Earned: Strategies and Success Stories From the Best in Beauty + Fashion

In Ep. 121 of Earned, Conor sits down with Chris Ruder, CEO of Spikeball—the world's largest supplier of roundnet equipment. To start, we dive into the background of Spikeball, which originally launched in 1989, before learning how Chris revived the name in 2004. With his original job being a sales position at Microsoft, Chris shares that he had no idea what steps to take, but that inspiration struck after seeing the game on a family vacation. Next, we explore the journey of building up to the re-launch, and how Chris was able to use his resources to create the product we know as Spikeball. Chris speaks to how he balanced running the Spikeball brand while simultaneously working his corporate job, and claims that the energizing work he did on Spikeball was what kept him going. We discuss what Chris loved about having the autonomy to build a consumer-forward brand, and how it led to feeling fulfilled in his career. By following the community of Spikeball players and monitoring what they're asking for, Chris empowered a group of avid-roundnet players into a loyal fanbase itching to participate in tournaments. We then learn how Spikeball has maintained its focus on its competitive community while also maintaining the balance of making “at-home players” feel valued. Between the way Spikeball motivates its customer service to treat players as friends, the ‘Spikeballer of the week newsletter,' and its social media strategy, Spikeball is always chasing the idea of being fully human. To close the show, Chris shares his own level of skill at the game, and how much he admires those who dedicate themselves to the craft.    In this episode, you will learn:  The importance of balancing engagement between niche communities and broader markets.  The power of humanizing your brand by blending humor and relatability to foster strong customer connections. The value of community investment and how Chris's distribution of free Spikeball sets led to both grassroots growth and brand loyalty. When Chris Ruder set out to revive a ball-and-net game from his childhood, he was pretty sure he would fail. He wasn't really into sports and had never run a business. But after 15 years, Spikeball has grown into a thriving brand with a global following. Spikeball is a two-on-two game where players hit a rubber ball onto a circular net. Invented in 1989, it never took off. But in 2003, when childhood friends dusted off a duct-taped set, Chris began daydreaming about bringing it back to life. For a few years, it was just a crazy idea, until Chris dug deeper and discovered it was never patented. Chris ran the business by himself for six years and discovered Spikeball was taking off with PE teachers and Christian youth groups. When he was offered a deal on Shark Tank, he turned it down because he didn't want Spikeball to be marketed as a toy, and instead focused on growing it as a competitive sport. Now, the game is popular around the world and its international governing body has Olympic ambitions. This episode was produced by Chris Maccini, with music by Ramtin Arablouei. Today on the podcast, I have the great privilege of speaking with the one and only, Ky Robinson. Ky competes for Stanford University, where he has slowly cemented himself as one of the top runners in the NCAA. Not only is Ky a force to be reckoned with in the NCAA, but Ky is also one of the top runners in his home country, Australia, having represented them at global championships, including the Eugune World Championships last summer, where he competed in the 5k. Just in the span of the short few months of indoor track, Ky has run 13:11 in the 5k, and 3:55 in the mile. Ky was also recently selected to represent his country Australia at the 2023 World XC Championships that will take place in Bathurst, Australia, this February 18. This discussion with Ky was an absolute blast. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, and am confident you will, too. Ky dives deep into running for Stanford University and all aspects of that experience, from the workouts to the culture to specific races. We also go into his upbringing in the sport in Australia and his decision to come over to the US for college. We also go into this upcoming year and his outlook on it, including the 2023 World XC Championships coming up next weekend. Lastly, Ky answers some listener questions, and we start to discuss the possibilities of a Spikeball dynasty in Palo Alto, this Fall. Needless to say, tune in! Summary: Welcome to another great episode of Startup Junkies! On this episode, hosts Caleb Talley, Jeff Amerine, and Victoria Dickerson sit down with Tim Swindle, a serial entrepreneur in the toy and game space and co-founder of Glacier Games. With his passion for outdoor sports, Tim teamed up with two others to create a new recreational game called PaddleSmash, which combines the best elements of Pickleball and Spikeball. Throughout the episode, Caleb, Jeff, Victoria, and Tim discuss how incorporating fun into your day is a necessity, building a business with Kickstarter, and how entrepreneurs should advertise their ideas, not safeguard them.     Show Notes: (0:55) Introduction to Tim (1:27) Tim's Origin Story (5:16) The Development of PaddleSmash (9:36) Tech vs Outdoor Sports (13:41) The Importance of Having Fun (17:33) Lessons Learned (22:49) Increasing Your Surface Area (26:01) The Kickstarter Experience (29:17) Social Media Strategy (32:34) Advice to Younger Self (33:11) Closing Questions   Links: Caleb Talley Jeff Amerine Victoria Dickerson Tim Swindle PaddleSmash   Quotes: “There's a resurgence to being low-tech right now. People spend so much time on their computers, laptops, iPads, and iPhones that you're seeing physical board games and outdoor games becoming more popular. We've become so digital with society that they provide this opportunity to get back to actually interacting with each other.” - Tim Swindle, (12:07) “That would be my biggest advice to entrepreneurs. Go out there, share your ideas, and talk to people. Don't worry about anybody stealing it, that's not going to happen. Get the real raw feedback as to whether or not you have something and can move forward.” - Tim Swindle, (25:01) “People think Kickstarter is where you start, but a lot of times these people have gathered interest and email addresses prior to launching, and they engage that community once they go. Then the Kickstarter algorithm says they're trending, and they start to show up everywhere. So focus on pre-marketing and building a community before you ever go live.” - Tim Swindle, (26:27)

Few things bring me more joy than seeing someone shoot their shot, and that's how today's episode came about. I got an email from Brandon Fong saying he loves the show and wants to kick it with me in the Diner and I just had to say yes. Brandon is the host of the podcast 7-figure Millennials and wise beyond his years (which sounds like an old-person thing to say… but, well, he is).  He shared so many nuggets, including a favorite quote by Carl Jung that I loved: “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will control your life and you'll call it fate.” We talked about business, personal growth, psychology, values, and more. He shared his strategy for goal setting and reflection that will have you reaching for your journal before the show is over.   About the Guest:  Brandon Fong is a husband to his highschool sweetheart, Leah, and is on a mission to create a more deeply connected world. While growing up on the government-provided “free lunch program” at school, Brandon realized that his most valuable resource wasn't money… it was his relationships. Here's a somewhat stuffy bio of me:   I am an author, professional speaker, coach, host, and entrepreneur. My first book, Leading Imperfectly: The value of being authentic for leaders, professionals, and human beings, is available wherever people buy books. I speak internationally to willing and unwilling attendees about authenticity, vulnerability, and leadership. My clients include American Express, General Electric (GE), Accenture, Yale University, The Ohio State University, and many others. As a speaker, I am doing the two things I loves the most: making people think and making people laugh!  I host my own events multiple times a year. They are 2-day events called Living Imperfectly Live (and sometimes they are 1-day virtual events). They are a space where humans from every walk of life can come together to be part of a community on the pursuit of badassery. The goal is to help attendees start living the life we say we want to live. Alas, you're here because of an idea I had a number of years ago and didn't think I was good enough to pull it off. I finally acted on it and alas Diner Talks with James was born! As you can see...

Chris Ruder is the founder and CEO of Spikeball. The funny thing about Spikeball is that it was invented by a different guy named Jeff Knurek in 1989. It was only in the market for a few years before quickly dying out. Chris was actually an early player of the game as a kid, saw its potential, decided to find the game as an adult, and turn it into a successful business.  https://okdork.com/podcast/246 Use this link to get 10% off at checkout on AppSumo: https://appsumo.com/?coupon=noah10&code=noah10
