Our special guest today has a very unique story. Vanessa Johnson, one of Abundant Life's Fusion volunteers shares with us her childhood in New Orleans in the 1960s, and how close to home the American Civil Rights Movement was, being that her own cousin, Gail Etienne, was one of the “New Orleans Four”. Vanessa describes her childhood as a good one, being close with her big family, having friends, black and white, in the neighborhood to play with, not yet seeing the intense racial divide that the country was still going through. Her family protected her against a lot of the evil surrounding her, but as she went to public school, she watched as her close friend down the block went to a much nicer school. Vanessa's school was low quality, physically and educationally. It was like this, segregated and unequal, even though laws had changed, people's hearts were still so hardened. Her cousin Gail Etienne had been selected to join an integration movement in the public schools, at only six years old! Having Gail, along with only three other black children, enter McDonogh school, a predominantly white school, the white families began taking their children out of school, and even moving away. The white population dropped by 70%. At school, Gail was abused, spit on and beat with a baseball bat. Even by high school, these schools were more integrated, but unfortunately every day there would be racially motivated fights. Today we see a lot of people turning from God, and a lot of racial divide. As Christians, we are all brothers and sisters in Christ, it doesn't matter what is on the outside, Jesus unites us with His spirit. He is the answer. https://livingproof.co https://www.nola.com/news/education/article_d507518c-839c-11ec-8d00-ff3a062a1d6a.html

As you'll hear from Vanessa's accent – she's not a kiwi - she left her family and friends in Canada to come to New Zealand 8 years ago to fulfil her dreams of studying in NZ to become a veterinarian … she's lived here ever since!Vanessa is a recent Massey University graduate with 3 years experience who works in a busy South Auckland practice as their fulltime companion animal veterinarian. When she's not working, she keeps active at the gym, and enjoys learning Japanese and water-colour painting. Dr. Vanessa's partner is a nurse who's about to undertake the daunting challenge of med school this month.  Vanessa believes having a great support network and forming good mental health habits is instrumental to success.Today we're going to learn of some of the good mental habits Vanessa has formed and the benefits she's noticed from having them as part of her life.  She shares what she does when she notices thoughts of Imposter Syndrome, negativity and the importance of keeping a Gratitude Journal as a part of her every day life.Vanessa Johnson is very candid, vulnerable and honest about life for her as a veterinarian through 2020 and into January 2021.    Here are my six takeaways from this chat with Vanessa – I'm really interested to hear what was most significant for you and what particularly struck a chord in your life which you might adopt.1.       Exercise – design your own version of a Stomp Around the Block as your way of decompressing at the end of each day.   2.       Find someone to share the ups and the downs of your day – every day.   Clear the cache of your mind each day so you don't bet bogged down in the ikky stuff.3.       Look for the good every day – attitude of gratitude journal.   Like Vanessa said:  some people have to watch what they eat, others have to watch what they think.  I have to watch both!4.       Stay tuned to the thoughts going through your head – reset your brain when you start to hear Imposter-Syndrome type self-chatter going on.  5.       Get away from the clinic at lunchtime – get some fresh air so you can mini-recharge during the day.   Plug in your earbuds, tune into a podcast and go get some fresh air.  It really will energise you for the rest of the day.6.       Distance yourself from customer complaints by sharing them around your team. Think about having a practice that people in your team don't try to “defend” their own customer complaints.  Like Vanessa said, it allows people to distance themselves away from the heat of the moment.  Do you have any of these strategies in your life and/or clinic?  Do you have variations on these?  If you do, I'm sure other listeners will be interested to hear what they are, so please feel free to comment or send me an email – julie@vetstaff.co.nz.VetStaff leading veterinary sector recruitment in New Zealand | veterinarians | locums | nurses

Now bedtime is all over the place and we're in and out of her room doing a dog and pony show just to get her to lay down and chill for a few hours. Vanessa Johnson has always had a strong love and passion for those who are hurting. Thrive2Heal is a ministry that was founded to help those who are struggling to overcome the pain and devastation of past traumas in their lives. Vanessa knows firsthand how trauma can become a destructive force in your life without healing and restoration taking place. She was raped as a small child then suffered periods of molestation at the hands of an uncle. She experienced a great deal of fog, anger, disappointment and shame over what happened to her. Vanessa believes that God healed and restored her - that in his infinite wisdom, used others to help navigate her to her divine destiny and purpose. The trauma of abuse did not destroy her - it fueled a fire and desire to help others. As a result she gave birth to a ministry of healing and wrote the powerful book, Thrive, A Call to Healing. In Thrive, A Call to Healing she guides and challenges the reader to take the necessary steps to not only heal, but to know that a supreme force has given them the power to manifest it for themselves. Vanessa Johnson is an author, Life Coach, Speaker and a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors. She is living testimony that destiny will not truly be fulfilled until we release the pains of our past and stop allowing them to define our future.
