Local advocates with the Healthi Kids Initiative and Common Ground Health and New York State United Teachers went to Albany to rally for what they call the Right to Recess. While many school districts in the state require 20 minutes of recess for K–6 students, enforcement varies — and access to play is often shaped by race, income, and neighborhood. Experts and families say 20 minutes isn't enough, and that playful learning should extend from pre-K through 12th grade. With the pandemic underscoring the need for movement and connection, guest host Noelle Evans asks: why is recess essential, and how can schools make it more equitable and effective? Our guests:  Mike Bulger, director of Whole Child Health Advocacy with the Healthi Kids Coalition Sharon Peck, parent advocate and associate professor of literacy at SUNY Geneseo

Suddenly the Division III Men's and Women's Basketball Championship Tournaments are down to sixteen teams, each. It's a known result each year, but it's still stunning and the results this past weekend were equally as stunning. Tune into Hoopsville presented by D3hoops.com as we talk to those who either dominated or survived through regional play. Most of those we talk with today were either pulled off at least one upset or once again proved they know how to win in March. And five years ago, the DIII tournaments, like everything else in the world, ceased. Teams were ready to play the next round of tournament games, but instead went home. It left so many "what-ifs" and predictions on who may have been crowned 2020 National Champions. D3hoops.com Around the Nation Columnist Ryan Scott took the time, shortly after the shutdown, to prognosticate how he would have seen the tournaments play out. Guests appearing on the Hudl Hoopsville Hotline: - Alyssa Polosky, SUNY Geneseo women's coach - Brad Fischer, No. 11 UW-Oshkosh women's coach - Ryan Scott, D3hoops.com Around the Nation columnist - Marcus Kahn, Mary Washington men's coach - Aaron Kelly, Catholic men's coach - Will Bartoszek, Austin Brewer and Matt Brackett, Hardin-Simmons senior forward, senior center, and men's coach

The Mark of Criminality positions the work of key gangsta rap artists--Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Tupac Shakur--as well as the controversies their work produced, squarely within the law-and-order politics and popular culture of the 1980s and 1990s to reveal a profoundly complex period in American history when the meanings of crime and criminality were incredibly unstable. McCann argues that, among other well-circulated meanings, the mark of criminality was a source of power, credibility, and revenue. By understanding gangsta rap as a potent, if deeply imperfect, enactment of the mark of criminality, we can better understand how crime is always a site of struggle over meaning. Data makes the world go round. In this episode, we're joined by Tina and Maddy, our incredible partners from SUNY Geneseo who have been helping us design and conduct a research project about camp for the past couple of years. We believe that kids become more radically empathetic decision makers by practicing, and we're collecting the research to back it up. We talk about what shape this project has taken in the past, all that we've learned, and where it's going next summer and beyond. We are shifting to a much more camper-led approach, we talk about sharing power with youth and partnering with them to create a project that they're excited and passionate about. We also talk about how empowering it is to learn how to read data and how learning even basic research skills can open up doors of possibilities. Join us for an exciting conversation and stay tuned for part two where we talk with our Camper Board about their hopes and dreams for this research project.

They relied on their pack running and knew every runner mattered as they got closer to Nationals. The turning point in the season was when they won the Mike Woods Invite, taking down SUNY Geneseo, Johns Hopkins and Lynchburg. Before the race, they were hoping to finish third. What propelled Carleton forward this year was how close they were a team. On the line they kept things loose and reminded each other of what makes them stand out. This is a recap episode of my very first episode here in Key West talking about Fantasy Fest.  I wanted to release this episode for the last weekend of Fantasy Fest, so you all could learn more about this week long party that happens every year in Key West! In our first episode, Mark Baratto speaks with Nadene Grossman Orr who handles all of the planning for Fantasy Fest, the Annual Key West Songwriters Festival, and many more events through her company We've Got The Keys. We go deep into why she moved to Key West and what she loves about living and working here, and some of her favorite spots in town to eat drink and be merry. MORE ON NADENE Nadene arrived in Key West Florida in 1991 just after Graduation from SUNY Geneseo. Looking back on her introduction to Island Life – she established a strong foundation with the best Key West jobs … Cocktail Server, Crew on the Catamarans, and Concierge! The 3 C's! She learned the Island inside and out and made lasting friendships that grew into the professional relationships she has today with so many local business owners and industry professionals. So in love with the Island Lifestyle - Nadene turned her passion into Business in 2004 - establishing We've Got the Keys - Wedding & Event Planners for the Florida Keys. We Coordinated nearly 800 Destination Weddings up until December 2015 when we changed our focus to Corporate Events, Destination Management and Producing City-Wide Festivals & Events. With an eye for detail, Nadene's focus is on designing creative Incentive Travel programs for our corporate clients, introducing visitors to uniquely Key West experiences, customized tours, one of a kind adventures and culinary delights – Nadene & her Team challenge themselves daily to delight, impress and inspire our guests! Nadene is thrilled to be a producer for the Annual Key West Songwriters Festival – founded in 1994 - this event is the largest of its kind - bringing more than 175 Performing Singer-Songwriters to Key West each year to perform their original music on Key West's intimate stages - including beaches, bars, theaters and boats! One of the founding producers of the Annual Key West Film Festival, Nadene and her team at We've got the Keys helped to establish this new festival for Key West – founded in 2012 we worked with the Film Festival for its first Three Years. With a deep sense of Community involvement – Supporting local events and non-profit organizations over the years has been an integral part of our work. In November 2015 Nadene proudly accepted the role of Event Director for AIDS Help Inc. – coordinating their annual local events, including Taste of Key West, Vintners Dinner, Tree of Hope, & The Coronation for King & Queen of Fantasy Fest. The D3 Cross Country season is heating up. The big meets are approaching and the performances are taking it up a notch. For Week 5, we're bring back the Pocket Aces award and recognizing someone who faired well against strong competition. The Pocket Aces award goes to Morgan Uhlhorn + Grace Richardson from NYU. This duo finished third and fourth at the Paul Short Brown Race which helped NYU take the team win. Last year, we saw a resurgence from the NYU squad and Grace Richardson was a big part of that. They finished 26th in the nation and showed flashes of their potential. Vivian Kane made the outdoor track national meet and now add in a strong first-year in Morgan Uhlhorn, the Violets are looking like a contender. We took the liberty to combine all D3 teams from Paul Short. they finished just six points behind SUNY Geneseo. With Morgan and Grace leading the way, they deserving of the Pocket Aces award. Unfortunately, we weren't able to Interview them but want to recognize them anyway. Max and North Central traveled down to Louisville to take on strong D1 and D2 competition. Max finished sixth in a race that featured Adams State, Grand Valley State and Purdue. Svienty led NCC to a fifth place team finish as well. Looking at where Max finished, he would have been the number one runner for Grand Valley and Purdue plus the number two for Adams State. When speaking to Max, he likes to go into these races with a mindset that division doesn't matter. He's ready to take on any competition and show D3 runners can be just as good. We spoke with Max during track about getting NCC back on track. Though it's early in the season, the team feels confident with how the season has gone so far. They're feeling ready to take on these big meets and get NCC back to the podium. Both schools were top performers in the Washington Monthly's annual college rankings. The magazine puts a premium on graduation rates, overall costs to students and families, whether graduates end up in good-paying jobs doing meaningful work, and how ready they are for advanced degrees. Editor-in-Chief Paul Glastris discusses the methodology behind the innovative rankings, as well as some of the surprise hits in this year's list. Also from this month's issue, Glastris discusses contributing writer Anne E. 1991's Black Robe is probably a movie you've never heard of, but maybe you should. It's one of the rare films that travel back to 17th Century New France to allow us to witness interactions between Indigenous communities and Jesuit missionaries. I watched this film in college and it made an impression on me. So I asked Michael Oberg to come on the pod to talk not only about this film but about how to teach this film as well as point out the complicated relationships between people during the era. This is maybe a bit more cerebral episode than some of the others, and I hope you like it.About our guest:Michael Leroy Oberg, the author of Native America, is Distinguished Professor of History at SUNY-Geneseo and founder of the Geneseo Center for Local and Municipal History, which he directed from 2019 until 2022.  In addition to this textbook, he has written the following works:   Dominion and Civility: English Imperialism and Native America, 1585-1685 (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1999); Uncas: First of the Mohegans, (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 2003); Samuel Wiseman's Book of Record: The Official Account of Bacon's Rebellion in Virginia, (Lanham: Lexington Books, 2005); The Head in Edward Nugent's Hand: Roanoke's Forgotten Indians,  (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2007); the first edition of Native America; Professional Indian: Eleazer Williams's American Odyssey, (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2015); and Peacemakers: The Iroquois, the United States, and the Treaty of Canandaigua, 1794, (New York: Oxford University Press, 2015).  He has published, as well, articles and reviews, and has worked as a historical consultant for native communities in New York and North Carolina, as well as for the Indian Resources Section of the United States Department of Justice.  He has won awards for his teaching and research in Montana and in New York, including the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

An Alcott protagonist even more trans than Jo March? It's more likely than you think. Lou's 1876 sensation story "Enigmas" features a young man who's hired to spy on another young man - a man who is short and delicate and rather young-looking, all things considered. (See where this is going?) Our spy is swiftly overtaken by sexual attraction to the man he's been hired to report on. Before the story's over and the spy is unmasked, Alcott will take the gender binary and fold it into a Mobius strip. Here to dive deep into this delightful bit of Alcottiana is Alice Rutkowski, chair and associate professor of English at SUNY Geneseo. She often teaches the courses Literature and the Civil War, the Queer Nineteenth Century, Safe Zone Train-the-Trainer, Feminism and Pornography, and Major Authors: Melville, among others. Her research centers on the Civil War and Reconstruction as well as queer theory and trans politics. In 2013, she founded the LGBTQ Issues Working Group at SUNY Geneseo, and she's the coordinator of the college's Safe Zone Network. Our cover art is by Mattie Lubchansky. It interpolates the cover art for Bethany C. Morrow's book "So Many Beginnings: A Little Women Remix," with permission from Macmillan Children's Publishing Group. It also interpolates the cover art for Hena Khan's book “More to the Story,” with permission from Simon & Schuster. Our theme music is Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 16 in C Major. January 2017 Nadene was selected to become the new Director of FANTASY FEST! The We've got the Keys Team took on their Biggest EVENT to date! Fantasy Fest is one of Key West's largest and most iconic Festivals – originating in 1979 – this Festival is world-famous. Proudly partnering with Wonderdog Studios and expanding our Event Staff to take Fantasy Fest into the Future and Beyond! About Orderful Orderful is a complete cloud EDI platform for manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and technology companies. Forward-thinking companies are using Orderful to replace their existing EDI infrastructure. Our product is an API that enables companies to connect once and trade EDI data with their supply chain. Our customers get to consolidate their EDI integration complexity, quickly enable trading partners as self-service and reduce costs. Key Takeaways: A Modern Approach to EDI Jonathan Kish is the Vice President of Business Development at Orderful, a SaaS EDI platform that makes EDI trading simpler, cheaper, and better. In the podcast interview, Joe and Jonathan discuss EDI, EDI integration challenges, and how Orderful has eliminated the need for companies to build point-to-point EDI integrations. EDI stands for electronic data interchange, which is a standard for exchanging information between computer systems. Traditionally, when trading partners like manufacturers, retailers, logistics companies, want to connect via EDI they relied on custom-made integration environments with a heavy reliance on consultants and managed service providers. This approach was difficult, time consuming, and very expensive. Orderful's API challenges the traditional integration infrastructure and eliminates the need for companies to build point-to-point EDI integrations. Orderful is solving the EDI integration problem in an automated, transparent, and scalable way. Orderful is a new kind of EDI provider, the focus of the platform is to improve the global supply chain by enabling suppliers to immediately trade data with buyers. They are helping the small guys get to market and they want to create a world where data trading is not a barrier. In this episode, we get into the legacies of Columbus and America's genocide of Indigenous people with Prof. Michael Oberg (@nativeamtext), the larger problems of the way Native American History is taught, and why a 1619 Project is needed for American Indians too. We start off with a clip from the Sopranos highlighting the conflict in the Italian-American community over Columbus Day. And then we deep dive into Indigenous Peoples' Day, the cultural impact of America's genocide, the Indian Wars and violence in the U.S. historical narrative. We also talk about whether cultural gains (things like tearing down Columbus statues, changing sports team names, etc.) will result in material gains (economics, health care, etc) for Native Americans, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the epidemic of police murder of Indigenous people. Michael Oberg is Distinguished Professor of History at SUNY-Geneseo. The author of seven books on Native American history, Oberg received a SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2003 and a Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship in 2013. ------------------------ Links// Michael Oberg's website: https://michaelleroyoberg.com/ Indigenous Lives Matter: Some Thoughts on the Death of Reynold High Pine, 1972.
