During the upcoming OWASP Global AppSec EU in Barcelona, Spyros Gasteratos, long-time OWASP contributor and co-founder of Smithy, to explore how automation, collaboration, and community resources are shaping the future of application security. Spyros shares the foundation of his talk at OWASP AppSec Global: building a DevSecOps program from scratch using existing community tools—blending technical guidance with a celebration of open-source achievements.Spyros emphasizes that true progress in security stems not from an ever-growing stack of tools, but from aligning the humans behind them. According to him, security failures often stem from fragmented information and misaligned incentives across teams. His solution? Bring the teams together with a shared, streamlined flow of information and automate wherever possible to reduce wasted cycles and miscommunication. At the core of Spyros' philosophy is the need to turn AppSec from a blocker into a builder. Rather than overwhelming developers with endless bug reports, or security leaders with red dashboards, programs need to reflect the actual risk appetite of the business—prioritizing issues dynamically based on impact, timing, and operational goals. He challenges the one-size-fits-all approach, advocating instead for tagging systems that defer certain risks and encode organizational priorities in automation logic.A major part of that transformation lies in Smithy, the platform he's helping build. It's designed to be “Zapier for security”—an automation engine rooted in open-source standards that allows for custom workflows without creating a tangle of fragile scripts. The idea is to let teams focus on what's unique to them, while relying on battle-tested components for the rest.Looking ahead, Spyros doesn't buy into the doom-and-gloom narrative about AI limiting developer creativity. On the contrary, he argues that AI-enabled coding frees up cognitive space for better architecture and secure design thinking. In his view, creativity doesn't die—it just shifts from syntax to strategy. This episode is more than a discussion—it's a blueprint for how teams can rally around a common goal, and how OWASP's community can be the catalyst. Tune in to hear how open-source, automation, and human alignment are redefining AppSec from the ground up.GUEST: Spyros Gasteratos | OpenCRE co-lead and Founder of smithy.security | https://www.linkedin.com/in/spyr/HOST: Sean Martin, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine and Host of Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast | https://www.seanmartin.comSPONSORSManicode Security: https://itspm.ag/manicode-security-7q8iRESOURCESSpyros' Session: A completely pluggable DevSecOps programme, for free, using community resources (https://owasp2025globalappseceu.sched.com/event/1whCB/a-completely-pluggable-devsecops-programme-for-free-using-community-resources)Learn more and catch more stories from OWASP Global AppSec EU 2025 Conference coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/owasp-global-appsec-barcelona-2025-application-security-event-coverage-in-catalunya-spainCatch all of our event coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/technology-and-cybersecurity-conference-coverageWant to tell your Brand Story Briefing as part of our event coverage? In this episode, we delve into Turkey's unique approach to mediation in its foreign policy. Our discussion uncovers how historical traditions, regional ambitions, and contemporary challenges have shaped Turkey's role as a mediator. From its initial engagements in Iraq and Iran to its involvement in the Balkans, Central Asia, and Africa, Turkey's mediation efforts have evolved significantly. We explore the influence of the Ottoman Empire's negotiation practices, the impact of the 1990s geopolitical shifts, and Turkey's strategic positioning as an honest broker free from colonial baggage. The episode also highlights the personalistic turn in Turkey's mediation under the Justice and Development Party, examining both the successes and limitations of this approach. Join us as we discuss Turkey's mediation in Bosnia, Kosovo, Somalia, and Somaliland, and the broader implications for its foreign policy and international standing. This episode also offers a comprehensive understanding of the human capital involved, and the ongoing challenges in achieving sustainable peace.

Dr. Spyros Papapetropoulos is the President and CEO of Bionomics, a biotech company focused on central nervous system disorders, particularly social anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorders. Social anxiety is a disease primarily of adolescents and young adults, and the social isolation during COVID contributed to a rise in the number of people experiencing this condition. The Bionomics drug in development is BNC210, a therapeutic that can be taken on schedule an hour before conducting an activity likely to induce anxiety. Spyros elaborates, "Social anxiety disorder is actually known as social phobia, and it's very different, because everyday interactions cause significant anxieties. And they're very situational, so you become very self-conscious. You feel embarrassed and have a fear of being scrutinized or judged negatively by others. It is considered a very, very important chronic mental health condition that, if left untreated, leads to comorbid depression, even suicidality, and addiction down the road." "BNC210 acts on nicotinic receptors. These are receptors that are expressed or found in areas of the brain. The alpha-7 nicotinic receptors are found primarily in areas that control emotions, so in areas that are considered brain anxiety generators. I don't know how much your audience has heard about the amygdala, but the amygdala is considered one of the most important areas, also responsible for fight or flight, for instance. And it's an area of the brain that has received a lot of attention. So BNC210 binds to the alpha-7 receptors found in the amygdala and reduces the activity or the activation of the amygdala, which is abnormally high in anxiety-related disorders." #Bionomics #SocialAnxietyDisorder #SocialPhobia #CNSDisorders #PTSD bionomics.com Listen to the podcast here

In this episode I'm getting interviewed by Spyros Tsoukalas (Head of BD at GrowthMentor) and we talk through how to navigate through marketing chaos by prioritizing marketing efforts for early stage startups. I've been a mentor on GrowthMentor for 8 months and have really enjoyed having 1:1 conversations with founders and marketers that have very specific marketing and growth questions related to what they're building and I can spend 30 minutes just helping them out. It's a wonderful community and I highly recommend it whether you're a founder/marketer looking for help or a mentor looking to help. Main topics we cover: The problem with startups' approach to marketing efforts; What to do instead, how to prioritize your marketing; What types of things should be done first, second, etc; How marketing buzzwords confuse founders and marketers and how to think about it instead. This panel explored the interconnectedness of Turkey's domestic and foreign politics over the past two decades. How do geopolitical histories and imaginaries affect Turkey's foreign policy? What are the links between everyday culture and Turkey's foreign policy? To what extent have global and regional developments impacted on and informed domestic politics? In what ways has foreign policy been used as a technique of governance? Evren Balta is Professor of International Relations and chair of the International Relations Department at Özyeğin University. She is the author of 'The American Passport in Turkey: National Citizenship in the Age of Transnationalism' (with O Altan-Olcay, UPenn, 2020), 'Age of Uneasiness' (İletisim, 2019) and 'Global Security Complex' (İletisim, 2012). She is the editor of 'Neighbors with Suspicion: Dynamics of Turkish-Russian Relations' (with G. Ozcan and B. Besgul, İletisim, 2017); 'Introduction to Global Politics' (Iletisim, 2014) and 'Military, State and Politics in Turkey' (with I. Akca, Bilgi University Press, 2010). She served as a research fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences/Russia in Global Dialogue Program (Vienna, Austria 2017) and as a Fulbright visiting associate professor at New York University, Program in International Relations during the 2017-2018 academic year. Balta is a senior scholar at Istanbul Policy Center, a member of the Global Relations Forum and co-editor of International Relations Journal. She was appointed as the academic coordinator of TÜSİAD Global Politics Forum in 2021. Lisel Hintz is an Assistant Professor of International Relations at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University and was visiting assistant professor at Barnard College, Columbia University. She studies the arenas in which struggles over various forms of identity – e.g., national, ethnic, religious, gender – take place. Her regional focus is on Turkey and its relations with the Middle East, Europe, and the US. Her 2018 book 'Identity Politics Inside Out: National Identity Contestation and Foreign Policy in Turkey' (Oxford University Press) examines how Turkey's Justice and Development Party (AKP) used foreign policy gambits to weaken its domestic obstacles and open up space for disseminating its own Ottoman Islamist understanding of Turkish national identity and, ultimately, the ways in which contestation over national identity spills over to shape and be shaped by foreign policy. Her current book project, under contract with Cambridge University Press, investigates Turkey's state-society struggles over identity in the pop culture sphere. Her work also appears in journals and news outlets contributing to discussions on Turkey's increasing authoritarianism, opposition dynamics, foreign policy shifts, and identity-related topics including Kurdish, Alevi, and gender issues. Spyros A. Sofos is a Researcher at the LSE Middle East Centre. Seran Demiral interviews Spyros Spyrou one more time shifting the conversation this time from the politics of childhood to the challenges and opportunities of participation practices. While Demiral questions possibilities of researching with children and the potential of their becoming primary researchers, Spyrou brings in critical perspectives on methodology in childhood studies related to access to participation, the diverse capabilities of research subjects and the different ways through which to reveal their experiences. "We are both in a quest. We are partners in this quest, both the coach and the coachee, and when we have this quest it is something that unites us." Spyros Gousetis. Spyros Gousetis and I talk about becoming the best version of ourselves. Becoming the best human being that we can be - personally and professionally. Spyros compares this journey to a virtual computer game - as we learn we go up a level. We learn skills and competencies but we also have to learn about ourselves, our inner world. One way to do this is to understand how we think. Evaluating our own thinking style Spyros says is like tickling yourself: you know what to do but you just can't do it and so you stop. This is where a coach can help. A coach becomes your thinking partner, a thinking partner who helps you to think purposefully and helps you determine your choices. Spyros also explains that all beliefs, or limiting beliefs, fall under three categories: possibility (it is not possible to do that) ability (I cannot do that) and self worth (I don't deserve that). We talk about motivation, discipline, habits, action and how Aikido is like coaching. Spyros Gousetis is an international executive and business life coach and NLP practitioner, former corporate board member and strategic consultant. He has 20+ years of Europe and Middle East corporate business experience, in Strategic Marketing and Business Development, spanning Foods, Personal Wash and Skin with Unilever, Consumer Electronics with Sony. Driven, motivated with sense of humour, curiosity and a bias for learning. Ability to influence within C-suite, critical thinker and Board facilitator. Comprehensive knowledge of the human and operational strategies required to succeed in sectors with rapidly changing competition and technologies leading to Business Model Innovation and Digital Transformation.
