August 9, 2026Having called believers to faithful obedience to God's Word, James concludes the chapter with three marks of authentic religion (James 1:26-27). We honor Christ's perfect, royal law by exercising self-control in our speech, showing compassionate care for the vulnerable, and pursuing a life of personal holiness. Where these qualities are absent, James warns that our religion is not merely weak; it is empty and worthless.James 1:26-27
John 17:23.2 “I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me.” Okay, can it get any more incredible and wonderful that this: That I am loved with the same love with which the Father loves His Son, Jesus? Let's not miss this great truth. He doesn't love us based on how we make Him feel. His love isn't a responsive or reactionary love. God chooses to love. His love is the sustained direction of His will toward the highest good of another no matter what the cost. His is a steadfast love. Unwavering. Unending. Unlimited. Undefiled. He always acted in His Son's best interest and highest good for His glory. That is the love that the world needs to see expressed in the church—Jesus' body. The world needs to see that the Father was abiding in the Son and the Son was abiding in the Father. How will they see that unity? They will see it as believers abide in Jesus and He abides in them and His love. That love is the love of the Father for Him and them. It will be seen as that love overcomes every possible threat that living in this world throws at them or between them. Our testimony in this dark world is this: Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, therefore, nothing can separate us from each other. We are living to love with Jesus. He lives! We love! Acknowledgment: Music from “Carried by the Father” by Eric Terlizzi. www.ericterlizzi.com
The sermon defines pure and undefiled religion by examining James 1:19-27, contrasting it with the modern cultural tendency to separate spirituality from organized faith. It emphasizes that true devotion requires listening humbly to God's word, resisting unrighteous anger, and actively applying biblical truths rather than remaining passive hearers. The text highlights that worthless religion deceives the heart through unchecked speech and a lack of practical obedience. Genuine piety is demonstrated by caring for orphans and widows in their affliction while maintaining personal holiness against worldly corruption. Ultimately, believers are called to integrate right belief, right action, and right affection into a holistic life of service and grace.

James 1:26-27 defines genuine, God-pleasing faith as active, not just theoretical. It states that true religion requires controlling one's speech, caring practically for the vulnerable (like orphans and widows), and living a morally pure life separate from corrupting worldly values.
Using 1 Peter 1:4 , Pastor Murphy will give us a portrait of the believer's eternal inheritance as an heir of God. This heavenly inheritance is:1) Incorruptible - does not decay2) Undefiled - free of contamination or marks of sin3) Fadeth not away - permanent4) Reserved in heaven - guaranteed
Blessed are the undefiled in the way, Who walk in the law of the LORD [NKJV]
The Scripture readings are Numbers 21:4-9; James 1:22-27; and John 16:23-33.Christianity is a religion, not a relationship. James teaches us that the only right religion gives us every true relationship with God and makes us joyful doers of His Word.

First Timothy 5:17–6:2 frames practical rules for church leadership, discipline, and daily godliness. Paul urges congregations to honor elders who lead and teach, treating faithful leaders as worthy of financial support and respect so they can sustain their families and continue preaching. The text demands that accusations against leaders rest on the testimony of two or three witnesses, not rumor, so the church can reconstruct events accurately and avoid unjust harm. When a leader persists in sin after measured private and group correction, public rebuke and removal follow to protect the congregation and press the seriousness of holiness. Instructions stress restoring repentant offenders in due time rather than excluding them forever or reinstating them too quickly; leaders must balance firmness with mercy and avoid partisan or emotional judgments.Paul emphasizes the gravity of these procedures by invoking God, Christ, and the angels, insisting that leaders administer discipline without bias and not lay hands on anyone hastily. The book also counsels care for personal health—an admonition for sensible self-care rather than a license for indulgence. A brief note on wine clarifies that occasional medicinal use served practical needs and does not justify habitual drunkenness. Finally, the epistle applies gospel ethics to daily work: slaves and employees must serve earthly masters with wholehearted effort, especially when masters belong to the faith, because faithful labor honors God and testifies to the transforming power of Christ. Consistent godly conduct in leadership, discipline, and workplace behavior produces confidence, truthful witness to the world, and the advancement of God's kingdom. These passages shape a church that protects integrity, restores sinners, cares for its ministers, and models gospel-hearted service in ordinary life.

The sermon emphasizes that true religion is demonstrated not through mere knowledge or belief, but through practical action rooted in faith. It highlights the importance of visiting the fatherless and widows, and keeping oneself unspotted from the world as tangible expressions of love for both God and neighbor. The message cautions against self-deception and underscores that genuine faith inevitably leads to a life of service and separation from worldly influences, ultimately revealing a life of covenant fellowship with God. 1. Jesus wants to free us from false and external forms of justification that keep us from a genuine repentance and true purity and healing. In this passage, Jesus makes it clear that we should not substitute traditions and outward behaviors to keep us moral and pure. Instead, let's allow the Lord to expose broken ways of living and thinking that keep our hearts defiled and in bondage, that we might come to Him for true purity of heart.

McKnight Crossings Church guest preacher and A.C.T.S. Ministers, Katie & Trevor Holloway, ask us to consider the word “religion” and the practices that surround that ideas of that word. We are challenged to consider how Jesus Christ described the idea of a religion that focuses on God, and how we live in comparison; what is our focus and with whom is our heart?
