Permission To Speak Freely

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 31, 2026 178:41

In this episode of Permission To Speak Freely, Damo and Aaron are joined by ITC Raven Douglass and HMC Josh Mackey for a wide-ranging conversation about Chief Season, leadership, Navy culture, and the policies shaping today's Sailors. The crew starts with Chief initiation and debates whether the process has become too dependent on location, personalities, and individual Messes, or whether a more standardized approach would create a better experience for Chief Selects. From there, they get into package reviews, selection-board feedback, physical readiness expectations, and what Sailors are actually supposed to do with the advice they receive after not being selected. The conversation expands into military social media and the responsibility that comes with having a platform, including where the line should be drawn when Sailors create content in uniform or while at work. The group also discusses accountability, leadership after mistakes, barracks conditions, uniform standards, and some of the everyday issues that continue to frustrate Sailors across the fleet. Later, things get heated when the conversation turns to how the Navy handled COVID, vaccine mandates and separations, and whether lessons from those decisions have anything in common with the Navy's current approach to beards. Damo and Aaron strongly disagree, Raven weighs in, and Doc brings another perspective to a debate that becomes one of the episode's most spirited exchanges. Somewhere along the way, the crew also manages to argue about AI-generated content, influencers, back pockets on khakis, engineers stuffing everything imaginable into their uniforms, and whether people can still recognize what's real on the internet. Four voices. Plenty of disagreement. No shortage of jokes. And nearly three hours of Permission To Speak Freely.   Do you have “Do Better” that you want us to review on a future episode? Matthew Kirschenbaum delivered Rare Book School's 2026 Sol M. and Mary Ann O'Brian Malkin Endowed Lecture, "From text to .txt: Making Material Messes in a Sloppy World," on 6 July 2026. About the Talk: By the turn of the millennium, the word “text” had become a verb. Three-and-a-half years ago, ChatGPT was released into the wild, decisively severing the link between writing and human expression. In 2025, Merriam-Webster's word of the year was “slop.” This talk will offer an attenuated archaeology of what someone we know once called the textual condition. And not to give away the game, but that condition is not good: today, text functions as something much more like a fossil fuel or other extractable resource than a medium for communication and expression. Nonetheless, the talk also asks how we can still make some good old fashioned material messes in a world of slop. Examples will be provided. Refreshments will be served. There may even be a book or two. About the Speaker: Matthew Kirschenbaum rejoined UVA in 2025 as Commonwealth Professor of Artificial Intelligence and English after 25 years at the University of Maryland, where he finished as a Distinguished University Professor. He considers himself a student of texts and textual technologies in all their social and material forms, and his scholarship and teaching have explored literary intersects with printing and bookmaking, archival science, media archaeology, digital humanities, and now artificial intelligence. He is the author of three books, most recently Bitstreams: The Future of Digital Literary Heritage from the University of Pennsylvania Press (2021). His first book, Mechanisms: New Media and the Forensic Imagination (2008) was the winner of multiple awards, including the MLA Prize for a First Book. Track Changes: A Literary History of Word Processing (2016) enjoyed widespread public media attention. Recent articles have appeared in PMLA, Critical Inquiry, and ELH; and he frequently writes for popular outlets, which have included the Atlantic, the Washington Post, Slate, Los Angeles Review of Books, Public Books, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. Kirschenbaum is an active member of the Modern Language Association's task force on AI in Research and Teaching, and a member of the teaching faculty at Rare Book School. He has been a Guggenheim and an NEH Fellow, and is a practicing letterpress printer. Current projects includes two books, the first on the political economy of text in the present moment and the second on the weaponization of AI in what some have called a full-blown epistemic crisis. You can find him on Bluesky at @mkirschenbaum.bsky.social.

Helium is the last thing most drivers think about until a car can't ship because a chip can't ship. We follow a surprising thread from helium balloons to the clean rooms where semiconductors are made, and why a strained global helium supply can raise fresh questions about automotive chip availability. If you remember the pandemic-era semiconductor shortage, this conversation makes one thing clear: the next bottleneck might come from a material most of us never associate with cars.We break down what helium actually does inside a semiconductor fab, including how it helps purge contamination during wafer processing and supports precision steps like extreme ultraviolet lithography. Then we connect the dots to the vehicles you see on the road, from advanced driver assistance systems to EV hardware and infotainment. Because liquid helium boils off so easily, stockpiling is not simple, so logistics and semiconductor grade supply matter as much as the raw production numbers. From there we shift into the fun stuff that keeps car people glued to the weekend: Jeff's racing calendar with NASCAR and IndyCar, plus a few schedule notes influenced by world events. Mike brings This Week in Auto History, touching Pontiac milestones, the Oakland name that helped shape GM history, the polarizing Honda Element, and the Mustang's legendary launch day. We also hit current headlines, including EV registration trends after tax credit changes and the update on Carroil Shelby Way at Ford.If you like smart car talk with real-world supply chain context, listen now, share it with a friend, and leave a review so more drivers can find us. After you hear it, what surprised you most: helium in chips or how fragile “small” supplies can be?Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Recovery from knee surgery goes sideways when a trusted friend secretly brings a new kitten into a home with medically fragile cats, triggering panic, confrontation, and an awkward rush to fix the damage. Another letter dives into a family crisis involving an ongoing celebrity scam where logic, proof, and loved ones can't break through denial. There's also a brutal financial nightmare after a bank account is hacked, leaving someone locked out of their own money and stuck paying for a crime they didn't commit. Boundaries, trust, control, and hard decisions collide in brutal, messy situations where there are no easy fixes—just fallout.

Family estrangement can mess with your head in ways other people rarely understand. Whether you're estranged from family, dealing with no contact, trying to make sense of being cut off, or asking yourself why family estrangement hurts so much, this kind of loss can have a huge impact on your mental health and emotional wellbeing. In this week's episode of the Let's Talk About Mental Health podcast, I'm talking about family estrangement, including: what estrangement really is, estrangement grief, and how to cope with family estrangement when family ties are broken or when family cuts contact. I explore why going no contact is rarely ever a simple choice, how toxic family relationships can lead to distance or disconnection, and what emotional healing can look like when you're estranged from parents, part of an estranged family, or stuck in the middle of estranged families and dysfunctional family dynamics. I also talk about peace of mind, healing, and what to do when you're dealing with other people's painful questions or opinions (like “but she's your mother”), or wondering how to cut contact with family without losing yourself in the process.

Only a small slice of podcasts ever makes it to 100 episodes, so we wanted this one to feel like a real toast, not a victory lap. We talk honestly about how Try That in a Small Town started, why it mattered to us, and what it still means when the world tries to turn a simple message into something else. The heart of it is still the same: look out for your neighbor, stand up for people who can't defend themselves, and don't forget where you came from.We also rewind through the messy behind-the-scenes stuff that comes with building a weekly show while living in the music business, from our early “phone on the table” pilot to the deals that almost happened and the grind that never really turns off. If you've ever felt like your job follows you home, you'll understand this conversation about sacrifice, pressure, and why a great song can still light you back up.Then we have some fun with a question that instantly exposes every country fan's bias: the Mount Rushmore of male country singers. Dwight Yoakam, George Strait, Randy Travis, Waylon, Hank Jr., Garth, Morgan Wallen and more get name-checked, argued over, and defended like it's a barroom court case. We wrap by sharing what we've learned about each other over 100 episodes, shouting out a listener story of the week, and thanking the people who've kept the lights on, including Patriot Mobile, eSpaces, Peacemaker Coffee, and Original Glory. They just need a little guidance." "Instead of expecting them to clean everything in one shot, let kids clean up in increments of 5 minutes, 10 minutes or whatever they can handle."
