Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by JOE TALBOT of IDLES for an encore episode! An in person episode for this follow up appearance, as the first time round was a Zoom-er in the heat of the lockdown times. So much has changed, for the band, for Joe himself, and the world on the whole. The last 5 years or so has been a cyclone of all sorts, and living through it while keeping a cool and level head is an insurmountable goal. Thankfully creation and art and music are not in short supply, no matter what some of the highers might want us to think, and Joe is proof of that. A wide ranging chat but with an anchor of sorts, which addresses many heavy hitting subjects including class, poverty, politics, socials, reading, mental health, touring, being in a band in general and of course, tinned fish. The amount of times I find myself typing that, good god. Dublin four-piece SPRINTS lives up to their band name with their frenetic, garage-punk sound. The fast-paced energy of their music is equally matched by frontwoman Karla Chubb's intense lyricism. The band's debut full length Letter To Self “transforms pain into truth, passion into purpose and perseverance into strength.” Chubb tackles issues like bodily autonomy, mental health and social injustice. The quartet channels this “negative energy” into a cathartic 40 minutes with moments of thrashing anger and melodic meltdowns. Similar to contemporary post-punk counterparts IDLES, SPRINTS aims to bring about change in the world, or at the very least, within ourselves. Chubb explains, “No matter what you're born into, or have experienced, there's a way to emerge from this and be happy within yourself.”Watch SPRINTS perform “Adore Adore Adore,” “Feast” and “Up and Comer” live at WNXP's Sonic Cathedral here.

They tell me all about the recording process for their new album 'Never Exhale,' which they recorded while on the road with IDLES, and why it's important to them to write about politics from a detailed personal angle. ✨ MORE ABOUT DITZ ✨ DITZ, a band that hasn't stopped for a breath since forming in 2015, is a post punk outfit from Brighton who formed in 2015 after seeing a METZ and Lightning Bolt gig at Concorde 2. Shortly after completing their first headlining tour in 2020, the band recorded and released their debut album 'The Great Regression,' in the aftermath of the pandemic. IDLES 2021 Rig Rundown: https://youtu.be/ZyofmA3bJk4Subscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeBetween 2016 and 2024, Bristol outfit IDLES have gone from being snarling, post-punk underdogs to being snarling, post-punk champions. Their debut LP, Brutalism, was an immediate hit, and since then they've turned out a string of full-length records that have expanded their creative vocabulary while increasing their popularity. It's all come to a head this year with Tangk, their Grammy-nominated fifth album, which dropped in February.Along the way, IDLES' sound has mutated into experimental offshoots and outgrowths, so it's little surprise that the rigs of guitarists Mark Bowen and Lee Kiernan, along with bassist Adam Devonshire, have done the same. While they still tour with some of the gear they showed off on our 2021 Rig Rundown, each player has fun new trinkets that contribute to their run of shows this year. But even with all the new toys, they keep an element of danger in the mix, and certain variables mean the set sounds different every night: “People come to see an IDLES show 'cause it almost falls apart all the time,” grins Bowen.IDLES 2021 Rig Rundown: https://youtu.be/ZyofmA3bJk4Subscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPG Don't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar0:00 - Electronic Audio Experiments & D'Addario0:15 - IDLES Live0:39 - Chris Kies Intro0:59 - Mark Bowen's Baritone Stratocasters5:37 - Mark Bowen's "Stinky" 1972 Strat7:43 - Mark Bowen's Amps & Cabinets10:14 - Mark Bowen's Fender Mustang with Fishman TriplePlay12:57 - Mark Bowen's "Crawler" Pedal & Synth Rig16:17 - Recreating Tangk Album Live Onstage20:10 - Mark Bowen's Sonic Curiousity22:19 - Does Joe Talbot Get Tired of Gear Experimentation?23:17 - Working with Nigel Godrich on Tangk25:14 - Lee Kiernan Intro25:45 - Lee Kiernan's Fender 70th Anniversary Esquire27:54 - Lee Kiernan's Fender Mustang29:55 - Lee Kiernan's Jackson Soloist SL132:12 - Lee Kiernan's Amps33:20 - Lee Kiernan's Marshall 1987X Plexi35:34 - Lee Kiernan's Hiwatt Custom DR8836:35 - Lee Kiernan's 1970s Peavey Deuce40:00 - Rig Rundown & D'Addario40:23 - Lee Kiernan's Pedalboard40:55 - Lee Kiernan's Pedals for "Jungle"45:57 - Lee Kiernan's Pedals for "Dancer"50:41 - Lee Kiernan's New Earthquaker Devices Gary Pedal55:39 - Lee Kiernan's Baritone Esquire56:36 - Lee Kiernan's Pedals for "Roy"01:03:00 - Adam Devonshire Intro01:03:44 - Adam Devonshire's Fender American Ultra Jazz Bass01:04:38 - Adam Devonshire on IDLES Gear Evolution01:06:15 - Adam Devonshire on Holding Down Rhythm with Jon Beavis01:07:07 - Adam Devonshire on Bass Influences01:08:19 - Adam Devonshire Custom Neck for Jazz Bass01:09:30 - Adam Devonshire on Recreating Tangk Onstage01:11:25 - Adam Devonshire's 1970s Fender Precision Bass01:14:25 - Adam Devonshire's Serek Lincoln Bass01:16:04 - Adam Devonshire's Fender & Hiwatt Amps01:17:08 - Adam Devonshire's Pedalboard01:24:55 - D'Addario Strings[Brought to you by D'Addario: https://ddar.io/wykyk-rr]© Copyright Gearhead Communications LLC, 2024#guitar #rigrundown #idles #guitarist #guitarplayer #guitargear #bass #bassguitar

This week Ari sits down with Zena White, the chief operating officer at Partisan Records. Partisan is an internationally renowned independent record label headquartered in Brooklyn, NY. Zena has overseen global strategy for #1 charting, Grammy-nominated, Mercury Prize-winning album campaigns across Partisan's diverse roster that includes IDLES, PJ Harvey, Cigarettes After Sex, Blondshell, the Fela Kuti estate and many more. Zena is also on the board of organizations like World Independent Network, A2IM, RIAA, and is a Recording Academy Member. Prior to Partisan, Zena was Managing Director at The Other Hand marketing services company in London, where she worked with artists such as Run The Jewels, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley, and more.Zena tells Ari about ORCA (Organization for Recorded Culture and Arts) a nonprofit she's involved with that uses research to demonstrate the economic, social, and cultural value of music. Then later, she takes us behind the scenes of Partisan Records, explaining where they spend their marketing money, how much they spend, and more. Ari and Zena discuss ‘old-school' marketing tactics like radio, PR, print media, digital and TV, and Zena sheds light on how artists get on Late Night shows… along with how much that costs. Yep—it costs. Ari and Zena also dive deep into the world of ‘new media' and discuss how Partisan spends its money in the new age of social media. Armed with their never dusty, always furious chops, The Jesus Lizard will support Rack with both national and international touring throughout 2024 and 25.  Duane share's his early relationship with music, why he decided to pick up a guitar and his path from classical training, to heavy, angular rock and jazz. He tells us why The Jesus Lizard are able to retain their energy and intensity over their long career and why quality control is so important to the band.  We also learn how refinement and brutal honesty play a role in the evolution of his guitar playing.  Joe and Duane discuss the celebration of “heavy music” in the UK with bands like IDLES, and we hear a couple new Jesus Lizard tunes. Today the band also unveiled their new music video for “Six Feet Deep,” which made its global broadcast premiere on MTV Live, MTVU, MTV Biggest Pop and across MTV's global network of channels, as well as on the Paramount Times Square billboards. About the record, the band commented, “This new album is the result of our rawest emotions and most meaningful connections with people we've gotten to know and work with these past few years. We're incredibly proud of this music and we can't wait for you to make it yours. From our hearts to you, this is Keep Me Fed.”Keep Me Fed finds the group at the peak of their powers. Over the course of thirteen tracks, the album balances stadium-size hooks with airtight riffing and thunderous rhythms. In talking about the story behind the decision to name the album Keep Me Fed, “throughout the whole process, the work was consuming us,” says Pau. “By impacting everything we did, the album kept us fed both creatively and personally. We're inviting other people to participate and consume it too.”Pre-release singles featured “MORE” (performed at the 2023 MTV VMAs [Watch HERE]), “S!CK” which climbed to Top 8 at Active Rock and #8 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Chart, music videos for “Burnout” & Spanish track “Qué Más Quieres” premered with MTV, as well as “Hell You Call A Dream” and “Automatic Sun” which are already fan favorites to hear live.  Revolver applauded, “Like the Mexican sister-trio's previous output, it's undeniably infectious,” and Classic Rock hailed it as a “shot-in-the-arm of propulsive, fire-spitting hard rock.” Rolling Stone pegged it as one of “All The Songs You Need To Know This Week.” The trio will embark on the ‘Keep Me Fed' US headline tour this September & October, making stops in New York, Los Angeles, Nashville, and more, before joining Evanescence and Halestorm on tour in Canada. Check out the full confirmed itinerary below. Fans can purchase tickets here: https://thewarningband.comThus far in 2024, The Warning performed at ShipRocked in the Caribbean, Mexico's prestigious Pa'l Norte & Vive Latino Festivals, sold-out their April EU/UK headline tour, just wrapped their first headlining tour of Japan that included a show with Band-Maid, and will return overseas to EU/UK for summer festivals. Looking ahead to 2025, the band sold-out the 10k capacity Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City in less than 48 hours. The Warning are as hungry as ever on Keep Me Fed, and they're about to sink their teeth into 2024. Catch them on tour in the US this fall.ABOUT THE WARNING:The Warning draw strength and power from a lifetime of sisterhood and music. The Mexico-born sister trio—Daniela “Dany” [guitar, lead vocals, piano], Paulina “Pau” [drums, vocals, piano], and Alejandra “Ale” Villarreal [bass, piano, backing vocals]—have logged thousands of miles on the road, generated hundreds of millions of streams, and left countless fans in awe. All of this tireless work and dedication has shaped and sharpened their sound with knifepoint precision, arming alternative anthems with universally catchy hooks and an uncompromising hard rock kick. The girls have devoted themselves to a shared dream since their childhood in Monterrey, Mexico. They initially made waves with a string of independent releases, paving the way for their acclaimed 2022 full-length offering ERROR. Between performing alongside Muse, Foo Fighters, Guns N' Roses, Royal Blood, The Pretty Reckless, Three Days Grace and Imagine Dragons, the band ignited MTV's Extended Play Stage at the 2023 MTV VMAs. Representative of their cultural impact, Pepsi even notably chose them as the face of Pepsi Black in Mexico. Moreover, they emerged as the rare force who could comfortably appear in features by Vanity Fair, People, Cosmopolitan, and Glamour as well as on Metallica's star-studded Blacklist compilation—placing their cover of “Enter Sandman” [with Alessia Cara] shoulder-to-shoulder with contributions from Ghost, St. Vincent, Chris Stapleton, IDLES and Weezer. The Warning embrace their destiny on their 2024 full-length album, Keep Me Fed [LAVA/Republic Records] out now. The album was introduced by singles  “MORE,” “S!CK” “Hell You Call A Dream”, “Qué Más Quieres”,  “Automatic Sun”, and “Burnout”.We want to hear from you! Inspired by early punk and new wave, Adam Greenspan's journey through the vast soundscapes of the late 80s, to industrial and alt 90s, marked a lifelong immersion in music. With over 25 years in the industry, his career ignited with the engineering of Faith No More's "Album of the Year." Later, a serendipitous connection with fellow producer Nick Launay led to fruitful collaborations, shaping albums for luminaries such as Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Supergrass, The Cribs, and Refused. Greenspan's recent productions have garnered critical acclaim, notably securing a 2019 Mercury Prize shortlist for IDLES' "Joy as an Act of Resistance" and a 2020 Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album with Thomas Dybdal's "All These Things." His return to IDLES resulted in a UK #1 album with "Ultra Mono," highlighting his enduring impact on contemporary music. Continuing to shape sonic landscapes, Greenspan's recent projects include works with Bloc Party and Flogging Molly. His approach is characterized by close collaboration with artists, aiming to distill a sound and style uniquely theirs while encouraging them to explore new territories. Emphasizing the visceral impact of music and its ability to evoke emotion and movement, Greenspan rejects formulas in favor of capturing genuine artistic expression. John is joined by IDLES' Bowen, along with producer Kenny Beats, and producer and engineer Mikko Gordon, to talk about how they wrote, recorded and produced the album ‘TANGK'. Idles are a British post-punk band who gained recognition with their 2017 debut album ‘Brutalism'. Known for their gritty, powerful sound and explosive live shows, their five albums to date have earned them nominations for the Mercury Prize, BRIT & Grammy Awards. Their latest record, ‘TANGK', sees the band team up with producers Nigel Godrich and Kenny Beats, and digs into topics of love and gratitude, all while maintaining their signature Idles energy. Linking up between Kenny's LA studio and Mikko's London studio, the trio discuss how they utilised the different strands of experience and expertise from all involved. As well as dubious covers and Christmas day demos, they share stories of writing team breakouts and the unexpected moments that came when they drew inspiration beyond their usual domains.  Tracks discussed: Roy, A Gospel, POP POP POP TAPE IT Thanks to our friends at Tape It for supporting the podcast. We give you a bit of the old and a bit of the new this week! We do an old fashion intro with just the boyz. Then, Burnside is off to see Idles and we get some classic new school TIR where the guest had to bail out hours before the episode and we got a new guest. The old guest recommended the new guest and we're totally not mad at the first guest. Plus, Kyle's chat with the second guest has some good stuff. The real Indie Labels episode will be fun. Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

Since releasing their critically acclaimed debut album, Brutalism, in 2017, the British band IDLES have dropped four other albums in quick succession. The band's bombastic sound brilliantly balances joy, chaos, and an often critical take on the powers that be. IDLES latest album, TANGK, was produced by the band's guitarist Mark Bowen, Kenny Beats, and Radiohead producer, Nigel Godrich. On today's episode Justin Richmond talks to Joe Talbot and Mark Bowen from the greenroom of the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon about their tumultuous creative partnership. They also explain how Mark helps temper Joe's sometimes passionate rage, and Joe breaks down why he will forever despise England's monarchy. You can hear a playlist of some of our favorite IDLES songs HERE.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
