Laurel Ridge Community College is making waves with its comprehensive and in-demand healthcare programs. In a recent discussion hosted by Janet Michael on The Valley Today, attendees had the chance to hear from key members of the college faculty about the various career opportunities available through their health professions courses. Guy Curtis, the Director of Marketing at Laurel Ridge, opened the conversation by describing the versatility and rapid paths to meaningful healthcare careers offered by the college. Curtis noted the extensive range of programs including Fast Track and short-term courses aimed at equipping students for immediate employment in the healthcare sector. Professor Kate Gochenour highlighted the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program, which defies the traditional notion that healthcare careers are confined to roles involving direct patient interaction. The MLT program, she explained, trains students to perform crucial diagnostic testing, with a curriculum designed to accommodate various lifestyles through hybrid learning models. Dr. Rekha Parameswaran elaborated on the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program. With 28 years of experience, Dr. Parameswaran shared insights into the hands-on nature of the course, the diverse practice settings available post-graduation, and the importance of compassion and strong interpersonal skills in this field. Dr. Scott Vanderkooi, Dean of Health Professions, provided a behind-the-scenes look at the extensive support faculty receive to ensure student success. He emphasized the continuous growth and demand in healthcare fields, particularly within the Shenandoah Valley, and the diverse student base Laurel Ridge caters to, from recent high school graduates to adults seeking career changes. The conversation also touched on the significant role that various healthcare employers, like Blue Ridge Hospice and local hospitals, play in providing real-world experience to students through internships and clinical rotations. The commitment to community and high employment rates post-graduation reflect the program's success. Looking ahead, Laurel Ridge aims to keep pace with the evolving needs of the healthcare industry, ensuring their programs remain relevant and adapt to new demands. With the support of initiatives like G3 funding, many students can complete these rigorous programs without the burden of financial strain, making healthcare careers accessible to a broader audience. For those interested in joining these esteemed programs, Laurel Ridge provides numerous resources including advising sessions, dual enrollment for high school students, and information sessions such as the upcoming ones for the MLT program. Applications for the MLT program are due by May 1st, and the PTA program will start accepting applications from April 15th to May 15th.

Today on the podcast we are going to talk about Debunking the TOP 5 Weight Loss Myths Welcome to the Weight Loss for Women Over 40 podcast! I am your host Nikki T. I have been helping women lose weight since 2002! For about half of that time, using my background as a Personal Trainer and Physical Therapist Assistant, I gave fat-burning workout programs and nutritional meal plans and guidelines to my clients…and they got results! But what I have found is they haven't kept the weight off…after experimenting on myself 1st (I am my first client) I discovered the missing piece to keeping the weight off for good. It is in the mindset work. When clients come to me they get fast and effective workout plans. I teach them my one rule (which is super flexible) and they get food guidelines where no foods are off limits. But the most life-changing part of working with me is when we get together each week for virtual coaching THIS where we dive into the why behind what you are doing. Welcome to Real Work, Real Life where we talk to real people about what they do for work and what that means for their lives. Today I'm talking with Kat, a Physical Therapist Assistant. As you'll have more in a moment, you can get all the education you need from an Associates Degree program at a community college, graduating with little to no debt to start working in this field We also talk about a common theme that seems to happen in a lot of different careers, if you continue your education, you are eligible for much higher paying jobs, in this case as Doctor of Physical Therapy, but, if you had to pay for your education, you have to factor that cost into the potential difference in pay, as well as the lost earning years, particularly if you're making a change later in life, and probably most importantly, the difference in the actual tasks. Sometimes that level up in education may land you in a job that you like less and paid alot more for. Definitely a good reminder to try to talk a few people in a field before you dive in, just you give you ideas about which path you;re best suited to. We also touch on the many different roles at a rehab hospital and both the joys and challenges of working in geriatrics.

Coach Josh K, currently 29 years old, resides in the Des Moines, IA area but originally hails from Sioux City. Josh is a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant, employed in a skilled nursing/long-term care setting. During his upbringing, he struggled with obesity, adhering to the standard American diet until his early 20s, which led him to reach a weight of up to 330 lbs. Josh's health began deteriorating around the age of 20, experiencing symptoms such as sleep apnea, lightheadedness, dyspnea, anxiety, and low self-esteem. However, as he matured, he started making better choices, adopting a whole food diet. Despite successfully shedding excess weight, he discovered that not all his health issues improved. He continued to suffer from worsening thoracic spine arthritis pain, increased occurrences of low back nerve impingement and radicular pain, energy fluctuations, and gastrointestinal bloating and gas problems. Driven by a desire to find a solution, Josh initially turned to the ketogenic diet. Shortly after, he transitioned to a carnivorous diet, which proved to be transformative. With this dietary shift, he experienced minimal pain, a consistent and steady energy level, and relief from gas and bloating issues. Moreover, he noticed improved exercise performance and an increase in muscle mass, serving as additional benefits to his overall well-being. In this episode, I'm talking with Sally Aponte, who was finally on the road to recovery after diagnosing celiac disease. Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition where your body is not able to digest gluten, which is in so much of what we eat in the Western diet. Sally began a gluten-free diet and then later, a keto diet, and felt better for a while. But then, she started having a fresh set of health challenges to unravel. She ultimately discovered the cause behind it and has gone on to become an expert in this area. In this episode, we discuss… · How Sally finally linked digestive symptoms, hair loss, weakness, and skin issues to celiac disease · Why her symptoms and energy improved but then worsened again on a gluten-free diet and then a keto diet · The cause behind joint pain and new skin issues: oxalate toxicity · What oxalates are and some of the highest oxalate foods · Why a daily green smoothie may not be the healthiest option for everyone · The types of symptoms that might be linked to oxalate toxicity · How oxalates can contribute to kidney stones · The best type of testing for oxalate levels · Why it's important to detox from oxalates slowly · And how oxalate buildup is not just about what you eat Sally's experience inspired her to pursue alternative healing methods, which led her to become a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. Sally Aponte is both a Physical Therapist Assistant and an FDN coach. Her mission is to empower individuals who suffer from chronic digestive problems and oxalate toxicity by providing them with the right tools and lifestyle choices needed to live a healthy life, free from disease, and enjoy their golden years to the fullest. Welcome back to The Stoop Sessions where we have casual conversations about ministry on the Baltimore stoop. In each episode, Joel, Stephanie, and Eric talk through different topics and occasionally bring on a friend. In this episode, we bring on a friend! Stephanie and Eric invite Lisa LeGeorge to the stoop for a chat on evangelism. Lisa has traveled the globe and has a passion for unreached areas. Currently working at Children's Hunger Fund, she wants to see suffering children served through Gospel-centered local churches. The conversation begins with addressing the question of "overseas missions” versus “local evangelism.” Lisa argues that it's not an either/or but a both/and. She speaks on the benefits and limitations of para-church ministry and the need for the local church. Lisa gives tips from her own personal evangelism experience and shares how she turns random Sunday mornings at church into a new evangelistic opportunity. As both an academic and a practitioner, this episode hits on all things evangelism: from the para-church to the church; from the nations to the block; from the church's corporate witness to personal evangelism. Lisa LaGeorge serves as the senior director of CHF Academy at Children's Hunger Fund. She has previously served as a professor at The Master's University, where she met Stephanie. Stephanie Greer is a Gospel Worker funded through ONE HOPE serving with The Garden Church. Eric Hill serves as an elder at The Garden Church and is a Physical Therapist Assistant by day. Kristine earned her BS in Elementary Education in 1992, though never landing a formal classroom, life became her teacher. Not long after, she became a Certified Laughter Leader through The World Laughter Tour, and began helping others by leading therapeutic laughter groups while sharing the health benefits with friends, businesses, and clients. After earning another degree in 2012, she found herself working with elders as a Physical Therapist Assistant. She then went on to study Healing Touch, which is a continuing education program. Healing Touch is also an energy modality recognized by the American Holistic Nurses Association, and she is a trained Level 4 Practitioner. When a crisis arose in her life, Kristine learned about Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). Having personally experienced the effectiveness, she then studied to become an EFT Practitioner and has been sharing this tool with others. In 2019, she furthered her mind-body-spirit knowledge through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, becoming a Health Coach. She also became a student of Rapid Resolution Therapy in 2021. Continuing to develop these new skills to help others reframe, shift and release unbeneficial core beliefs, she now helps others become clear and free from lifelong struggles. As a lifelong learner, Kristine has taught downhill skiing, numerous exercise classes, and facilitated therapeutic rock painting for all ages. Mostly, she loves to incorporate laughter and play into teaching effective tools to others. She finds joy in guiding others to discover and clear troublesome patterns. Kristine helps identify tools that can relieve stress, release trauma, and reframe thinking. Tools that help you experience more inner peace. So you can shine! Living a life of service, she helps others move toward self-actualization, self-empowerment, and self-love. On this episode of the PTA Inspire series, Briana sits down with Bryonna Williams to discuss her journey towards becoming a PTA. Bryonna recently passed the NTPE in January 2023 on her 4th attempt! Here's a little bit about Bryonna: "My Journey of success began when I Graduated from Cheyney University, May of 2018 with a Bachelors in Biology. After graduation, I began to think of the career field I wanted to enter into and I knew a career path in Physical Therapy was what I desired most. In July of 2020, I enrolled into PIT and got accepted into there Physical Therapist Assistant Program. I successfully completed and graduated from the program in October of 2021. In January of 2022, I took my first attempt at the NPTE Exam, and unfortunately I did not pass. I was not immediately discouraged, because I had an idea of what to expect for the next time I took the test. I proceeded to take the test an additional two times and still did not pass. I became frustrated, I began to think that maybe I did not enter into the right field and I was making a mistake. That's when I came across Briana on Facebook and watched a few of her free videos. After watching her videos, I Immediately knew her coaching program was for me. Her videos are filled with lots of informative information such as tips and techniques on how to memorize different diagnoses. Briana's coaching program helped me build up my confidence so I can get back on track to pass the NPTE. As of January 2023 , I am now a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant and I have to thank Briana for her amazing coaching program. Thank you PTA Elevation, LLC for providing me with the support and for adding to my success." Bryonna Williams , PTA. Tune in to learn more! Susan, your host, welcomes Sarah Miller to today's episode. Sarah is a Royal Air Force veteran, turned Physical Therapist Assistant, turned Well-being Coach. She is currently in the process of setting up her own business, specifically coaching people who have unexpectedly lost a loved one and have been part of a traumatic experience. With a fierce passion, she states that her mission is to help people transform alongside adversity. Through her own experience and interaction with many others in support groups, Sarah has seen first-hand the devastating effect adversity has on a person's way of being, including their health. Whether during the initial crisis or many years beyond, she has repeatedly heard stories from people 10, 20, and 30 years beyond their adversity who continue to live in the shadow of their heart-breaking circumstances. This motivated Sarah to help them through their grief journey. Key Takeaways: Sarah shares her grief story that began when her daughter drowned. One day you wake up living your everyday life and end your day in a nightmare, we really don't know what comes next, there is no balance or “justice” that is granted. Making peace with your grief is the only effective way to move forward. Sarah shares how it was to live with self-blame and guilt. Sarah highlights the value of recognizing suffering and accepting that vulnerability is part of the human experience. Grief redefines your identity. Sarah talks about how her coaching role developed and became what it is today. Grief impacts all your body systems. It is so easy to neglect yourself when you are grieving. Stop and ask yourself: What do I need right now? Follow four criteria to give feedback: Is it true? Is it helpful? Is it necessary? (and the fourth: is it kind?) Being authentic with yourself is the first step to honoring your needs and accepting your grieving and all the feelings involved in the process. A mutual friend of ours introduced Elmer to me as a “Healer”. After this episode, I'd agree but also like to add “Giver”. What Elmer does for the community both on and off the water is simply amazing. Previously competing in the X-Games; Elmer now splits his time as a Physical Therapist Assistant and Backcountry Guide. The stories around Elmer's start in fly-fishing followed by what he believes to be his life's purpose is amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode and look forward to more conversations.
