This week's guest is Chris Riccobono, Founder & Executive Chairman of disruptive retail brand UNTUCKit. UNTUCKit was one of the first digitally-native brands to embrace brick-and-mortar as critical to it's long-term success. He also shares the power of a big, simple idea well executed and outlines how he plans to take UNTUCKit to the next level through store expansion, partnerships, and international growth. As usual we open by dissecting the most important news of the week including take-aways from the NRF/CNBS monthly sales report and solid earnings reports from Warby Parker, which suggests that "wobbly unicorns" can find their footing, and Simon Property Group, which demonstrates that certain types of malls are far from dead. Chris was a winner of the Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2018 Award in New York and in his spare time he works closely with the Cancer Center at Atlantic Health System in New Jersey.Chris currently lives in New Jersey with his wife and children.Untuckit's Origin and Chris Riccobono's Journey: Chris Riccobono, the co-founder of Untuckit, started the company with the idea of creating a shirt designed to be worn untucked, addressing a common problem in men's fashion. The concept emerged from Chris's frustration with traditional shirts being too long, and he decided to venture into the fashion industry despite having no prior experience in the field.Struggles and Early Challenges: Untuckit faced initial challenges, including the difficulty of finding the right shirt length and manufacturing issues. They encountered setbacks like shirts shrinking and buttons unraveling. Chris and his partner struggled to make a quality product and initially had limited resources, raising a modest amount of money to launch the brand.Marketing Strategies and Growth: Untuckit adopted unconventional marketing strategies, such as radio ads and airline ads, to promote their unique product. The tagline "shirts designed to be worn untucked" resonated well with the audience. Despite the slow initial growth, Untuckit's brand strength and customer satisfaction led to significant success, with a focus on brick-and-mortar stores alongside online presence.Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic: The podcast covers the unexpected challenges Untuckit faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The company went from a position of rapid growth to considering bankruptcy within a few months. Chris highlights the importance of resilience and adaptability in overcoming the challenges posed by the pandemic, which significantly impacted the fashion industry.Current and Future Plans: Despite the challenges, Untuckit managed to survive and adapt. Chris discusses their recovery strategy, including negotiating with landlords and factories, raising debt, and ultimately becoming profitable again. Untuckit is optimistic about the future, planning to open 20-25 stores, exploring international markets, and diversifying into wholesale. The company aims to continue its growth trajectory and capitalize on its brand strength.Efficient Store Strategy: Chris emphasizes the importance of efficient store design and operations. He prefers stores in the range of 1,200 to 1,500 square feet, with a focus on cost-effective buildouts. The goal is to provide a productive and efficient shopping experience.Move Away from Large, Expensive Stores: Chris challenges the traditional approach of large, aesthetically pleasing stores, citing the inefficiency and high costs associated with them. He believes in smaller, more cost-effective stores that prioritize customer experience and efficiency.Acquiring Customers Through Stores: Chris sees brick-and-mortar stores as crucial for acquiring customers and marketing. He views them as billboards and advocates for cost-effective store openings, even if they generate less revenue per store.Brand Ambassadors for Credibility: Discussing marketing strategies, Chris highlights the use of brand ambassadors for credibility, even though he acknowledges the challenges in directly measuring their impact. He mentions having ambassadors like Drew Brees and Wayne Gretzky, who were also investors in the brand.Importance of Brick-and-Mortar Despite E-commerce: Contrary to the belief that brick-and-mortar retail is diminishing, Chris argues that it remains an essential and enduring part of the shopping experience for the majority of people. He believes in thecontinued importance of physical stores for various activities and social interactions.Changes in Raising Capital: Chris mentions that the landscape for raising capital has changed, especially post-COVID. Investors are now more cautious and won't engage unless a company is profitable. The era of overvaluing companies without profitability seems to be over, and investors are looking for sustainable business models.Challenges for New Companies: According to Chris, it's currently challenging for new companies, especially pre-revenue ones, to raise money. The competitive environment and caution among investors make it difficult for new brands to secure funding. He emphasizes the importance of having a strong brand and being cautious with spending.Lessons Learned and Advice: Chris reflects on lessons learned from his entrepreneurial journey. He advises being more relaxed and enjoying the challenges. Additionally, he stresses the importance of discipline in spending, citing examples from Untuck It where they were frugal and avoided overspending. Chris also highlights the significance of preserving capital and finding ways to hang around, emphasizing the long-term game for success.
Succeeding in such a saturated and competitive industry requires more than just a good product; it needs a compelling story that resonates with consumers. Chris Riccobono's journey to success has been marked by tenacity and the ability to spot opportunities where others might see challenges. He is never content with merely following the beaten path; instead, he thrives on disruption and change. Chris Riccobono, a dynamic entrepreneur and visionary, has embarked on a remarkable journey from his humble upbringing to becoming a successful figure in the world of fashion and entrepreneurship. Hailing from a background that values hard work and determination, Chris has always been driven by a relentless pursuit of greatness. His path to success took shape with the birth of "Untuckit," a brand that revolutionized men's fashion by introducing shirts designed to be worn untucked. His drive to stand out in a crowded market led him to emphasize quality and the power of storytelling in marketing. Chris knew a compelling brand narrative was essential for capturing consumers' attention. Despite the highs, there were inevitable lows, from quality control issues to adapting to the changing retail landscape. Chris recounts these setbacks candidly, viewing them as the essential building blocks that make the moments of triumph so rewarding. He also touches on the vital topic of consumer experience, emphasizing that consistent quality is the key to a successful brand, especially in an era where online shopping has become the norm. Chris's commitment to quality was unwavering. He conducted extensive research, comparing the products of major athletic brands and athleisure companies. His findings confirmed what he already suspected—the industry lacked high-end, proper athletic apparel that offered both performance and aesthetics. With a name that raised eyebrows and piqued curiosity, "Greatness Wins" was born. This brand sought to fill the athletic apparel industry gap by focusing on high-quality, performance-driven products that combined style with functionality. Riccobono's choice of brand name, rather than conforming to conventional norms, reflected his desire to make a statement and spark intrigue. He knew this brand had to have a meaning beyond its products—a message resonating with the youth and anyone seeking greatness in their lives. Despite the hardships and the daunting prospect of starting a new business during a global pandemic, Riccobono's passion and pursuit of greatness never wavered. He embraced the inevitable struggles of entrepreneurship, knowing that they would ultimately make his success all the more rewarding. In this episode, we podcast after a rare date night and cocktails. We get straight to the point - we need a new podcast name! We recount our very different morning routines and Nick's weekend away. Find out who caught whom listening to "B*&ch Money Fame" and what gifts Nick got for his birthday - one hint, a new plaid button-down shirt from Untuckit! We talk friendship bracelets for each other and the fact that nobody's paying attention. Libby wonders why she's so awkward with Nick when seeing him at work and why others kissing is too much to handle! We round out our conversation on the glory of hanging up the phone on each other when we were dating and the Golden Bachelor.
Untuckit was born when Chris Riccobono couldn't find a shirt that looked good when he wore it untucked. Riccobono founded the American casual men's apparel company in 2010; today the brand is about to sell its 12 millionth shirt. Now Riccobono has launched a new venture: Greatness Wins was created as a response to Riccobono's dissatisfaction with athletic and performance wear. Chris joins us to talk about his entrepreneurial background, the growth strategies for his two brands, the importance of stores and his advice for young entrepreneurs and retailers. Though Chris Riccobono didn't have any fashion experience when he launched menswear brand Untuckit, he managed to solve a problem in the business casual space. The company's dress shirts designed to be worn untucked have been copied by a plethora of competitors and fueled its profitable business. Since entering the market 2011, the NYC-based DTC brand has seen its fair share of highs and lows: Prior to the start of the pandemic, Untuckit had expanded to 90 retail locations around the world, including six in Canada and a new store in England. But subsequent lockdowns forced Riccobono to temporarily close all locations. "There wasn't one time during the pandemic that we gave in and said, 'I wish we didn't open these stores.' We stood behind them," Riccobono said on the latest episode of the Glossy Podcast. "You can't operate a massive growing men's retail business without having stores." The slight setback didn't stop Untuckit's growth. Once the quarantine and guidelines lifted, and consumers began feeling comfortable in public spaces again, Untuckit sales ramped up. In 2021, Untuckit opened three new locations, including in Long Beach, California, Sarasota, Florida and Manchester, U.K. Now, Riccobono is expanding his portfolio. In June, along with Derek Jeter, Misty Copeland and Wayne Gretzky, he introduced an all-new brand, Greatness Wins. It's centered on performance athletic apparel.
I always find it fascinating talking with veterans about the transition from the command and control structure of the military to the leadership and cultural conventions of the civilian world. We know that veterans can be some of the most inspiring and effective leaders in the workplace, but that's no accident. It takes time to transition, assisted by personal development, mentoring, coaching. All designed to find that true, authentic leader that can bring their best self to the workplace. My guest on this episode of The Unlock Moment is a deep expert in unlocking the potential in veterans. After graduating from the University of San Francisco, Kevin Sullivan, Lieutenant Colonel US Army (retired) served 20 years as an aviation officer with the United States Army. Throughout his military career as a Blackhawk pilot, Kevin served in numerous leadership positions, culminating with service as the Director of Aviation for the US Army Pacific Command. He is a proven leader with over 30 years of senior leadership, international business development and marketing experience. He's worked in many sectors, including significant work supporting veterans, and is the Founder and President of Leading Points Corporation, a company that builds and implements comprehensive military programs for businesses interested in establishing themselves within the military and government markets. He's launched military programs for companies as diverse as CostCo, Golf Channel, Vail Resorts, Untuckit and many more. And now as we move into a new era where coaching is becoming available in the palm of your hand, Kevin and his team are working together with me and my colleagues at pioneering digital coach company KultraLab on a fascinating idea to support hundreds of thousands of veterans across the US using the power of digital coaching. We'll come to that later in the conversation.I'm keen to learn more about Kevin's own experience of the military to civilian transition, and the Unlock Moments of remarkable clarity that helped him to figure out the path ahead. I'm also hoping to learn more about what drives his passion to continue to serve veterans and his vision for the future.--Leading Points Corporation: http://www.leadingpoints.com/KultraLab: https://kultralab.com/

With over 12K retail locations closing in 2020, leaving 159M square feet of retail space unoccupied, many might be thinking that the future of brick and mortar retail locations is permanently on the decline. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, retailers opened more stores than they closed in 2021, “with a nearly 40 percent increase in year-over-year store opening announcements” (AZ Big Media). Retail Refined host Melissa Gonzalez, spoke withBrent Paulsen, Managing Director and Head of Retail at UNTUCKit about the company's brick and mortar store strategy, the future of retail, and how data analytics can be utilized to drive decisions and increase profitability.Paulsen has spent 30 years working in retail store operations for multiple companies including Bloomingdales, Home Depot, Sears, Montgomery Ward, and Lord & Taylor. His breadth of experience in brick-and-mortar operations made him a perfect fit to join UNTUCKit in 2015 when the company was looking to expand its store presence. At the time, the company had two locations. Since joining the company, Paulsen has been part of the company's rapid growth leading to the addition of 86 stores in the U.S., Canada, and the UK as of June 2022.For those who are not familiar with the brand, UNTUCKit is casual apparel that is designed to be worn at work with the ability to successfully transition to life after the workday is done. “Our tag line, ‘Shirts Designed to be Worn Untucked,' is how we differentiate ourselves from other retailers… our job is to really get people into a product that fits them. A shirt that is designed to fit well that is not a custom product is our market niche,” said Paulson. In discussing the company's brick and mortar strategy, Paulson noted that “we are definitely believers that the role of a store is important to a brand. So UNTUCKit was initially a direct-to-consumer brand, DTC brand, we positioned our first store after opening a popup in New York in the Fall of 2015. The customer response to being able to see and feel and touch and try on our product was exceptional.”Online sales data helped determine where to open stores based on where the product was already selling well. This helped build credibility for the brand while increasing online and in-person sales. And it helps defray the costs of traditional advertising such as TV, radio, and social media – the cost of introducing a customer to the brand through a physical store can be very cost-effective compared to other advertising methods.

There really aren’t a lot of ways to reinvent a woven shirt. Somehow in 1999 Steven Alan found a way to do it. That was the year he created the Reverse Seam which would go on to sell tens of thousands of shirts. The innovation? To twist the placket and to reveal the outseam. It’s more than that though, Steven flipped the dress shirt to be a deliberately casual button-down. It’s not complicated, but the Reverse Seam was a important reinterpretation. It’s like going back in time two decades and popularizing the entire ridiculous idea for Untuckit. Only these shirts were for people who don’t hate themselves. (Sorry, I had to do it.) In all seriousness, a casual woven shirt was a great idea and that’s why Steven has sold so many of them and why Amy Larocca called it the perfect shirt, which I think sums things up fairly well. My opinion is that Steven Alan is a legend. I’ve always loved his point of view and his Annex shop in Tribeca was my favorite shop in New York. His product was great, he brought in amazing brands from all over the world and there was always something great to discover. I mostly wear his other woven shirt, the Single Needle, since it’s a bit roomier and we collaborated to make some flap-pocket shirts way back when. They sold out in like 38 minutes. It was a bit of a dream collab for me because I love Steven’s general aesthetic. Over the years Steven expanded the business to a point that became difficult to manage in a changing world. As wholesale and physical retail evolved Steven had to close all of his stores and the financial situation took him to the brink. He made some tough decisions to extract the company from the store leases and eventually he was able to recommit to a completely online only direct-to-consumer brand and web shop. When the brand relaunched online Steven started making shirts in the garment center again and the Reverse Seam and the Single Needle have been resurrected. In a way the business has come full circle and Steven himself seems reinvigorated with the simplicity of it all. I’ve missed shopping at the Annex and seeing Steven in New York and was curious about the evolution of the brand. I reached out to Steven a little while back and we recorded a sort of impromptu podcast. Through our conversation we chart the early days of his stores and how Steven Alan has evolved through the years. Steven has had a huge impact of so much of what we see today. His brand is as relevant as ever, especially now that the Reverse Seam is back. Hope you enjoy our conversation. The ACL Podcast is more of an add-on to the newsletter than a full fledged podcast.
