ Harvey, Cigarettes After Sex, Blondshell, the Fela Kuti estate and many more. Zena is also on the board of organizations like World Independent Network, A2IM, RIAA, and is a Recording Academy Member. Then later, she takes us behind the scenes of Partisan Records, explaining where they spend their marketing money, how much they spend, and more. Ari and Zena discuss ‘old-school' marketing tactics like radio, PR, print media, digital and TV, and Zena sheds light on how artists get on Late Night shows… along with how much that costs. Yep—it costs. Ari and Zena also dive deep into the world of ‘new media' and discuss how Partisan spends its money in the new age of social media.
