The fellas head on back to Rom-Com Land, this time with While You Were Sleeping, starring none other than Sandy B, our favorite baked bean. That's right, prepare to get all emotionally invested in this week's episode. Jokes including (but not limited to): Plato's Cavity, Luke's Northeast Cah-Nah, the Void Boy, echoes & thunder, and whether or not you will commit to this podcast(?).
Today, we welcome an accomplished actress, screenwriter, and director known for her roles in films like While You Were Sleeping, Universal Soldier, and Happy Texas, as well as her lead role as Dr. Samantha Waters in the NBC crime drama Profiler, which earned her a Saturn Award nomination for Best Actress. Many of you, like me, may know her best as the villainous Agent June Stahl in the FX crime drama Sons of Anarchy. Today, we're thrilled to discuss Ally's latest venture: her debut as an author with The Light Runner, a thrilling novel filled with twists, turns, and journeys into parallel worlds—perfect for our show. This week, Madison reports to us live from the bottom of a well while waiting for Lassie (at least that's what we assume by the horrendous quality of her audio--truly sorry!) to bring Chelsea the fabulous Sandy B flick While You Were Sleeping (1995). Chelsea surprised us all by actually enjoying the quirky movie, finding the found family story heartwarming despite the odd circumstances that create it. Tangents include peeing in the woods, Chelsea's potential serial killer neighbor, and so much more. Also, we are truly sorry to Bill Pullman for Chelsea pulling a Keke Palmer on you. Madison still thinks you were hot in this movie (but she is ovulating this week, so she still may not be a good judge of character). The cinematic world of love and laughter had rom-com enthusiast Madison head over heels from the time Harry met Sally. For genre skeptic Chelsea, however, it's been a grueling enemies-to-lovers plot. In Love at First Screening, Madison introduces Chelsea to all the fan-favorite love stories she's never wanted to watch. One friend's passion might be the other's displeasure, but doesn't love conquer all? Tune in every Wednesday to find out.
Jon and Jay talk about having writer dads, the pressure of trying to succeed as a second gen show biz kid, how to direct movies with being a jerk, being right, the value of being lucky, and the why Captain Crunch is better than Peanut Butter Crunch.Bio: Jon Turteltaub has been an elite producer and director of hit movies for the past 30 years. He is known for directing a series of hit films including 3 Ninjas, Cool Runnings, While You Were Sleeping, Phenomenon, National Treasure, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Last Vegas, The Meg and others that clearly weren't such big hits but did okay. His last film was the worldwide blockbuster The Meg, grossing over $500 million worldwide. Jon has also produced and directed several television projects, including the smash hit "Jericho" on CBS and “From the Earth to the Moon” for HBO. Jon was born in New York and raised in Beverly Hills before attending Wesleyan University and USC film school. His father, Saul Turteltaub, is a legendary television writer and producer known for "The Carol Burnett Show", "That Girl", "Sanford and Son" “Love American Style” and "What's Happening!". Jon has also served on the DGA Western Directors Council, as advisor to Represent.Us, and on the board of the Inner-City Filmmakers program. Jon and Amy have spent considerable time in Africa where they fund an orphanage in Kenya and work to protect and rehabilitate child soldiers in Uganda. Jon and Amy have three young children and, therefore, no time for anything fun.

What's this? A messy love quadrangle? You know Kelly and Ragon are all over that! We channel our best Normal Gossip podcast inspiration and dive into our discussion of the self-sabotaging lovers of Rainbow Valley! We ask such questions as “What's Ellen's deal anyway?” And “Wait, do we agree with Norman Douglas?” And most importantly “Who should we cast in our movie version of this story?” On a more serious note, if you'd like to help Kelly rebuild after losing her home in the terrible Eaton fire, we have a fundraiser to support her as she begins the overwhelming task of recovering. And if you would like to help Los Angeles recover from the horrific wildfires, here are some places that are doing good work: World Central Kitchen is feeding people on the ground in Los Angeles. LA County Fire Department is doing heroic work and we aren't done with the fires. Pasadena Humane Society is caring for the wild animals and pets lost or injured in the fire. Baby2Baby provides disaster relief to families and children in poverty impacted by the fires. Give Directly is fundraising to provide direct cash support to those in most need after the fire for shelter, food, clothing. Inspired by: This whole episode was inspired by one of our favorite podcasts Normal Gossip. Kelly was inspired by the 1995 Persuasion adaptation and the miniseries based on Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South. Ragon was inspired by the classic rom-com While You Were Sleeping and the time travel romance in About Time . “Lucy, you are born into a family. You do not join them like you do the Marines.” It's the Season Six Finale, and we watched “While You Were Sleeping” with our favorite gal pal, Moranne Keeler, and boy do we love us some Sandra Bullock. We spend a good portion of the pod pondering over that certain quality Sandra possesses that draws us to her every time. She's been America's Sweetheart since the ‘90s when she drove that bus right down the freeway, straight to our hearts. That X-factor quality really comes in handy when you're leading a movie in which the plot could come across as a little stalkery if played wrong. The entire cast really pulls this cuckoo plot together— really playing off each other as a family. We also talk about the believability of Peter Gallagher and Bill Pullman as brothers and which one we'd rather marry. We also start the show with a Leading Ladies Quiz featuring our gal Sandy B. When Matt falls onto the train tracks, Laci hops down to rescue him, but they both get hit by a train, and now they're podcasting from the afterlife. The first movie up in this Afterworld Era is While You Were Sleeping (1995), the Sandra Bullock imposter/coma/Christmas rom-com classic. How great is it seeing star-making, lightning-in-a-bottle performances like Bullock's performance here? How great is this Chicago-at-Christmastime establishing shot footage, complete with extras falling down? How great is it to know that if Laci or Matt realized the other had been lying about their identity for 15 years, they would get over it pretty quickly. ALSO: We're launching a Patreon in January! There are many Christmas-themed romantic comedies, it's time we discussed one. 1995's While You Were Sleeping features Sandra Bullock at the height of her "girl next door" era. In this episode three children, Donovan, Layla, and Ruby, explore the idea of resilience — being able to move through the hard things we face and bounce back or recover afterward. They share times they have had to practice resilience, and then they help a Link-a-deedle friend, LaLeek, who lives in the Land of Qook-a-lackas, learn about resilience. The guest star in this episode is Marc Grapey, an actor, director, writer and producer, with credits on stage, as well as in movies and TV. Marc has been a fixture of the Chicago Theatre community for the last 25 years, often appearing at Victory Gardens, The Goodman, Steppenwolf, and Writer's Theatre. He made his Broadway debut in 2005 opposite Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick in the hit revival of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple. His numerous films include SuperBad, Adventureland, The Day Trippers, While You Were Sleeping, At Any Price, Keeping up with the Joneses, and the upcoming Steven Spielberg produced Captive State. He has made over 60 guest appearances on television. The original song in the episode, "On With The Show," was written and performed by educator/composer Benjamin Weiner. Sound design and mixing is by Ahmed Ashour, and the ukulele music you hear is by actor and composer Bill English.Find more resources and activities to keep the learning going online at https://playsparkler.org/little-kids-big-hearts-resilience/.

“I like to watch.” From director Hal Ashby, Being There is wildly intelligent movie about an incredibly unintelligent man. Peter Sellers stars with Shirley MacLaine in a story about a simple-minded gardener and the power brokers who seem to think he's a genius. Clint, Cal and Alex talk about the power of projecting only what we want to see, how films can become eternally relevant and who has the bigger fan base, the Chicago Bears or the film While You Were Sleeping. Meanwhile, Dan's algorithm has its seasons. First it has Spring and Summer, but then it has Fall and Winter. And then it has Spring and Summer again… CineFix Top 100 was created by Clint Gage and Dan Parkhurst and is produced by Tayo Oyekan, with Director of Photography, Jamie Parslow and Technical Producer, Marhyan Franzen. Producer Jonathan Glickman joins Hollywood Gold again to discuss the making of 1995's classic romantic comedy WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING. Made at a time when a good romcom could launch the career of an unknown actress, Sandra Bullock's star turn put her into a category alongside the likes of Julia Roberts and Demi Moore, both of whom were offered the part. As a young producer in charge of running a set for the first time, Jon Glickman had a scare when the table read was a disaster and his lead actor almost quit. Quick and effective rewrites were done and the film was a huge hit, grossing over $180 million at the box office and solidifying its place in romcom history.

This episode will be the last of our daily releases for the month. From here to Christmas we'll be going every other day. But we think we've saved the best for last. Not the best conversations necessarily. Those have all been great and so will these. But like Home Alone yesterday, these next few movies are some of Michael's favorite holiday films. True classics like While You Were Sleeping, which Michael talked about with his friend Erik Johnson.
