This week, the EAH team speaks with Jan Haizmann, one of the founders of the Zero Emissions Traders Alliance (ZETA) and an energy trading veteran expanding the enabling market tools and structures in Europe to the MENA region in order to facilitate exchange with the global market for net zero energy carriers like hydrogen and derivatives.About Jan Haizmann:Jan Haizmann is a qualified lawyer who has spent most of his career focused on building energy markets. In parallel, he established a boutique consulting group, Correggio NET, now based in Dubai. The European Commission has used Jan's services since 2010 to help build new energy market structures.Jan and Paul Van Son, the Chairman of Dii Desert Energy and ZETA, originally met in 1999 when Paul was the CEO of a Dutch utility. Together, they set out to build an energy wholesale market in Europe. They channeled this through the European Federation of Energy Traders (EFET). They built the association from scratch reaching 150 companies from 25 countries and became a key partner for the European Commission. Paul was the chairman of EFET until 2012, and Jan was one of the four key staff in the venture, as well as Board member for 15 years. Jan left EFET last year to set up the Dutch not-for profit foundation - Zero Emissions Traders Association (ZETA) with Dii Desert Energy including Paul and CEO Cornelius Matthes as well as Frank Wouters who leads MENA Hydrogen Alliance. Recognizing the market potential for sustainable energy in the GCC and more general MENA region, the group believes that the climate transition must be accelerated through market tools, in order to give proper credit for reduction and elimination of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. About ZETAFounded in 2023, ZETA develops market tools to assist traders, regional producers, exporters, and investors in carbon-neutral projects, as well as off-takers in the MENA region and beyond. By enabling local companies to hedge market risks from long-term contracts, ZETA makes sustainable investments safer and stimulates new investment.--Links:Zero Emissions Traders Alliance (ZETA)https://www.zeta-global.org/Dii Desert Energyhttps://dii-desertenergy.org/CorreggioNEThttps://www.correggionet.eu/European Federation of Energy Traders (EFET) renamed Energy Traders Europehttps://www.efet.org

As our planet grapples with the devastating effects of climate change, the indispensable role of environmental journalism becomes increasingly apparent. Yet, the right to cover environmental issues remains under siege, not least in Italy: In the last months of 2023, articles dedicated to the climate crisis in the main Italian newspapers decreased compared to the previous months.  At the same time, advertisements from polluting companies reached record levels, increasing the print media's dependency on them at a moment of historical low sales.  Meanwhile, in the evening TV news, “influenced by the Meloni government's impact on Rai” according to Greenpeace Italy, space for those opposing the ecological transition has doubled. David Barreto began to notice is hair thinning at the age of just 20, and by the time he was 22, this had began to be quite noticeable. He tried various treatments, but did not see any markable improvement. This led him to look into genetic hair loss, where he found that there has been a lot of research done that hadn't been put into use in commercial products. He wanted to bridge the gap between science and commercial products. He wanted to create products that used natural solutions, adding compounds found in nature, rather than chemicals or synthetic drugs to treat hair loss, as he found that compliance can be an issue with some medical alternatives, along with the health warnings and side effects putting people off or making them a non- viable option. He then began to create System K11, a science-led company, of which he is co-founder.Looking at  the driving forces behind genetic hair loss, he found studies that showed a correlation to the rate of hair loss and diet, researching into sugary drinks and type 2 diabetes as examples of how a dysregulated metabolism can have an effect on the mitochondrial rate of respiration which limits the amount of energy the hair follicles gain from the glycogen stores around the hair follicles. The appearance of the controversial draft law surprised even the working group that had been established specifically to help develop such a piece of legislation, causing uproar and criticism from international media freedom groups. This episode of the MFRR In Focus, we speak with Maja Sever, a respected Croatian journalist and the President of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), to take a deep dive into the draft law, to assess its most problematic elements and discuss what needs to change if it is to meet international standards and represent a boost for media freedom, rather than an unnecessary burden. Why can't Germany build enough homes?

The German government was elected with a plan to build 400,000 new homes a year – but it fell short last year by over 100,000. The country's house building industry is in crisis, with hundreds of companies going into liquidation this year as order books are emptying and demand for new homes has fallen. So why can't Germany build enough homes? A combination of high construction costs caused by inflation since the Covid pandemic, and increases in interest rates in recent years has produced a difficult business environment for a construction sector that is a significant part of the German economy. Along with falling demand, industry experts fear that regulations and bureaucracy are a factor in causing the crisis. Charmaine Cozier hears from: Dirk Salewski President of the German Housebuilding Federation who attended a recent summit hosted by Chancellor Olaf Scholz when the government announced a 14 point plan to revive housing construction. Alice Pitinni is the research director at Housing Europe, the European Federation of Public Co-operative and Social Housing and says there is a growing affordable housing crisis in Europe. Ireland has endured it's own housing crisis in the past - Michelle Norris, is professor of social policy at University College Dublin, and says Ireland has repeated some of Germany's mistakes. Jens Boysen-Hogrefe is a senior economist at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy – he says the country faces a tough situation, that worse is yet to come, but it is not a repeat of the post-reunification boom and bust of the 1990s. Agriculture is the lifeblood of rural communities across Europe, but its place at the heart of EU society cannot be taken for granted. Unless farming can attract new practitioners, our rural communities face long-term decline, which has knock-on effects for food security. Furthermore, agriculture can only attract a steady flow of newcomers if it offers a secure livelihood with decent working conditions and a reliable work-life balance. This latest podcast in the ‘Food for Europe' series looks at the social pillar of the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), and the way in which it seeks to strengthen the resilience of the communities and individuals on whom the stewardship of the countryside – and the production of our food – depends. The podcast looks at two core principles of the CAP social pillar: generational renewal and social conditionality. Our guests on this programme include: young farmers from Austria Johannes Schullern and Christina Proßepper, who recount their path to extra-familial farm succession as a way to enter the profession; Florian Jungreithmeier from Perspektive Landwirtschaft, which assisted Johannes and Christina to find a farm to take over; Doris Letina from the European Council of Young Farmers; Enrico Somaglia from the European Federation of Food, Agriculture and Tourism Trade Unions; and DG AGRI officials Margaret Bateson and María Gafo.

One unique way to help seniors feel great about themselves is via memory training. In this episode, Dana Steinova discusses her memory training approach based on mnemonics. Its power is in its ability to change the mindset of people who suffer from memory lapses and people who are giving up, accepting their memory problems as inevitable or something that belongs to the natural aging process. Her program convinces the participants that, in reality, they have tremendous mental potential. They activate special circuits in the brain that people unfamiliar with such techniques leave idle. The program works because cognitive and social effects are so connected. People learn to remember well and usually don't resist performing their new skills in front of family members or friends.Once people get proof that they can remember well, they start to approach any new information with a positive expectation that they will remember it, which affects the result. The outcome is that they minimize memory lapses in daily life. They do not need any calendar because they keep the entire year in their mind and can tell you what day of the week is any date in the current year. They can easily remember a shopping list with 150 items or any line of digits, and they improve their ability to remember faces and names. In this episode, participants will discover how to:Use mnemonics rather than memorization to make memories more durableMinimize memory lapses.Exercise new parts of the brain and build our brain reserve to help in the case of stroke, brain injury, or onset of dementia.About Dana Steinova:Dana Steinova travels the world training memory trainers. Based in Prague, she is a specialist in organizing educational activities. She is also the very active secretary general of the European Federation of Older People (EURAG), created in 1962, with 156 member associations in 33 European countries. She holds degrees from the Institute of Enlightenment, the Economics University, and the Charles University in Prague. She has, over the past 30 years, initiated a wide variety of programs, including the U3A movement in the Czech Republic (1986), reciprocal senior student exchanges with more than 42 exchanges within its first ten years (1991), and founding the first intergenerational non-vocational "University of Free Time" (1993) in the Czech Republic. She is fascinated by neuroscience and has been deeply involved with memory training since 1993. She founded the Czech Society for Memory Training and Brain Jogging in 1998 and later, the EURAG Memory Training Center in Prague in 2002 with the objective of making training opportunities available worldwide. Since then she has traveled the world extensively to achieve this objective. She organized the first National Day of Memory Training as a part of Brain Awareness Week, the worldwide event launched in 2005 by the DANA Alliance of the Brain and which takes place in March every year. In 2008 it became the National Week of Memory Training and has been growing ever since. Bérénice Lasfargues is Sustainability Integration Lead at BNP Paribas Asset Management. In this role, she is in charge of the implementation of the firm's ESG integration policy, working closely with portfolio managers across all asset classes to more purposefully integrate ESG criteria in their portfolios; and manages the internal firm-wide network of ESG Champions in investment teams. The changing regulatory environment is placing increasing importance on ESG data, and in her role, Bérenice works on the evolution of the firm's ESG research platform (including development of BNPP AM proprietary ESG rating and SDG data models) and provides strategic guidance on the optimal flow of ESG data through the company. She also coordinates the firm's approach to impact investment, and leads on its ESG analysis in the ICT sector.  She is the representative for BNPP AM's sustainable investment capabilities across the Americas, promoting the firm's expertise with clients and externally across the region. Previously, she worked at the OECD, undertaking economic research on green and blended finance. She was also a legislative fellow in the U.S. House of Representatives and conducted fieldwork on climate change and development in emerging markets. Bérénice holds masters' degrees in engineering and environmental management from Ecole Centrale Paris (now CentraleSupelec) and the National University of Singapore, respectively. She is an EFFAS CESGA (Certified ESG Analyst) certificate holder. Bérénice joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: Why asset managers are looking so closely at sustainability and ESG goals BNP Pams sustainability investment beliefs and four standard pillars Challenges with ESG rating systems How ESG data could become more valuable Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals  Bérénice's Final Five Questions Responses What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? One piece of advice would be to get involved or keep up as much as you can with collaborative working groups and networks. Depending on your focus area or sector, there are so many. For example, if you are within the investment management industry, you could get involved with Principles for Responsible Investment, the Global Impact Investing network, or the Initial Investors Group on Climate Change, just to name a few. I was collectively marched towards mainstreaming sustainability for more cognitive diversity to solve common challenges and raise the bar across the board. So number one is get involved. Number two would be to put in the work into the training and knowing your stuff on sustainability. It may seem from the outside, the ESG landscape is a bit fuzzy. We just talked about the fact that the market is fragmented. But ESG is now part of a firm's license to operate. Therefore there is a need to engage and upscale your workforce on this topic. There are great trainings that exist, the CFA Institute, the Fundamentals for Sustainability Accounting from SASB, the European Federation of Financial Society also has a training. Within BNP Pam we have a network of ESG champions. Each client and investment facing team has one, and they're required to get some formal certification on ESG. So it starts with people and upscaling your people so they have expertise to make the right judgment calls. Maybe a final one would be: develop your leadership skills as they relate to change management. All ESG jobs at the moment, unless you're working at a pure player firm, and even then, involve some element of persuasion and winning hearts and minds. ESG is a journey, and along the journey you will need people and you will need to be able to convince people in other parts of the firm on the foundation of ESG. That is what change management is all about.  What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? The momentum of the space, but also the increased scrutiny from a new set of stakeholders- regulators, retail, investors, consumers- clearly they shine the light on the fact that we have made so much progress. But there is still so much progress that we still need to make. In the current environment, there is a strong and very important push against greenwashing and that is welcome. I think it will make us only better as practitioners. What is one book you would recommend sustainability professionals read? One short book, which is really a call to action, would be On Impact: A Guide to the Impact Revolution by Sir Ronald Cohen. This book is kind of a prelude of sorts to this much longer book titled Impact: Reshaping Capitalism to Drive Real Change. So you can either read the short manifesto or the longer book depending on your bandwidth. But both books talk about the advent of the impact entrepreneurs and the potential paradigm shift from the risk return equation to a risk return impact equation in investment analysis, and also from measuring activities and inputs to measuring outcomes. Also how at each level as consumers; citizens, employers, we can facilitate this transition in thinking on impact investing. Another book, I have to confess I'm only halfway through, but another book which I find very interesting is Moving Beyond Portfolio Theory by Jon Lukomnik James Hawley. We truly look at how modern portfolio theory has been instrumental in shaping traditional investment but also how it falls short in terms of including a consideration of systemic risk and market ecosystem impact. So that's a very tall order, tackling modern portfolio theory. That's what you're trying to do in this book. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? In terms of resources, keeping up with market developments related to ESG investing. There are a few newsletters and resources that I would say most of us in the industry tend to read. There is Responsible Investors, Environmental Finance, Bloomberg Green, the Financial Times Moral Money newsletter just to name a few. Another resource for us is academia as well as looking at work done by international organizations, such as the IEA, the OCE or the World Bank Group. We at BMP Pam are a founding supporter of GRAFSI, which is the Global Research Alliance for Sustainable Finance and Investments. It is a global network of leading research universities founded in 2017 that aims to develop academic collaboration on the topic and they have aan annual conference. The next one is in September at the University of Zurich and next year will be at Yale university in September 2023. I think one of the reasons we are very keen to support academia is that as sustainable investment practitioners in such a growing and emerging field, we really need to rely on high quality academic research to make sense of this ESG alphabet to support development of new methodologies, as well as inform development of our new policies in a way that is transparent. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and your work being done at BNP? They can find information regarding our approach to sustainability on our corporate website https://group.bnpparibas/en/. On it you can find global sustainability strategy, all our policies on integration, stewardship, regulatory documentation. We have a sustainability report but also have profiled members of our firm on what it means for them in the day to day sustainable investor for a changing world. I can also be reached out to directly on LinkedIn and Twitter.

The print version will be mailed in late July, along with the regular June issue. The result of this landmark gathering is a redesigned disease classification framework that guides comprehensive treatment planning and allows for a personalized approach to patient care. Highlights from the updated classification include a multi-dimensional staging and grading system for periodontitis classification, a recategorization of various forms of periodontitis, and the inaugural classification for peri-implant diseases and conditions. Consequences of Periodontitis:  Untreated gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. With time, plaque can spread and grow below the gum line. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums and stimulate a chronic inflammatory response in which the body essentially turns on itself, and the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed. Gums separate from the teeth, forming pockets between the teeth and gums that can become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. Eventually, teeth can become loose and may fall out or need to be removed. Periodontitis diagnosis is typically classified by stage and grade. After your periodontist conducts a thorough assessment of your unique case, he or she may assign a stage ranging from initial to severe that describes the acuteness of disease. Additionally, your periodontist may assign a grade which communicates the rate of disease progression and anticipated response to treatment.

Yevheniy Sakun, Viktor Dedov, Brent Renaud, Pierre Zakrzewski, Oleksandra Kuvshynova & Oksana Baulina all lost their lives while covering the Russian offensive. A quarter of all journalists killed worldwide since the start of the year. What efforts are made by organisations such as the European Federation of Journalists and Brussels Press Club to support journalists and reporters in Ukraine? What measures can the international community implement to provide assistance to journalists covering the invasion? And what more can be done to protect journalists in the country and in exile?
