Grief can have a profound effect on our bodies and our minds. Grief may diminish our health due to our literal heart ache. What is it about grief that makes it so difficult to work through and support others as they work through it? Grief equals vulnerability. Vulnerability and expressing difficult emotions are something that we're often discouraged from doing and may make others uncomfortable to witness. But to heal grief and process it positively, vulnerability is exactly what we need to embrace as both the griever and the supporter. As a culture, we often do not promote healthy and reasonable reactions to loss and grief because we are afraid of our own vulnerability. Grief is natural and doesn’t have a time limit. Loss takes on many forms and effects everyone differently. There is a possibility of regression during the grieving process. It’s okay to cry A LOT and OFTEN. It’s also okay to give yourself time to heal and show yourself grace throughout your journey. Allowing another human being the space to grieve and share their vulnerability helps them heal and helps us understand what a healthy grief process looks like. Facing grief and accepting vulnerability may also prevent lapsing into long lasting depression. Being vulnerable is a demonstration of strength and self-confidence, not weakness.
Grief can have a profound effect on our bodies and our minds. Grief may diminish our health due to our literal heart ache. Physical symptoms of grief include extreme fatigue, restlessness, stomach aches, headaches, nausea, and difficulty eating and sleeping. Grief increases inflammation in the body and weakens our immune system, leaving us vulnerable to illness. Psychological symptoms include difficulty concentrating, sadness, anger, irritability, anxiety, and feeling disoriented at times. Depression is not a normal part of grief, but a complication of it. To distinguish normal grief from depression, it's important to understand the patterns. Normal grief occurs in waves or bursts and then is followed by periods of respite. A chronic low mood and feelings of despair may indicate a major depressive episode. Another indicator of normal grief compared to a more serious depressive state is whether you're able to be consoled, maintain a sense of humor, and your self-esteem. A depressed state includes a struggle with feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and a lack of engagement in activities that previously brought you pleasure or joy. It is important to honor the grieving process whether it begins immediately or takes time to develop. Everyone grieves differently. The most helpful ways to work through and overcome grief are allowing time to heal, making self-care a priority, and accepting support among family and friends while avoiding self-isolation.
Our bodies send us signals and messages, do you listen to yours? For years, I've had an eczema patch on my chest above my heart. Lotions and ointments prescribed by a dermatologist didn't seem to help. I wondered if my body was reacting to something in my environment. The first thing that crossed my mind was metal. Was I allergic? No, that can't be a thing. I let it go. I didn't listen to my body. Then I met Kristina David and I learned that metal allergies are a real thing and a new adventure began!

Most people know our feelings influence our movement, BUT movement or our lack of it also influences our feelings! When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. Endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain to naturally reduce pain and trigger positive feelings. Endorphins are known as one of the 4 “happy hormones.” The benefits of incorporating movement into our daily lives are: Reduced anxiety, making the brain’s “fight or flight” system less reactive. Reduced symptoms of depression. Improved sleep. Weight loss and weight management. Reduced risk of disease. The mind, body connection is intimate and beautifully orchestrated. Movement creates a more positive mindset, and a positive mindset enables our bodies to heal and stay healthy.

Self-sabotaging behavior occurs when it creates problems in our daily lives and interferes with achieving our goals. Self-sabotage frequently shows up in reaching weight loss goals and can include procrastination and comfort eating. People aren't always aware that they are sabotaging themselves. Connecting the behavior to the common scenarios and influencers is a good way to shine a light on this limiting mindset. It is possible to overcome almost any form of self-sabotage. There are three scenarios of self-sabotaging behavior and two directions which may influence our tendencies toward engaging in unhealthy and self-destructive actions.
Tune in to this week's episode to learn about the impact of stress on the body. Stress is a primary trigger for emotional eating and even at a chronic low level, stress takes a toll on our bodies. Anxiety disorders affect one in five adults in the US. No matter how stress and anxiety show up in your life, if ignored the effects can be debilitating. Weight loss is a huge area of concern for many people in this country but what may not be understood is that stress has a major impact on success in losing weight and maintaining a healthy metabolism.
Tune in to this week's episode to create awareness... Emotional eating and self-sabotage are protective behaviors many women use to comfort ourselves and hide, often, at the expense of our health. There are four common phases in an emotional eating cycle: trigger, comfort, remorse, and punishment. Awareness of this coping strategy helps create a more empowered mindset to find healthier coping methods. Women are more likely to maintain a healthy lifestyle if they acknowledge and heal their emotional wounds. Replacing the traditional weight loss mindset of judgement, deprivation, and resentment with a new mindset of courage and curiosity is more sustainable for achieving and maintaining a positive body image long term.
