If you are a regular listener to this show, you probably make plans for a living. Ever feel like the job stalls out in Google Slides? Like, you work on the thinking but seeing it take flight is never quite right? Aric Wood of XPLANE gets strategies airborne for a living. He wrote a book, called The Strategy Activation Playbook, which Adam dug so much while preparing for this conversation, that he read it a second time. This conversation covers the how and why of this book, which will seem pretty clear, but the level of detail in the book, and Aric's insightful description is intriguing. Like Adam's first book, Under Think It, its meant to be a desk reference, flipped open whenever a strategist gets stuck. How much do you really understand why you’re work is successful? Do you really know what works and what doesn’t? What if all the knowledge you had was somehow trapped in your mind because you hadn’t figured out how to communicate about it. When I was learning to lead strategy teams, I wrote Under Think It. It was as much a document about how to share the information I had as it was about the information itself. Working directly with small and independent companies, I realized how much of a gap there is in the language used by big brands and small companies. I wanted to figure out how to document the work, so small businesses could more easily benefit. Starting this work, I ended up creating an online course for small businesses who have been shut out of brand building. The course, based on Specific, is available now. This first version is for small businesses with physical locations or providing a person-to-person service to customers - not ecommerce. I’ll be adding that in future editions. If you’re a listener, or if a listener clever enough to copy/paste a link, you can save 15% off the cost of the course. I spoke with Nick Childs, who is also helping people better tell their story. He’s a lifelong creative and leader putting together ads and communications on the biggest stages. He’s pretty much seen it all. Now he’s started DIRT, a new method for better understanding what works about creative so we can get better at telling stories and driving results (if that’s your thing). I am always interested in new possibilities created by research, so I geeked out a little. FYI, I’ll be following up for more info on DIRT for my own projects. Want the transcript? Not quite depressed. Not quite happy. Not quite anxious. Not quite relieved, or disappointed. This year has been a lot. I've experienced an entire lifetime of lows and (relative) highs since March. We spend a lot of time thinking about things, and thinking about what we're thinking. We slightly less able to nail down how we're feeling. If you journal (I do not, don't judge me) you might be able to track your feelings and tie them to behaviors. "Aha! I felt this way when I ate a whole pizza and entire pint of ice cream." We sure do track a lot of our activity these days. Our steps, our calories, our productivity. But our moods, less so. Understanding what drove a mood, though I have some suspicions, might lead to changes in behavior, or the ability to pre-empt it. I doubt I would have the discipline to do anything about feeling anxious after binge watching 24-hours of horror movies and cable news. I'm sure you'll agree it is unavoidable. At times, I've thought I was protecting myself if someone asked how I was doing and I held back. Preventing the awkward reveal of some vulnerability. But these days, I wonder if I could even answer truthfully from minute to minute.I was very interested in recent research done by Nonfiction Research tracking emotion of a large population: Spotify users. Ingeniously, they used the titles of playlists as indications of a mood or sum of moods and went about an analysis of the people who created those playlists, or others like them, and what they were feeling. The strategies used back then may as well be locked inside a time capsule and tossed into the sea. The world has changed. And, the way brands use social media to engage with their audiences has changed. Nobody knows this better than Adam Pierno, who understands how to build brands by finding what is meaningful to their target audiences. Brands can learn more about their ‘best customer’ from observing pop culture than staring blankly at a soulless growth chart. And, when you’re America’s largest university, knowing how to integrate brand components to create a consistent persona across all your social channels is vital. A mistake that many brands continue to make is when they try to become a student of the platform or a student of the tools. As Adam teaches in his new book, ‘Specific’, you’ve got to become a student of the audience. In this episode, Adam reveals how you can do just that and reach out to your audience in a way that feels personal and specific to what they care about on social media today. He will then keep around 100 slides in the appendix so that if the client wants to know the specifics about research or analytics he can explain further. It is all about the making the best use of time. Editing presentations is a skill that many marketers need to work on. (27:13) - How do you walk a client through strategies? Every client is different. Adam wants his strategy presentations to act as a conversation. He wants clients to ask questions and give opinions so they can build a strong foundation. This foundation will make the rest of the process much easier and efficient. Adam also recommends making the information relatable and understandable for the client. One technique he uses is to create mock target audience with backgrounds so the client can personify its target. (34:35) - Why should people care about your book and strategy? There are no textbooks available that can teach strategy. Adam asked many of his associates whom are in the strategy department on how to teach strategy but nobody could give an answer. He wrote ‘Under Think It’ to act as a guidebook to give steps on how to develop a strategy. ADDITIONAL NOTES Adam’s book that is referenced throughout this episode is called ‘Under Think It’. The book acts as a guide book for creating strategies with real-world examples and compelling insights. It is available through amazon here. This week on “Marketing Today,” Alan talks with Adam Pierno, chief strategy officer at Santy and the author of “Under Think It.” Pierno is a living, breathing example of invention and reinvention. He started on the creative side of advertising — where he was an art director and, ultimately, a creative director — before making the leap to strategy. And, when faced with a paucity of solid, comprehensive training materials for his strategy team at Santy, he wrote a book to fill the void. In discussing his approach with the book, Pierno talks about his decision to steer away from what he calls the “jargonization of strategy” in an effort to communicate ideas powerfully and effectively. “Don’t use jargon. Use little words,” Pierno says. “People can get their heads around them. People can pick them up and do something else with them on their own…it sets people free. And that’s really what ‘Under Think It’ is all about, is how to give people your idea in a way that they can do something with it.” Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today” podcast include: Pierno’s path from creative to strategy: A little bit of luck and a little bit of weird left turns. (1:20) Pierno discusses the inspiration for his book, the ground it covers, and the research behind it. (5:35) PowerPoint as a strategy tool: It doesn’t work; you have to give people something they can use. (18:47) Beware the silos: Strategy is best when it’s woven through the fabric of an agency. (21:16) How strategists should think about media. (24:20) A tip for strategists: Express your hidden artist. (27:35) For Pierno, seeing his dad change jobs — and thrive — made him realize that there are second acts in life. (28:49) Pierno: “Brand awareness is going to make a big comeback.” (33:38) Support the show.

In 2017 I listened and learned. I’ve been listening all year to clients, prospects, thought leaders, innovators, risk takers, authors, speakers, top performers and simply amazing people.  And from them I learned. I learned.. people truly want to learn how to connect; that ‘mattering’ is as important as food, water and shelter; that difference makers need to be edgy and awesome. I learned.. killing squirrels, figuratively, is a good thing in business; you need to be strategic about everything you do and sometimes UNDER THINK IT; you CAN start from the mailroom and make it all the way to the top. I learned... companies need connecting cultures to truly thrive; the power of magic words; that Pickle Ball is a real thing; that Nice Guys DO finish First! I learned... everyday for a start-up CEO is either a 1 or a 10; you need to be willing to eat anything; you can gain confidence over coffee and great ideas can spurn from having too much of it. I learned... Love is the #1 motivator and you need to foster your passion. I learned... once in awhile you meet someone that changes your perspective; however, once in a lifetime you connect with someone who changes your heart. I learned... How important it is to just “Say Yes!”, follow your dreams, and Remember Tomorrow! Lastly, I learned that Thrive LOUD is more than just a podcast show, social media handle, or a hashtag - it’s the way to live each and every day! *** Happy New Year and may 2018 bring you everything you want and more!
