The EFP presents a special six-episode podcast series celebrating the Journal of Clinical Periodontology (JCP). This exclusive series delves into the JCP's rich history, its far-reaching impact, and its vision for the future. The first episode features an interview with Professor Jan Lindhe, conducted by Andreas Stravopoulos and Björn Klinge. Prof. Lindhe, a towering figure in dental research and professor emeritus at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, served as the JCP's editor-in-chief from 1976 to 2004.

Join David Herrera, chair of the European Workshop Committee, Mariano Sanz, co-chair of the Perio Workshop 2023, and ADEE past president, Pål Barkvoll, as they delve into the key outcomes of Perio Workshop 2023. The workshop brought together 70 leading international experts from 22 countries, and the purpose of the gathering was to discuss and establish a new consensus on undergraduate, specialist training, and continuing education in periodontology. In this episode, our guests discuss with Bruno de Carvalho the changes in the discipline (such as those brought about by the 2018 classification of periodontal and peri implant diseases, or the publication of different clinical practice guidelines developed by the EFP) and advances in educational methods and technologies (such as the development of new tools accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic) that made it necessary to update the previous workshop from 2009. The consensus report of the second European consensus workshop on education in periodontology has just been published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology.

Joining the podcast host, Bruno de Carvalho, Professor Nikos Donos, chair of the EFP Education Committee and Doctor Ed Madeley, EFP Alumni co-ordinator, explain how the programmes contribute to unlock excellence.

EFP past president Andreas Stavropoulos and EuroPerio11 treasurer Elena Figuero discuss the importance of research in dentistry and periodontology. 

Closer collaboration between oral health professionals and family physicians is necessary for the prevention, early detection and proper management of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), and vital to promote healthy lifestyles. Pathways for early detection of periodontitis by family physicians, and of NCDs by dental practitioners should be developed. This is the main conclusion of the recently published consensus report of the joint workshop of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and the European region of the World Organisation of Family Doctors (WONCA Europe). Prof. David Herrera, chair of the EFP workshop committee and first author of the publication, Prof. Lior Shapira, past EFP president (2021-2022) and co-author, and Prof. Shlomo Vinker, president of WONCA Europe and co-author of the publication, discuss with Bruno de Carvalho the paper published by the Journal of Clinical Periodontology which summarises the discussions that took place at the EFP's focused workshop on periodontology and family doctors in July 2022 in Madrid, Spain.

David Herrera and Moritz Kebschull, who played leading roles at Perio Workshop 2021 which drew up the EFP clinical practice guideline on the treatment of stage IV periodontitis, explain its importance and potential impact. During the podcast, professors Herrera and Kebschull talk about the methodology for creating an S3-level guideline, the reason why the complexity of stage IV periodontitis meant that a separate guideline was required, the need for a multidisciplinary approach, and how successfully stage IV periodontitis can be managed.
