The theme this week on the One Minute Retirement Tip podcast is: Ask me anything! I'm answering your listener-submitted questions about what is weighing most on your mind as you prepare for retirement. Today, I'm answering the following question: How do I know if I have enough money to retire? Lucy writes: How do I know if I have enough money to retire? I know this is super generic and maybe you have a worksheet I could fill out to determine this? I am 62 and my husband is almost 65 and already retired. He has a pension and very small retirement savings, so I feel I have to make up for it as I would like to maintain our lifestyle. There's a lot to address in this question from Lucy. When Lucy says she is trying to “make up for it”, I assume that's in her own savings through a 401k or some other retirement plan. Answering the question of if you have enough comes down to a few factors, but the most important is your spending in retirement. Is that going to be covered by your assets and income sources after you account for taxes and inflation? You also need to consider the age you retire, how your portfolio is invested, and a few other factors, but spending in retirement must be sustainable. I've seen people retire comfortably with $100,000 in assets, and I've seen people who needed well in excess of $1,000,000 to have everything pencil out, and the difference comes down to lifestyle and spending in retirement. Lucy asked if there was a worksheet that she could use to determine this. I do have a tool that you can use to give you a more concrete answer. It's called the Retirement Success Forecaster. Using data from a simple questionnaire, I'll be able to tell you if you're on track for retirement, and if you're not where you need to be, I'll tell you what adjustments you can make today to live the retirement you envision. Getting a customized retirement forecast is easy. Just go to www.truenorthra.com/retirementsuccess/ to download your forecaster questionnaire. Fill it out, send it back to me using the instructions in the forecaster, and I'll send your personalized results for free - no strings attached. That's it for today. Thanks for listening! She references Frodo’s return to the Shire in Lord of the Rings, where Bilbo tells him, “You can never go home again.” As fate would have it, Lucy’s business partners reached out to her with plans for expansion into the U.S., leading her down a new path in Silicon valley.Listen in as Lucy discusses her transition to the U.S., the differences in doing business between the two countries, best practices for building your network and nurturing business relationships, why you need to start making more phone calls today, how to evolve from recruiter to trusted advisor, and how a traumatic motorcycle accident completely changed Lucy’s trajectory in life. Lucy smiled as she shook the coins out of her piggy bank. There's more here than I remembered! she thought. I can put a little extra in the offering at church this week and use the rest to buy some candy, she decided happily. When Lucy arrived at her Sunday school class, she sat with her friend Mary. As their teacher began passing the offering plate, Mary took some money out of her pocket and showed it to Lucy. "My aunt gave me a nice big check for my birthday," Mary told her, "and I'm going to put some of it in the offering." Lucy noticed it was a lot more than she planned to give. "How about you, Lucy?" asked Mary. "How much did you bring?" Lucy blushed. What she planned to give didn't seem like much anymore. But she had brought all her money along, including what she intended to use for herself. She showed it to Mary, and when the plate came around, she reluctantly dropped it all in. On the way home from church, Lucy sat quietly in the back seat. "Why such a sad face, honey?" asked Mom. Lucy sighed and explained what had happened in her Sunday school class. "I don't get it," she said. "I gave more than I planned to give, so I should feel good about it, right?" "Not necessarily," said Mom. "The money you planned to give was of your own free will--a love gift to God. The extra money was given to impress your friend. You gave it for the wrong reason--to make yourself look better to someone else, not out of gratitude for everything Jesus has done for you." Lucy sighed. "My reason for giving all of it wasn't right, but God will still use it, won't He?" "Of course He will," Dad replied. "When we give something for the wrong reason, we can confess it to Jesus and know He will make it right." Dad smiled at her in the rearview mirror. "In the future, decide what you believe Jesus wants you to give and stick with that. Don't discuss it with your friends. Keep it between you and the Lord. Then joyfully give it to be used for His glory." Sherry L. Kuyt How About You? Do you give some of your own money to the Lord each week at church? That's good, but remember to give for the right reason. The Bible tells us to give generously out of gratitude for all God has given us--never to impress other people. Pray about how much you should give, and perhaps talk to your parents about it too. Then give with a cheerful, willing heart out of thankfulness for everything Jesus has done for you. Today's Key Verse: God loves a cheerful giver. (NKJV) (2 Corinthians 9:7) Today's Key Thought: Give willingly
When “Lucy” was discovered, it was widely touted as a “missing link”. According to Evolution, the human species evolved from an ape-like ancestor about 6 million years ago. Lucy’s discovery was evidence that the evolutionary ape-to-man theory is scientifically correct. However, the validity of this missing link is now in question. Many other so-called missing links are also questionable or have been outright debunked. So are there any real missing links? Today on Educate For Life, Kevin is talking with Christopher Rupe who co-authored the book “Contested Bones”. Chris Rupe is a biologist and graduated from SUNY Geneseo in 2009. Since 2011 Chris has been a Research Associate at FMS Foundation. Chris has researched a broad range of biological topics—ranging from the origin of life, to bacterial evolution, to whale evolution, to the famous riddle of “Haldane’s Dilemma.” Chris has published numerous articles on these topics. For the last 5 years, Chris has been researching human evolution and the hominin fossil record. Chris has been studying paleoanthropology in depth—which has required the study of hundreds of technical papers and dozens of related books. Contested Bones is the result of more than four years of intense research into the primary scientific literature concerning those bones that are thought to represent transitional forms between ape and man. This book’s title reflects the surprising reality that all the famous “hominin” bones continue to be fiercely contested today—even within the field of paleoanthropology. This work is unique in that it is the most comprehensive, systematic, and up-to-date book available that critically examines the major claims about the various hominin fossils. Even though the topic is technical, the book is accessible for a broad audience and is reported to be engaging even for nontechnical people. Chris Rupe is also working on a documentary called “Dismantled: A Scientific Deconstruction of the Theory of Evolution. It is premiering October 9-11. Find out more at https://www.back2genesis.org/. Episode Synopsis: A reporter for the Pall Mall Gazette investigates the case of a wolf that has escaped from the local zoo. She interviews Mr. Bilder, the zookeeper, to ask if he recalled anything suspicious surrounding the events. Mr. Bilder lays down some personal philosophy comparing the actions of humans and animals, and shares a few jokes with his wife before describing a man who had the animals upset the day before. Having described himself as being experienced with wolves, he brazenly petted Biserker, a ferocious-looking, but tame animal. That evening, Biserker was missing, and a zoo worker described seeing a large, grey dog through the bushes. As the reporter wraps up the interview, Biserker the wolf returns to Mr. Bilder's house. Dr. Seward realizes that he was supposed to be watching Lucy last night when a telegram arrives for him that should have been delivered the day before. He hurries to Lucy's house to check on her immediately. Van Helsing meets Seward shortly after he arrives to find no one to answer the door. The two break in through a window, and discover the four maids lying on the kitchen floor, having been drugged with laudanum. Seward and Van Helsing run upstairs and find Lucy's mother's body on the bed and Lucy near death. Seward wakes the maids who quickly draw a bath to warm Lucy back up again. Van Helsing and Seward agonize over how they can give Lucy more blood, depleted as they both are, when Quincey Morris, having arrived with a telegram from Arthur, steps in and donates his own blood for the necessary transfusion. Seward settles Quincey with a glass of wine. Van Helsing discovers a letter that dropped from Lucy while they were moving her into the tub, detailing the horrific events of the evening before. They decide to re-hide it in her bodice from whence it fell and not mention it when filling out Mrs. Westenra' death certificate, lest it create confusion. Quincy pulls Seward aside and asks him what could have drained Lucy of so much blood, recalling a vampire bat which once killed his favorite horse. Seward admits that he does not know, but he agrees to include Quincy in any and all further efforts to save Lucy's life. When Lucy finally awakes, she grieves for her dead mother. That night, Seward and Van Helsing are startled to discover her sitting up in her sleep, producing the paper from her bodice, and tearing it in half. Mina writes to Lucy telling her that Mr. Hawkins has died. The tragedy has impacted them both tremendously, but Jonathan in particular feels anxious about the responsibility that he must undertake in his work. Mina will try to visit Lucy when she and Jonathan are in London for Mr. Hawkins's funeral. Follow us on Twitter.com/CryptiCanticles, Facebook.com/DraculaRadioPlay, and at crypticcanticles.com
This week on The Literary Life, Angelina, Cindy and Thomas dive in to Act 4 of Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale. We are excited to announce a new online conference coming on March 13-14, 2020. Our theme will be Re-enchanting the World: The Legacy of the Inklings. Our keynote speaker is Inklings scholar, Joseph Pearce. Go to Angelina and Thomas’ new website HouseofHumaneLetters.com for all the info and to register. This act is jam packed with action and important plot points, but Cindy points out the connection between the shepherd and his son and the tale that Mamillius was telling Hermoine in an earlier act. Angelina brings up the juxtaposition of winter and spring in this play. She also talks about how Shakespeare departs from Aristotle’s “rules” for unity of time and place in playwriting. This act is all about redeeming what was lost, and it is also full of disguises. Thomas explains the connection between Perdita and Flora. Our hosts discuss the wedding customs of Shakespeare’s day as well as the festivities we see in this play. Thomas gives us a little overview of the myth of Persephone and how A Winter’s Tale alludes to this myth. Angelina also highlights the importance of the kiss in the fairy tale. Cindy encourages us to read and re-read because there is such depth in Shakespeare that we can never get to the bottom of it all. We are also invited to look for the mirrors of the characters and action in this act to things that happen in the first three acts. Angelina also instructs us on the two classic fairy tale story patterns and how A Winter’s Tale follows both of those patterns. The central image is of the crucified Christ, mildly accepting his suffering and death, his face full of peace. But spiraling forth from the foot of the cross, where it is watered by the blood of Christ, a stupendous acanthus bush curls outward and upward, encircling nearly a hundred separate images. The spiraling branches of the acanthus embrace even two pagan Roman gods, Baby Jupiter, formerly king of the gods, and Baby Neptune, formerly king of the deep, who rides a slippery looking dolphin. In C.S. Lewis' novel, Prince Caspian, there is a famous scene where Lucy rushes to Aslan the lion, falls between his front paws and buries her face in his mane. Aslan the lion represents Jesus. When Lucy is resting in his mane, she says these famous words. "Your bigger!", says Lucy. Aslan says, "That is because you are older, little one… every year you grow, you will find me bigger." C.S. Lewis' point is the more we grow in Christ, the bigger Christ becomes. In the first message of this Christmas series, we study the opening verses of the book of Hebrews to help us see that Jesus is greater and bigger than we can comprehend.

Today’s episode is a review of a fabulous SciFi novel entitled Lucy, which was written by Thea Ramsay. Description: Ten-year-old Lucy and her parents live on Earth in the last throes of its final holocaust. Their only hope is being accepted as refugees on another world, but one rejection letter after another eats away at their hope, while death closes in on them. Hope revives when a stranger arrives with a letter of acceptance from the mysterious planet Andorpha. While Lucy, her best friend, Kim, and her parents wait to board the space ship, her parents are killed. Lucy faces danger and growth as she comes to grips with her parents' death and the strange customs of Andorpha. While Kim laps up Andorphian love like warm milk, Lucy wonders if it's all too good to be true. When Lucy learns the Andorphians believe their planet is under a curse, she begins to suspect there is a reason that she and her family were so readily accepted as refugees. Do they expect her to be the antidote to an ancient curse? When Kim urges Lucy to accept the Andorphians and their way of life, the only shot at life they have, Lucy is certain she's right. If you or someone close to you has ever tried to give up alcohol for a stretch of time, you know that it can be a challenge, and hitting an anniversary or another milestone is a real achievement. Have you ever wanted to celebrate a sober achievement with someone? If so, you may have looked for a greeting card to commemorate the occasion – and if you did that, you probably noticed that there weren’t many choices. Today’s guest made that very discovery, then decided to do something about it. Lucy Wilkins and her business partner Sara Bender both had people in their lives who had struggled with drinking. When Lucy went looking for a greeting card to celebrate her loved one’s 100 days sober, she was temporarily stymied when she couldn’t find what she was looking for. When she talked it over with Sara, they decided to start making their own cards for the sober space. Their company is called We Are In Good Co. “We’re just saying, just make space for the people those cards aren’t relevant or appropriate for. Just make space for the sober cards.” Lucy explains that attitudes around sobriety are changing and younger people are more likely to be open and celebrate their sobriety, where older generations are more likely to hold their sober status close to the vest. As Lucy points out, sobriety doesn’t necessarily have to be a response to addiction or bad experiences with alcohol – going alcohol-free is a lifestyle choice, and many people choose it because they prefer it or because it’s healthier. Lucy and Sara have run into some challenges distributing their cards because some people assume that their niche is too small. However, they believe that the sober niche is growing, and the feedback they receive suggests that there are people out there searching for the type of fun, sober greetings offered by We Are In Good Co. This week’s episode is all about friendship and helping each other through the hard times in life as we talk about the remake of Martyrs. This movie tells the story of Lucy and Anna, two young women that have been friends since they met at an orphanage as children. Lucy had it pretty rough before she met Anna, but ever since they met Anna has been Lucy’s rock of support. When Lucy grows up, she decides to get revenge on the people that hurt her as a child and she drags Anna into the situation with her. Anna eventually learns that the stories Lucy has been telling have been true and she must find a way to free them from this horrific situation before it is too late. You have to give them credit for what they did with such a small budget, but the acting in this film could use a little work. It is crazy to think that this is a toned down version of the original film. What’s with all the time jumps? How long did the girls spend at the Patterson's’ house? Who was the girl that Anna was going to leave behind? How long was that drain pipe? This is a quick movie that takes the viewer for a bunch of gorey twists and turns, check it out. Thank you for all of the love you continue to show us. Please rate and review the podcast wherever you get it and if you like the show, share it with your friends. Have a great week.
