From a coffee cart parked uneasily in a grocery parking lot, Travis and Dane Boersma grew Dutch Bros into a sprawling chain of 700-plus beverage restaurants. Before they got started in Grants Pass, Oregon, in 1992, Dane had never tried espresso, and neither brother knew how to make it. But with the help of nearby experts, they learned the craft—and even improvised their own recipes, like mocha made with chocolate milk from a local dairy. Eventually, Dutch Bros would go from pushcarts to drive-throughs, and from small-town Oregon to Wall Street—with a nearly $500-million IPO in 2021. Along the way, the brothers' special connection carried them through good times and bad, until an unexpected family tragedy shook the business to its core. This episode was produced by Alex Cheng, with music by Ramtin ArabloueiEdited by Neva Grant, with research help from Katherine Sypher.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Dutch Bros founder Travis Boersma wants to build a luxury dining and drinking facility with betting machines that would help make horse racing at Grants Pass Downs viable. Oregon's indigenous tribes say the state should deny approval of the “Historical Horse Racing” gambling terminals the Flying Lark would use. The HHR terminals are similar to slot machines that allow participants to bet on old horse races. We talk to Justin Martin, member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, about the HHR machines, the oversight of the Oregon Racing Commission and the way the state currently regulates gambling.
Travis Boersma helped start an iconic Oregon company, and the Dutch Bros cofounder is suddenly one of the state's wealthiest residents. But in recent months Boersma's other passion – horse racing – is suddenly at the center of a political drama. And Boersma is threatening to lay off more than 200 employees if his plans aren't approved in Salem. On the latest episode of Beat Check with The Oregonian, business reporters Jeff Manning and Mike Rogoway talked about Boersma's race track and gambling and restaurant center called the Flying Lark, why tribal governments see it as a huge threat to their casinos, how Dutch Bros is faring on the markets a few months after it went public and whether the race track controversy is a one off or the first indication of a new billionaire flexing his political muscle.Related:How Dutch Bros became an iconic Oregon company See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Dutch Bros franchise is a coffee chain established in 1992 by Travis Boersma and his late brother Dane, initially selling coffee around town from pushcarts. Their first franchise opened in Oregon in 2000, before expanding to 11 states today. The company aims to create a “massive difference, one cup at a time”, dedicated to giving back to the community through donations to various organizations including raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association to end ALS, in honor of the co-founder Dane who passed away due to ALS. In early 2021, co-founder Travis Boersma relinquished the CEO duties to Joth Ricci, and the company went public, trading in the New York Stock Exchange under the name “BROS” in September 2021. Early in the pandemic, many wondered whether the breakfast daypart and coffee segment would be left for dead after millions of Americans started working from home. Dutch Bros didn’t get that memo, though. In this interview with NRN editor in chief Sam Oches, Dutch Bros cofounder Travis Boersma and CEO Joth Ricci talk about how the brand evolved its daypart strategy, how its people culture helped overcome multiple crises in 2020, and why they aren’t worried about all of the competition flooding the drive-thru space.
