This is Kelly Orchard's Apple A Day. Sixty Seconds on wisdom, success and personal growth, and your growth begins with yourself. According to Dr. Kristin Neff, “Self-compassion involves acting the same way towards yourself when you are having a difficult time, fail, or notice something you don't like about yourself. Instead of just ignoring your pain with a “stiff upper lip” mentality, you stop to tell yourself “this is really difficult right now,” how can I comfort and care for myself in this moment?” Instead of heartlessly judging and condemning yourself for various inadequacies or shortcomings, self-compassion means you are kind to yourself and understanding when threatened with personal failings – after all, who ever said you were supposed to be perfect? There are three elements of self –compassion. They are: Self-kindness Common humanity Mindfulness Grow with self-compassion today. This is Kelly Orchard's Apple A Day. Sixty Seconds on wisdom, success and personal growth. Socrates said, “Know Thyself”. Personal and professional growth begins with yourself, and knowledge of who and what you are all about is critical. I have spent nearly my entire life trying to understand myself. I started writing a journal as a teenager and often go back and read passages from my youth. It allows me to truly know myself, as the words, thoughts and events I write are usually raw emotions and ideas of those current events. At the time, I am realizing that I really do not know what the future holds. “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” Today, we're focusing on self-knowledge, and for me, that includes wisdom. “Wisdom begins with wonder,” another quote from Socrates, and again, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Examine your life, your thoughts, ideas and actions. Know thyself and you'll begin to understand how wise you are becoming. For me, knowing myself is one of my biggest assets, as it has helped me stay focused on a path toward success. This is Kelly Orchard's Apple A Day. Sixty Seconds on wisdom, success and personal growth. We're focusing on how growth begins with yourself. Self-control is the quality that allows you to stop yourself from doing things you want to do but that might not be in your best interest. For example, without self-control, you might burp and curse nonstop. “Have you ever had a potato chip or two and pretty soon you've eaten the whole bag? Eating a whole bag of chips shows little self-control. Not charging an expensive thing you want to a credit card takes self-control. Getting up early for work takes self-control. Without self-control, it's hard to get far in life. Self-control is similar to self-discipline.” http://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/self-control According to Psychology Today, “Self-control separates us from our ancient ancestors and the rest of the animal kingdom. Rather than responding to immediate impulses, we can plan, we can evaluate alternative actions, and we can refrain from doing things we'll regret. We can also take advantage of these innately human abilities by developing wisdom and willpower.” Self- Control is an important component of your personal and professional growth. It's time for you to begin putting it into practice. This has been Kelly Orchard's Apple A Day…Now, go out and be fruitful. Kelly Orchard's Apple A Day is also available in print. This is Kelly Orchard's Apple A Day. Sixty Seconds on wisdom, success and personal growth. Self Esteem is one of the most difficult parts of yourself to measure. Some have high esteem, but most have low esteem. What is Self-Esteem? Psychology Today says: “Possessing little self-regard can lead people to become depressed, to fall short of their potential, or to tolerate abusive situations and relationships. Too much self-love, on the other hand, results in an off-putting sense of entitlement and an inability to learn from failures. Furthermore, “Most of us wish we could improve certain things about ourselves. Lasting change is difficult though—many of our habits are deeply ingrained, and certain core personality attributes may be immutable. But even the oldest of habits and character traits can be altered to various degrees, as it's never too late to change; with effort and determination, it is possible to be the person you want to be.” Today, we're growing our self-esteem.  This has been Kelly Orchard's Apple A Day…Now, go out and be fruitful. According to an article in Psychology Today, “self-love is an action not a state of feeling good.” When you are feeling low, feeling defeated or like a failure, people often say, “Why don't you love yourself?” or tell you that you cannot love anyone else until you love yourself. But how do you love yourself? Here are 8 tips: Become mindful. Know what it is that you think, feel and want. Act on what you need rather than what you want. Love yourself by taking good care of yourself; eat healthy, sleep, exercise and create more social interactions. Set quality boundaries. Set limits at work and in your personal relationships. Protect yourself. Don't allow the enemy to get the best of you! Forgive yourself. Live with intention. Make plans to live your life with purpose. Stop comparing yourself to others. One of my favorite musicals is the 1948 American film, “Easter Parade” starring Judy Garland and Fred Astaire. There's a scene where Judy's character is auditioning to be a star dancer with Fred Astaire and he challenges her to make men smile at her. Knowing that she wasn't the type of beauty that would make men take a second look, as she walked along the sidewalk away from Astair's character, she made a silly face, with crossed eyes and puckered lips to get some attention. It didn't take long before the men walking by were smiling and looking back at her as they passed. No matter how you make a habit to make someone smile, try it. Mother Teresa says that, “Peace begins with a smile.”   Here's a cute poem by Karen McLendon-Laumann, “Smiling is infectious, you catch it like the flu, When someone smiled at me today, I started smiling too.”  Make a habit to make someone smile. The reason for this is because you are not going to survive if you aren't taking care of yourself. Rely on yourself, and you will grow. If you rely on somebody else to take care of you, your feelings, your needs, your wants, your goals… well, you'll always be disappointed. Mindfulness is all the buzz lately, a term that we often mistake as being “careful”, but what really does it mean to be “mindful”? The dictionary defines mindfulness as: “a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.” There are so many books about how to be mindful through meditation, eating, working, listening – honestly, there is no shortage of information about being aware of your present circumstances. But, does awareness always mean “enjoyment”? Nobody can be continuously happy all of the time, but you can “enjoy” the moments. Even the one's that are difficult. Enjoy them because they are making you stronger, wiser and you are growing! Enjoy the precious ones, however small. Be mindful. In fact, I recently read that as soon as somebody says, “I promise”, that is the beginning of a lie. Do you believe that? I know that when I make a promise, I keep it. But I've also learned that there are times when a promise is going to be broken, but I find that I make less promises that I'm unable to keep, because I limit that commitment. There is a beautiful quote from the book, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, “Sometimes people don't understand the promises they're making when they make them. But you keep the promise anyway. When I talk to people who say, “Oh, well- I'm too busy for…(fill in the blank), I wonder what they are actually avoiding? I remember a college professor and friend of mine was always busy. She was busy teaching multiple classes at multiple colleges. She was busy with her grown children and grandchildren. She appeared to have achieved so much success. But there was something missing. I remember asking her, “Why do you keep yourself so busy? Is to avoid the reality that you are lonely?” Tears began to well up in her eyes. “Yes,” she replied. “I don't have a relationship that is significant to me.” Whatever it is that we want, yet do not have – is what we strive for. When we create such a busy life, we neglect the wants we really have. Don't let yourself get so busy that you don't make time for love, for family, for relaxation, for FUN! What about 10 bad moments? 20 bad moments? 50 bad moments? Whatever is happening, if it's negative, its only one moment on your tree. Maybe it'll be a hundred moments, but think about the entire span of your life – and all those leaves that grow on the tree. If you consider that moments are just leaves on your tree of life, then you can consider that, “okay, there is always going to be a bad moment here and there, but in the bigger scheme of things, the bigger picture, each moment is just one leaf on this massive tree that you are continually growing. And, you know, just like when the fall comes, and the winter comes, those leaves fall off. So those moments, those bad moments, can be forgotten if you let them. We're focusing on 30 days of growth with gratitude and Thanksgiving. “Never let success get to your head. Never let failure get to your heart.” What are your strengths? Has anyone ever pointed them out to you, or have you ever thought to discover what you're really good at? I'm good at writing, dancing, being creative, helping people, coming up with solutions to problems. I'm not very crafty however, nor do I enjoy spending a lot of time in the kitchen. Some people do. And I envy them. Those aren't my strengths. I am however thankful for my strengths that I do acknowledge. Make a list of your strengths. And then be grateful for each and every one of them. Don't compare yourself to other people and their strengths. “Stop hating yourself for everything that you aren't. Start loving yourself for everything that you are.” Be grateful for the strengths you have. This is been Kelly Orchard's Apple a day… Now go out and be fruitful. I think that I have always been called brave, for a number of reasons. I remember a few years ago, after I had recovered from a serious illness with my heart, I volunteered to dance for a charity event. My dance partner and I worked very hard choreographing a dance number and creating unique costumes for this function. When our performance was over, an acquaintance shared with me how cute she thought the dance was and then she called me brave. I wasn't sure how to respond to her. Was I brave to be out there dancing? Was I brave to wear the costume that I did? My perspective was; I was grateful that I was healthy enough again to be able to dance on stage. Yes I was older than my previous years dancing on stage; I was heavier than I was would have liked to have been, but I was grateful that I was healthy enough to dance. As you age, be brave; be bold; be thankful for what you have. Today is a gift. Don't let anything stop you from being brave. This is been Kelly Orchard's Apple a day… Now go out and be fruitful. Are you grateful for our own personal growth? When you were a kid, and somebody hadn't seen you for a while, you might hear them say, “Look at how you've grown!” We even do that when we watch our plants grow, we watch our bank accounts grow, we watch our communities and churches grow; we get so happy and so proud when they've grown. My personal philosophy is, that is the purpose of life. Growth. Be grateful for your experiences that cause you to grow. We grow from struggles, trials, failures, and a multitude of life experiences. Try not to look at it as weakness. Look inside and be grateful for how you are growing emotionally, mentally, spiritually. Now, that is where that growth truly begins. And remember, “Be grateful for people in your life who truly love you, motivate you, encourage you, inspire you, enhance you and make you happy. If you have people who do none of that, let them go!” This is been Kelly Orchard's Apple a day… Now go out and be fruitful. Kelly Orchard's Apple A Day is also available in print. I recently facilitated a Women's retreat with some colleagues. All of us brought something different to the table; mental health psycho – education, spirituality, physical health and art as a therapeutic exercise.   As the participants worked on their paintings, I saw them all come to life. The artist described their brush strokes in such a way that resembles life. She said, “Don't be so rigid, let yourself go free, allow for some messiness, it only makes your painting more unique.”   I shared with the group how it resembles life. ..... Be grateful for those moments that teach you lessons. The messiness. As Caroline Myss wrote, “The soul always knows what to do to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind.”   And everyone's painting, although stemming from a similar model, had uniquely their own creation. It was beautiful. And a little messy. Be grateful for detours on your daily adventure. You never know what kind of blessing is just around the corner. Not too long ago, I had a meeting in Los Angeles. “What can we learn from this?” asked the young Starbucks Barista. When I got to the counter to get a cup of coffee, my frustration must've been written all over my body language. I shared my tale of a dead cell phone, that my car charger had failed and I had no clue where my destination was. I was completely relying on the kindness of strangers for help. A cellular store was charging my phone and the Starbucks Crew gave me a safe place to land. What did I learn? Number one – Always print your directions if you're prone to getting lost like I am. Number two – Be thankful for detours that provide for adventure. I made it to my destination, a little late – but with a great story to tell that created dialogue for bonding and relationship building. Is happiness something you can chase, or is it foolish to even try? I found some interesting snippets of information in Psychology Today. This little nugget came from a 2013 issue. “Everything in moderation,” cautions a psychologist at the University of California, Riverside. It's fine to want to be happier – as long as it doesn't slide into an obsession. Don't keep thinking: is this working? Am I happy? Put your effort into being a kinder person, improving your relationships, and savoring daily pleasures.” It's hard to think happy thoughts every moment of the day, so try just being a kinder person. For example: today I held the door open for somebody walking into the gym. It made me feel better, and it was an act of kindness that wasn't asked for. And it made be happy. Will you try it? But don't mistake gratitude for an IOU. Don't feel obligated to repay the favor. It's not about keeping score; that will just foster negative feelings between you and the other person. Be kind, because it makes you happy. This has been Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day… Now go out and be fruitful. Kelly Orchard's Apple A Day is also available in print. Click here for more!

When you achieve success at something, whether it's work or at home or at school, make sure that you thank the people that helped you get there. Whenever I see somebody giving a speech for an award that they won, it's so rewarding to see them speak kind words about those who helped them get to that point in their career or level of achievement. We often forget those that we've left behind when we achieve success. Try thanking somebody today for helping you get to where you are. But, while you're at it, make sure to give yourself some credit where credit is due, don't sell yourself short. The desire to show humility, can often be misinterpreted as low self-esteem. Tryon Edwards said, “True humility is not an abject, groveling, self- despising spirit; it is the right estimate of ourselves as God sees us.” So be grateful for your achievements, and thank those who helped you along the way. If you think positive thoughts; positive things will come to you. Practicing gratitude and thankfulness will help keep you positive. It also changes the chemistry in your brain. Consider your brain to be a muscle. It takes practice to be positive and thankful daily. Here's a list on how to be thankful every day. Start with just one thing. Is it possible to overdo thankfulness? When I am working with a client that struggles with sadness, depression, anxiety, or other life issues, I encourage them to start a gratitude journal. I encourage them to start out slowly, start small, look for the little things to be thankful for. It could be low price of gas, or catching all the green lights on the way the office, or simply having a nice cup of coffee in the morning. Is it possible to overdo it? According to some advice I found in Psychology Today, there was a study that was done and it was discovered that people who track to their gratitude once per week experienced increased happiness; but those who track the gratitude three times per week did not. It went on to say that the possibility of running out of things to write, counterproductively, make you feel like you don't have much to be grateful for. Everything in moderation! Look for the small things to be thankful for, and be realistic. This has been Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day… Now go out and be fruitful. Kelly Orchard's Apple A Day is also available in print. Seek growth and your purpose will find you. Seek gratitude and you'll find happiness. Do you wonder what your purpose is? I often work with clients who are seeking their life purpose. That totally makes sense. No matter what your age, we're always seeking something new. My philosophy is this; if you're constantly, perpetually promoting your personal growth, you're going to know your purpose. Because your purpose is to continue to grow. Your purpose may change from day to day, month to month, or year to year. When you're younger, your purpose might be “I'm supposed to be a mother” or “I'm supposed to be in this career” or “I'm supposed to do this”. And then you go through a growth spurt and your purpose changes. Your purpose is not really as big a mystery as you think. If you're seeking growth, your purpose will find you. I navigated my way, and learned about networking and the importance of meeting other people in my early 20s and had the experience of being what might be called a ‘big fish in a little pond'; well, what would be considered a little pond back in those days. Fast forward almost 20 years later and I restarting over in a new community where nobody knew me, and I'm repeating the things that I had learned. Meanwhile, I'm also restarting in the national and international forum and arena with social media and getting my name and my experiences out there. Begin by counting your blessings. What are the things you are thankful for? Make a note of it. I start my day off writing in my journal, in my cozy chair, with a hot cup of coffee, with hazelnut creamer, and begin to write some words of gratitude. I love the slow starts of my day. I make a list of things I was grateful for the day before, and I make a mental note to look for things to be grateful for all day long. This has worked for me for years. I encourage all my clients to keep a gratitude journal. Now you may not have time to sit with a cup of coffee and have a slow morning like I do, you may appreciate being able to jot down a note on a Post-it, or in your notepad on your smart phone, or even record yourself a message.
