Debbi Calton has been on the radio her whole life. Or at least it seems that way. From her beginnings in Charlotte, NC to Tampa to Orlando to Denver to Chicago, she has been a Philadelphia rock/classic rock radio mainstay for the last 37 years. She recently stepped down from her decades spanning midday shift at WMGK to see “what's next.” Not being able to stay away from the music for long, “next” is OutsideFM.com with the freedom to truly play whatever she wants. It's a full circle back to her early days in freeform radio.
Joe Brooks, Executive Director of the Veterans Multi-Service Center, discussed their FREE comprehensive services for all veterans. Founded by veterans, today it addresses homelessness, hunger, incarceration, mental illness, drug abuse and unemployment, from housing and emergency relief, to VA benefit, lost documentation, job placement, to drug and alcohol counseling to military burials and survivor benefits at locations throughout PA, Southern NJ, and DE. No initial appointments are required, their headquarters at the corner of 4th and Florist by the entrance of the Ben Franklin Bridge is open Monday – Friday 8:30AM to 4:30PM. They ask vets to bring their DD-214 or VA Medical card for verification of military service. If a vet does not have one or has lost it, the VMC can help them obtain one, the first step to restoring or uncovering benefits. They will also work on behalf of a vet to correct a discharge status to obtain benefits. Joe noted that the VMC uncovered over 15 million in unclaimed benefits last year alone. While the majority of vets served are male, in 2014 the VMC created the Women Veterans Program (WVP) to address the growing and unique needs of Women Veterans. It offers comprehensive resources for Women Veterans and their families in a trauma-informed space, tailored to the unique needs of military women. The WVP Old City location features a clothing closet, open computer lab, lending library, children's play area and a full calendar of wellness and fellowship events. All activities, resources and events are free for military women and their children. On June 21st, Beasley Media Group station WMGK 102.9FM will host its annual Vets Radiothon to benefit the Vets Multi-Service Center. The all day broadcast will feature special guests, hourly incentives, auction items and prizes as they raise money for this center so vital for area vets. Learn more at wmgk.com. On the twelfth episode of The Rob Ellis Show, Rob speaks with Sixers in-arena announcer and WMGK classic rock disc jockey, Matt Cord. We will walk through Matt's career journey, his years 30 years in the Philadelphia music scene, and how he became the Sixers in-arena announcer. We will also discuss the current state of the Sixers and Philadelphia sports. Our big question is, will James Harden start the 2023-24 season with the Philadelphia 76ers? Harden opted-in to his player option in the offseason and has requested a trade, preferably to the Los Angeles Clippers, but the Sixers have yet to pull the trigger. With Daryl Morey and the Sixers brass pulling off a move before the season begins? After the interview, Rob will give his thoughts on the State of Philadelphia Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies playoff chances and possible trade deadline moves. He will also discuss the Eagles training camp and preview the upcoming season.
Joe Brooks, Executive Director of the Veterans Multi-Service Center, and Beasley Media Group's John DeBella, legendary Morning Host at WMGK, discussed their work on behalf of the VMC, a non-profit organization that supports veterans who are suffering from their service. The VMC offers emergency relief for Vets facing homelessness, mental health and addiction issues, aging vets needing healthcare or burial funds, and vets who have fallen out of the system who need to reconnect with their benefits. The VMC helps more than 6,500 Veterans and families annually through offices throughout the tri-state area. Their services include Veteran Employment programs, Veteran Housing Assistance with temporary and long-term shelter, Women Veterans Programs with housing and woman-to-woman counseling, and Veterans Benefit / Entitlement Assistance to help them navigate the bureaucracy. They connect vets with medical and mental care and addiction help. The Veterans Multi-Service Center was founded in 1980 by local Vietnam Veterans. Knowing John was a supporter, they approached him a few years later to help raise funds and the annual John DeBella Veteran radiothon was born, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars through his all-day broadcast and online auctions. Richona McKnight, Director of Development, and Anna Donahoe, Director of Women's and Neighborhood Programs, od City Team Chester discussed the support they offer families and individuals throughout the Delaware Valley. They discussed the widening gap between low-income wages and cost of living, and how more people than ever before are living in poverty in our community. CityTeam programs meet immediate needs while providing a path to lasting solutions. City Team Chester is part of a national organization, the only east coast chapter. They began as a soup kitchen, offering meals and expanded their services to now include programs for all ages and living conditions. For men they offer the Men's Renew Program with long term shelter and program for men in recovery from addiction, the Turning Point for Men and Connect Shelter with overnight shelter and long-term shelter for homeless men and Forward Housing, transitional housing for men who complete our programs. They also have Turning Point for Women (transitional housing for young women age 18-24 and young women age 18-24 with children. They continue to offer emergency relief, food, clothing even diapers and baby supplies. To help cut the transportation barrier they now have a mobile food pantry to help reach local residents trapped within the Chester ‘food desert.' Their holistic approach includes medical services, job coaching and parenting classes. They are proud of their Hope Café, a twice monthly meal serving families restaurant style with menu choices and volunteer hosting staff. They use these events and services as ways to establish trust and confidence in their agency. We discussed individual and business volunteering and donations, both cash and in-kind supplies are needed. Finally, we spoke of the upcoming holidays, the line to apply for assistance began hours before they opened. City Team Chester will have nearly twice as many families requesting meals and holiday clothing and toys this year. You or your company can adopt a family this year to provide the gifts and food needed. Another way to help is the annual Turkey Drop, November 22 at local participating Acme Markets. Lead by John DeBella, the staff of WMGK and Beasley Media Group will be collecting turkeys, turkey coupons and other items, as well as cash, for the families served by City Team Chester. Most people rarely wind up doing in life exactly what they’d envisioned for themselves as a teenager. But every so often, you’ll meet an exception to that rule. Matt Cord is one of them. Growing up in Philly, Matt remembers having always had two passions: sports and music. In high school, he first got a taste for announcing by doing the morning sports announcements, and he kept up his on-air appetite as a DJ for his college’s radio station, where he nurtured his love for rock and roll. Professionally starting out as the “overnight guy” for various Long Island radio stations, Matt knew where he ultimately wanted to wind up. “I was pretty determined, once I got into radio, to get back here to Philly and get back on the station I grew up with,” he says. Today, he’s achieved that and more. Now in his 24th season as the public announcer for the Philadelphia 76ers, Matt has also come full circle as the weekday DJ for his home city’s classic rock station, 102.9 WMGK. But just because he’s achieved the things his teenaged self aspired to doesn’t mean that the path to get here wasn’t a winding one. On this episode of the FUEL podcast, Chris and Matt talk about what exactly that path and its detours looked like, how Matt wound up on the cover of a Corn Flakes box, and why he’s loving his career today. What You'll Learn: How Matt found — and stuck with — a purpose The changes COVID-19 has brought to the NBA and how he’s navigating them How building a brand for yourself, and getting that brand in front of the right people, can unlock major opportunities And much more! Favorite Quote: “I just like to be around people. That’s the thing. I enjoy being around people, talking to people, learning from them, sharing experiences, being in a crowd and having a good time… I cannot wait for the fans to come back.” — Matt Cord Connect With Matt: Facebook Twitter About the FUEL Podcast:FUEL Provides an opportunity to look behind the scenes into the lives of extraordinary individuals.
