In this episode, we focus on the link between periodontal disease and the systemic effects on the human body. There's more to oral hygiene than just saving our teeth, so let's dive into this fascinating episode with Dr Reena Wadia to learn more about the importance of perio and how it is associated with the rest of our health. https://youtu.be/fldpB_8h2Dc Watch GF024 on Youtube Key Takeaways: There is a strong link between gum health and systemic health. Diabetes and cardiovascular disease are key conditions linked to gum health. Understanding correlation vs. causation is crucial in dental practice. Effective communication with patients can improve treatment outcomes. Treating pregnant patients for periodontal health is safe and beneficial. Proper diagnosis is essential for effective dental treatment. Patients are often unaware of the links between gum health and overall wellness. Motivating patients with health benefits can enhance compliance. Evidence-based dentistry is vital for accurate patient information. Add the word diagnosis to templates for clarity. Team collaboration (dental and medical practices) enhances patient care effectiveness. Screening for conditions like diabetes can save lives. Ever wondered when a fractured tooth in a canine patient should stay, or when it's time to extract? Discover the intricacies of root fractures and vital pulp therapy in this quick 13-minute episode!   Quick Summary: In this episode, Brett Beckman dives deep into key dental decisions faced by veterinarians, focusing on canine tooth fractures. He covers when to extract, signs of periodontal disease, and alternative treatments like root canals and vital pulp therapy. This informative episode will enhance your practice skills in veterinary dentistry.   Guest, Cast, and Crew Information: Host: Brett Beckman, Board Certified Veterinary Dentist Sponsored by: IVDI   Main Talking Points: Root fractures in canines – extraction vs. retaining the tooth. Periodontal disease and its impact on fractured teeth. Understanding lucency around fractured roots. When and how to use root canal or vital pulp therapy. Best practices for extraction with a mucoperiosteal flap.   Interesting Quotes: “If there's no lucency and no periodontal disease, a root fracture below the bone might never be an issue.” “Vital pulp therapy can save teeth, but timing is critical – ideally within 24-48 hours of the fracture.”   Timestamps: [00:00] – Introduction and opening. [01:30] – Monique's question: When to keep or extract a fractured tooth. [03:45] – Signs that a fractured tooth needs extraction. [05:50] – Vicko's question: Lucency and root canals. [11:50] – Carol's question: Root canal viability over time.     (Veterinary dentistry, canine tooth extraction, root fracture, periodontal disease, vital pulp therapy, root canal, veterinary dental procedures, lucency in teeth, tooth extraction in dogs)   Key Points Summary: Not all fractured teeth require extraction if there's no periodontal involvement or lucency. Proper diagnosis using radiographs and probing is key to decision-making. Vital pulp therapy can save teeth when treated within 24-48 hours post-fracture. Root canals are viable even years after fractures, provided radiographic evidence isn't severe.   Affiliate & Sponsor Links: Sponsored by: IVDI Link: IVDI.org/INV

Did you know that periodontal disease is more of an inflammatory one and less of an infection? Most of us dentists struggle to keep up with the latest advances in understanding of this complex disease and the treatment modalities proven to control it. That's why I interviewed Dr. William Levine, the Chief Scientific Officer of PeriActive and a specialist in periodontal disease and implantology. Dr. Levine explains why some dentists may need to take a new approach to the management of periodontal cases in their practices and explains how doing so is easier than you might think. We talk about how a very special formula he has developed could help providers treat periodontally involved patients with a reduced need for mechanical debridement. Stella Vnook, the Founder and President, and Bill Breitenbach, CEO of Oral Bio Life, talk about the prevalence and causes of periodontal disease and the limitations of current treatments. The Oral Bio Life PiezoGEL technology has shown effective removal of plaque and treatment of bacteria on teeth and regenerating bone for a long-term solution. Periodontal disease contributes to inflammation and infection and is showing links to other health conditions like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease. In addition to human trials, success is seen in trials with veterinarians to regenerate bone in dogs.  Stella Vnook elaborates, "Dentists can identify the early warning signs, but in addition to oral hygiene, we also found, and it's supported by data, there are some people who are predisposed to just having issues with their gums and/or periodontal disease. There are genetic implications, and there are people that have comorbidities. The goal is to remove the plaque and the bacteria film. But the process is rather painful. One of the reasons why I founded this technology and this company is because of the scaling and root planing, which is quite painful." Bill explains, "I'd like to add there's a real recognition lately from scientists around the world that inflammation is the root cause of a lot of major diseases - cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and even Alzheimer's. What they're finding is that the fibrous bacteria travel from the mouth throughout the body, contributing to heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy complications, cancer, and Alzheimer's. Just recently, there's some NIH data that shows that P. gingivitis, the main pathogen for chronic gum disease, has been identified in the brain of Alzheimer's disease patients. So, it's not just about gum disease, it's about total body health, and there is a need to be taking care of that and being mindful of the downstream effects of not taking care of periodontal disease." #OralBioLife #GumDisease #PeriodontalDisease #Inflammation #Veterinarians #BoneRegeneration oralbiolife.com Download the transcript here
