In today's episode of the School of Midlife Podcast, we're diving into how to shift from just thinking about your goals and plans to actually taking action and making progress. We all know that mindset shifts are important, but they are only the first step. If you don't couple that mindset change with action, nothing will change. This episode takes a deeper look at how we often delay action with what we think are necessary preparations and how those tasks may be just another way of procrastinating. Whether you're thinking of starting a new workout plan, writing a book, or getting more involved in your career, it's easy to find ourselves caught up in "getting ready" instead of "getting started."Learn how to move from the overwhelming thought of “I have to” to “I get to” and embrace the power of setting a timer to actually get going. Whether you set a timer for five minutes or 30 minutes, the momentum you'll gain from simply starting is often enough to keep you going.Key Takeaways:Mindset shifts are essential, but they need to be paired with action. We often delay taking action by “getting ready” with things that don't really matter. The importance of setting a timer to force yourself to start and gain momentum.Learn to shift from “I have to” to “I get to” and create a productive mindset.Even a short time commitment (5-30 minutes) can help overcome the fear of starting and make tasks feel more manageable. If you're looking to push past your procrastination and finally make some forward momentum this year, this episode will give you some practical tools to help you start now.LINKS + MENTIONS:Ep. 106: From Midlife Obligation to Opportunity: The Power of Changing Two WordsWatch on YouTube

The Great Product Owner: The Vision Setter Who Empowers Teams In this segment, Anuj describes an exemplary Product Owner who mastered the art of inclusive product development. This PO excelled at bringing everyone together to discuss the product and potential solutions, while maintaining a clear focus on the vision and problem space. Rather than dictating solutions, they created an environment where team members could freely explore solutions while the PO remained available for questions and guidance. Their success came from building strong relationships with stakeholders and customers, and effectively using the Eisenhower matrix to prioritize work. The Bad Product Owner: The Requirements Translator Anuj discusses common anti-patterns he's observed in Product Owners, particularly those who may have previously been project managers. A crucial issue arises when POs create user stories without first understanding the customer and their journey with the product. Some POs become mere translators, rigidly adhering to story templates instead of truly understanding customer needs. The key to improvement lies in helping POs learn to engage directly with customers, focus on problem exploration rather than immediate solutions, and collaborate with the whole team in solution discussions. Self-reflection Question: How can you help your Product Owner move from being a requirements translator to becoming a true value maximizer? [The Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast Recommends]

Have you had enough of feeling unworthy, feeling inadequate, or not enough? Do you think you don't deserve…? Do you struggle to receive gifts and compliments?   This is one of the most common challenges those I coach struggle with.   Feeling unworthy, undeserving, and not enough helped you get here but it won't get you there.   How do you feel when you think you are unworthy, an imposter, or inadequate? How do you show up when you feel not worthy? What results do you get when you doubt yourself? When you feel undeserving, unworthy, and inadequate you stay stuck where you are. You likely do not perform at your highest level or engage with the world as your highest, wisest, most productive self. Imagine what things could be like? Moving beyond feeling unworthy, not deserving, and "not enough" is something we work on in both Ongoing Presence and Transition Well A LOT. The small group setting is safe and perfect for this work. You learn you are not alone while enjoying support and camaraderie. There is time to practice, integrate, and explore.  These groups are only open for sign-up twice a year, in January and late August. Each group is limited to 12 women in medicine. We meet twice a month in the evening in all time zones If you want to move beyond feeling not enough, inadequate, and unworthy in 2025, sign up. www.jessiemahoneymd.com/transition-well-with-jessie https://www.jessiemahoneymd.com/ongoing-presence Your life will be very different on the other side. Likely even by March.   In the meantime, listen to this podcast and get started right away. Show up more mindfully. Notice how often the thought of not being enough drives your decisions. Start asking good questions. Choose the energy you want to make decisions from. What energy leads you to your most authentic and aligned decisions? Stay out of an all-or-none mindset.  What if there was no paradigm of enough vs not enough, deserving, or not, or worthy vs. unworthy?  Consider focusing on being human and/or ways in which you belong. Be patient. Practice self-compassion. Practice non-judgement. Trust yourself.  Listen to learn about other potential solutions. Move beyond consuming this amazing podcast. This conversation challenges artists to let go of appearances, lean into discomfort, and connect with the elemental energy that drives their work.   Key Points:   Art Is Messy and Raw: Creativity isn't about perfection or neatness—it's about diving into the chaos and embracing the process. You can't just think your way through art; you must experience it fully and let it flow through you.   The Power of Vulnerability: Art requires courage. Sharing your work is an act of bravery because it exposes parts of yourself you might rather hide. Sometimes, the most meaningful art comes from exploring discomfort, pain, or darkness.   Tap Into the Elemental: Creativity is about connecting with intangible forces: imagination, emotion, energy, and the shadow self. By embracing your full self—including the parts you avoid—you unlock deeper artistic expression.   Move Beyond the Surface: True artistry isn't about looking cool or seeking approval—it's about being real. Superficial work might entertain, but it won't resonate deeply or stand the test of time.   Art as a Shared Experience: Art is a gift you share with the world. Its value comes from its authenticity and the connection it creates with others. Faking it might get attention, but only genuine art truly resonates.   What You'll Explore With Us: How to embrace the messiness of the creative process. Why vulnerability is essential for meaningful art. Practical insights on connecting with your imagination, emotions, and shadow self. How to move past surface-level creativity and create work that truly matters. Join us as we dive into the core of what makes art powerful, meaningful, and alive. This is your invitation to engage with the elemental forces within you and let them shape your creative journey.   -- (Photo by Taylor Heery on Unsplash)   ...And if you're loving the show, don't forget to hit that SUBSCRIBE button, SHARE IT with your friends, and VISIT OUR WEBSITE for even more content!  www.WayoftheArtist.com

The generation of political leaders that produced the landmark legislation of the Civil Rights Era no doubt saw themselves as working to make one’s race, ethnicity, religion, sex, etc. matter less to one’s future prospects. And in many ways, they clearly succeeded. They would almost certainly be surprised and disappointed to learn how much emphasis those factors are still getting. Why has this happened? Is the problem that our focus on issues of race, ethnicity, sex, religion, gender, etc. has gone too far? Or is the problem that we haven’t yet focused on them enough? It is about you, the parent. Let your teen live their life, and go do those things you feel you're missing out on for yourself. “If you keep making these decisions for your kids, if you keep diving in and fixing everything, not only are you not giving them the skills they need, but I really believe it sends a message that you don't have any faith in them.” – Cheryl PankhurstAbout Cheryl Pankhurst: With an illustrious career spanning over 25 years as a Special Education Specialist, Cheryl has dedicated her life to understanding and supporting teenagers facing unique challenges. Through her transformative journey, Cheryl discovered her true calling – to uplift and empower not only teens with diagnoses but every young person navigating the complexities of adolescence. Food has a powerful impact on how we feel, think, and interact in the world. It affects our energy, our mood, and even the way we show up in relationships. For those of us on the recovery path, it can be difficult to fully surrender to the principle that every compulsive bite blocks our connection to spirit. It's such a powerful question because, in one way or another, it touches us all.Together, we're going to examine what it means to truly honor our bodies and spirits through our relationship with food — an exploration I believe is at the heart of recovery and personal growth.Tommy Discusses:Strategies to change your relationship with foodThe 12-hour food windowWhy moving our bodies is so important How emotions affect our eating habits and patternsWould you like to be a guest on the In The Circle Podcast? The poetry of Rumi makes that process sound like a smooth and blissful journey. But, the reality is that the work of being open amidst tough stuff, seeing our suffering, accepting our pain, and moving on can be messy and difficult. AND, no matter how many times we try and fall short, it's still healing work. In this episode, we explore the world of extreme expeditions and mental resilience with Paul Watkins, an adventurer who has conquered challenges across seven continents. From Antarctica's icy expanses to towering mountain peaks, Paul shares gripping tales that showcase not just physical endurance, but also mental fortitude, self-discovery, and the power of human connection in adversity. He explores how gallows humour becomes a lifeline in dire situations and why confronting your limitations can be transformative. Paul unveils practical techniques for building mental resilience, including the intriguing 'future self' concept and its impact on decision-making. He challenges conventional wisdom about resilience, advocating for an 'anti-fragile' approach that thrives on stress rather than just withstanding it. These insights aren't just for extreme adventurers - they're valuable for parents fostering independence in children, professionals facing tough decisions, or anyone looking to build confidence in challenging situations. This conversation is packed with actionable takeaways, from tips on positive self-talk to a thought-provoking two-step model for decision-making. You'll learn why 'pre-paying hurt' through training is invaluable, how to harness your 'future self' for motivation, and why being merely resilient isn't enough in today's world. Whether you're scaling mountains or navigating everyday challenges, this episode offers invaluable lessons on not just surviving, but truly thriving in the face of adversity. Key Topics:  Expedition Experiences: Trail running, climbing, and expeditions across seven continents, with a particular focus on Antarctic conditions and challenges.  Mental Resilience: Exploring the mental vs. physical challenges in extreme situations, including the role of gallows humour as a coping strategy during difficult expeditions.   Trust and Human Connection: How shared extreme experiences create lasting bonds and trust between expedition partners. Self-Discovery Through Discomfort: Why pushing personal limits and "staring into the abyss" help us learn about ourselves in extreme situations. Mindset and Self-Talk: Practical techniques for mental resilience, including the importance of positive self-talk ("I'm awesome") and framing challenges through the lens of personal values rather than as chores. Future Self Concept: The psychological concept of "future self" and how thinking about your future self can influence current decision-making and motivation.  Antifragility: How to build resilience through intentional exposure to challenges, including the importance of allowing children to experience and overcome difficulties rather than overprotecting them. Key Takeaways: When doing extreme challenges, be conscious of what you're doing all the time. Always have the mindset and the framework to keep going until you reach your goal. Have a conversation with yourself and ask, “How important is it to you to win?” Discipline is an act of self-love. Two-step model for deciding whether to do something: think about it for 30 days and at the end of 30 days, reflect how much you thought about it; then ask yourself, if you could do it, and no one would ever know, and you can never tell anyone, do you still want to do it? Look at training as a pre-payment of hurt for future events. Do something today that your future you will thank you for. Being resilient is not enough; we should adapt to stress and thrive in hard environments. The
Life After Infertility: 10 Common Struggles and How to Move Beyond Them

The "So Now What?" Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 24, 2024 14:35

If you're childless after infertility treatments, you are not alone, even though it might feel like you are. In this episode, I open up about my personal journey through seven years of fertility treatments, only to end up without the child I dreamed of. I know firsthand how devastating and isolating this experience can be. What most women don't realize is that these feelings—grief, confusion, loss of purpose—are prevalent among women who have undergone IVF or fertility treatments without having a child. But here's the truth: most fertility clinics don't offer the support or resources to help you make sense of life after treatments. We're left to navigate this uncharted, unexpected path without guidance. That's where today's episode comes in. I'll walk you through the 10 most common struggles women face after unsuccessful fertility treatments, and more importantly, I'll show you how you can begin to shift your perspective so these struggles no longer define your life. Key Points from This Episode 1. Grief and Loss     Grieving after infertility is specific and complex.Grieving the loss of your dream of motherhood is deep and often unacknowledged by others. It doesn't have to define you forever. 2. Identity and Purpose    When motherhood doesn't happen, it can feel like you've lost your identity. But there is so much more to you than the title of “mom.” You can redefine your life and find purpose in a way that is fulfilling. 3. Feelings of Failure     It's easy to feel like your body failed you, but infertility is not your fault. Learning to release self-judgment is crucial to moving forward and finding peace. 4. Compassion and Jealousy     Seeing friends and family share milestones with their children can lead to feelings of comparison and jealousy. But you can release those feelings and celebrate your own unique journey. 5. Isolation    Infertility and childlessness can be isolating. You're not alone in feeling this way. Finding a community that truly understands what you're going through is important. 6. Relationships with Partners    Infertility puts a strain on relationships, but it's possible to reconnect with your partner in a deeper way once you release the weight of grief. 7. Navigating Friendships    Being the only childless friend in your circle can feel isolating, but your friendships can evolve, and you can still find meaningful connection. 8. Cultural and Social Expectations    Society places a lot of pressure on women to find purpose in motherhood. However, you define your own success, and it doesn't have to include children. 9. Uncertainty About the Future    When your future no longer includes children, it can feel like you've lost direction. But you can create a new vision for your life that feels exciting and full of possibility. 10. Fear of Aging Alone     The fear of growing old without children is real, but you can build meaningful relationships and a support system that gives you love and care throughout your life.   Why This Episode Matters:   The feelings you're experiencing after leaving fertility treatments without a child are not unique to you. They are incredibly common, yet rarely talked about. Most fertility clinics don't provide resources for women in this situation, which leaves us feeling alone. But you don't have to stay stuck in these feelings forever. There is a way to shift your perspective and move from merely surviving to thriving. In this episode, I share how the women I've helped through my Thrive After Infertility Mastermind have shifted their lives from being consumed by grief and loss to feeling fulfilled and hopeful for the future. As someone with an advanced certification in grief and post-traumatic growth, I understand the weight you're carrying, and I'm here to help you transform your life. The main character in Chickasaw writer Danica Nava's debut novel gets into trouble for making some questionable claims about her Choctaw identity to try and get ahead in the working world. Cherokee citizen Christina Berry writes about an Austin woman's sometimes funny, sometimes heart wrenching desire to start a family. And Karen Kay's historical novel explores an interracial connection on the mid-1800s Great Plains frontier. What each of these books has in common is the quest for true love. They also have honest, complex, and engaging portrayals of Native characters written by Native authors. We'll hear from them about their work and Native representation in modern romance literature. GUESTS Danica Nava (Chickasaw), author of The Truth According to Ember Karen Kay (Choctaw), historical romance author Christina Berry (citizen of the Cherokee Nation), contemporary romance author

Null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) is the default approach to statistical analysis and reporting in marketing and, more broadly, in the biomedical and social sciences. A Journal of Marketing study advocates for rethinking this approach entirely. Let's Move Beyond 'the Lesser of Two Evils' | Guest: Rep. Phil Lyman | 8/19/24

For years, all we got with Republicans was the promise of “the lesser of two evils.” Meanwhile, things always get worse, and now Republicans can't even win any more because the voters sense a lack of sincerity. There has to be a point when we finally pull the plug on “vote Republican no matter what.” In my view, that line has been drawn in the Utah gubernatorial race. We're joined by Utah state Rep. Phil Lyman, who is challenging Gov. Spencer Cox as a write-in candidate during the general election. Lyman makes the case for why this situation is different. He believes that he is the rightful nominee after having won the convention. He describes the web of corruption surrounding the players and the process through which Cox gathered signatures. He also shows how Cox is so liberal that it would actually be worse for him to win than the Democrat. This is something we must keep in mind for the future in other states, if we ever hope to finally break out of the vicious cycle of uniparty failure theater.  Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 298: Mimicry's Limits: How Horses Move Beyond This And You Can Too

This podcast explores the crucial difference between mimicking and understanding in learning processes, using examples from horse training and human skill acquisition. Stacy emphasizes that while mimicking is often the initial step in learning, it's merely the beginning. True mastery comes from developing a deeper understanding of the 'why' behind actions and behaviors. Stacy shares how young horses, like Lefty, start by copying behaviors without fully comprehending their meanings. Similarly, humans may imitate training techniques without grasping their underlying principles. This superficial approach can lead to incomplete learning and ineffective application of skills. Stacy stresses the importance of moving beyond imitation to develop nuanced understanding, which enables learners to adapt techniques to various situations and truly master a skill. Key takeaways: • Mimicking is a natural starting point in learning but shouldn't be the end goal • Understanding the 'why' behind actions leads to more effective application of skills • Observing patterns and questioning experiences deepens comprehension • True mastery involves adapting techniques to different contexts • Moving beyond copying requires active engagement and reflection on learning experiences
