Episode 35 - Dyslexic People Work Hard Dyslexic people work hard and can go to extreme lengths to prepare (and sometimes over prepare) just to feel that we're keeping up with others. This hard working ethic is a great strength of dyslexia and sometimes goes massively unnoticed by others. However, I have heard of, and experienced myself, so many times where our hard working ethic and over preparedness can go too far to our peril. Going to extreme lengths, working hard to make sure we're 'keeping up' can mean we people the fountain of knowledge for topics where everyone comes to you for help. However this can also lead to burn out and exhaustion, (I talk a lot about this in Episode 3, Tiredness if you wanted to go back and listen to that episode). In this episode I share some stories of my own experience and from others dyslexics I have met through Dyslexia in Adults of how hard working can be a strength and a challenge. I also share some helpful advice I share with my 1:1 clients for navigating the challenges the hard working presents. The biggest take away I want to take from this episode is to learn that; its okay not to take on 150% of the work. It also okay to take on 80% and lean on others (at work, at home) to make up the 20%. It's so important to understand and recognise when working hard is serving us, and when it is not. Episode 34 - Dyslexia, Change your Mindset Some times all we want is a new system, hack, or tip that will change how we cope with the challenges of dyslexia. I say, whilst they are all good things, FIRST, we need to change our mindset about how we view our dyslexia challenges. In this episode I share with you why focusing on our midset around dyslexia first is most imporant when we consider setting up systems and 'hacks' that create those ever lasting changes in how we tackle the challenges with dyslexia. Have you felt like you can't wait to get away from a boss or manager? Often what I've found is that you want to leave that boss or manager so much that you jump straight into another job with similar issues. The thing is I hadn't understood what my dyslexia is for me and what works for me, so why did I expect an employer to understand. The best thing that worked for me was understanding my dyslexia better and find systems and ways of working that work with my brain and not against it. The hardest thing was then being able to discuss this with my boss or manger. How much do you understand about dyslexia and slow processing? Slow processing is one of those dyslexia challenges which is possibly the worst for impacting confidence. I get it all the time! Some of the simplest questions takes me ages to answer and while I am trying figure out the answer, the overwhelming feeling of embarrassment overtakes everything and you're left feeling rubbish. You also be made to feel even worse when other judge you. However, I also get those times when I can answer instantly some of the most complex questions and explain it ways that everyone can understand using narrative reasoning. This leaves others perplexed at how you managed to find the answer so quickly. And sometimes, people won't believe you because the other 9 out of 10 times you've not so quick to answer. Frustrating isn't it!? So... let's break it down so we can understand it better and build confidence. I can't do that, I am dyslexic... Is what I used to say to myself ALL the time. I used to rule my life by what I believed I couldn't do BECAUSE I have dyslexia. I let this modest stop me from doing some many things, like learning to drive, and didn't apply for a grad scheme, and the BIGGEST one is, learning another language. If you have listened to a few of these podcasts now then you will be aware that I am shattering at least one of these old beliefs that held me back by learning to speak Spanish. What's my point here? Well... the reason why I want to address this topic and mindset in this episode is because I see it alot on my 1:1 dyslexia coaching clients, that these beliefs of "I can't" are hold them back from even trying. Even things from their childhood at school is where some of these beliefs started having been holding them back their entire adulthood. What I have noticed in myself and others is that, sometimes we use these "I can't" phrase to protect ourselves from the humiliation of trying and failing. There's no blame here, I get it, I've been there myself. In this podcast I share with you the step by step process I go through with my 1:1 clients to break down what is actually at play here so that we can see what these "I can't" statements are really about and then challenge the perspective to grow a new mind set and find success, and hopefully... try something you've always wanted to do but never had the courage. Paula's inspiring story is that of success following removing negative thoughts of dyslexia, setting up systems that work for her, and leaning into her strengths. Paula also shares the same belief that refering to dyslexia as a 'superpower' is totally unrelatable to most people with dyslexia and is often unhelpful to the specific challenges of dyslexia in adults. A little bit about Paula; I am a Chief Technology & Operations Officer for an international traveltech company with 25+ experience in technology and business transformation across multiple industries. I am also a non-executive director for a French publicly listed company. I have lived and worked with dyslexia and dyspraxia since was diagnosed aged 10. have learned to play to my strengths and manage the areas where struggle, not always 100% but good enough to keep progressing. I struggle to relate to the two popular ideas at the moment, 1) dyslexia is a super power its not, we just think and process things differently, and 2) that somehow these ways of thinking are disorders, syndromes, or development failures, my view is that our brains naturally developed differently. The fact that a large proportion of the world doesn't cope very well with our capabilities is something that we need to wNork on but it doesn't mean that somehow we are 'less' than others. I bet nearly everyone has had expectations of what their body should look like or be able to do. These ideas come from many places, unusually external and unhealthy ones. Yet, when you fail to live up to them, grief and unhealthy habits commonly result. Today’s guest helps her clients reframe how they understand their bodies so that they can build new healthier mindsets and practices. About Steph Prangley Steph Prangley is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and owner of Infinity Hill Nutrition, a virtual private practice specializing in women’s hormone health. She helps women with PCOS gain energy, improve ovulation, and stabilize moods so they can accomplish all of their important life goals while being fully present in their relationships. Steph believes it’s possible to gain freedom from the painful and embarrassing symptoms of PCOS by reframing body grief to body acceptance and learning how to trust your body and read its signals. With compassion and kindness, she gently guides her clients with mindset work, nutrition, lifestyle, and their own intuition to build body trust and successfully manage symptoms for the long run. Reversing the Disconnection Between You and Your Body Body grief gets in the way of healing. It removes you from the present moment as you grieve for the loss of some imaginary future or the way your body used to be. Steph describes how this disconnect can be reversed by accepting and honoring your body. Once this is achieved, you can learn how to listen to what your body is telling you. When you understand your body’s signals you can cut through all the outside noise of society, positive changes will follow. With this comes the understanding that healing is not only possible, but you’re in control of it. An Intuitive Approach to Healing As you can imagine, mindset is central to this. It’s important to remember that just because somebody has an “ideal” body, it doesn’t mean that they’re happy. Detaching your emotional state from health outcomes while also working towards your goal is the key here. Steph teaches her clients to do this by helping them hone their intuitive senses. When you find yourself craving food or feeling a certain way, it’s time to stop and examine the source of those feelings. We always want fast results. We jump from this 30-day challenge to that 7-day detox and then continue life as normal until we feel we're getting too fat again and dive back into some unrealistic diet that leaves us feeling hungry and pissed because we aren't eating what we want to be eating. Each and every one of us have different body types, different genetic makeup, different goals and different versions of what we think “looks good”. So why do we buy into the hype of these 1 size fits all programs?I am seriously thinking about creating a realistic program for different sized women to take control of their lives and get in their best shapes using practical and healthy practices based on individualized goals. Especially because of the amount of knowledge I've learned over the last couple of years. I believe the best way to learn is through experience and this has by far been the most valuable lesson. Getting in my best shape went from being a challenge to being a new lifestyle. Most of the changes happened on the inside of me which brought dramatic changes to my physical appearance. When we shift our way of thinking and build our confidence inside out, we tackle life a little differently. We start to see the glass half full instead of empty and begin to appreciate ourselves and our bodies. I used to hate certain body parts and would get really discouraged because I felt like no matter what I did, they never changed. But in all reality, I was getting discouraged so often that I never actually committed to being consistent with anything long enough to see real results. The harsh truth ladies is this. There are no shortcuts to being healthy and feeling and looking your best. The same way that we learned bad habits like eating before bed, not eating breakfast, not drinking enough water, over seasoning our food, not making exercise a priority or my personal favorite, eating a whole bowl of chipotle in 1 sitting even though we know it has enough calorie intake for the entire day is the same way that we have to change those habits. Cleanses, binge diets and challenges will not change those habits and they definitely don't teach us new ones. Nothing about those methods equal long term practices. So instead, I challenge you to view your toning or weight loss journey differently and begin with your mind first. So if you too are looking to get into your best shape and feel and look amazing, here are my 5 steps: 1. Determine Your “Why”Decide what your reason for changing is. Be detailed and specific. Is it to feel better? Feel more confident? Fit Your Clothes Better? What does your dream body even look like?2. Set Realistic GoalsSetting unrealistic goals will only discourage you when you don't meet them. Start with small and achievable goals and slowly work your way up. 3. Expect Off DaysWe all have them, it's about how we bounce back that counts. Create a plan of action for when you stumble or lose your motivation and momentum. 4. Don't Weigh Your Progress Forget the scale and stop chasing numbers. Judge your progress from what you see in the mirror and how you feel about yourself. 5. Make It A Lifestyle, Not A Challenge Consistency is key! Challenges might give you temporary results but the goal is to be in your best shape long-term.
