Daniel Lombardo, CEO of Volunteers of America Delaware Valley discussed their needs for the families and individuals they support throughout the year with emergency support and wrap-around services.   He spoke of the current housing crisis, especially among the elderly, acerbated by COVID; he also discussed the needs of families who often leave a residence with little more than the clothes on their backs.   Volunteers of America supports its clients with emergency shelter, for men, women and families, and in Philadelphia those with traumatic brain injuries; he described their intake and plan for putting them back to self-sufficiency through social services, job and financial training.  We discussed the impact of being homeless and how it has a lasting effect on parents and children, it's a defined trauma.  He also spoke of their programming for those returning from incarceration, veterans and persons caught up in Human Trafficking.  He reminds us that Human Trafficking is a growing crime that will only get worse with the big events coming to the Delaware Valley for the country's 250th celebration.  We talked about the needs, beyond the food pantries they offer, Volunteers of America need clothing – especially underwear – for all ages, household goods and linens.  We discussed the annual Beasley Media Group station BEN FM Radiothon for Volunteers and he asks us to support their families at the holidays.  You or your business can adopt a family to provide the necessary items they need, or you can select names and needs from their Amazon list.   They also need volunteers throughout the years.     The BEN FM radiothon is December 11th from 6A to 6P live from the Great Plaza at Cherry Hill Mall, next to Santa.  Kristen Hermann hosts with help from 6abc.  For more information about the services and programming of Volunteers of America Delaware Valley and how you can support them through donations or volunteering, go to VOADV.org.  For more details on the annual radiothon visit BENFM.com.

Sonya Bohmann,  Board Chair of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, discussed their mission of research, education and prevention and support.  We discussed new data, suicide has now become the 11th leading cause of death for adults, up from 12th, with rates for youth rising – depending on the state, to 2nd to 6th leading cause of death.  She spoke about programs aimed at communities with higher rates but less open conversation, including their L.E.T.S. Save Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention for Black and African American Communities, a presentation created by and for Black people to reduce cultural stigma and raise awareness for individuals who identify as Black or African American.  She also discussed AFSP free programing for students, from Gizmo the dog talking about ‘big feelings' to younger children, to middle and high-school programs that encourage conversation and listening skills.  She recommends the website Seize the Awkward for guidance on reaching students and young adults. We talked about 988, now in its second year. She described its funding and the teams answering calls or texts, always a trained counselor, and in many larger cities, a trained mobile response crew.  She notes that older resources, such as 741741, are still operational, too. She asked for volunteers, anyone can help, either through sharing their own lived experience or by helping with events.  Visit the AFSP website for more information. We talked about the 20th annual Out of the Darkness Walk, October 6th at a new site, The Mann Center, with its plenty of free parking and beautiful grounds.  Walk-ups are welcome, but you're encouraged to register now, as an individual or as a team.  If you can't walk, you can select a team to support for the walk website, AFSP.ORG/PHILLYWALK    Andie Summers of The Andie Summers Show on Beasley Media Group's 92.5 XTU will be the emcee. AFSP has added a Kick Off to the Walk where team captains come to pick up their t-shirts, signs, and more for the walk to start rallying their team and all can ‘Dine and Donate.'   On July 17th between 4pm-10pm, everyone is invited to the Texas Roadhouse in Montgomeryville, Downingtown, or Glen Mills, team captains can pick up their gear for the walk and everyone is able to donate through their dining check.  Bring a FLYER posted at 925XTU.com  or AFSP.ORG/PHILLYWALK's website, and 10% of your total bill at Texas Roadhouse will go back to AFSP. Joe Brooks, Executive Director of the Veterans Multi-Service Center, discussed their FREE comprehensive services for all veterans.    Founded by veterans, today it addresses homelessness, hunger, incarceration, mental illness, drug abuse and unemployment, from housing and emergency relief, to VA benefit, lost documentation, job placement, to drug and alcohol counseling to military burials and survivor benefits at locations throughout PA, Southern NJ, and DE.    No initial appointments are required, their headquarters at the corner of 4th and Florist by the entrance of the Ben Franklin Bridge is open Monday – Friday 8:30AM to 4:30PM.   They ask vets to bring their DD-214 or VA Medical card for verification of military service.  If a vet does not have one or has lost it, the VMC can help them obtain one, the first step to restoring or uncovering benefits.  They will also work on behalf of a vet to correct a discharge status to obtain benefits.   Joe noted that the VMC uncovered over 15 million in unclaimed benefits last year alone.  While the majority of vets served are male, in 2014 the VMC created the Women Veterans Program (WVP) to address the growing and unique needs of Women Veterans. It offers comprehensive resources for Women Veterans and their families in a trauma-informed space, tailored to the unique needs of military women. The WVP Old City location features a clothing closet, open computer lab, lending library, children's play area and a full calendar of wellness and fellowship events. All activities, resources and events are free for military women and their children. On June 21st, Beasley Media Group station WMGK 102.9FM will host its annual Vets Radiothon to benefit the Vets Multi-Service Center. Dan discussed their family shelters, 2 men's shelters, one medical respite shelter and one veterans' shelter.  They also have 2 men and 1 women's halfway house and other Reentry programs making the transition back to the community more seamless for individuals coming back from prison.

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 30, 2023 17:54

CityTeam programs meet immediate needs while providing a path to lasting solutions.  City Team Chester is part of a national organization, the only east coast chapter.  They began as a soup kitchen, offering meals and expanded their services to now include programs for all ages and living conditions.  For men they offer the Men's Renew Program with long term shelter and program for men in recovery from addiction, the Turning Point for Men and Connect Shelter with overnight shelter and long-term shelter for homeless men and Forward Housing, transitional housing for men who complete our programs.  They also have Turning Point for Women (transitional housing for young women age 18-24 and young women age 18-24 with children.  They continue to offer emergency relief, food, clothing even diapers and baby supplies.  To help cut the transportation barrier they now have a mobile food pantry to help reach local residents trapped within the Chester ‘food desert.'  Their holistic approach includes medical services, job coaching and parenting classes.  They are proud of their Hope Café, a twice monthly meal serving families restaurant style with menu choices and volunteer hosting staff.  They use these events and services as ways to establish trust and confidence in their agency.  We discussed individual and business volunteering and donations, both cash and in-kind supplies are needed.   Finally, we spoke of the upcoming holidays, the line to apply for assistance began hours before they opened. City Team Chester will have nearly twice as many families requesting meals and holiday clothing and toys this year.  You or your company can adopt a family this year to provide the gifts and food needed. Another way to help is the annual Turkey Drop, November 22 at local participating Acme Markets.  Lead by John DeBella, the staff of WMGK and Beasley Media Group will be collecting turkeys, turkey coupons and other items, as well as cash, for the families served by City Team Chester.   For more information on Turkey Drop, volunteering, donating or applying for help, visit CITYTEAM.ORG/CHESTER

Steve likes to run his business with a community-oriented mindset, and he says that supporting the relief effort is a major part of that.Listener Chris, an insurance agent, called in with information about what can and can not get covered during times like this. Flooding insurance is a slippery slope overall, but he encourages people to look towards the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) for details. What Makes Beasley Media Group a Good Neighbor...Beasley Media Group (BMG), LLC, a subsidiary of Beasley Broadcast Group, Inc., is a multiplatform media company providing advertising and digital marketing solutions across the United States. The company owns 62 radio properties located in large and medium markets across the country, as well as offers capabilities in audio technology, esports, podcasting, ecommerce and events. BMG's platforms reach more than 20 million consumers on a weekly basis. Our Company was founded back in 1961 when George G. Beasley, at the time a high school principal, was awarded an FCC license to build his first radio station, WPYB-AM, a daytime-only 500-watt signal, in Benson, North Carolina. Mr. Beasley was part of a small group of broadcasting pioneers who were introducing radio to smaller cities and towns throughout the country, a technology previously unavailable outside larger cities.Like many first-time FCC licensees, he turned his budding interest in radio into a full-time calling. Mr. Beasley soon sold his first station at a profit, reinvesting the proceeds into the purchase of WFMC-AM in nearby Goldsboro, North Carolina, which brought both a more powerful signal and the attraction of a larger market. To learn more about Beasley Media Group, go to: https://bbgi.com/Beasley Media SWFL20125 S. 49. How Native Advertising Can Help Solve Banner Blindness and Ad Blocker Problems

Monetization Nation Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 25, 2021 30:05

86% of consumers suffer from banner blindness. This means that they consciously or subconsciously ignore information that looks like an advertising banner, even if it contains the information they are looking for (Infolinks). Furthermore, a study on adblocker usage in the United States, found that 45% of respondents aged 15 to 25 said they used an adblocker. The same was true for 42% of respondents between 26 and 33, and respondents between 46 and 55. (Statista) Why are so many businesses focusing their advertising campaigns around advertising banners, when the vast majority of internet users are ignoring or blocking those advertising banners? With the proliferation of adblockers and users ignoring ads online, it is becoming harder for advertisers to get their messages to potential customers. One way to get around adblockers and banner blindness are through native advertising. Native as are 60% more engaging and 3x more memorable than traditional advertising (source: IHS). Todd Handy, a native advertising expert, will share his insights in today's episode. Todd Handy is the chief digital officer at Beasley Media Group, which runs 65 radio stations in 15 markets. He is an endurance athlete who has done LoToJa, a 206-mile race from Logan, UT to Jackson Hole, WY, 11 years in a row. He was the CEO of Intermountain Hearing Centers and was a sales manager at AOL during its heyday. What is native advertising? Native advertising is the use of paid ads that look, feel, and function like the media format in which they appear. They are often found in social media feeds or as recommended or sponsored content in the content feed of a website. Native ads usually are valuable pieces of content or features that are part of the native functionality of the site and don't really look like ads. Consumers look at native ads 53% more than display ads, and they create an 18% increase in purchase intent (Source: Outbrain.com). Why Use Native Advertising Native advertising has been a tectonic shift away from banner ads, partly because native advertising helps solve the problems with banner blindness and ad blockers. Native advertising provides value first with the information it gives, and as such can help establish the credibility of the advertiser. Contrast that to banner ads which generally focus on persuading users to click and then buy their product or service, before the advertiser has provided any value to the users.  Success with Native Advertising A little while ago, Todd helped work on an article called “10 Ways to Know You're a Utah Driver.” This article was sponsored by a personal injury attorney. It's difficult for personal injury attorneys to advertise because we don't need them until we've had an injury. Because of this, PI attorneys are constantly trying to build their brand so that people know who to contact when they get in an accident. The article this PI attorney sponsored went viral because of its content, taking the attorney along for the ride. This virality helped the attorney build their brand and get their name out there. In 2013 while Todd and I were working at Deseret Digital Media, our sponsored content or native advertising was taking off. We had the opportunity to go to a large conference with many big companies. This conference enabled us to be at the forefront of seeing what was working and what wasn't in the advertising world. Todd also put together an entire conference around sponsored advertising. AOL and CompuServe Todd worked for AOL during its most popular time. AOL started out with an hourly model. Users paid based on how many hours they used AOL's services. When AOL switched to a flat-rate monthly model, their customers suddenly increased the amount of time they spent using their dial-up service. The problem was that this was in the days of dial-up internet, and with the increased usage their customers frequently encountered busy signals. CompuServe, one of AOL's competitors, decided to take advantage of this situation. A 30-second Super Bowl ad that year spent almost all of the ad playing the busy signal from AOL. Then at the end of the ad CompuServe gave their phone number: 1-888-NOT-BUSY. Although this ad does not fit the description of native advertising. Compuserve created an entertaining, memorable and unexpected ad aimed at solving a pain point of their target audience.  Shifting Businesses with Tectonic Shifts: Analog to Digital Todd was the CEO of Intermountain Hearing Centers, a business founded on an antiquated model of advertising. People who use hearing aids are usually older people who would go to a phone book to find hearing aid companies. The internet and specifically Google changed how people search for companies and their products and services. Todd and his associates became very good at bidding on key search terms related to hearing aids, so in a Google search, they were one of the first companies shown in the results. They took a business that was founded on an antiquated model of yellow page advertising and transformed the company through the tectonic shift of digital advertising.  Focusing on Low Prices vs Target Market Todd and I talked about some of the successful examples of credibility marketing he has seen. There seems to be a difference between brands like Walmart that focus on having low prices and brands such as Allstate or Home Depot that focus on their target market. Allstate's slogan is "You're in Good Hands with Allstate." They know, being an insurance company, it is important to their customers that they feel taken care of, so they strive to do that. Home Depot's slogan is all about doers because they know that their customers want to get things done. So their focus is all about helping them do more. In our marketing, we can choose whether we want to focus on low prices or our customers.  Tips for Setting Up Recurring Revenue  (Source: blog.fusebill.com) So how do we implement subscription business models or recurring revenue streams? Todd gives us a couple of tips. Todd had an opportunity to build an inside sales team. One of the things he coached this team on was not saying, “that's $500,” to the advertiser. Instead, he told them to say, “that's $500 monthly.” It's essentially the same thing, but it immediately sets up an ongoing transaction. This monthly cost also allowed them to set up a system to charge their credit card monthly instead of calling them every month to complete the transaction. because they told the advertisers upfront that it was a monthly cost. Todd and his team let them cancel at any time. With these strategies, their recurring revenue increased every year. Key Takeaways Thank you so much Todd for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: Native advertising may be a great way to solve the mounting problems with ad blockers and banner blindness.  Consider using native advertising to provide value first before trying to sell. Native advertising can help build a sponsor's branding and credibility. As CompuServe did with their ad, we can take advantage of the situation around our businesses and niches and turn it into something unexpected and entertaining to help promote our products and services. When tectonic shifts happen, we must shift our businesses to match those tectonic shifts and leverage them. Consider which focus will help our businesses best succeed: low prices or focusing on providing top-quality products and services to our target market. We often cannot have both.  We can establish our revenue models to be immediately recurring with a few simple words to our customers. Tom Brady and Bill Belichick needed each other to win as much as they did together. But now that Brady's won a seventh ring with Tampa Bay, the debate is starting to get silly. The whole Brady-Belichick debate is the central topic of this week's episode, but first Matt and Ty banter about sandwiches, weird vacation spots, and bad smells that they actually enjoy. Then they dive into the Super Bowl and how it felt to watch Brady and Rob Gronkowski light it up and win for another team, as well as where things stand now with the Patriots in the "competition" (13:39). Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have been anointed the next GOAT and the next dynasty far too early (18:32). We go through some of the craziest takes we've heard as the Brady-Belichick debate spirals out of control (39:20). Belichick desperately needs to find another good quarterback so he can prove the Patriots weren't all about Brady, but the Patriots also have plenty of other moves to make on the roster (47:39). They close out the show with some Bruins talk and a very positive outlook on the team's youth movement so far this season (1:16:53). Subscribe to SideLines! Tom Brady is back in the big game and one of the worst Patriots debates in recent memory keeps getting worse. But first, the guys dive into the NHL's COVID problem and how it affects the Bruins (21:52). The B's are coming off an epic comeback win over the Capitals. Matt & Ty go over the team's biggest improvements at both forward and defense at this point in the season (26:17). Finally, it's Super Bowl time - more specifically, time to clap back at Danny Amendola for his hot takes about the Patriots and Bill Belichick (51:00). Amendola and former Patriot Willie McGinest have two completely different perceptions of "The Patriot Way" - and what even is, the Patriot Way, if anything? (58:27) The Patriots continue to have new quarterback options emerge in both free agency and on the trade market, but is there anyone they can get without a major flaw? Could TD Garden possibly let some fans back in this year? Can anyone bring up the idea without a backlash? The question is high on the minds of Matt Dolloff and Ty Anderson, who are in disbelief of the idea that the Patriots could start next season in an empty Gillette Stadium or that the Bruins and Celtics may not let fans into the Garden until after the summer. So many other arenas have figured out how to safely shuffle fans in and out, so why can't New England? Not to mention all the other businesses that are restricted or closed. Most importantly: is there room for a nuanced discussion about this at all? But beyond the COVID crisis, Matt and Ty have plenty of hockey to talk about. So they spend over an hour discussing the Bruins and the National Hockey League. The temporary realignment of the division should keep some of its features for next season. Why haven't Jake DeBrusk or Anders Bjork taken steps forward? Are either of them going to be an answer for the Bruins' top-6? Because they need to be. Ty believes the Bruins could be planning to sign a big-time free agent ... in 2022. The guys also get into the Flyers and the challenge they present for the Bruins in their division, as the teams get ready to face off on Thursday. Jakub Voracek launched an epic burn at a reporter that he doesn't seem to like very much. It sounds like they're about to wrap up, but Matt and Ty take one last detour into the NFL. Matt is finally rooting for Tom Brady and the Buccaneers to win the Super Bowl, but he wasn't necessarily rooting against them. Ty is hoping the Patriots really do load up for the 2021 season, considering the cap space that they're projected to have. Subscribe to SideLines! Is the Lamar Jackson poop saga the most iconic sports story of 2020?   Matt Dolloff couldn't help but ask Ty Anderson, who wrote a column on Jackson's unfortunate bowel troubles, if he had any poop stories of his own. Things go a little off the rails, and it's not exactly for the squeamish.   But eventually the guys segue into discussions on the worst qualities in sports team owners, COVID shutdowns in Massachusetts, and the emerging name/logo controversies in the NHL. But they do talk about actual sports, including the latest with the Bruins and free-agent winger Mike Hoffman.   Where to get the Sports Hub Sidelines:   Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3cy8sRG   Google Podcasts: http://bit.ly/38pPKIG   Spotify: https://spoti.fi/38n1JGV   Disclaimer: This podcast contains language and content intended for mature audiences. Matt Dolloff and Ty Anderson are back for a Thanksgiving edition of the Sports Hub Sidelines podcast. The big long weekend is on the horizon and Matt & Ty are indeed fans of Thanksgiving, so some turkey talk is a must. The guys go over their favorite things about Thanksgiving to start the podcast, and why debating the best and worst side dishes is a pointless exercise. Eventually the guys segue into the Patriots and their disappointing loss to the Texans. What did that loss prove about the team? And what are their chances of beating Kyler Murray and the Cardinals? Matt & Ty mix in some banter about fake Patriots fans and AC/DC before switching gears to hockey. Connor McDavid's new house is weird-looking and creepy, so the guys have some thoughts on that. The Bruins have re-signed Jake DeBrusk, but is the organization taking the right approach in the winger's development? Finally, the guys pay tribute to former Bruin Johnny Boychuk on the day it's announced that he will be forced to retire due to an eye injury. To close out the Thanksgiving episode, Matt circles back for an interesting thought: if you were in charge of Thanksgiving, what would you serve? Both guys are swapping out the turkey for something else, with some of their own original choices mixed in. Matt and Ty are back for a new episode and they're sticking to hockey, dammit. The NHL is going public with its goals and plans for the 2020-21 season, which could include a temporary realignment of teams based on geographical location. What would that entail and what does it mean for the Bruins and the league? Plus, the NHL is preparing for the possibility of rotating hub city schedules, to allow teams to travel home and be with their families as opposed to spending too much time in a bubble. Switching gears to the Patriots ... why are so many people calling for "tanking," when it hasn't proven to be an effective strategy? The guys discuss what the Patriots really need to worry about at the draft and at quarterback. How alive are the Patriots' playoff hopes at this point? The Ravens are coming to town while Lamar Jackson hasn't been quite the same player. Could this be a trap game for Baltimore and a sneaky-winnable game for the Pats? The guys go over what the Pats need to do - and what other teams need to do to help them - in order to climb back into the playoffs by the end of the season. This episode is titled after Buzz's podcast called Healthy Paranoia. We spoke about his past in radio working at legendary stations like doing weekends at WNEW and programming legendary WZLX. From there we dove into radio's future, podcast strategy, why Beasley Media Group got involved with e-Sports, and defining innovation overall. His role at Beasley began evolving back in 2016 when Greater Media was sold to Beasley. If you are wondering where radio is going - this is a good listen. Also take the time to subscribe to his podcast which features conversations about leadership, innovation and change in fields that are associated with radio. There's also a 5 part interview with historian Doris Kerns Goodwin that I thoroughly enjoyed, and was played out in the type of room I imagined; surrounded by cozy chairs and a lot of books.Buzz touched on a few podcast initiatives at the company including Twisted Philly and Wrestling Inside the Ropes. You can connect to both shows by clicking on the links. I also brought up Checkpoint Radio is a part of the e-Sports initiative I referenced. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxNLogic

Heather Monahan joins us for this episode of the Megna Method and it was a complete joy having her on the show! Heather is very successful with the Beasley Media Group and has initiated a movement to empower others, especially young women. It's always a pleasure to have a REAL conversation with someone who is genuinely humble, kind, passionate, and caring. Heather knows who she is and she completely embraces herself, with the knowledge that she didn't always feel this way and she still has room to grow. And the fact that she is willing to admit this and is excited to share her life story with others, in the hopes of inspiring them, is just incredible. Enjoy! P.S. Be sure to follow Heather on all social media platforms: @heathermonahan #bossinheels
