Welcome to the Dyslexia in Adults podcast, a weekly podcast discussing the reality of dyslexia, but only in adults. I'm Natalie, the Founder of Dyslexia in Adults, and I am incredibly passionate about talking specifically about adult dyslexia. It frustrates me so much when people talk about child dyslexia with only a cursory mention of adult dyslexia. When you think about it, there are more adults with dyslexia as nearly seventy percent of the worlds population are over the age of eighteen! There is also a wave of adults being diagnosed with dyslexia later in life, with little or no information about how to navigate the challenges that are specific to adults with dyslexia. It also doesn’t help those people who want to help adults with dyslexia; line managers, work colleagues, friends, family, if the only information available is that to support children as opposed to what it means to have and support dyslexia in adulthood. I have rolled up my sleeves, and I am determined to create a space where we only talk about adult dyslexia. It's not part of the conversation, it is the conversation. Come and join the conversation and help us grow the community. All I ask is that, if you find the content valuable, please rate, review and share this podcast to help others find it.
Have you ever felt like you're just moving a bit slower than everyone else? Like your brain is in slow motion while the rest of the world zooms by? That's something I can relate to deeply, and it's tied to processing speed, a common trait among dyslexics like me. Episode 82 - How to tell your Boss about Challenges with Working Memory In this penultimate episode in the series of 'Working Memory' at work, we go through how communicate with your boss about the challenges of working memory. Working memory affects everyone and people with dyslexia have a slightly reduce working memory capacity. What does this mean? But simply, working memory is that part of your brain which is supposed to hold multiple parts of information temporarily and re-call it when needed. An example of this in the work place might be, in a meeting with your team, or when in a training course. We call it our brain's post-it note. What does a reduced capacity look like in working memory? A neurotypical brain would receive multiple parts of information, process it, organise is of where to store the information (long term memory, short term memory) and then re-call it when needed. A dyslexic brain would receive parts of information, miss other parts of information as you're still trying to process the last bits, store it in short term memory, start to process new information, and forget the last price which has been stored temporarily. Sound like you? Well, in this episode, we give you some tips to help navigate this challenge, and most critically advice and suggestions on how to communicate these challenges to your boss in a way which packages it in productive and positive manner. We even provide you with a full scrip of what to say below... **Asking for Help Via Email 1:** Hello XX I wanted to quickly discuss with you some options for approaching the team meeting that will help me complete my work faster and create more efficiency. At the moment, our meetings are more like brainstorming sessions, where we often jump from topic to topic. How I process information means this unstructured approach can be overwhelming and does not allow me to contribute as fully as the team deserves. Next week, would you mind if I created an agenda (with your approval) and we went topic by topic? This approach would allow the whole team to better prepare for our meetings, make note-taking easier, and create clearer, better follow-up after the meeting. While our team meetings are not a big problem, I think this small shift might benefit the team and ensure we get the most out of our meetings. Let me know what you think, and I'll send a draft agenda. Episode 70 - Dyslexia Success Story with CMO of Samsung Europe, Benjamin Braun. This episode is a little different. In this episode I am joined by the brilliant Benjamin Braun, the CMO of Samsung Europe! My aim with these ocasional guest interviews is to share and demonstarte real world examples of people who are scuessful BECAUSE of their dyslexia, not despite it. This also proves that of the things we talk about on this podcast really do work in the real world, and they will work for everyone. It helps to contextualise the concepts we talk about on this podcast into real world examples. Benjamin joined Samsung as their Chief Marketing Officer for Europe. Prior to Samsung, Benjamin led Audi's marketing in the United Kingdom. His campaigns were used worldwide and recognised with a Cannes Lions Gold Award and an IPA Grand Prix for marketing efficiency. Before joining Audi, Benjamin was part of the comparethemarket.com's executive team and worked across the UK, France and Holland. At British Gas he launched a nifty little app that lets you control your home from your phone. And before that he worked for American Express in New York. Benjamin's personal achievements include his photography exhibition at the Tate Gallery in London and receiving the Royal Swedish Glass design award. Benjamin also volunteers as a Special Police Constable in London where he responds to emergencies. Episode 68 - Dyslexia and Reading Long E-mails That feeling you get when you get one heck of a loooong e-mail! This is a question that came up in our membership The Hive and ther person seeking help was desperate for that hack that would solve their problem. Often, with dyslexia, the reading is not the problem, its the comprehension. Comprehension is the understanding of teh whole text, not just the words. This usually comes about when you notice that you have re-read the same text multple times, and when you get to the end and relaise that you took none of that in. Ofcourse there are loads of things which we could recomend. Theres a ton of assivtive technology and coloured filters you could use which might help. But I am sorry to say that, when we want real sucess with managing our dyslexia, the reality is that there is no one hack that will solve everything for you. And, though we could recommend loads of really helpful things, it is usually down to the individual needs as some things just won't work for you and the way your brain works. In this episode I share with you some suggestions which we believe could help with thsi specific dyslexia challenge and what we think you should do to get ever lasting sucess.
