Richard Eng covers the Horse Racing industry. Handicapping for Dummies is one of the many handicapping books he wrote. He also is a writer for Las Vegas Review Journal and the Daily Racing Form. While Rich reports on the racing scene from coast to coast, his forte over the past decade has been the California competition. So far on the Triple Crown trail it appears that “The West Coast, is the Best Coast,” with winners Medina Spirit and Rombauer in the record books (kind of). We will ask Rich if the current trend is expected to continue in the 1 ½ mile Belmont Stakes. Only Santa Anita offers two graded stakes races on Saturday and we’ll see who Rich and John favor in those events. The first is the Grade 2, $200,000 Santa Maria, a race that could launch Ce Ce to millionaire status. Michael McCarthy, fresh off of his Preakness win, will send her to post over the Santa Anita main track where she flourishes. In the Grade 3, $100,000 Honeymoon at 1 1/8 miles on the turf, the big question appears to be – who can go the distance? The Irish-bred Going Global did just so when winning the Grade 3 Providencia here in April. Eyes will also be on the lightly raced Madone, who has won 4 of 5 starts on grass at a mile while taking the Grade 3 Senorita at Santa Anita. Tom Law is the Managing Editor of ST Publishing, Inc., the award-winning publishing company that produces The Saratoga Special and Steeplechase Times. He is expected to assist in marketing, sales, and editorial efforts at a satellite office in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. in early 2013. Law, a native of Saratoga Springs, is currently the president of the National Turf Writers And Broadcasters, which he served as president of from 2006 to 2012. The former longtime managing editor for Thoroughbred Times, Law was recognized in 2011 with the Eclipse Award in the Multimedia/Internet category for coverage of the 2011 Breeders’ Cup. He is a two-time winner of the Bill Leggett Breeders’ Cup Writing Award and the winner of the Red Smith Kentucky Derby Writing Award. Along with Joe and Sean Clancy, Tom helps operate the popular racing website thisishorseracing.com Tom Law is now President of the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters. As a respected journalist we thought Tom would be the perfect person to weigh in on all that has happened in the world of racing in the past three weeks, from the Derby, its post-race storm for Bob Baffert through Rombauer’s impressive upset win in the Preakness Stakes. Tom and the Clancy brothers are already gearing up for the summer season at the Spa and he will update us on “The Return (in print) of the popular Saratoga Special!”

Did we mention he does voice-over work, and motivational speaking? YEAH... this was high-octane and just a fantastic trip through the mind of a super successful person! What do A-listers have that B & C listers don't? Well, you need to listen! Rich was fantastic, and he had to run early, so we WILL have him back! Looking forward to his return! Our conversation with Rich Mogull was intended to provide an analyst view point on public cloud security. While Rich certainly delivered on this promise, the episode turned into something more important: therapy. If you find yourself wondering if you’re burnt out from cyber security and life in general, this is for you. Our conversation with Rich starts with the work he does in disaster response, focusing on his recent time responding to the COVID-19 pandemic as a paramedic.  He explains how key concepts of anti-fragility from responder culture such as “trench foot” and “changing your socks” also apply to the rough and tumble world of cyber security— especially in assessing yourself for burnout. If you find yourself drowning in work and straining to catch up to the rest of the organization's push to the public cloud, this is for you.  We discuss how this happens quite naturally in most places, resulting in a dysfunctional norm of security teams inadvertently being left behind but still responsible for protecting the public cloud. Rich lays out a recipe for getting back on track, starting with making sure it simply isn’t time to throw in the towel and find a better gig.If multi-cloud seems impossible to defend with the skills and resources you have, you’re probably right. Rich takes us through the mind-boggling complexity of what it takes to stay on top of a single public cloud environment, let alone several. He doesn’t mince words in his unflattering assessment of the challenges with all 3 major cloud service providers: Amazon, Google & Microsoft. We wrap up with a hopeful look at what lies ahead for protecting the public cloud. Rich and Dave share examples of how long standing problems such as re-architecting are now solvable and operational challenges can truly be simplified when mantras like “shift left” move from buzzword bingo to new reality.

In our fifth and final installment of For the Love of Health & Wellness, we’re exploring the wide world of career health, a huge part of many of our lives that affects us mind, body, and soul. How we spend our days is how we spend our lives, and if you work full-time, you know how much of your day seems to be dedicated to making a living. But what happens when you’re ready for the next step . . . and you don’t know what it is? Whether you’re a young person trying to break into a career or you’re wanting to start fresh later in life, what if it feels like the opportunities you expected aren’t presenting themselves? Rich Karlgaard, the publisher of Forbes Magazine, helps us embrace the notion that it’s never too late for us. While Rich landed a job that he loves, he didn’t always have a clear idea of his path. Years after he graduated from college, he wandered from job to entry-level job, seeking a spark from something (like so many of us). Rich has written a fascinating book called Late Bloomers, and he and Jen muse on why our world is so obsessed with early achievement, how that’s hurting adults and kids alike, and the benefits of “peaking” at a higher age. It’s never too late to start the business, write the book, go after the dream. In fact, the wisdom we might gain through hard-won experience could be just the thing that helps us succeed.

Today we're having a conversation with Rich Stein about the Global Philanthropy Leaders (GPL) initiative that works in churches with small groups of motivated, reliable, and curious youth to help them make microloans to those who wouldn't otherwise have access to capital. Rich lives in Sandy Hook, Connecticut with his wife and they are members of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Ridgefield. Rich is a co-founder of the GPL initiative, along with St. Stephen's rector the Rev. Whitney Altopp and their youth coordinator, Jane Lindenberg. Rich has worked as a private investor for the past two decades. He has a BA in Economics from the University of Chicago and an MBA in Marketing & Strategy from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management of Northwestern University. In addition to being a member of St. Stephen's he now chairs their investment committee, and he also serves on the board of trustees for the investment funds of the Episcopal Church of Connecticut, or ECCT. Rich joined us by phone, from Chicago. We began by trying to understand what GPL is all about.  (It is NOT related to the free software license also called GPL!!) “It’s about offering youth the opportunity to make a tangible difference in  people’s lives half a world away by making microloans to help [them] start or expand a business ... “ he said. They’re also learning how faith helps them inform those decisions. We got into some of the details of how it works. He talked about what he’s looking for in the young people – high schoolers - who are selected to be part of the initiative, and teaching the guidelines for making the microloans. He later shared that each youth receives $200 to make the loans and is asked to add $25 of their own money. We also talked about what constitutes a microloan and he provided the example of a farmer who wants to buy a cow for $500 – a huge amount to the farmer, but too small for a bank. And there’s no collateral. Rich explained microfinance work. He works through Kiva, an international nonprofit, and said available loans are listed on the Kiva website. That’s where the GPL youth leaders find their opportunities. While Rich teaches some of the guidelines and practices that have helped him over the years in making microloans, St. Stephen’s rector wanted to add an explicit component for faith. They incorporate the practice of “Dwelling in the Word” of scripture at their meetings. Whether we like it or not, money is an exchange of value, Rich said, so we have to be willing to discuss money on a spiritually mature basis. Rich said the initiative has already spread from St. Stephen’s, Ridgefield to St. John’s, Bridgeport and Saint Luke’s, Darien. To expand further, GPL recently applied for and received a grant for $11,000 from ECCT’s Sustainability Development Fund, which addresses any of the 17 U.N. Sustainability goals (microloans address 13 of 17). The idea is to find additional parishes that want to host a GPL initiative and are willing to match a grant of $1000 with $1000 of their own.   Toward the end of our podcast, Rich explained how he got into microfinance, and how his involvement in microfinance as a spiritual practice. He appreciates that he’s been able to help some of the youth not only learn about economics and microfinance, and to see how it intersects with their faith. On February 9, 2019, from 1-2 p.m.,  following the Southwest Region Convocation at St. Matthew’s, Wilton, Rich will do a “Come and See” presentation about what it would take to start a GPL initiative at their parish. Wall Street Unplugged - Your Best Source for Finance, Investing & Economics

Today I welcome back a 40-year market veteran... and one of my favorite bears: Rich Suttmeier. Rich is an incredible analyst. He’s also founder and CEO of Global Market Consultants, with great insight on a variety of topics. He breaks down Turkey’s financial crisis… why it’s significant to individual investors… and how it could be the catalyst that pops a $270 trillion debt bubble. While Rich tends to land on the bearish side, he’s been bullish on FAANG stocks (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google) for quite some time. He explains why he’s now changing his tune on these tech giants. We also cover the banking sector. Rich highlights several measures banks are using right now to stick it to Main Street. He and I have passionate debates about this sector… so you’re in for some fantastic entertainment and a solid education. Then I break down earnings season in my educational segment [42:35]. On the surface, earnings and sales growth may look positive… but there are significant risks most investors and analysts are overlooking—risks that could push stocks significantly lower over the next six months. As always, I share all the details and numbers to back up this claim… and explain the steps you can take to protect yourself.

This episode of Just the Tips talks with two people who have boldly gone where few dare to tread: starting a business together as a married couple. Natasha and Rich Hazlett had very successful corporate careers, Natasha as an attorney, before deciding to get into the coaching business. And their careers have just soared since then, doing amazing things for their clients and for women entrepreneurs in particular. They are experts at helping clients build communities around their products or services, and creating that elusive “tribe.” This is a really great episode for anyone who’s looking for a little inspiration to make that leap into entrepreneurship, or interested in adding a little good to the world as you’re pursuing your passion. Taking the leap While Rich was always something of an entrepreneur, running a car wash business when he was 12, and always pursuing a side hustle while he was working in advertising, entrepreneurship was new to Natasha. She said she was working in her law firm, two years out of law school, and just had an “Oh God” moment where she realized that was going to be her life for the next 40 years and she had to get out of it. And around that time, she’d met Rich and Rich had become interested in network marketing, so Natasha grabbed the bulls by the horns and said they were going to do it together. They stayed at their jobs, but then came home and worked from 7pm to 1am every night to get the business up and running. Why did they do it? You’ll have to listen to this week’s episode of Just the Tips to find out. The Setback Rich and Natasha’s network and email marketing business as doing well, but then they got hit with an enormous setback, essentially being told by a compliance agency that they couldn’t do what they were doing anymore. Natasha got fed up and quit, but as she says, Rich “took it like a champ,” and soldiered on, getting the business back online and rolling again. It’s a really fascinating story and shows how many potholes there are in the road, and how deep and dangerous those potholes can be. But then they were able to turn things around, and now they’re helping clients like one in particular, whose now raking in seven times more in revenue per month than she was before working with Rich and Natasha. This may not be a rags to riches story, but it is the story of how working through adversity can really transform a business and business owners. Build a tribe One of the things that Natasha and Rich are so good at is helping their clients build a community or a tribe around what they’re doing. And Natasha says something so smart on this week’s Just the Tips: A lot of people want to build a tribe or a movement, but what they don’t realize is they can’t just declare that’s what they’re doing. Other people are the ones who will make what you’re doing a movement. And so what Rich and Natasha do is work with people on building relationships with large groups of people, getting your message out to those people, so you’re not just working each client one by one. You’re creating a community where everyone is helping each other out. And they provide some great tips on how to do just that. The good kind of manifesto Rich and Natasha provide some great advice on this week’s Just the Tips episode, particularly in terms of building a tribe or community. The first tip is actually something Dean and I have talked a lot about on this show, which is not chasing after every customer or community member, but finding the right people who are right for what you’re selling and right for contributing to the community. Another important ingredient is community guidelines so you can kick people out if they’re disruptive (so long, Dean) and a manifesto that clearly lays out why the tribe is important. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg for this episode, you’re going to have to listen to hear the rest of this awesome advice.
