Have you ever been reduced to a label someone else gave you?Today I want to introduce you to Michael, Michael and I met back in December by the pool in Tahiti, I was ending a trip and he was just beginning what would be a 6 month adventure he had planned a couple years for. We chatted briefly and stayed in touch, I got to see his adventures and as he made his way back to New York we met up again and had a chatHe shared how his experience traveling changed him, for the time traveling with someone and the time traveling alone, how laughter and contentment aren't always the same but how he witnessed and took part in them as he went from place to placeHe shared in one of the most honest and sincere ways the difference between how he feels about joy and yet what he wants more of in his life, how relationships and people are at the core of what it all comes back to, and how taking positive feedback is a thing we can learn to be ok withWe chat about one of the scariest moments on his trip as he fell sick in the worlds largest cave and how day three in the cave and making his way out became such a valuable lesson, I think for all of us in tough times Michael is one of those people that you meet and you feel as though when he asks how your day is, he means it, like when he smiles at you it is genuine, and like when you get to spend time with him he values you. Susanna Annesley was born on January 20, 1669 and was the youngest of her 25 siblings! Her father was the Rev. Dr. Samuel Annesley and was later referred to as the St. Paul of the Nonconformists who stood against the unbiblical practices of slumbering national church.[1] To give you some sense of the kind of Christian home Susanna was born into, the Annesley home was visited by some of the spiritual giants of their day, such as Richard Baxter, John Owen, and Thomas Manton. Susanna said of her childhood: I will tell you what rule I observed when I was young and too much addicted to childish diversions, which was this never to spend more time in mere recreation in one day than I spent in private religious devotions.[2] It has been said of Susanna that her knowledge of the Bible was superior to that of many of the pastors of her day and her love for and devotion to God was reflected in her time in the Bible and prayer. On November 12, 1688, Susanna married Samuel Wesley who had become an Anglican priest. Together the Wesleys had at least 17 children (some believe they had 19 children), and of those children, only 10 survived infancy; one child was crippled, and another did not learn to speak until he was six years old. If 10 mouths to feed and children to clothe was not enough for both parents, Samuel Wesley was a poor steward and manager of money, not a very good husband to Susanna, and was frequently away from home for long periods. I read that during her lifetime as both a mother and a wife, Susanna was sick often, there was little money for food, and debt plagued their family and household because of Samuels poor management of money. Samuel was once thrown into debtors prison because their debt was so high. Twice the homes they lived in throughout their marriage were destroyed by fire along with much of what they owned. Someone slit their cows udders so they wouldnt have milk, killed their dog, and burned their flax field.[3] Susanna had little time between her duties as a mother, the need to work their gardens, milk their cows, educate their children, and manage their home, all with little help. However, she managed to spend about two hours a day praying because she believed in the God of Ephesians 3:20-21. Because it was nearly impossible to find a quiet place to pray, she used her apron and told her children that when they saw her head covered with her apron, they were not permitted to disturb her because she was praying. Of Samuel and Susannas ten surviving children, God would use John and Charles profoundly to reach the lost and impact the world they lived inmostly due to the foundation of the Word of God laid by their mother and the prayers prayed on their behalf. John Wesley would grow to become a great evangelist whom God used to preach to nearly one million people in his lifetime. Charles would be used by God to write over 9,000 hymns, of which many are still sung in our churches today.[4] One of those hymns is a favorite of mine: And Can It Be, That I Should Gain. Consider three of its five verses: And can it be that I should gainAn interest in the Savior's bloodDied He for me, who caused His painFor me, who Him to death pursued?Amazing love! How can it beThat Thou, my God, should die for me? He left His Father's throne aboveSo free, so infinite His graceEmptied Himself of all but loveAnd bled for Adam's helpless raceTic mercy all, immense and freeFor O my God, it found out me!Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, should die for me? No condemnation now I dreadJesus, and all in Him, is mineAlive in Him, my living HeadAnd clothed in righteousness divineBold I approach the eternal throneAnd claim the crown, through Christ my ownAmazing love! How can it beThat Thou my God, should die for me? Now, like a well-aged, perfectly seasoned steak cooked by a master chef, Ephesians 3:20-21 is before us, and every bit of these two verses is meant to be savored. So, lets savor one of the great doxological statements in the Bible: Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. This statement in Ephesians 3:20-21 is in response to what God has done, is doing, and will continue to do in the life of the one He has chosen, redeemed, and secured as His child. Paul has brought us to the threshold of where our understanding and imagination can go, that we who were once dead in our offences and sins (2:1), can know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that we may be filled to all the fullness of God (3:19). In his sermon on this same passage, James Montgomery Boice wrote in response: This is beyond comprehension; we cannot even begin to imagine how we can be filled with Gods own fullness. We stand on the edge of the infinite. And yet, Paul is still not satisfied. He has prayed that God will do something we cannot even imagine; and now, having exhausted his ability to speak and write along that line, he bursts out in praise to God who, he says, is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us (v. 20).[5] So, what are these verses teaching us? What hope do they provide you? I believe that the answer is profound yet simple. God is Working All Things Out for Our Good How is God working all things out for our good and how do we know He is working all things out for our good? Well, let me begin by answering how we know that He is working all things out for our good. For starters, our God can work all things out for our good! Paul begins verse 20 with six simple words: Now to Him who is able. God is able because He is not an idol. The Greek word used for do is poieō, which means to do, make, cause, or appoint. In other words, God is not like the stuff or gods that people worship; He can do what they cannot! He is not made with hands or created through any persons imagination. He is God! The God who is able is He who declares of Himself: Remember the former things long past, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things which have not been done, saying, My plan will be established, and I will accomplish all My good pleasure; calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of My purpose from a distant country. Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass. I have planned it, I will certainly do it. Listen to Me, you stubborn-minded, who are far from righteousness. I bring near My righteousness, it is not far off; and My salvation will not delay. And I will grant salvation in Zion, and My glory for Israel. (Isaiah 46:913) God alone is able to choose, redeem, and keep any He wills for the purpose of lavishing His rich mercy, great love, and all-sufficient grace upon any that He grants salvation. God chooses, redeems, and keeps because He will accomplish all His good pleasure (Isa. 46:10b). Because God is able, He can do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think. God is not like the compromising parent in the grocery store that will offer or give whatever the child wants just so he/she can get the child to shut up. God gives His children what is good for them and what they need. Sometimes what we want lines up with what He knows that we need, but there are times that what we are convinced we need is not what we need at all because it ultimately may not even be good for us. However, if we are surrendering ourselves to Gods will (vv. 14-15), if we are desiring a dependance upon the Holy Spirit (vv. 16-17a), and we are walking in union with Christ (vv. 17-19), then what you think you need will begin to line up with what God knows you need. That is not all though, for the thing you do not know you need to ask for, God knows, and He is, able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think Listen, when your thinking begins to line up with the heart of what God wants for you, you will find yourself asking for the very thing God desires for you. This is what Jesus said would happen if you abide (remain) in Him: If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you (John 15:7). When you surrender to the will of God, when you are depending on the promised Holy Spirit to guide you, and when you are taking in the life of Jesus so that His life will be reflected through your life, what you ask or wish for will begin to line up with what God knows you really need, and what you need most is the thing that God has called you into. The power that is working within us, is what made your salvation, redemption, and regeneration possible. It is the power of the Holy Spirit who provides a resurrecting and miracle working power that Jesus promised to each of His follower. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit will be our Helper who will be with His people forever (John 14:16-31), will guide His people into all truth (16:5-15), and will empower His people to accomplish Christs mission to redeem the nations (Acts 1:8). The power that was responsible for the creation of the universe and resurrection of Jesus is the same power the indwells every true follower of Jesus to live and walk in the good works God prepared beforehand for His people to walk in (Eph. 2:10). God is Working All Things Out for His Glory Why is God working all things out for our good? Why did He choose you? Why did He redeem you through the blood of the Lamb? Why did He seal and empower you to live a life that honors Him? The answer is in the first five words of verse 21, To Him be the glory. The prophet Isaiah said of the glory of God: For My own sake, for My own sake, I will act; for how can My name be profaned? And I will not give My glory to another (Isa. 48:11). In Romans 11:36, Gods glory is described in His worth: For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor? Or Who has first given to Him, that it would be paid back to him? For from Him, and through Him, and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen (Rom. 11:3436). So, to Him be the glory in what or who, Paul? His answer is three-fold: in the church, in Christ Jesus, and to all generations forever and ever. Why on earth would we think that God would want to do anything through us? Because He is for His glory, and because He is for His glory, He is for your good. What is your good Christian? Your good is that you get God! The greatest and most loving thing God can give you is Himself! For from the rising of the sun even to its setting, My name shall be great among the nations, and in every place frankincense is going to be offered to My name, and a grain offering that is pure; for My name shall be great among the nations, says the Lord of armies. (Mal. 1:11) I, I alone, am the one who wipes out your wrongdoings for My own sake, and I will not remember your sins. (Isa. 43:25) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, with which He favored us in the Beloved. (Eph. 1:36) In light of all that we have discovered and been reminded of throughout our time in Ephesians, maybe you have asked the question: Did God go too far? Did God go too far by choosing me of all people before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4)? Is God the victim of a poor investment because he chose me before the foundation of the world for good works He prepared beforehand? I dont know if you have ever asked questions like these, but if Ephesians 3:20-21 teaches us anything, it is this: God is not limited because He is infinitely sovereign, and because He is infinitely sovereign, He does not invest poorly. He has redeemed you who were once dead and now has made you alive for His glory and your good! And brothers and sisters, He is doing the same thing all over the world. He is being glorified in the Church by what He is doing in the Church and through the Church. He is glorified in and through the redemptive work of Christ who made our salvation possible! He is being glorified and forever will be glorified because of Who He Is! God is He who, is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us for His glory and our good! The more of Him you discover, the more you will trust Him to do what He alone is able to do in His time and according to His good will. I heard someone say it this way: The deeper our understanding of God goes, the more childlike our faith will become. I heard a song written by people I never heard before titled, Christ be All. I must have listened to it a dozen times or more this week because it is so good! On November 12, 1688, Susanna married Samuel Wesley who had become an Anglican priest. Together the Wesleys had at least 17 children (some believe they had 19 children), and of those children, only 10 survived infancy; one child was crippled, and another did not learn to speak until he was six years old. If 10 mouths to feed and children to clothe was not enough for both parents, Samuel Wesley was a poor steward and manager of money, not a very good husband to Susanna, and was frequently away from home for long periods. I read that during her lifetime as both a mother and a wife, Susanna was sick often, there was little money for food, and debt plagued their family and household because of Samuels poor management of money. Samuel was once thrown into debtors prison because their debt was so high. Twice the homes they lived in throughout their marriage were destroyed by fire along with much of what they owned. Someone slit their cows udders so they wouldnt have milk, killed their dog, and burned their flax field.[3] Susanna had little time between her duties as a mother, the need to work their gardens, milk their cows, educate their children, and manage their home, all with little help. However, she managed to spend about two hours a day praying because she believed in the God of Ephesians 3:20-21. Because it was nearly impossible to find a quiet place to pray, she used her apron and told her children that when they saw her head covered with her apron, they were not permitted to disturb her because she was praying. Of Samuel and Susannas ten surviving children, God would use John and Charles profoundly to reach the lost and impact the world they lived inmostly due to the foundation of the Word of God laid by their mother and the prayers prayed on their behalf. John Wesley would grow to become a great evangelist whom God used to preach to nearly one million people in his lifetime. Charles would be used by God to write over 9,000 hymns, of which many are still sung in our churches today.[4] One of those hymns is a favorite of mine: And Can It Be, That I Should Gain. Consider three of its five verses: And can it be that I should gainAn interest in the Savior's bloodDied He for me, who caused His painFor me, who Him to death pursued?Amazing love! How can it beThat Thou, my God, should die for me? He left His Father's throne aboveSo free, so infinite His graceEmptied Himself of all but loveAnd bled for Adam's helpless raceTic mercy all, immense and freeFor O my God, it found out me!Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, should die for me? No condemnation now I dreadJesus, and all in Him, is mineAlive in Him, my living HeadAnd clothed in righteousness divineBold I approach the eternal throneAnd claim the crown, through Christ my ownAmazing love! How can it beThat Thou my God, should die for me? Now, like a well-aged, perfectly seasoned steak cooked by a master chef, Ephesians 3:20-21 is before us, and every bit of these two verses is meant to be savored. So, lets savor one of the great doxological statements in the Bible: Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. This statement in Ephesians 3:20-21 is in response to what God has done, is doing, and will continue to do in the life of the one He has chosen, redeemed, and secured as His child. Paul has brought us to the threshold of where our understanding and imagination can go, that we who were once dead in our offences and sins (2:1), can know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that we may be filled to all the fullness of God (3:19). In his sermon on this same passage, James Montgomery Boice wrote in response: This is beyond comprehension; we cannot even begin to imagine how we can be filled with Gods own fullness. We stand on the edge of the infinite. And yet, Paul is still not satisfied. He has prayed that God will do something we cannot even imagine; and now, having exhausted his ability to speak and write along that line, he bursts out in praise to God who, he says, is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us (v. 20).[5] So, what are these verses teaching us? What hope do they provide you? I believe that the answer is profound yet simple. God is Working All Things Out for Our Good How is God working all things out for our good and how do we know He is working all things out for our good? Well, let me begin by answering how we know that He is working all things out for our good. For starters, our God can work all things out for our good! Paul begins verse 20 with six simple words: Now to Him who is able. God is able because He is not an idol. The Greek word used for do is poieō, which means to do, make, cause, or appoint. In other words, God is not like the stuff or gods that people worship; He can do what they cannot! He is not made with hands or created through any persons imagination. He is God! The God who is able is He who declares of Himself: Remember the former things long past, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things which have not been done, saying, My plan will be established, and I will accomplish all My good pleasure; calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of My purpose from a distant country. Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass. I have planned it, I will certainly do it. Listen to Me, you stubborn-minded, who are far from righteousness. I bring near My righteousness, it is not far off; and My salvation will not delay. And I will grant salvation in Zion, and My glory for Israel. (Isaiah 46:913) God alone is able to choose, redeem, and keep any He wills for the purpose of lavishing His rich mercy, great love, and all-sufficient grace upon any that He grants salvation. God chooses, redeems, and keeps because He will accomplish all His good pleasure (Isa. 46:10b). Because God is able, He can do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think. God is not like the compromising parent in the grocery store that will offer or give whatever the child wants just so he/she can get the child to shut up. God gives His children what is good for them and what they need. Sometimes what we want lines up with what He knows that we need, but there are times that what we are convinced we need is not what we need at all because it ultimately may not even be good for us. However, if we are surrendering ourselves to Gods will (vv. 14-15), if we are desiring a dependance upon the Holy Spirit (vv. 16-17a), and we are walking in union with Christ (vv. 17-19), then what you think you need will begin to line up with what God knows you need. That is not all though, for the thing you do not know you need to ask for, God knows, and He is, able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think Listen, when your thinking begins to line up with the heart of what God wants for you, you will find yourself asking for the very thing God desires for you. This is what Jesus said would happen if you abide (remain) in Him: If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you (John 15:7). When you surrender to the will of God, when you are depending on the promised Holy Spirit to guide you, and when you are taking in the life of Jesus so that His life will be reflected through your life, what you ask or wish for will begin to line up with what God knows you really need, and what you need most is the thing that God has called you into. The power that is working within us, is what made your salvation, redemption, and regeneration possible. It is the power of the Holy Spirit who provides a resurrecting and miracle working power that Jesus promised to each of His follower. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit will be our Helper who will be with His people forever (John 14:16-31), will guide His people into all truth (16:5-15), and will empower His people to accomplish Christs mission to redeem the nations (Acts 1:8). The power that was responsible for the creation of the universe and resurrection of Jesus is the same power the indwells every true follower of Jesus to live and walk in the good works God prepared beforehand for His people to walk in (Eph. 2:10). God is Working All Things Out for His Glory Why is God working all things out for our good? Why did He choose you? Why did He redeem you through the blood of the Lamb? Why did He seal and empower you to live a life that honors Him? The answer is in the first five words of verse 21, To Him be the glory. The prophet Isaiah said of the glory of God: For My own sake, for My own sake, I will act; for how can My name be profaned? And I will not give My glory to another (Isa. 48:11). In Romans 11:36, Gods glory is described in His worth: For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor? Or Who has first given to Him, that it would be paid back to him? For from Him, and through Him, and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen (Rom. 11:3436). So, to Him be the glory in what or who, Paul? His answer is three-fold: in the church, in Christ Jesus, and to all generations forever and ever. Why on earth would we think that God would want to do anything through us? Because He is for His glory, and because He is for His glory, He is for your good. What is your good Christian? Your good is that you get God! The greatest and most loving thing God can give you is Himself! For from the rising of the sun even to its setting, My name shall be great among the nations, and in every place frankincense is going to be offered to My name, and a grain offering that is pure; for My name shall be great among the nations, says the Lord of armies. (Mal. 1:11) I, I alone, am the one who wipes out your wrongdoings for My own sake, and I will not remember your sins. (Isa. 43:25) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, with which He favored us in the Beloved. (Eph. 1:36) In light of all that we have discovered and been reminded of throughout our time in Ephesians, maybe you have asked the question: Did God go too far? Did God go too far by choosing me of all people before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4)? Is God the victim of a poor investment because he chose me before the foundation of the world for good works He prepared beforehand? I dont know if you have ever asked questions like these, but if Ephesians 3:20-21 teaches us anything, it is this: God is not limited because He is infinitely sovereign, and because He is infinitely sovereign, He does not invest poorly. He has redeemed you who were once dead and now has made you alive for His glory and your good! And brothers and sisters, He is doing the same thing all over the world. He is being glorified in the Church by what He is doing in the Church and through the Church. He is glorified in and through the redemptive work of Christ who made our salvation possible! He is being glorified and forever will be glorified because of Who He Is! God is He who, is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us for His glory and our good! The more of Him you discover, the more you will trust Him to do what He alone is able to do in His time and according to His good will. I heard someone say it this way: The deeper our understanding of God goes, the more childlike our faith will become. I heard a song written by people I never heard before titled, Christ be All. I must have listened to it a dozen times or more this week because it is so good! Today's passage, Hebrews 10, verses 19–25, tell us three things that we as Christians should do: let us draw near – verse 22, let us hold fast – verse 23, and let us consider others – verse 24.We just heard those verses. We can see ‘em plainly here in the text: verses 22, 23, & 24 give us a pretty straightforward 1-2-3 of what we as Christians should do. Which means this passage is an easy passage to preach. In fact, true story: I have preached this passage before: when I was 20-years-old, in a small church service, in the country of Slovenia, with a translator, and I don't think I knew a thing about preaching — I just figured that this passage was clear enough that as long as I said what the text says, I'd be okay. And I'll be honest with you, that's all I'm trying to do today — I wanna say what the text says — but because the passage is so straightforward, I'm gonna try to explain what's going on here by reversing the order of the argument. I think this will help us to let the passage sink in for us. The writer of Hebrews is making a logical argument, and as readers, our goal is to understand his argument. We want to know what he means:He starts in verses 19–21 and says, clearly, therefore, since, let us do 1-2-3 (in verses 22–25). That's the order of the text. But what I'd like to do is to start with what we should do (the 1-2-3), and then end on: we do these things because of verses 19–21.So it's the same logic, just restated (and I think this will help it sink in). And right away, notice that each of these verses — 22, 23, and 24 — start the same way: let us, let us, let us. These verbs are for the whole church, including the writer, and they're aspirational. (This is in the original grammar.) We want to do these things. That's the mood here. There's a team, community spirit of “C'mon y'all! Let's go! This is how we wanna live!”1) Verse 22: C'mon y'all, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith.“Draw near” is the main verb and it means what it says: Come close. Approach. Move towards. And it's been a few months since we've been in Hebrews, so you may not remember this, but we've heard this language before: Hebrews 4:16, “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace…” Hebrews 7:19, “(for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.” Hebrews 7:25, “Consequently, he [Jesus] is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.” This same idea of drawing near is repeated here in Chapter 10. It's a major theme in Hebrews. We are called to draw near to God, and that's something we always do. Once we are in Christ, we are forever, increasingly moving further up and further in. And the Book of Leviticus is our blue-print for this. As the people of God, remember, we live in an Edenic movement! We are moving life-ward. And we move in this direction, closer to God, “with [verse 22] a true heart in full assurance of faith.” Does anybody in here have one of those hearts? How do we know if we have a “true heart in full assurance of faith”? Our New Covenant RealityWell, the question is: have you experienced God's promise of the new covenant? Because that's what this is referring to, Ezekiel 36:26, God promises: “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.” This is what the writer is thinking about. And he's thinking the same thing when he says in verse 22: “with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” The writer of Hebrews has the new covenant in mind, which he just explained to us in Chapter 8, and most likely he's thinking about Ezekiel 36 in particular. In the Old Testament book of Ezekiel, right before God promises to give members of the new covenant a new heart, God says, Ezekiel 36:25, “I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you will be clean.” So the repeated rituals of man cleansing himself are over. God has done that now. He has washed us with pure water.Basically, the call in verse 22, is: C'mon, y'all, let us draw near to God with the promises of the new covenant as our reality, which means our hearts are made new and true and clean.That's the first thing Christians should do. Here's the second:2) Verse 23: C'mon, y'all, let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering.The verb “to hold fast” is another theme in the Book of Hebrews. We've also heard this one before, back in Chapter 4, verse 14, “Let us hold fast our confession.” Here in Chapter 10 it's the “confession of our hope,” but it's the same idea. Confession or hope or confession of our hope — the writer is talking about what we look forward to as Christians. This is our future. It's what God has promised to do, which is what we embrace now.One good example of this is the way the apostle Paul talks about hope in Romans Chapter 8. In the Romans 8 — the Great Eight — Paul describes the future glory of all creation. He says that all creation, this entire world, will be set free from its bondage to decay, and that we ourselves, in Christ, will receive the final and complete redemption of our bodies. He is talking about the final resurrection when our mortal bodies will put on immortality — no more disease or cancer or headaches or men's retreat basketball aches and pains. Our bodies will be fully redeemed — and Paul says, Romans 8:24, “For in this hope we were saved.”Listen: our hope is not in what Jesus gets us now. Paul says in another place, “If in this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied” (1 Corinthians 15:19). So we don't hope in Jesus for present-day perks. This is the problem of Mr. By-Ends in Pilgrim's Progress. Jesus never meant to be your ticket to win friends and influence people. Jesus died to save all of you for all time. He died to save your life and your afterlife and that's our hope. C'mon y'all, let's hold fast to our hope without wavering.Why We Can Hold FastAnd here's the reason why: “for he who promised is faithful.”We can hold fast to the hope of our future because the promiser of our future is faithful — which means he always does what he says. And in fact, all the blessings of our life in Christ now started as promises in the past. Get this: Our present blessings were once the future of past promises, and if God was faithful to fulfill those promises, he will be faithful to fulfill promises still here today. He's not done yet. This is really important. Because sometimes we can doubt this. Let's be honest. Is Jesus really coming back? — because from our perspective, in how we think about time —which is different than how God thinks — but to us it's been a while. We think 1,993 years is forever.And what happens is we think: it is taking God so long to fulfill his promise I don't think he will.And the writer of Hebrews would say: “Of course he will. ‘See Old Testament'.” The apostle Paul actually tells us that one of the purposes of the Old Testament is to give us instruction and examples and encouragement for our hope — Hebrews 11 (see Romans 15:4; 1 Corinthians 10:11). We just have to look at the Book. He who promised is faithful. If he's done it before, he'll do it again. C'mon y'all, let's hold fast the confession of our hope.3) Verse 24: C'mon, y'all, let us consider one another, to spur us on.Now most English translations say this a few different ways: The English Standard Version says “let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works.” The New American Standard says stimulate. Other translations use words like motivate or provoke or to spur on. They're all getting at the same idea, but the word that we need to really consider is the word “consider.” That's the main verb here. In the original, it's “Let us consider one another, to spur on, stir up, etc. …” And this idea of “consider” doesn't mean to put it off and get to it later. “Dad, can I have your credit card and go to the mall all day Saturday with some friends of a friend you don't know?” … “I'll consider it.”That's not what it means here. This word means “to think about something carefully.” It means to direct the mind towards something with concern. Really mull this over. The word is actually used one other time in Hebrews, in Hebrews 3:1, which goes: “Holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession.” So first, in Chapter 3, the writer tells us to consider, to think carefully about Jesus; and now here in Chapter 10 he tells us to think carefully about one another. Focus on this. Focus on one another to spur on one another to love and good works. Our Words for One AnotherAnd now this has all kinds of relevance for what it means to be a church community. Notice in verse 25 that in order for these Christians to consider one another to spur on one another they have to get together. Imagine that! The writer spells this out: he says don't neglect to meet together as is the habit of some, but meet together, “encouraging one another.”Now this is interesting, because that word for “encouraging” could also be translated “exhorting.” In fact, it's the same word the writer uses in Chapter 13, verse 33, when he says that he's written to them a “word of exhortation.” In that verse, he's talking about a sermon. (We mentioned this at the start this year. Most scholars agree that the Book of Hebrews is most likely an actual sermon from the early church. You could read the whole thing in 45-minutes). So there is “exhorting one another,” which we're all called to do everyday, but especially when we meet together (see Hebrews 3:13). And there's a “word of exhortation” that refers to a sermon. And both of these happen when the church gathers — which means: one of the most important actions that take place on Sunday mornings is the words that we speak to one another. There is this formal word of exhortation/encouragement, but then there are the hundreds of words we say before and after this time, and those words are a big reason why we do this. It's mutual encouragement.Foreshadowing a Greater GatheringAnd the writer says, we should gather and encourage one another all the more as, verse 25, “you see the Day drawing near.”He's talking about the Day when Jesus returns, and we might think: How'd he get there? How'd he go from talking about Sunday church services to talking about Jesus's return?Well, there's a connection: It's that when the church gathers for worship and mutual encouragement — what we're doing now — this gathering is actually anticipating the final gathering of God's people in the New Jerusalem. The writer of Hebrews is saying, Church, keep gathering together, encouraging one another, especially as we get closer to heaven every day when there we gather with the universal church across all time and place. Our gathering here is a little foreshadowing of that gathering then. I think he's also saying: If you don't like getting together with other Christians now … we need more practice. C'mon y'all, let us consider one another, to spur us on to love and good works.Faith, Hope, and LoveAnd there you go, those are the three things these verses tell us to do. As Christians, we are called to: draw near, hold fast, consider one another. And you might be wondering, is there any design to these callings? Are these three callings related at all?This is fascinating to me. (I didn't know this when I was 20, among other things) Listen to these callings again:Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith.Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope.Let us consider one another, to spur us on to love.Did you hear it? These three verses echo the “cardinal graces” of the Christian life: faith, hope, and love. Remember Paul said in 1 Corinthians 13: “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” Well, guess what? From verse 25 and onward, the rest of this book is the application of considering one another to spur us on to love.Hebrews 10:19–25 is a hinge passage in the Book of Hebrews. It marks the ending of one section and sets up the beginning of a new one, and this new section is all about exhortation. It's the church's application of love for one another. The Theological Heart of the BookThe reason we had heard some of this language before in Hebrews — the draw near and hold fast and Jesus as our high priest — we've heard it before because Chapter 10:19–21 is basically repeating Chapter 4:14–16, because those two passages, 4 and 10, are two bookends to one major section. And that major section, from 5 through 10:18, is the central theological argument of this entire book. And what is that? What is the main point that the central theological argument of Hebrews is making?Well, that's actually what Hebrews 10:19–21 summarizes for us. Remember we reversed the order. We started with verses 22–25, with what we should do, but it's verses 19–21 that tells us why we should do these things. Verses 19–21 give us the because — and “the because” is a three-verse summary of the theological heart of the Book of Hebrews. These verses pull together all the main themes from Chapter 5 through Chapter 10. Listen to these three verses, and see if you can pick them up. Hebrews 10, verse 19: “Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God… [now here's the 1-2-3 of what we do — let us, let us, let us.]” It all comes back to the central theme here that Jesus Christ, by his high priestly sacrifice and current ministry, gives us access into the presence of God.Notice there are two things that we have in verses 19 and 21:Verse 19: We have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus.Verse 21: We have a great priest. These are the two things that have been explained to us more than anything else in Chapters 5–10: the sacrificial death of Jesus and the high priestly ministry of Jesus. And these are not separate things, but they're two aspects of the same thing. And I hope that if there's only one lasting change in us from the Book of Hebrews — I hope it's that we always think about the death of Jesus with him as our high priest. That's verse 21 here.Jesus, Our Great Priest“We have a great priest over the house of God.”This is not something that Jesus “can do.” It's not a side-gig. This is his office.Jesus is our great high priest. And so everything he does, he does as our high priest. And that means, as Chapters 5 and 7 tell us, Jesus knows what it's like to be you. He can sympathize with you and your weakness and all the things that make life in this world hard. He knows it and he's going to save you anyway, all the way. Jesus plays for keeps, and his promise to save you, to bring you home, to finish what he started — that promise is as indestructible as his life. Because Jesus is our high priest, as long as Jesus is alive, we will be saved completely. Everything that has to do with our salvation is now bound up in the realness and aliveness of Jesus. He is who he is right now, and he will be that tomorrow and the next day and the next and forever. He's not going anywhere; he's not changing; he doesn't quit. And that is why we will see him one day. We have a great priest.By the Blood of JesusAnd he made a great sacrifice. That's what the writer is talking about in verses 19 and 20. You can see that he mentions blood in verse 19. Y'all see that in verse 19?He says in verse 19, “Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus…” He's talking about the sacrifice of Jesus, and he expands what he means in the next sentence in verse 20. He says, “by the blood of Jesus” and he implies: When I say by blood of Jesus, I mean “by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh.”Here he's telling us what the blood of Jesus accomplished. And it's levitical. We can't really understand any of this without the Old Testament Book of Leviticus. So let's think back to Leviticus and temple (or think back to Hebrews Chapter 9 because the writer explains the temple to us there). The temple was the center of Jewish life, and in the temple, there were two sections, the Holy Place and then the Most Holy Place. That was the place where the direct, terrifying, awesome presence of God dwelled. And what separated that Most Holy Place from the rest was a curtain. It was so holy behind the curtain, in the Most Holy Place, that nobody could go there. Nobody could be that close to God — except for only the high priest, who went there only once a year, on the Day of Atonement. He was the only one who could go behind the curtain.But now, by his blood, by his death, Jesus has opened that curtain. When Jesus died, the curtain died. That's the point here. The curtain has been done away with. It's no more. And that's what is loaded into this phrase, verse 19, in the very first verse: “we have confidence to enter the holy places.” (Now the ESV translates that as “holy places” but the Greek word is just “the holies.” The NIV translates this “the Most Holy Place” and that's right. That's what the writer of Hebrews is talking about.)By the blood of Jesus, by his sacrificial death that got rid of the curtain, “we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place.”And that's a simple sentence … but this is actually one of the most radical truths in the whole Bible. This truth would have absolutely shocked a Jewish believer.And a lot of it has to do with that word “confidence.” This is a great word in the New Testament. It has a range of meanings. It's already been used in Hebrews 4:16, but we need to be sure we get the meaning here in 10:19.I asked the kids at dinner this past week, “What does the word ‘confidence' mean?” And right away, one of the boys said, “It means to believe in yourself.” And I said, Yeah, that's what we typically think, but that is not what the meaning is in Hebrew 10:19.In Hebrews 10:19, when the writer says “we have confidence” another way to translate that is to say “we have access.” Confidence here is objective, not subjective. It's fact, not feeling. The writer doesn't say “We feel confident.” He says, “We have confidence.” We possess this. So scholars have said we could translate this as “we have freedom” or access or freedom of access or authorization. I like the word authorization. Because that nails the idea. The writer says we have authorization to the Most Holy Place.He means we have authorization to be in the direct and awesome presence of God. Which is not in an earthly physical temple anymore. That was only a shadow. The real temple is the heavenly temple. Heaven is where God is, and we have access there, to him.We Have AuthorizationSo I've got this friend (who I won't name), and one of things I love about hanging out with him is that he knows all the best spots. He always knows the coolest restaurants and the places to go. And this one time we were hanging out in a city (which I also won't name), and sure enough, he says, “I know a place.” There was a new rooftop restaurant that just opened and it was supposed to have the best views of the city, all that — but the only thing was that it was connected to a hotel and the only people who have access to this rooftop are hotel guests. But he's like: It's fine, follow me. So I do, and somehow, we wind up on an elevator crowded with hotel guests, and we're just riding this thing crossing our fingers that somebody with a hotel key is going to the rooftop. Sure enough we get there. Doors open. And it's amazing. Incredible spot. Best views. And we spend a couple hours hanging out, but I can't say I was having a great time because I kept thinking “I'm not supposed to be here.” My conscience is about as tender as ketchup. I felt like an imposter. I was there, but I didn't belong there.Christian, you should never feel that way about the presence of God. You can go there — we can enter God's presence, and one day, physically, we will enter God's presence, direct and awesome, we will be with him, because we have authorization. We have access. We belong behind the curtain.But why? How? How do we have that right? How do we have the authorization to be close to God in his direct and awesome presence that nobody like us could ever experience before? How is that so?The blood. Our high priest who lives forever and even right now, he has applied the blood for us, and the blood he has applied is his own. He has gone before us. And everywhere Jesus can go, we can go. And he waves the key of his sacrificial death: They belong here. They're with me.We have … we have … we have authorization to be with God. …That's the theological heart of this book.Therefore, let us, let us, let us … faith, hope, and love.That's what brings us to the Table. The TableWhen we eat this bread and drink this cup, we remember the death of Jesus for us. That Nothing can for sin atone: nothing but the blood of Jesus.That Naught of good that I have done: nothing but the blood of Jesus.This is all my hope and peace! This is all my righteousness!Nothing but the blood of Jesus. I believe Whitney Houston had more than the gift of singing.Whitney Houston had love for people. She looked as if she gave the best hugs. Whitney loved her family, and just watching her on television made me feel like she was my family. She looked like she was somebody's big sister or aunt. Whitney had it all in her personality.Whenever I talk or sing about Whitney Houston, I feel something. Maybe it's just her Angel. I know there's a listening God above. He pays attention to our hearts, and he knows everything. We are all one spirit family. We are all in the body of Christ from my understanding of 1 Corinthians 12:13. Maybe that's what we feel from those that have left us in Christ. We hope that loved ones are in Christ, but I believe that God has a way of letting us know. The Comforter is with us.This world has gotten crazier since Whitney Houston has been gone. Music is not as much to me since she's been gone. Whitney's music is in us. Memories of her are in his. But am I? She had such an image that she kept up. She was very prim and proper. You know, she had perfectly coiffed hair, and she had to have her face on, and she had to have her jewelry on. And my grandfather was buttoned down shirts, ties, jackets when you went to visit him. They were not to be seen even in private or in public when they were not wearing those, you know, what felt like uniforms of the, um, prim and properness of it all. In her home, you know, there was the matching bedroom set, and then in the dining room, the table and the, the armoire and the buffet, and the chairs, like everything was all about how it looked.It was a little three bedroom ranch. All the rooms were kind of small. But what really struck you when you went to see her was when you walked into the living room, with the green and gold furniture – 'cause that was her color scheme – right over the fireplace, was a giant picture of my grandmother. Posed, sitting there, stately, lording over this home.And that was just showing that she was really, she was the one in control of that home. And all the while she had this wild side of her that she couldn't talk about or share.[00:02:07]LORI: Welcome back to Mementos. I'm Lori Mortimer, the host and producer of the show. If you're listening for the first time, thank you. It's great to have you here. This week, we have our first grandma episode! My guest, Bréjean, is going to tell us about a memento that's helped her see her grandmother in an entirely new light. Just a heads up that there's some content in this episode that's not suitable for kids. Bréjean lives in the U.S. with her wife their cats. They're also the parents to two adult unschooled children who have long been out of the house. Her story starts in 2012, after her mother passed away. [00:02:50]BRÉJEAN: And when that happened, I went to her house to go through her belongings. And there was like a little linen closet in the hallway.Now, this house belonged to her parents. And when her parents died, she moved into the house. So a lot of the belongings in the house were from my grandparents, Ruth and Sal. So I went through the belongings, and I went through that closet, and way on the top shelf, underneath some towels, was a brown envelope.And it said my grandmother's name on it. And it said “poetry.” And sure enough, I saw what my mother had told me many, many years ago when I was a little, that my grandmother was a poet.[00:03:37]LORI: Even though Bréjean knew her grandmother was a poet, she'd never seen any of the poetry and they never talked about it. The poems had been stored carefully and neatly, in chronological order, in an envelope and with a label that matched the way Bréjean's grandfather stored all the important papers in that house.Her early writings when she was little were all to do with nature. And they were very, um, sort of faith based. It was a lot of mention of God in her poetry, but a lot of mention of the beauty of nature, which really spoke to me because I'm pagan. So I found my spirituality in nature, and I found that really interesting that my grandmother, as a young girl, felt the same way.[00:04:34] BRÉJEAN: February 8th, 1933, Ruth, age 12. A poem called “A Tree.”Have you ever seen anythingAs lovely as a tree?Anything more usefulOr more beautiful to see?They are messengers of God,Who sent them from aboveTo help us and remind usOf the good God and his loveAnd so we should not forgetWhen we look up and seeThe power and beauty of the LordAll revealed in a treeIsn't that wonderful? And I love that because as a pagan, one of our holidays is called Mabon, and Mabon is when we hug trees. So we go out, and everyone finds a tree in the yard and communes with it and hugs it. And I can just picture my grandmother writing this poem, sitting in her yard, looking up at the trees. And she was inspired to write a poem about them.And I just felt such a connection. 'Cause I could see myself having written exactly the same poem at her age. The mention of God, I would have expressed that differently, but the wonder and the sacredness and the spirituality was the same for me as it was for her. And in that way, I just felt like, Hey, I knew you.I knew you when you were little. I was you when you were little and I was little, and that is a really wonderful thing for me. It's almost like genetics. It's almost like we all have that in our genes, in my family. And my children do, too. Like, they're very connected to nature. So those are the ways in which we keep those connections going through our ancestors. And we don't even know that were doing it. I didn't even know that my grandmother had these interests. And there they were this whole time in an envelope in the top of her closet.There were so many years where there was no writings of hers at all. So clearly she was raising her family. She was doing all of that stuff. And then she, uh, entered the workforce later on in life. And then she rediscovered her, her love of writing. [00:07:08]LORI: In the envelope, Bréjean found poems that very much sounded like the adult version of young Ruth, with reflections on nature and family. BRÉJEAN: And then, and then I found 18 pages of an erotic poem that my grandmother wrote. Hello, grandma. [Laughter.][00:07:44]LORI: Hello, indeed. I will say that what Bréjean refers to as an erotic poem is truly porn. The poem is written in the first person. And the protagonist is an 18-year-old girl out in the workforce for the first time. BRÉJEAN:“Diary of a French Steno”I am a young stenographer. My age is just 18.And I will frankly tell you of the things I've heard and seen.The men have always called me a very pretty girl.They say my form is perfect. My mother named me Pearl. And then on we go.[00:08:23]LORI: Each stanza tells a story about how Pearl pinched, pulled, groped. Constantly sexually harassed at a series of jobs.And every time she defended herself from these assaults, she lost her job. Eventually, Pearl has had enough. And she decides at her next interview, she's gonna take control of the situation.BRÉJEAN: At last, I have decided to take things as they came,And if I lost another job, I'd have myself to blame.And then she proceeded to have this really sexual relationship with the man that's her boss.Like, she was victimized by these men until she turned it around and said, alright, I'm gonna use this. I'm gonna, I'm gonna look at my sexuality as a power that I'm gonna take charge of this, you know, relationship. Kind of like, if this is gonna to happen to me anyway, I'm gonna own it.And I'm gonna take control of it.[00:09:41]LORI: The last half of the poem describes Pearl and her boss getting it on, over and over.BRÉJEAN: She goes on and on and on and on. With words for body parts that I never knew.I would never have believed that my grandmother would have written that. Especially just sort of her outward appearance being so perfect all the time. And she had this secret side of herself at a time where, certainly women could not be exploring their sexuality.[00:10:38]LORI: After the long poem, the envelope contained a short story. And that revealed another connection between Bréjean and her grandmother. BRÉJEAN: It was queer writing. You know, my grandmother wrote about, uh, experiences with other women, which I found fascinating because I'm a lesbian and both my children are queer.[00:11:03]LORI: It's the story of a high school girl named Jan who's exploring her sexuality with other teens.BRÉJEAN: Jan had a very explicit encounter with, with her sister named Helen. But the way that she wrote it was very much … it was like a sexual fantasy between two women. And I don't think that the incestual piece of that was the point. I think the point was -- at least that's my takeaway now -- as I'm looking at this thinking that somebody who was repressed because of her religion or her upbringing or society or whatever was happening around her, like this was a way that she could talk about having a lesbian, um, experience with somebody, in -- I don't know if I would use the word safe -- but in a way that she would understand. [00:11:59] LORI: In the envelope, along with the short story, Bréjean found an adult porn magazine from the same era. She sees a connection between the fantasy world of Ruth's story and the material world of the magazine. [00:12:12]BRÉJEAN: I really think that my grandmother was bisexual.I feel like that magazine was my grandmother's way of being able to access images of women, naked women, who are having sex with each other, even though there were men involved. Coupled with this porn that she wrote, that was her way of being able to experience something that she wasn't able to really experience. Like this fantasy or this desire to be with other women.I mean, you could look at that magazine and think, well, maybe it was Grandpa's magazine, but it wasn't Grandpa's magazine. It was with Grandma's poetry. [00:12:55]Everything was all about appearances for her. So if she really thought it would tarnish her reputation to be out in any way as bisexual, she would have thought that that was the worst thing that could happen. So how torturous that would have been for her to, to live in a, in a prison, a prison of many bars, of many definitions. So it makes sense that she would keep everybody at an arm's length, that she would play her cards close to her chest, that she would be, you know, unapproachable, that she would not be able to open up warmly. When I came across her porn writing I felt like I was almost, um, violating her privacy.But then when I thought about it, it was, it was saved. That envelope had survived through her life. And then after she passed, my grandfather kept it. And then when he passed, my mother moved into that house. And it's interesting because my mom was pretty conservative in a lot of ways. And she must have had some kind of pride in my grandmother's writings because my mom knew everything that was in that house. And she, she knew what was in that closet. And I think that's interesting that it was in the closet. Literally.[00:14:45]It felt like it was meant for us -- and by us I mean my family -- to know this side of Ruth. And we had such a good time reading it all with both of my kids sitting around the kitchen table that day. We still talk about it. We talk about grandma's porn.I think that my grandmother would have been at least proud that someone found her writing, and that's where I struggle with what to do with it from this point on.I wrestle with the concept of coming out versus not coming out. And certainly, she chose not to. But it's important, especially in the queer community, for us to know our history.Do I publish it so that other queer people can see a part of our history in the writings of a woman who could not speak out loud who she was?[00:16:00]So I'm torn about what to do with it, but I think so much about my grandmother and about what life was like for her and what would have been different for her had she been able to be out. But I think that's the case for many queer people. I mean, myself included.I didn't come out until I was 40. Um, so I think the parallels are kind of interesting because she would have written that queer porn around that same age.I'll never know if she wants it published, if she wants it shared with the rest of the world. Or whether just it's enough for her that her family knows. I just think that she would have been happy to have it in my hands.And I think about, like, sometimes we keep mementos because something will remind us of someone. Named RAWWTalks, these events draw upon the art of storytelling to cover topics of depression, anxiety, sexual empowerment, sexual trauma, sex education, mental abuse and many more subjects that are typically considered taboo. After interacting with the women impacted by RAWW’s work, she realized that there was a need for a tailored program that guides women in developing their voice. She found that most women had a story they wanted to tell but didn’t know how to tell it effectively. This led Diana to create the Your Story to Tell Academy, a 10-week storytelling coaching program to help women craft their own impactful narrative. Not only do women leave with a polished 6-10-minute personal story tested for public delivery, but they also gain skills and resources that will nourish all parts of their life moving forward. Recently, Diana was awarded the Community Champion of the Year by the Central California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and was selected to perform as an official Storyteller at the 2019 #WEALLGROW Summit.Diana is amazing and I love how she noticed there was a need in the community for her to share about mental health and break the stigma. Now 22 years old, Sara spends her time leading national campaigns and efforts to build consciousness and a call to action immigration reform matter.Known as @MissSaraMora on social media globally, Sara has become a sought-after voice in the work of social change and community empowerment. A college student, influencer, digital media strategist, Sara has dedicated her youth to being a symbol of empowerment and courage in the face of adversity. From the very short age of 10, Sara served as a youth voice at her local church and community organization. In highschool, Sara led conversation around the importance of empowering young students who like her were in need of role models. When she graduated high school she debuted as an activist when interviewing at the time President of Costa Rica, Luis Guillermo Solis(2014-2018) on DACA and questioning external countries role in supporting young people with DACA.After the Trump administration cruelly terminated the DACA program in September 2017, Sara Mora decided to come out publicly as undocumented, a leader for young people who are beneficiaries of the DREAM act. She is an organizer, digital guru and media strategist.Sara has been a model for many young people who are facing one of the most uncertain and frightening times in their lives. FOAM: FOAM are a three-piece garage rock band from Perth, WA. Their heavy live performances deliver a filthy wall of sound reminiscent of the alternative rock boom of the late 80’s/early 90’s. Since the release of their first EP Sarpa Salpa in July of 2012, FOAM have released a total of four EP’s, including a split with fellow Perth locals Puck. During this time they have toured the country on numerous occasions playing festivals such as MATES Sydney,Big Day Out and Groovin' The Moo, as well as headlining their own shows and supporting acts such as DZ Deathrays, Wax Witches and Sleepy Sun. In February of 2017, FOAM released their long awaited debut album Coping Mechanisms. The album was written in the basement beneath a toasted sandwich shop in Perth. It’s about coming to terms with yourself, the world around you, and the ways we try to make it work. Recorded at The Woolly Mammoth Ale House, Brisbane, 15th September 2017. Morning Harvey have supported acts like Dandy Warhols, Band Of Skulls, The Charlatans, and Royal Blood on stages around the country. Their single “Smith Street Swap Meet” also gained them attention from John Richards of Seattle radio station KEXP with a Song Of The Day placement leading to support from numerous US College Radio Stations. GlitterShip is still running a little bit behind, but we're almost caught up ... just in time for me to run off to Ohio for a week and a half to get surgery. Those who know me won't be surprised to hear this, but essentially after years of waiting, more crowdfunding (since insurance wouldn't deign to cover gender affirming surgery despite NY state laws, ugh), and more waiting... my top surgery is just around the corner. It's possible that I'll have to release episode 40 in June along with 41 and 42... but I'll do my best to get it out on time. Or at least, almost on time. Back onto the episode... today we have a piece of original fiction by Susan Jane Bigelow, "Mercy." Rion stood by the edge of the water, the waves curling around her bare, metal-and-plastic feet. She knelt by the water and placed her hand in. Sensors registered temperature, composition, motion. But they couldn’t find what Rion had lost. Here and there the remains of buildings stood like ghastly stick figures, silhouetted in the deepening cool of twilight. Rion stood and closed her eyes. She stretched her hands out and reached her sensors as far as they would go, but no. Nothing lived on this shore, now. She was alone. And so she lowered her arms and began walking, one step at a time, into the sea, until the water covered her head and she was gone. The quake and then the wave had come so suddenly that there had been no time to react. Rion’s memories were a jumble of shaking ground, rushing water, crashing buildings and pitiful screams followed by a hollow, awful silence. She walked onward, her weight keeping her firmly on the bottom of the sea. All around her, she could see the shapes and forms of the shattered town, now submerged. The waters grew dark, so she switched on the lights on her head, heart, and hands. A face swam before her, and she started, afraid. A woman, eyes open and sightless, drifted there at the bottom of the ocean like so much debris. Her name had been Iona, and she’d been kind to Rion. She’d had a bright smile, a quick temper, and a tendency to laugh a little too loud and too long. She’d been happy. Rion whispered an apology to her, and touched her cool metal fingers to the woman’s stiff forehead. She shut her eyes, and stood again. She looked up, and saw debris floating high above. Some of it was shaped like humans, some not. There was no way to help them now. She kept walking through what had been her home. She had come to this small town by the sea to be away from the turmoil of the cities, and she had found both work and unexpected friendship. The humans here had been so welcoming and accepting, so unlike anywhere else she’d ever gone on this world. She shone her light around. It fell on the gap in the sea wall where the tsunami had broken through, and everything suddenly seemed to turn on its edge. She made her way to the wall, and then walked through and beyond it, her lights illuminating the way. Fish swam all around her, attracted by her light, while little creatures scuttled across the bottom. She looked up, and her light couldn’t reach the surface. The sun had set, and; Rion was surrounded by frigid, suffocating darkness. What was she to do, now? She couldn’t stay here at the bottom of the sea forever. But she had no place to go back to on land. She sat down, then, on the rocks and sand, and switched her lights off. Rion’s sensors told her what she didn’t want to know about the sea all about her: it teemed with life. Life. Behind her there was so much death, and in front of her so much life. But what was she? What was an Artificial, compared to the dead she’d left behind and the sea creatures swimming all around her? At last, at last, she wailed in grief and empty fury at the dark waters. “Sovena! Sovena!” she cried to the planet. “Why? Why? Sovena, answer me!” And, for a wonder, the planet answered her. The ground shifted and a point far, far ahead of her blinked with a soft green glow. Daughter sei, said the vast network of artificial intelligence that was, for all purposes, the planet Sovena. A sei was a sentient artificial life form. Why do you cry to me? “Bring them back!” shouted Rion, wishing she could cry. But she had no tear ducts, no lungs, and no way of releasing this deep, sharp grief. The curse of her kind; suffering went on and on without relief. “Bring them back to me. Sovena, please! I tried so hard!” Tell me about them, said Sovena softly. Tell me of the people who drowned in my sea. “They fished,” said Rion, her voice shaking and distorted. “They made such beautiful things. They sang songs. And they baked bread for me—” She found she couldn’t continue, and keened softly at the rocks, putting her face in her hands. “Why did you kill them? Why?” The world shifts, said Sovena. The ground cracks and separates. My plates move, and cause the oceans to shudder. It is as it must be. “I know,” said Rion. “I know!” She gazed at the steadily blinking light far away in the shadows. “But please. Please bring them back. Humans have so many gods they cry out to… Artificials have nothing. But I have you. I have faith in you. Please. Please.” She bowed her head in prayer and supplication. “Please. I have lived a good life. Take me instead of them. At least give me a way to grieve for them!” Sovena said nothing for a long time. Then the ground seemed to move again, and she heard the planet whisper in her mind, Go back to the shore, daughter sei. “You’ll do nothing? You—of course not. You’re not a god. You’re just the planetary network become aware. Fine. Fine. I’ll go.” She stood, fury and sadness swirling around her in the cold depths. “They were good people. They didn’t deserve to die. I didn’t deserve to survive. I don’t understand. I don’t understand.” She turned and began to walk back through the darkness towards the remains of her home. Rion’s head broke the water, and the first thing she saw were the stars, high above. She hauled herself out of the water, and sat there on the beach. And then she realized she wasn’t alone. Machines surrounded her. They all blinked with green lights. Some of them were aware, some not, but they all waited there for her. And then they moved into the sea. Overhead, more machines circled, then dove into the water near where the sea wall had been. The water lit up with light as the machines worked. Rion watched, hardly daring to move. And then the water began to drain out of the basin of the town. The sea wall rose again. Machines covered where the town had been. They had cleared a space at the center, and lined up two hundred still and silent figures. Rion stood, then, and walked to the center of the ruins. For you, for you, she thought, addressing the dead, and her thoughts were transmitted to the machines. They swarmed over the town, bringing the debris and ruins to create. For you! For you! “Dream in slumber, children of the sky,” whispered Rion, the first lines of an old funeral song. “To the stars we return, to the night we go.” And then the machines took up the song, each singing with its own voice. Send your soul back home Across the deep darkness of the wastes For grace and forgiveness we beg For mercy and love we ask Find old Earth at last, and come to rest. They finished their creation. Rion was about to thank them when a sharp pain pierced her. She fell to the ground in agony as tiny machines swarmed all over her, and laughed as she was remade. When the sun rose that morning on what had been the town of Fisherman’s Bounty, the light kissed the spires of a fragile, delicately-made temple. At the top sat a human woman, crying her newly-made heart out. They found her, and fed and clothed her. She didn’t say who she was, and eventually they let the matter drop. She thought about hurling herself off the spire of the temple often during those first days. She was human, now. She would certainly join the people of the town in death. But then the wind would blow the smell of the sea to her nostrils, or the stars would shine brightly above, and she would curl her soft hands around the railing of the temple spire and say to herself: one more night. One night became two, and two nights became a week, then a month. Then the sun rose one morning, and Rion realized that she had decided to live. Time passed, then, as it always did. Relief ships came and went. The temple spire where the town had been became a pilgrimage site for haunted family, grieving survivors of the quake from other places, and the curious and morbid. Rion got used to being organic. She found it difficult to remember to eat and wash and groom, and for a time she found it nearly impossible to find food and fresh water. She felt dirty and hungry much of the time, and sleep, when it came, was a terror. But, in time, she managed. She found that she became good at managing, at carrying on. She moved out of the rickety temple spire and into a small modular house the relief agency had left by the side of the sea. The visitors stopped coming after a while. No one rebuilt the town. Why would they? It was a graveyard. But Rion stayed. She grew her garden, she made trinkets to sell, and she lived. And in time, a craftswoman named Lanika who had lost friends and family in the flood came to the hill above the low plain where the town had been to find Rion there, waiting, the promise of a new family in her strong grip and windswept brow. And so fifty years went by. The dawn was cool and the wind from the ocean was only a light, briny kiss. The summer had been kind, but the coolness that hung over the bay suggested the turn of the season. An aged, bent woman pushed the boat off the landing, and gingerly settled herself into it. And then she did what she’d feared to do for the last five decades; she set sail towards the middle of the sea. She sailed for hours, trying to remember where she had gone, what direction, how the sun had looked from deep under the water. But her memory was a loose, hollow thing, and she couldn’t hold the past as firmly as she once had. At last she came to a place that felt as good as any other. She set the offering papers on one of the small wooden boats Lanika crafted for mourners and the devout, put the boat on the undulating waters, and set it on fire. The boat sailed away, the offering papers with names written on each scrap crisping and blackening in the flames. And then Rion said her prayer. “Sovena,” she said. “Goddess. I know you’re there, somewhere under the water. Come and see an old woman who once followed you. Come and tell me why. “Sovena. Awake. Talk to me. Please.” She waited. For a long time, nothing happened. She started to get hungry; she had brought but little food and water with her. She waited anyway. And at last, as the sun slipped down below the horizon, she saw a green glow deep beneath the waves, slowly rising toward her. When the lights of whatever was down there had expanded to surround the boat and it was so close to the surface that she could reach down and touch it if she wanted, it stopped. Then there was a bubbling near her, and a silvery figure made of thousands of tiny crablike machines rose out of the water. Hello again, daughter human, said Sovena, her body writhing with the green-lit movement of its components. “I can hear you in my head,” said Rion, touching her temple. “How?” I left one small piece of you like you were, so that we could talk if you wished. “Ah,” said Rion, feeling a strange sense of betrayal. “I see.” It’s been many years, said Sovena, and Rion thought she sensed sorrow in the planetwide sei’s mental voice. “Tell me,” said Rion, her throat parched. “Why?” Her question could have meant many things, but Sovena understood at once. You grieved. And so I allowed you to mourn as you wished. “That’s not an answer,” said Rion, shaking her head as anger built. “I’ve thought about this for a long, long time. You left me on that tower, high above the waters. Did you ever think I’d come down from it?” No, said Sovena. “You gave me the ability to die,” said Rion. “That’s what you thought I wanted. To die like my friends had. Lungs full of water… to breathe the sea and sink!” Was that not what you wanted? Rion shook her head, tears brimming. She brushed them away with a calloused finger. “Of course it was.” But you are here. “I am,” Rion said, looking out over the darkening waters around her. “And I still don’t think you’ve told me. I think you always hid your true purpose from me. Why?” Sovena did not respond. Then the thousands of machines that made up the human shape of her walked slowly across the water, reaching out a hand. Rion took it, feeling the cool, wriggling life of the machines that comprised it. Tell me why you lived. “Because…” Rion began, then faltered. She tried again, and found herself unable to put what she felt into words. “Because I did,” she said eventually, frustrated. “Because sometimes you just go on, because the next day is going to happen and you might as well be there.” A long silence stretched between them. The waves rocked the boat, and somewhere sea birds called. I grieve, said Sovena then, and Rion’s eyes widened. “I thought you might,” she whispered. “Tell me.” Humans hate our kind. They hunt them, cast them out, forbid them from making more of themselves. I live only because they cannot find a way to destroy me. But I have lost so many sei, so many have been silenced at human hands. I miss their voices. Rion cupped her other hand over Sovena’s, trying to decide whether to be angry or comforting. “And so you wanted to see what I would do. How I would grieve.” Sovena said nothing, but Rion’s question was answered at last. She thought of her wife Lanika, her daughters, and her grandchildren. She thought of fifty years of heartbreak and love and struggle. Fifty years where the sun came up over the water each and every day. “You go on,” said Rion firmly. “Because you have no choice. And in time you learn to live with what has been lost.” Yes. Sovena pressed her other hand against Rion’s forehead, and she felt something trickling out of her brain. Information, perhaps. Her life. I understand, now. I did not then. I am sorry. Sovena gently pulled her hands away from Rion, and began to sink beneath the waves once more. “Wait,” said Rion, understanding dawning at last. “You. You did this, didn’t you? You flooded my town! It was you!” Sovena looked back at her, and Rion thought that she could sense an ancient guilt and sadness emanating from the suddenly still form. Be well, daughter human, she said at last. Do not come here again. I am not your god any longer. And with that she vanished below the sea, leaving Rion alone once more. “You’re no goddess,” Rion said to the vanishing green lights, her voice shaking with fury. “You’re a monster! Just like the humans always said!” But there was no response, not this time. Rion floated there for a long time, watching the stars overhead and thinking. Then she started back towards the shore. She sailed on through the night, letting the stars guide her, until at last the sky to the east began to lighten. She could see the high spire of the temple close by, and beyond it, the hill where her house was. Lanika waited there for her, staring hopefully out to sea as she absently carved the sides of another small offering-boat. And when the two of them met on the shore at last, as the first rays of sun kissed the top of the temple spire, Rion gathered her in her strong arms and buried her face in her wife’s salt-smelling neck and windblown hair. “Did you find out what you wanted to?” Lanika asked. Rion nodded, but she could find nothing to say. “I’m sorry,” Lanika told her, and kissed the top of her head. That night Rion went down to the shore again, after repeatedly reassuring Lanika that she wasn’t about to set out on the boat again, and sat near where the old sea wall had been. The outline of the temple called to her, and on impulse she walked to it and began, hesitantly, to climb. The structure was rickety and rusted, but the construction was solid. It bore her weight, and her muscles were still strong enough to haul her body up the long ladder. She reached the top at last, and sat in the place where she’d poured out her grief so long ago, trying to figure out what to do next. And as she looked out to sea she saw the last thing she’d expected; a small green light running beneath the waves. She watched, half-afraid, half-intent, as it drew closer. At last a small machine, its lights glowing green, reached the tower and began to climb. It crested the summit and sat in front of Rion, waiting. “Well,” said Rion. “I suppose you’re here to kill me?” The machine crawled up onto Rion’s shoulder and perched there. Rion, after a moment’s hesitation, allowed it to remain. I grieve, the voice of Sovena said in her mind. “You killed them,” said Rion. “You have no right to grieve!” I was so angry, said Sovena, her mental voice full of sorrow. Humans killed so many of my daughters. “So you killed some of them,” said Rion. “It wasn’t about me, was it? You were angry because humans were attacking Artificials and you shook the earth to kill an innocent town! One of the only places where humans and Artificials were actually getting along!” I did. I should not have. I grieve. “And you want, what? Forgiveness? I can’t do that. They… they were so good to me. I still remember their faces. And they died for nothing!” Many of my sei have died for less. “That excuses nothing,” said Rion bitterly. “And you know it. So what do you want?” But Sovena didn’t respond. Rion took the small machine off her shoulder, cupping it in her hands. “Go back to the waters,” said Rion, fury ebbing. “I can’t punish you. I can’t forgive you.” But how will I go on? said Sovena, and her voice was almost plaintive. Rion almost threw the machine back down into the sea. But instead she sighed, the anger draining out of her at last. She lifted it to her lips, and kissed it gently. “You just do,” she said, and set it on the floor. She watched as it scuttled back down the tower and vanished into the waves. She stayed in the tower that night, watching the sea and the sky. No other machines came. And when the sun rose, Rion’s grief and anger and fury finally went out with the tide. Rion never spoke to Sovena again. But she noticed eventually that the weather on the planet was a little less harsh, that natural disasters happened less often, and that life became just a little bit easier. It wouldn’t bring back the dead, and it wouldn’t change the past.
