This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, InsideTracker, and HigherDOSE.Eighty-eight percent of people are metabolically unhealthy, and since the 1920s we've shamed them into believing it's their fault—that they should just eat fewer calories and exercise more. But the real culprit is sugar and the processed foods that contain it. The majority of foods on our market shelves contain insane amounts of added sugar and high-fructose corn syrup—ingredients that literally slow down our metabolism and turn on our internal fat storage switch. That means we have the power to turn that switch off by choosing to use food as medicine. Today, I'm excited to talk to Dr. Richard Johnson about how our biological fat storage process works and what we can do to positively affect it. Dr. Richard Johnson is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado in Denver and has been a practicing physician and clinical scientist for over 25 years. He is internationally recognized for his seminal work on the role of sugar and its component fructose, in obesity and diabetes. His work has also suggested a fundamental role for uric acid (which is generated during fructose metabolism) in metabolic syndrome. He previously authored The Sugar Fix with Timothy Gower in 2008, and The Fat Switch in 2012. His new book, Nature Wants Us to Be Fat was just released. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, InsideTracker, and HigherDOSE.Rupa Health is a place where Functional Medicine practitioners can access more than 2,000 specialty lab tests from over 20 labs like DUTCH, Vibrant America, Genova, and Great Plains. We discuss the pros and cons of medical marijuana, CBD, and how each form of consumption causes a different effect to the body. David emphasizes that much like breeds of dogs or cats, there are many breeds (strains) of cannabis. There's no one-plant-cures-all; one must really dive into their intentions when dealing with cannabis. Many times, people tend to dive into the world of cannabis and end up getting either extremely overwhelmed or underwhelmed by the dosage of whatever form they chose to consume because they lacked the education.  It's extremely important to talk with your health care provider to see what the best options are to curate the formula that will be the most effective option for you. It was a certainly a pleasure to chat about these stigmatized topics because we live in a new age and it's about time we start opening up to different options when it comes to healing the mind, body, and spirit. I didn't focus on my health prior to having my children and my postpartum period was rough. Both my kids have food sensitivities, asthma, ear infections, ADHD and more. It may feel like we need to rush to the fertility clinic to get pregnant ASAP. After all, the fertility industry tells us that we're too old, our eggs are too old and that the only option for pregnancy success is IVF. I believe that knowledge is power. You are in a very powerful place right now to really focus on your health and address missed healing opportunities that conventional medicine may tell you are normal. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:    Maria: Hi and thank you so much for everything you do and all your time. My question is this. Back in October of 2020 I had my gallbladder removed. Prior to having my gallbladder removed I had amazing bowel movements sorry for the tmi. I also never had a uti. I'm 46 by the way. After I had my gallbladder removed I started to experience that my bowel movements were starting to slow down. Then I had my first UTI in December of 2020. Then I started to develop adult acne little white pimples all over my face my neck my scalp even my ears. Then my bowel movement started to slow down even more. And I got another UTI in April of 2021. My bowel movements continue to slow down. I try to eat ery healthy I eat healthier than most people. And am very intentional with my health. And I try to do all the right things and take all the right supplements. But I am consistently seeing that my constipation has gotten worse. And my acne has gotten worse. And I have gotten another UTI recently in the month of february. Most recently I also noticed that I get full faster and I fell like I'm so stuffed I also have more gas and burping. What would you recommend.   Rebekah: Hello Dr. Cabral. I am 39 years old and over the past year I have been having a cluster of symptoms. GERD, headache, vertigo, off balance, fatigue, muscle spasms, numbness and tingling in my hands, feet, tongue, lips. I had an MRI that showed non-specific white matter changes and was referred to a neurologist. An EMG was done but I have not gotten results. I am not a fan of the neurologist I was referred to and am looking for a more holistic approach to my symptoms. I suspected I was having mold toxicity. We have moved out of our home and into a brand new house but my symptoms have not gone away. I changed my diet by eliminating dairy, gluten and going organic.I did have vitamin b12 checked and it was normal. I am currently on your CBO protocol. Any advice on things I should be testing for or foods to eliminate? This is very frustrating and I wish I could feel normal again and get to the bottom of this. I am so glad I found your podcast and thank you for all that you do.   Alicja: Hi Dr. Cabral, First I quickly want to say that I love your podcast and wish I discovered it sooner. Trying to catch up with all older episodes since I learn so much from you. Thank you for all you do. My question is about thyroid. I recently found out I have hypothyroidism and Hashimoto. I'm against taking hormones. How can I rebalance my thyroid naturally? I have a naturopathic doctor who mentioned to me LDN (low dose naltrexone) that for some people can reverse autoimmune conditions. Any thoughts on LDN? Is it worth trying or would you recommend other, more natural approach? (I'm also dealing with GI issues I'm addressing and I read that LDN may also be helpful to my gut issues)   Gordon: Hello Dr Cabral, my issue is what seems to be a chronic problem with lightheadedness/dizziness. Has been going on for a year plus, happens every day now, sometimes several times a day. I've had MRI's, thorough eye exams (thought to be related to ocular migraines) and ear exams - all testing returned within “normal” limits. I am in my early 70's, take no medications, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy diet. Typically have a low heart rate and low blood pressure. Any ideas as to cause, next steps? Any help is appreciated. Thanks for all you do!   Adam: Dr. Cabral, Many thanks for all that you do. You have truly been a blessing! My questions are related to anti-aging and Equilife's new Longevity Line, which I am very excited about! What is your current anti-aging supplement protocol? Do you take cell boost and inflamma soothe? If so what dosage? Are there any other anti-aging supplements that you use outside of equilife? On episode 1507 you mention that you have been taking nicotinamide riboside (NR) for three years but it was not included in cell boost. Instead nicotinamide mononucleutide (NMN) was included. Do you prefer NMN over NR? Did you know that there are over 100 healthy foods rich in prebiotics? Prebiotics help feed the good bacteria in our gut and have been shown to reduce inflammation, repair leaky gut syndrome, bolster short-chain fatty acid production, improve constipation and mood, prevent migraines, and so much more. While I advise to eat the widest array possible from the food list we provide, I also exercise caution as consuming too many prebiotic-rich foods (especially with a sensitive gut) may increase symptoms of gas, bloating, and diarrhea. We're digging into why including your partner on the fertility journey sets you up for success. Both the male and female partner needs to focus on preconception health to improve pregnancy success. It's not about the woman changing everything in her life and no one has even completed a semen analysis. What we find is that most male partners are very supportive. However, they may not know how to optimize pregnancy success. Or we see women making all the changes and nagging their partner to take their supplements or change their diet. This leads to frustration for both parties. How do we join together to create a solid foundation so that we can strengthen our relationship as we prepare for our baby?   This episode is for you if your partner is: 1) Ready to make the changes to improve pregnancy health but not sure about next steps 2) Supportive and says he will change his diet/lifestyle but you feel like you're nagging him 3) Dealing with male factor infertility and you have fertility issues too and you don't know where to start   In this episode you'll learn: 1) Specific steps the male partner can take right now 2) How to get your partner on board without cajoling 3) Themes we see with both male and female factor fertility and how to fast track your chances of pregnancy success --- Resources Fab Fertile Method https://www.fabfertile.com/what-we-do/ Ep 193 https://www.fabfertile.com/blog/how-to-get-pregnant-naturally-with-low-amh-high-fsh/ Ep 336  https://www.fabfertile.com/blog/how-to-improve-low-sperm-count-motility-and-dna-fragmentation-2/ --- Book your Supercharge Your Fertility Discovery call here with your partner (https://bit.ly/getpregnantpodcast) During our call, we'll be discussing what you have tried so far and where you've faced challenges. This can feel stressful but is designed to help us get to the root cause of your fertility issues and will help me to give you the best possible action plan at the end of the call. However, to reassure you – on this call we won't be digging into the trauma associated with infertility/miscarriage/loss – rather we are focused on solutions and an ACTION PLAN as to how our Fab Fertile Method can help you get pregnant naturally. --- This episode is sponsored by: Legacy Legacy: the digital fertility clinic that allows you to test, freeze, and improve your sperm from home. Legacy allows you to test your sperm with a mail-in kit so you can produce a sample in the comfort of your own home. Their kits use a transport media that's clinically proven to protect and extend the life of sperm for overnight shipping. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track!   Check out today's questions:    Shirleyta: I have suffered for BMS for 1.5 years.. what should I do, Doctor? What kind of specific Doctor do I need . Thank you for your kind attention.   Fiona: Scans show fatty liver but I don't consume any alcohol, my diet is organic and plant-based with no processed foods. How is this possible?   Anonymous: Hi there! Firstly, thank you for all the knowledge and wisdom you share! I have been working on healing my gut for about 3 months now. I have noticed some changes like more energy, less cravings, better sleep. However, I am still really struggling with my skin. My skin periodically gets this sort of rash that looks like sebaceous filaments and water retention. I know sebaceous filaments are natural but they are not always this prominent. Are there foods that cause this? Also, I have noticed that i have a sensitivity to lectins and a lot of the protein sources on the Dr. Cabral detox are a bit high in lectins(beans, legumes, chia seeds). I listened to your podcast on eliminating them for a while if one is sensitive and then reintroducing them later on. How can I modify the detox so that I still get enough protein while also avoiding lectins? Thank you so much in advance!   Moriah: I was just listening to your podcast and you said something word for word what I said to myself a year ago… “I won't take antibiotics unless I'm dying” Last year, antibiotics caused me to catch a c diff infection and I've never been so sick, the antibiotics they gave me to cure the c diff, didn't even work and I got a second infection, I literally felt like I could have died. A local naturopath finally helped me heal my gut and repair my issues. Just wanted to say thank you for speaking out about the danger of unnecessary use of antibiotics   Lisa: Is it ok to use cbd oil while pregnant? I have been using cbd oil for 2-3 years to help me sleep at night and I can't sleep well without it. Thoughts on taking it during pregnancy ?   Anonymous: Hi. I have been listening to your podcast for a while and it has really been helping a lot with my health issues. In numerous podcast episodes, you have mentioned that keto and long intermittent fasting isn't good for female hormones. I have extreme insulin resistance and I have had it for years. I have tried keto with vegetables for about 3 weeks now along with intermittent fasting of 16 hours in order to try to reduce my insulin resistance, hair loss at temples, and skin rash. However, i seem to be gaining more weight around the belly even though I have not been consuming any carbs other than low glycemic vegetables. What could be causing this? I thought that belly fat especially love handles were caused by high insulin? Also, what method would you suggest for healing extreme insulin resistance for a female? Thank you so much in advance!    Thank you for tuning into today's Cabral HouseCall and be sure to check back tomorrow where we answer more of our community's questions!    - - - Show Notes & Resources: http://StephenCabral.com/2283 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral   - - - Dr. Cabral's New Book, The Rain Barrel Effect https://amzn.to/2H0W7Ge - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: http://CabralSupportGroup.com - - -  Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Sleep & Hormones Test (Run your adrenal & hormone levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - > View all Functional Medicine lab tests (View all Functional Medicine lab tests you can do right at home for you and your family)

This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens and Rupa Health. Many of us are living our lives out of balance and are stressed from the time we wake up until the time our heads hit the pillow. The problem is that chronic stress causes inflammation and is behind many of the health conditions that affect men specifically. Stress can drive low testosterone, for instance, which is a common problem for men that drives many other health issues. In today's episode, I talk with Dr. George Papanicolaou, Dr. Louis Ignarro, and Jessie Inchauspé about low testosterone and its effects on men, the heart-protective molecule nitric oxide, the importance of minimizing blood sugar spikes, and much more. Dr. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is board certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for four years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility, where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health, a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017.Dr. Louis Ignarro is a medical research scientist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his breakthrough discovery of how nitric oxide positively impacts health and longevity. His groundbreaking research on nitric oxide paved the way for—among other innovations—Viagra. He is an award-winning Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Molecular & Medical Pharmacology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and has his PhD in pharmacology, with over 35 years of experience teaching.Jessie Inchauspé holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics from King's College London and a master's degree in biochemistry from Georgetown University. Her work at a genetic analysis start-up in Silicon Valley made her realize that, as the key to good health, food habits beat genetics. In her first book, Glucose Revolution, Jessie shares her startling discovery about the essential role of blood sugar in every aspect of our lives, from cravings to fertility, and the surprising hacks to optimize it while still eating the foods we love.
