What happens when the womb is treated as separate from the rest of women's health? In this episode of hol+, Dr. Taz sits down with Dr. Kemi Doll, double board-certified gynecologic oncologist, equity scientist, researcher, coach, and author of A Terrible Strength: The Hidden Crisis of the Black Womb and Your Survival Guide to Healing, for a powerful conversation about womb health, uterine cancer, fibroids, HRT, health equity, and why so many women are still being taught to normalize symptoms that deserve care.Together, they explore why womb health is not only about pregnancy, fertility, or menopause, but a lifelong part of women's physical, emotional, hormonal, and whole-body health. Dr. Doll shares how her grandmother's death in childbirth, her mother's near-death experience, and her own work as a gynecologic cancer surgeon shaped her mission to bring the uterus back into the center of women's health.Dr. Taz and Dr. Doll also discuss why uterine cancer is rising, why Black women are twice as likely to die after a uterine cancer diagnosis, and how gaps in research, screening, and diagnostic tools may leave women of color especially vulnerable. They unpack the role of ultrasound, endometrial thickness, post-menopausal bleeding, and why women need clearer conversations with their providers when something feels off. This conversation also takes a closer look at the explosion of hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, and the questions every woman with a uterus should be asking. Dr. Doll explains why estrogen without proper progesterone protection can increase uterine cancer risk, why some women may not understand the role progesterone plays, and why monitoring the uterus matters when using hormones. If you're listening to this and thinking, “I know something is off in my body, but I don't know where to start,” join the Circle here:

In Part 4 of Detox in a Toxic World, we take an evidence-based look at detox supplements, cleanses, binders, protocols, and some of the most common products being sold in the name of detox. From milk thistle, NAC, glutathione, and sulforaphane to activated charcoal, clay binders, detox teas, colon cleanses, and coffee enemas, this episode breaks down what may actually be supportive, what has limited evidence, and what may be harmful. We also talk about how to think more clearly about “detox supplements” versus supplements that support the body's natural detox pathways, why dramatic reactions are often mistaken for healing, and how to stay grounded in physiology rather than marketing.Companion Guide: drmaryellawood.com/guides
If you've heard of the Autoimmune Protocol but felt like it was too restrictive to even try — or you've done it and wondered if you were doing it right — this episode is worth your time. I sat down with Mickey Trescott, one of the key people behind AIP, to talk about her new book The New AIP. We get into the actual clinical research (IBD, Hashimoto's, and RA studies), what the results really showed, and the newly formalized Modified AIP pathway that makes the protocol far more accessible than most people realize. We also bust the biggest myth about AIP — that it's just a restrictive diet — and talk about what the protocol actually involves beyond food, how long you should stay in elimination, when to troubleshoot if it's not working, and what the long game looks like when you're living with a chronic condition. Mickey also shares her own recent health setback — a new psoriatic arthritis diagnosis 15 years into her journey — and what she actually did about it. Practical, research-backed, and refreshingly honest. For the complete show notes, links and transcripts, visit inspiredliving.show/248

On this episode of This Week in Pharmacy, we bring together three powerful voices shaping the future of pharmacy, independent practice, functional medicine, and healthcare transformation. First, we welcome Kris Rhea, MBA, Contributing Editor with Dispense Times, a digital publication dedicated to supporting independent community pharmacy owners across the United States. Kris brings a business-focused perspective on pharmacy operations, growth strategy, workflow efficiency, data-driven decision-making, and market positioning. His work with Dispense Times helps independent pharmacists navigate today's rapidly changing healthcare landscape, including PBM pressures, evolving patient expectations, regulatory challenges, and the need for sustainable business models that keep local pharmacies strong. We also speak with James Maskell, founder of Evolution of Medicine, an organization built to inspire, equip, and unite functional and integrative medicine practitioners. Evolution of Medicine provides education, practice-building resources, and community for clinicians who are working to build thriving practices rooted in whole-person care. James brings a national perspective on the movement toward functional medicine, community-based care, prevention, and new models that empower practitioners to better serve patients beyond the limitations of conventional healthcare. Our third guest is Marina Buksov, PharmD, a pharmacist, herbalist, educator, podcast host, and holistic health consultant. After earning her PharmD from St. John's University and graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2013, Marina entered pharmacy eager to serve patients, but quickly recognized that traditional allopathic pharmacy did not fully align with her deeper calling to help people thrive through prevention, root-cause care, plant medicine, and sustainable wellness strategies. Her experience behind the pharmacy counter and as a patient herself inspired her to pursue health coaching, nutrition, functional medicine, and clinical herbalism. Today, Marina helps pharmacists and healthcare professionals explore natural-minded career paths and build meaningful work that bridges pharmacology, herbal therapeutics, and holistic care. Together, this episode explores where pharmacy is headed: independent pharmacy survival, business model innovation, functional medicine, patient-centered care, pharmacist reinvention, and the growing demand for healthcare professionals who can connect science, prevention, and real-world practice. Listen to This Week in Pharmacy on the Pharmacy Podcast Network. Pharmacy's future is being built by those willing to challenge the current model, support independent practice, and expand the role of pharmacists as trusted healthcare providers.
Perimenopause, Insulin Resistance, and Persistent Muscle & Joint Pain: A Functional Medicine Framework: Nutritionist Leyla Muedin discusses perimenopausal musculoskeletal symptoms—new or persistent joint pain, muscle aches, and tendon problems—and highlights a Clinician's Journal article by physical therapist Tara Moore proposing insulin resistance screening in perimenopausal musculoskeletal care. She explains that declining estradiol during the menopausal transition can worsen insulin signaling, increase visceral fat, and reduce insulin sensitivity, affecting skeletal muscle recovery and potentially contributing to tendinopathies and poor or short-lived responses to localized treatments like PT. The framework emphasizes assessing systemic metabolic contributors (e.g., sedentary behavior, high-carbohydrate nutrition patterns, PCOS, central weight gain, stress, sleep disruption) and addressing mediators such as inflammation and impaired glucose utilization. She suggests integrating metabolic risk assessment, sleep and stress strategies, resistance training, and interdisciplinary referrals, arguing that nutrition and supplementation—especially a low-carb approach—may improve recovery and pain outcomes.

Is Functional Medicine truly addressing the root causes of Chronic Illness or has it started falling into the same symptom-focused patterns as conventional healthcare? In this episode of the Health Detective Podcast, Michele Scarlet sits down with Reed Davis, founder of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN), to explore the philosophy, principles, and clinical framework that have helped thousands of practitioners and clients uncover the hidden stressors behind chronic health challenges. Drawing on nearly three decades of experience, Reed shares how FDN was created to focus on Root Cause Healing rather than diagnoses, symptoms, or condition-specific protocols. He explains why so many people continue to struggle with Gut Health issues, Hormone Imbalance, Burnout, Brain Fog, Anxiety, fatigue, and other chronic symptoms despite being told their labs are “normal.” Together, Michele and Reed discuss the concept of Metabolic Chaos, the limitations of both conventional and Functional Medicine models, and why lasting Health Transformation requires looking at the whole person rather than isolated symptoms. You'll learn: What Metabolic Chaos really means and why it matters Why hidden stressors are often the true drivers of chronic symptoms How Functional Lab Testing helps identify healing opportunities The FDN D.R.E.S.S. framework: Diet, Rest, Exercise, Stress Reduction, and Supplementation Why supplements should support not replace the foundations of health Reed's perspective on peptides, biohacking, detox protocols, and wellness trends The role of Natural Healing, Functional Wellness, and Holistic Health in long-term outcomes Why practitioners must focus on healing principles rather than chasing symptoms Reed also shares how FDN evolved into a global Practitioner Training program and why Health Coaches, Functional Health Practitioners, alternative medicine practitioners, and wellness professionals are increasingly seeking a more comprehensive approach to helping clients achieve better outcomes. Whether you're working to improve your own health or exploring a future as an FDN Practitioner, this episode offers a powerful look at the framework, mindset, and healing principles that continue to define Functional Diagnostic Nutrition. If you're passionate about Functional Health, Root Cause Health, Practitioner Education, Functional Diagnostics, and helping people create lasting change, this conversation is one you won't want to miss.

What happens when your body starts to heal, but your mind is still trapped in survival mode? In this episode of hol+, Dr. Taz sits down with Amy Kurtz, certified health coach, patient advocate, speaker, and author "But You Look Fine", for a powerful conversation about chronic illness, Lyme disease, medical gaslighting, nervous system trauma, and what it really means to heal.Together, they explore Amy's 20+ year journey through unexplained pain, chronic symptoms, misdiagnosis, and the search for answers that finally led to a diagnosis of late-stage neurological Lyme disease and co-infections. Amy shares what it was like to be told her labs were normal while knowing something was deeply wrong in her body, and how years of invalidation shaped her relationship with her health, her identity, and her trust in herself.Dr. Taz and Amy also discuss why so many people live in the “gray zone” between sick and well, especially when symptoms are invisible, complex, or hard to explain. They unpack why normal labs do not always mean optimal health, why Lyme disease can be missed for years, and how chronic illness can impact relationships, career, emotional safety, and the nervous system. This conversation offers a grounded and hopeful look at what happens after illness, when the body may be improving but the mind and nervous system are still bracing for the next crash. Amy introduces her concept of Medical Trauma Brain, or MTB, which describes the anxiety, hypervigilance, fear, and survival patterns that can remain after chronic illness, cancer, stroke, chronic pain, or any major health crisis. If you're listening to this and thinking, “I know something is off in my body, but I don't know where to start,” join the Circle here:

High cholesterol is one of the most common reasons people are told they're at risk for heart disease. But what if cholesterol isn't the root problem? What if it's actually a signal of deeper metabolic dysfunction—and focusing on the number alone causes us to miss what's really driving cardiovascular risk? In today's episode, we explore a functional medicine approach to cholesterol and heart health, including: Why high cholesterol is often a downstream effect of insulin resistance, inflammation, and metabolic dysfunction The surprising role sugar, refined carbohydrates, and ultra-processed foods play in driving unhealthy cholesterol patterns How healthy fats, protein, fiber, and gut health influence cholesterol regulation and cardiovascular risk The nutrition and lifestyle changes that can improve metabolic health—and begin shifting key biomarkers in as little as 10 days When it comes to cholesterol, the better question isn't always, "How do I lower this number?" It's, "Why is it elevated in the first place?" By addressing the root causes—from blood sugar imbalance and inflammation to diet, movement, sleep, and stress—you can improve not just your cholesterol, but the underlying metabolic health that drives long-term cardiovascular risk. Since that time, she's never looked back and has helped 100's of clients heal through the functional medicine lens. One of Cindy's super powers is to research, connect the dots, listen and to teach. If you've been doing everything right and still feel exhausted, anxious, and like your body just won't cooperate — this episode is for you. I sat down with Dr. Scott Sherr, a board-certified internal medicine physician and COO of Troscriptions, to talk about the sympathetic spiral: a chronic fight-or-flight loop most people don't even know they're in. And here's what surprised me most — you don't have to feel stressed to be stuck in it. We get into why your cellular energy and your anxiety are locked in a loop, what mitochondrial dysfunction actually means for your daily life, and how a specific sequence of support can help you finally start feeling better. We also go deep on methylene blue — the history, how it works, the right dosing range, and the sourcing and safety details that most people skip (including who should absolutely not use it). Plus: why GABA deficiency is so common, how to calm your nervous system without sedating yourself, and why sleep is a full-day practice — not just a bedtime routine. "Insurance is there for when you're sick or when something goes incredibly wrong. It's not there for prevention."The traditional healthcare system is designed to treat you when you are sick. You go to a doctor for 15 minutes, get a basic blood panel, and if you are within the "reference range," you are told you are fine. The goal of this system is to get you from -1 back to 0.My guest this week is Prabhat Dhar, the Head of Growth for Superpower, a new platform that wants to take you from 0 to 100. Rather than treating late-stage diagnoses, Superpower provides comprehensive biomarker testing, looking at advanced metrics like ApoB, Fasting Insulin, and HSCRP, to detect diseases like cardiovascular risk or metabolic dysfunction up to a decade before they materialize as claims. In this episode, we discuss how Superpower translates complex biological data into a highly personalized, AI-driven action plan for your health (and your lifestyle). We also dive into why employers must stop relying on health insurance carriers to manage wellness, the power of decoupling proactive screening from the traditional system, and how to start bending the cost curve by focusing on root-cause analysis instead of late-stage symptom management. If you want to know what the future of employee health benefits looks like when it's built on individual biology instead of group claims data, this episode is for you.Thank you to our 2026 sponsors!ParetoHealth: ParetoHealth empowers midsize employers with a long-term solution to reduce volatility and lower overall health benefits costs. In Part 2 of Detox in a Toxic World, we move from understanding the problem to actually doing something about it. This episode is all about reducing exposures to toxins, starting in the place where many of us have the most control: the home. We explore the idea of the home as a health ecosystem and walk through practical ways to lower your total toxic burden without falling into fear, perfectionism, or overwhelm. We cover simple low-cost first steps, food storage and cooking tools, pantry and food choices, air quality, mold and moisture, water filtration, cleaning products, personal care products, and even the role of furniture, textiles, and clothing in shaping everyday exposure. This episode is designed to help you think more clearly about what matters most, where to start, and how small changes in the home can add up over time.Companion Guide: drmaryellawood.com/guides
Could your home be the reason you're not getting better?I sat down with Paul Kealey, founder of EcoBuilt, to talk about something most of us never think to question — the air inside our homes. Paul has spent nearly 25 years in construction, and what he shares might change how you see your living space entirely. We get into why new homes aren't automatically healthier (studies suggest over 25% have hidden mold inside the walls), how bedroom CO2 levels can hit 5x what's outside — quietly wrecking your sleep and your body's ability to detox overnight — and why "energy efficient" and "healthy" are not the same thing. Paul also walks through three tests any homeowner can run right now to find out if their home is working against them: a mold dust swab test, a CO2 and humidity monitor, and an energy audit. If you're dealing with an autoimmune condition, chronic fatigue, or symptoms that never quite have an explanation, this one is for you. Over the years, we have spoken with scores of healthcare experts about chronic illness. Many of them attribute the problems to inflammation, which is after all a natural response to infection or injury. But not everyone has a system for locating and addressing the source of the inflammation. If you want to treat the cause, […]
Registered dietitian nutritionist Leyla Muedin discusses the growing interest in biological age versus chronological age and explains that biological aging is modifiable through consistent lifestyle choices. She outlines common measurement tools and biomarkers, including epigenetic clocks (DNA methylation), telomere length, VO2 max, inflammatory markers, grip strength, and muscle mass, noting that genetics account for only about 25–40% of biological aging variation. Key interventions include regular aerobic and resistance exercise, protein-adequate nutrition to preserve muscle and prevent sarcopenia (with whey protein and leucine-rich foods noted), improved sleep, stress management, reducing processed foods and visceral fat, and lowering chronic inflammation (CRP, IL-6). She also reviews hormetic stressors such as sauna use and mentions red/near-infrared light and sun exposure without sunglasses. Leyla shares client examples showing biological age can worsen or improve, and encourages repeat testing after lifestyle changes.
