Dial P for Procurement
Everyone Has a Role in Growing the Value Chain W/ Andrew Quincey

"If you focus too much on efficiency, you might get something cheap – but it doesn't deliver what you want. If you focus too much on effectiveness, you might spend more than you need. Those two sides need to be balanced." - Andrew Quincey It is much more difficult to measure value than savings, so even the most skilled procurement professionals tend to focus on savings instead of value. If, however, it is possible to identify why something is being done and how it is being done, procurement will be positioned to drive better overall outcomes.  Andrew Quincey is a procurement professional and academic with Leeds University Business School in the U.K. In this episode of Art of Supply, he comments on a recent article he wrote for the Journal of Public Procurement: "Achieving Value for Money Equilibrium." He highlights how procurement can move beyond execution to play a more strategic role across the entire value chain, with a special focus on complex public-sector environments. In this episode, Andrew and Kelly Barner discuss: The concept of "value for money equilibrium" and how balancing effectiveness and efficiency can lead to better outcomes How and why complexity increases exponentially in procurement projects, and what to do about it Practical ways procurement can move upstream, influence strategy, and engage more effectively in the "why" behind purchasing decisions Links: Achieving value for money equilibrium (Emerald Publishing) Kelly Barner on LinkedIn Art of Supply LinkedIn newsletter  Art of Supply on AOP Subscribe to the Art of Procurement Newsletter

Story of the Week (DR):Meta and YouTube Found Negligent in Landmark Social Media Addiction Case: A jury found the companies harmed a young user with design features that were addictive and led to her mental health distress. DRHistoric Financial PenaltiesNew Mexico: A jury ordered Meta to pay $375M in civil penalties ($5,000 per violation) for misleading the public about child safety.Los Angeles: In the first social media addiction trial of its kind, the jury awarded $6M in total damages (compensatory and punitive) to a single 20-year-old plaintiff, with Meta ordered to pay 70% and YouTube 30%.Section 230 "Immunity" is CrackingThese trials successfully sidestepped Section 230 by focusing on product design (like infinite scroll and autoplay) rather than the content itself. The juries ruled that the "addictive" nature of the apps was a design defect, not a speech issue.Direct Liability for "Addictive" FeaturesFor the first time, a jury found that features like infinite scrolling, notifications, and video autoplay were intentionally designed to "hook" young users. In the Los Angeles "KGM" trial, the jury found both Meta and YouTube negligent for creating products that they knew would harm children's mental health while failing to provide adequate warnings to parents.Evidence of "Profits Over Safety"The trials featured internal documents and depositions from Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram head Adam Mosseri. The evidence convinced jurors that executives were warned by their own employees about risks to children—including sexual exploitation and mental health "problematic use"—but chose to prioritize engagement and profits over implementing safety guardrails.A "Big Tobacco" Moment for TechLegal experts are comparing these verdicts to the 1990s lawsuits against the tobacco industry. Because the California trial was a "bellwether" (a test case), the win for the plaintiff opens the floodgates for thousands of similar pending lawsuits from families and school districts. It signals that social media companies can now be sued for the health consequences of their platforms, just like cigarette manufacturers.Elon Sux 2:Elon Musk loses big in court; X boycott perfectly legal: X admonished for “fishing expedition” as judge dismisses ad boycott lawsuit.Elon Musk Found Liable By Jury For Misleading Twitter Investors In $44 Billion Deal, Faces Potential $2.5 Billion DamagesElon Musk's Grok ordered to stop creating AI nudes by Dutch court as legal pressure mountsOn March 25, 2026, President Trump officially appointed the first 13 members to his President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). In exchange, the company has pledged to stop developing any new offshore wind in the U.S. entirely.Paying for Investments Already in ProgressCritics call the deal a "boondoggle" because the $1 billion "refund" is earmarked for natural gas and oil projects—specifically the Rio Grande LNG plant in Texas—that TotalEnergies was already heavily invested in. The article argues the government is essentially handing over taxpayer money for business moves the company was making anyway.A Tactical Pivot After Court LossesAfter the administration's previous attempts to block offshore wind were repeatedly struck down by federal judges, they've switched strategies. Instead of using executive orders that get tied up in court, they are now using "settlements" and "refunds" as a backdoor way to dismantle the renewable energy industry.Economic Irony During a Global Fuel CrisisThe payout comes at a time when global energy prices are spiking due to the war in the Middle East, highlighting the irony of spending $1B to kill domestic, zero-carbon wind power—which would provide long-term price stability—in favor of volatile fossil fuel markets. The "America First" ParadoxDespite the "America First" rhetoric, the administration is transferring a massive sum of U.S. taxpayer money to a foreign (French) corporation. Legal experts and advocates suggest this sets a "dangerous precedent," essentially signaling to other energy companies that they can get paid by the government not to build the green infrastructure they already bought leases for.Major outgoing CEOs are citing AI as a factor in their decisions to step downCoca-Cola CEO James Quincey (61) and former Walmart CEO Doug McMillon (59) have told CNBC that the next wave of artificial intelligence is a reason for their departures. Both CEOs said they believed their companies needed someone with new energy and understanding of AI to helm the companies' futures.Who is next?Apple/Tim Cook (63): long tenure; Apple needs rapid AI product pivots; investor impatience could risePepsi/Ramon Laguarta (60): consumer packaged goods facing AI-driven marketing/supply chain changeMcDonald's/Chris Kempczinski (55): operations + AI in ordering, automationAir Canada CEO [Michael Rousseau] Apologizes For Lack of French Language Skills But Refuses to Resign Over ‘Insulting' Crash Video MessageSunday night: an Air Canada plane collided with a fire truck while landing at LGA: the pilot and copilot were killed and both fire officers were injuredMany possible reasons for crash: but worth noting that: Only two controllers were working in the tower overnight, combining multiple roles including ground and local control. The NTSB says that setup is standard for the midnight shift but there have been long-standing concerns about workload and fatigue.POPULIST MATH TIME: Using a recent-year estimate of airports with scheduled overnight service: 450 airports; adding one additional air traffic controller fully loaded annual cost: $180,000 per controller (approximate — $120k salary + ~50% benefits/overhead). Annual cost = 450 airports × $180,000 = $81,000,000.The embattled chief executive of Air Canada has publicly apologized for his lack of French language skills after he was slammed for releasing an English-only video message about the fatal crash of an Air Canada Express regional jet at LaGuardia Airport late on Sunday.Headquartered in French-speaking Quebec, Air Canada is subject to Canada's Official Languages Act, which means that it must serve passengers in both English and French.Because Air Canada is the national flag carrier, it is subject to the Canada Transportation Act and the Air Canada Public Participation Act. These laws mandate that:At least 75% of the voting interests must be owned and controlled by Canadians. The company must maintain its head office in Montreal. No single non-resident (or group of non-residents) can own more than 25% of the voting interests.Under the Official Languages Act and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, English and French have "equality of status" in all institutions of the Parliament and Government of Canada.Quebec: The only province that is officially unilingual (French). The bill included $21 in now-unconstitutional tariffs and $15 in "FedEx's customs brokerage and duty advancement fees," according to the complaint.Unbeknownst to many, companies are likely layering in fees on top of the tariffs and just calling it part of the tariffs - for FedEx and UPS, they ALREADY DEALT WITH TARIFFS because they existed before, but now they just charged you extra fees for funsiesBut don't get angry at FedEx's CEO Rajesh Subramaniam - FedEx founder and dictator Fred Smith is Executive Chair of the board and has 57% influence over the companyNetflix raises prices across all streaming plansThe price hike comes as Netflix has been investing heavily in its content, including new ventures into the live events space and into video podcasts.Netflix has 325m subscribers and generated 10.9bn in profit in 2025That's $33.53 per subscriber in profit - and they now want to charge an extra $12/year per subscriber = $3.9bn in extra revenueThey planned to spend an extra $2bn on content in 2026(does math)... leaving $1.9bn in us giving money to Netflix for nothing new - and the standard and premium plans are going up by $2, not $1! Fun! So we're giving them more! But don't get angry at Netflix CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters - Reed Hastings, who sold most of his shares but is the founder, still chairs the board and has the majority of influence at the company! In fact, Hastings close confident and early investor Jay Hoag, who is lead “independent” director after 27 YEARS on the board, was voted out and just stuck around and has the second most influence!Major outgoing CEOs are citing AI as a factor in their decisions to step downOutgoing Coca Cola CEO James Quincey said the company needs, “someone with the energy to pursue a completely new transformation of the enterprise”Quincey is 61 years old, being succeeded by the perfect AI leader: COO Henrique Braun who got a bachelors in architecture and an MBA and is 59 years oldBut wait, don't get sad! In Recall This Book's second episode (January 2019) John and Elizabeth spoke with their brilliant Brandeis colleague, the MacArthur-winning neuroscientist Gina Turrigiano, about a number of different facets of addiction. The conversation seems as timely as ever. What makes an addiction to a morning constitutional different from–or similar to–an addiction to Fentanyl? What are the biological and social factors to consider? Should the addict be thought of in binary terms, or addiction as a state that people move into and out of? They contemplate these questions through biological, anthropological, and literary lenses, drawing on Marc Lewis, Angela Garcia, and Thomas de Quincey. Defenseman can be onery. They are defensemen after all. Kyle Quincey was no exception and had his moments, however many were justified. Like the time he pinned a hockey stick between the eyes of Redwings head coach Mike Babcock and “requested” respect during his second stint in Detroit after coming off 3 solid years with the Avalanche. Babcock obliged and put Kyle on the power play the next night.  Kyle started skating in his home country of Canada when he was just a toddler. Junior hockey took the place of college, and the Redwings drafted him in 2003. Babcock was his coach then, which is why it was difficult for him not to treat Kyle like a rookie during the second go around.  Kyle's career took him from one coast to the other. He endured numerous injuries and over 20 concussions.  He also earned respect and lifelong friends everywhere he went whether it was the Redwings, Kings, Avs, Devils, Blue Jackets or the Wild. Hockey is family and he needed that family after he retired in 2019.   In 2020, Kyle's one year old son Axl was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Kyle was just starting to figure out who he was post-hockey and had to put that mental anguish aside to be a dad, husband and support his family. It was tough between Covid and moving short term to Philly for Axl's surgery, but Axl came out cancer free. Then it was time to focus on Kyle.  Kyle found a path to fulfillment by creating the Do Good Ranch and helping others who have experienced mental and physical trauma. The Do Good Ranch offers a stunning setting for healing, wellness and education into self-improvement and personal growth. The ranch opened in April of 2025 and is available for reservations and private retreats.

From Kensington to the East End, under candlelight, gas lamp and then neon signs, London is both a bustling physical metropolis and a stirring psychic encounter. The most depraved depictions of London in fiction, film, poetry, television and theatre have irrevocably merged with the reality of its dark history, creating a phantasmagoria defined by murder, vice and the unnatural. In this panoptic look at the capital at its most eerie and macabre, Dr. Clive Bloom takes a tour of Gothic London's uncanny literature, arcane events and its infamous and imagined geographies. From David Bowie to T S Eliot, Thomas de Quincey to Aleister Crowley, the prophetess Joanna Southcott to the 'ghosts' of Abba and the worlds of Neil Gaiman and Clive Barker, these are the figures that populate a city lost in fog and blind alleys, where the dead can be raised, the living sacrificed and the clandestine thrive.  Suturing together fact and fantasy, London Uncanny: A Gothic Guide to the Capital in Weird History and Fiction (Bloomsbury, 2025) presents the urban landscape of the capital as a space of wonder and madness, haunted by its past and haunting the present. Stalking through disease and degeneracy, death and murder, spiritualism, lunacy and the occult, Bloom crafts a singular, integrated concept of a London where dreams and nightmares meet. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Shaun Quincey is a top business executive and angel investor helping fund Kiwi business dreams. But before that he became the only person to have successfully rowed solo from Australia to New Zealand and became a top selling author after writing a book about it. We spent the first half talking about his epic solo Tasman voyage, which took two years of planning and 54 days of rowing in the world's most treacherous stretches of water. This story is insane, and includes yarns about rowing into whales, flipping his boat and being trapped under it for 30 minutes, self-doubt, elite mindset and how his dad is the only other person to have rowed the Tasman solo – in the other direction in 1977. Then in the second half we talk about his incredible business success. Shaun is the founder of Genoapay, which quickly became one of the fastest growing payment companies in New Zealand. Within 6 months, the company was valued at close to 10 million dollars. Genoapay was acquired by Latitude where Shaun became General Manager, before taking up roles as a Director at IceHouse Ventures and Payleadr. He is now CEO and Co-founder of Simfuni – which was named the Insurtech start-up of the year in 2024. All that is to say – what he has achieved since rowing the Tasman is equally impressive as his epic sea expedition. This is a ripper of an ep, Shaun is authentic, self-deprecating and funny – with so much wisdom to share. And we're so stoked to be able to announce him as the latest addition to B2B Speakers.

Hear Corporate America's New Euphemisms for Gouging You

We should pay attention to corporate America's fluctuating wordplay, for their frequent contortions of language disguise ploys to dupe, confuse, and rip off us hoi polloi – i.e., their customers. For example, here's a mouthful that's been gaining popularity among manufacturers of food products: Price Pack Architecture. It's a bit of gobbledygook meant to obscure the profiteering practice of – shhhh – ever so quietly shrinking the size and contents of their packages – without lowering prices. Economists dubbed this “shrinkflation,” but that too clearly implied gouging. Thus, corporate image-makers invented the incomprehensible nonsense phrase of PPA to cloak their anti-consumer trickery. This convoluted codeword also allows the tricksters to brag openly about their cleverness to their Wall Street investors. Here's Coca-Cola's CEO, for example, doing corporate-speak to bankers in February: “We are leveraging our revenue growth management capabilities to tailor our offerings and price pack architecture to meet consumers' evolving needs.”English translation: Consumers will need to pay us more for less Coke. You could almost hear the bankers weep for joy over Coke's sneaky scheme to stiff its customers.Perhaps you've wondered what big-time corporate CEOs actually do to rake in their exorbitant salaries, now averaging more than $8,000 an hour! Well, there it is: The CEO's main job is to keep workers' pay low, monopolize markets, and constantly invent slick ways to squeeze another dime from each consumer's pocket. It's not honest work, but it does pay well. Coca-Cola's CEO James Quincey, for example, hauled in $25 million in pay last year. That's 1,800 times more than the annual income of the typical Coca-Cola worker, who'll now pay more for a sip of Coke, thanks to Quincey's “price pack architecture.”Photo courtesy Alley of Ashes on Flickr.Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication. In a special episode of Squawk Pod, Joe Kernen, Becky Quick, and Andrew Ross Sorkin are speaking with Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Quincey shares different AI innovations shaking up the world of Coke, including Marshmello (the DJ) flavors, and Times Square Coke Christmas cards. Looking ahead, he considers the marketing opportunities generative AI could power. Plus, selling beverages in nearly every country in the world, Coca-Cola had to pass on input costs to consumers. Now, inflation is moderating and so are the price hikes–at least in the U.S. and Europe. Quincey discusses global consumer, navigating inflation, and catering to popular and unpopular drink tastes.
