It's The Good Glow with the incredible Ben Hunt Davis, who is a former British Olympic rower turned performance coach, keynote speaker, and author. He wrote the book Will It Make The Boat Go Faster. This way of thinking became huge within The Good Glow community after Dr Brian Pennie told Ben's brilliant story at one of our live shows. It's only natural that we had to approach Ben to hear this story from him. We are so grateful for his time. This is an excellent episode that will help remind you of ALL THAT IS POSSIBLE, once you set your mind to it. Thank you Electrosal for all the support this season Tickets - Christmas Show

Former stalwart Ian Brightwell is the latest guest on the Official Man City podcast... Brightwell came through the ranks at City - being part of our first ever FA Youth Cup winning side in 1986. A true team player, he went on to make 380 appearances for City between 1986 and 1998 during a rollercoaster period for the Club. Brightwell was also joined in the City squad for several years by his brother, David! In this episode, Ian speaks to hosts George Kelsey and Paul Dickov - having played alongside Dickov in his final two campaigns at Maine Road. The conversation starts with his childhood and family life as son of two Olympians; Robbie Brightwell, captain of the British Olympic team in 1964, and Ann Packer, gold medal winner in the 800m in Tokyo that year. They move on to his stories of a fascinating period in our history, when Brightwell was a regular in a City side that experienced highs and lows in a rollercoaster 12 years between 1986 and 1998. There's also discussion of perhaps his most famous moment in a City shirt, a sweet left-footed strike against Manchester United at Old Trafford! Learn more about your ad choices. British Olympic gold medallist and America's Cup sailor Paul Goodison returns for his second appearance on the Yacht Racing Life Podcast. Goodison needs very little introduction to most sailing fans. He is an Olympic gold medal winner in the Laser class, a three time Moth world champion and a veteran now of three America's Cup campaigns – the latest of which was his second go around with the New York Yacht Club's American Magic syndicate at the 37th Cup in Barcelona last year. Sadly things did not go as planned for him, as a serious accident aboard the American AC75 after racing early in the competition – in which he broke five ribs – ruled him out of any further participation. Despite this setback he was quickly back at the American Magic base doing whatever he could to help the team's progress through the Louis Vuitton Cup Challenger Series. The interview features some fantastic insider insight into American Magic's Barcelona campaign – including Goodison's working and personal relationship with co-helmsman and previous fierce Olympic rival Tom Slingsby – but begins with an update on his recovery and an explanation of exactly how the accident happened.

SERIES 2 EPISODE 7: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump. Friday, Microsoft said the Iranians would try to meddle in the election.  SATURDAY… YOUR campaign computers get hacked - you say. By the Iranians – you say. And you didn't report it to the FBII. Even though it's by Iran and part of your whole campaign scam, Trump, is that Iran is the root of all evil.  And you didn't report it to the F-B-I, and you didn't provide any evidence. Only yesterday, the FBI issued another anonymous, not even a spokesman's name attached to it, just like that No-He-Was-Too-Hit-By-A-Bullet announcement – gave a clear and compelling picture of the vast team that has fanned out across the country, across the internet, across the world to track down this evil. Quote: “We can confirm the FBI is investigating this matter.” Investigating… who? Investigating… what? Whether they were really hacked? Whether they were really hacked by the Iranians? Whether Trump made it all up? Whether the Trump campaign fell for some sort of phishing by a porn site? Also the material was supposed to hurt Trump? And was leaked to The Washington Post and Politico, which have repeatedly been helping Trump in this campaign? What's hurting Trump, and which the media is under-reporting, is that his polls are now cratering. Last week The New York Times had Kamala Harris ahead by 4 in each of the Rust Belt States. Now, Bullfinch Group for a site supposedly servicing independent voters: Harris by FOUR in Pennsylvania, by FIVE in Michigan, by NINE in Wisconsin. There's a tie in North Carolina. There's a lead of nearly three points at 538 and of more than half a point at the right-poisoned RCP poll of polls. And most staggeringly - and most undercovered - from The New York Times: “Two private polls conducted in Ohio recently by Republican poillsters – which Mr. Trump carried in 2020 with 53 percent of the vote – showed him receiving less than 50 percent of the vote against Ms. Harris in the state, according to a person with direct knowledge of the data.” Holy crap.  B-Block (31:40) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The unaided ease by which that Turkish guy won a shooting medal at the Olympics has the inevitable side effect. 27% of Brits tell pollsters that if they started now THEY could make the 2028 British Olympic team. The aforementioned LaCivita gets blown up by Matt Dowd over Swift Boating. And the tape CNN found from January 6th from the North Carolina candidate to run schools there, Michele Morrow. All it is is a demand that Trump conduct a military coup against then President-elect Biden. (41:50) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: In memory of WCBS Radio, the day its news director validated my entire existence as an aspiring 20-year old broadcaster. The saga of The Adler Letter. A little more than 100 years ago, a Scotsman by the name of Eric Liddell made a stand for the Lord's Day. It was a very public stand, since he was a member of the British Olympic team sent to the Paris Olympics of 1924, and his decision to honour the Lord's Day entailed not running in one of his chosen races (the 100m)–the heats for which were to be held on a Sunday–and training instead for the 400m (he also ran the 200m). While Liddell is well-known, the stand he took is one that many evangelicals today would deem unnecessary, even misguided. Many evangelicals do not consider Sundays to be particularly special or 'set-apart'. The observance of the Lord's Day as a special day of rest and worship has fallen on hard times in the churches. With Liddell's witness in mind, we explore the subject of the Christian Sabbath in this week's episode. Are Christians to observe Sundays as a special day of rest and worship? Are we called to obey the Fourth Commandment, along with the other nine? How does the Christian Lord's Day differ from the Jewish Sabbath? We touch on all these questions this week with contributions from David Campbell, W. J. Grier, and Rebecca Van Doodewaard.   Featured Content: – What Price Honouring God? "When I quit after college, I genuinely thought, ‘That's it. I'll never go back to track.' I just wish I'd heard more stories like mine where you take a huge break, get back into something that you love, and make it to a really high level… It's just nice to know that there's not one route to make it to the Olympics." Georgia Bell and I connected after she just ran 3:56.54 at the Monaco Diamond League to become the second-fastest British woman of all time over 1500m. She had shared that she's a fan of the show and I've been following her story closely this season and it's remarkable.  She quit track seven years ago after finishing up her college eligibility at Cal – but after dabbling in the duathlon, she decided to make a comeback this year. It has been nearly perfect as she has won the British 1500m indoor and outdoor national titles, finished 4th in the World Indoor Championship final, earned a European Championship silver medal and is now headed to the Olympic Games for Team GB. She did much of it in the beginning of the year while balancing a full-time job in cybersecurity. She trains under coach Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows and in the same training group that included Olympic silver medalist Keely Hodgkinson. Georgia explains how her training set-up works since she's still living in London most of the time and has to do much of her own training solo – while also still incorporating a bunch of biking. As a performance coach to England's national football team, the Royal Ballet and more, Eastwood taps into his Māori heritage to help groups foster a sense of togetherness and drive performance. For Allbirds co-founder and chief innovation officer Tim Brown, co-founder and chief innovation officer at Allbirds, a company that has gone on a rollercoaster of ups and downs since it IPO in 2021, his former life as a professional football player for New Zealand has taught him lessons he's brought from the pitch to the boardroom. “When we want to create a high performing environment, we make an undertaking to each other that we will do nothing to diminish the dignity of every person, and when we all leave this experience or whatever it is together, our dignity will be enhanced,” Eastwood told Brown stage at BoF VOICES 2023. “For me, therefore, you need to understand the story of the people you work with.”This week on The BoF Podcast, Brown and Eastwood unpack how companies can drive high performance while maintaining a supportive culture.Key Insights:While working with the British Olympic team, Eastwood encouraged the athletes to find a level of investment in their own story by creating a film which showcased various Olympians all the way back from 1896. “The Olympians themselves just took selfies the whole time with these images of those ancestors who they in particular could relate to, maybe something that shared their own identity story. I think it opened their eyes.”Allbirds was founded in 2024 with a mission to make sustainable footwear, but 10 years on, Brown said that he's learned how important it is to stay true to that internal story, both in communicating with employees and consumers. “As a creative person, as a storyteller, are we doing enough within our organisations to tell stories internally in the same way that we're telling them outside of the organisation?” he asked. Eastwood said those sorts of strong, dynamic, internal stories are key for everyone on a team. “You've got to create rituals and traditions where it's reiterated because actually it's not just for the benefit of new joiners, it's for the benefit of us who have been here a long time.” Additional resources The BoF Podcast | Allbirds' Tim Brown on Learning to Lead With ResilienceAllbirds Co-CEO On Why DTC Brands Are Going MultichannelAre DTC Brands Pulling Off Brick-and-Mortar? Today, we are delighted to welcome British Olympic legend Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill. An Olympic gold and silver medallist, European champion and 3x world champion, Jess competed at the highest level in the heptathlon for over a decade. Under the pressure and expectation that came with being the face of London 2012, Jess's gold medal at the Games will forever be one of the most iconic moments in British sporting history. For all the achievements on the track and in the public eye, there is so much more to her story. From starting a family while still competing, to founding her business, Jennis, developed off the back of her experiences as an athlete, Jess demonstrates how the role of the modern sportsperson is increasingly about far more than records, medals, and trophies.  In today's show, we discuss: The focus of the athlete: From starting out in athletics camps to entering elite competition, how the origin story can shape the outcome. Coping with pressure: what does it take to retain absolute control over performance when the outside noise gets louder. An athlete's relationship with winning and managing the disappointments when the result doesn't go your way. From winning a first major medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games to the disappointment of missing the Beijing Olympics through injury. London 2012 - from face of the games to winning gold, how did Jess deal with the pressure of public expectation while balancing the commercial duties that surrounded the build up to the Olympics. Motherhood & athletics: Marriage, children, performance: how do you fit all these together while ensuring you don't let the ball drop? Is it possible or do sacrifices need to be made? It is not expected that female athletes have children while competing, so what happens when you have a baby and don't want to retire?  What did Jess have to do to get back the elite level of performance she was so used to, and how did she have to adapt her regime to accommodate the changes she had gone through? The sports industry has a lot to learn when understanding the impact of pregnancy on the female body and challenges it presents when returning to elite competition. Why is this? Modern day role of the athlete: The value of the athlete has extended well beyond the field of play. How do professional sportspeople play an extended role in society today? How does Jennis seek to empower women at the elite end of sport and in the wider community? Why is it so important to build this education into the industry and beyond? The role of social media and exposure to brands is something that plays a significant part in the lives of the most successful athletes in today's world. Is this something they just have to learn to deal with or do they need additional support to manage effectively? Seeking investment in companies around women's health is a tough business, and educating the financial community on the opportunity to develop women's healthtech is crucial.

A Somali perspective on the Mo Farah story The British Olympic champion Sir Mo Farah made headlines this week after revealing that he was illegally brought to the UK as a child. He said he was given the name Mohamed Farah, and made to work as a domestic servant. BBC Somali's Sidiiq Burmad is based in Somaliland, where Sir Mo was born. Why have so many Jordanians lost faith in their government? A puppet, a prime minister and a pundit – they all feature in a report by BBC Arabic's Murad Shishani from his home country, Jordan. He was investigating recent survey results showing that trust in the government is the lowest it's been for more than a decade. He tells us what he found out. K-pop's plastic problem In the age of online streaming, K-pop fans still buy multiple physical CDs to get the promotions and merchandise attached to them. But now many are voicing concern about the environmental impact, and demanding a change in the behaviour of bands and fans. BBC Korean's Bugyeong Jung looked into the story. Bethany Shriever's win at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 gave the British Olympic team its first ever gold medal in BMX racing even though she had to launch a crowdfunding appeal to stand a chance of qualifying for the games. What does this latest award mean for her and BMX racing? In the wake of the Sarah Everard murder, Boris Johnson said he'd stop at nothing to jail more rapists' and promised to fix the system which means just 1.3% of cases result in a charge. Our reporter Melanie Abbott has been investigating new guidelines on evidence gathering issued by the Crown Prosecution Service and Emma Barnett talks to Sian Ruddick who is an independent sexual advisor who works with victims of sexual assault. In 1958, The Great Leap Forward was a campaign led by the Chinese Communist Party to reconstruct the country and its economy which resulted in mass starvation and famine. Thousands of people fled to the neighbouring state of Hong Kong, which was a British colony at the time and many children – often girls - living in overcrowded Hong Kong orphanages were adopted by British families in the sixties. We hear from two of those children Katherine Gordon and Debbie Cook and their remarkable start to life. After the DJ Tim Westwood faces multiple allegations of sexual misconduct - which he strenuously denies - we talk to Tamanna Rahman and BBC Producer Ruth Evans. Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason is a funny novel about mental illness and families and love of all sorts. Martha Friel is loved and hilarious and clever but she sometimes cries for days. When she was 17 she had a breakdown which has shadowed her life since then. At 40 she finally gets a diagnosis which helps her to understand why she is as she is. So why did Meg Mason decide not to name Martha's illness in the book? She explains her decision to Emma. Presenter: Emma Barnett Producer: Lisa Jenkinson Studio Managers: Tim Heffer & Michael Millham
