December 4, 1998. New Haven, Connecticut. 21-year old Suzanne Jovin, a senior student at Yale University, leaves her apartment in order to return a set of keys to a building located on the Old Campus. Before she can return home, Suzanne is found murdered in a residential area located nearly two miles from the campus and it turns out she has been stabbed 17 times and had her throat slit. Suspicion soon turns towards a Yale lecturer named James Van de Velde, who was functioning as Suzanne's senior thesis advisor, but he maintains his innocence and there is no evidence linking him to the crime. Over the years, a number of different leads emerge, including a promising alternate suspect who was a student at Yale, but the crime is never solved. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the controversial murder of Suzanne Jovin. We had 20 minutes that turned into 45 minutes, so basically we had about as much prep as Velde, Carballo and Rojas.  I tried to turn the audio up again this time.  

Carl Van de Velde is een legendarische ondernemer, business mentor en spreker. Met zijn seminars voor jong en oud hielp hij al honderdduizenden ondernemers naar meer omzet, winst en levenskwaliteit. Carl vertelt een inspirerend verhaal van schoolverlater op 17 jaar tot spreken voor duizenden ondernemers, met vele ups en downs onderweg.

Wiet Vande Velde groeide niet op in een ondernemend nest, maar heeft naar zeggen iets van zijn grootvader Eugene die destijds lokaal ondernemer was en de eerste camion van't dorp kocht. Al van kleins af was Wiet bezig met projectjes. Op z'n 16e begon hij al met enkele vrienden een handeltje in organiseren van evenementen en verhuur van eventmateriaal zoals tenten. Dit werd z'n eerste bedrijfje op z'n 18e, welke hij 1 jaar later verkocht. In z'n laatste studiejaar kocht hij een bedrijfje terwijl hij nog op de schoolbanken zat, met geld dat hij van z'n oma kreeg als spaargeld voor de kleinkinderen. Hij raakte z'n geld kwijt binnen  de twee maanden. Niet veel later rolde hij in de zonnepanelen en startte hij onder meer ook nog een restaurant. Z'n eerste moonshot idee kwam er met Palletkraft, een bedrijf waarmee hij de pallettenindustrie wilde verduurzamen. Het mocht niet zijn. Toen een volgende financieringsronde niet tijdig rondgeraakte, eindigde het ambitieuze plan met een faillissement. Een prachtig ontwikkeld product, maar té weinig focus op verkoop. Hij leerde dat sales altijd op de eerste plaats komt. Een goed product verkoopt zichzelf niet. Wiet leerde zichzelf te focussen. Hij maakte schoon schip en ging van vier of vijf verschillende bedrijven naar één project: EnergyKing. In de eerste 10 jaar bouwde hij samen met zijn vennoot EnergyKing self-funded, alvorens hij besloot een turbo op het bedrijf te zetten en een private-equity fonds aan boord te halen.

Bart van der Sloot, universitair hoofddocent aan de Tilburg Law School. Een belletje met de JA21-lijsttrekker Joost Eerdmans die het gedachtegoed van Musk in de Nederlandse politieke praktijk wil brengen en jonge doctor Mark Weijers promoveerde op de levensduurverlenging van auto-batterijen.

Lieve en Marjan gaan op bezoek bij Gladys (29). Tot voor kort woonde ze in een tiny house van amper 18 m². Het was haar grote droom: ze wilde geen hypotheek aflossen maar van het leven genieten. Tot de droom noodgedwongen stopte en Gladys verhuisde naar een bakstenen huis met echte kamers. Hoe stelt ze het, wat mist ze en wat niet? Tiny houses lijken een oplossing voor de wooncrisis, zeker voor jonge mensen, maar zijn ze dan wel geschikt om een leven lang in te wonen? Judith van der Velde verruilde Rotterdam voor Manly (NSW). Beide plekken zijn omringd door water en hebben een grote brug in de omgeving, toch is er één groot verschil: "In Rotterdam speelde mijn hele leven binnen af." In Manly daarentegen voelt ieder weekend bijna als vakantie, zo vertelt Judith.

Een groot succes of doelloos spektakel? Deskundigen blijven sceptisch na de Oekraïnetop van afgelopen maandag. Europese leiders spraken in het Witte Huis met de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump en de Oekraïense president Volodymyr Zelensky over een mogelijk bestand. Just released research from the University of Otago shows bottom trawling on the sea floor can exacerbate climate change. Scientists say their modelling shows that when heavy chains and nets are dragged on the sea floor, its natural alkalinity production is reduced at an amount equivalent to losing two to eight milliion tonnes of CO2 storage per year. About a third of all the carbon dioxide we've emitted has been sequestered by the moana. Lead author Dr Sebastiaan van de Velde is based at the University of Otago's Department of Marine Science and speaks to Susie.
