We can almost hear the category 5 election year hurricane that's about to roar over the horizon. Paul Rosenberg says, he'll need reasons to believe the next vote count. Barry Brownstein explains why ordinary people enable totalitarians. A Charlie Brown Christmas has aired on TV every single year since it was produced in 1965. This is Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day. Sixty seconds on wisdom, success, and personal growth. We're focusing on 30 days of growth with gratitude and Thanksgiving. Be thankful for downtime. Be thankful for opportunities to spend relaxing and loving and playing. We live in a cult of busy-ness. Somehow, the idea that being too busy means we are achieving success and our dreams! When I talk to people who say, “Oh, well- I'm too busy for…(fill in the blank), I wonder what they are actually avoiding? I remember a college professor and friend of mine was always busy. She was busy teaching multiple classes at multiple colleges. She was busy with her grown children and grandchildren. She appeared to have achieved so much success. But there was something missing. I remember asking her, “Why do you keep yourself so busy? Is to avoid the reality that you are lonely?” Tears began to well up in her eyes. “Yes,” she replied. “I don't have a relationship that is significant to me.” Whatever it is that we want, yet do not have – is what we strive for. When we create such a busy life, we neglect the wants we really have. Don't let yourself get so busy that you don't make time for love, for family, for relaxation, for FUN! When we all get to the end of our lives…. We won't be saying, I wish I would have spent more time working, or slaving away at my computer, or …. You get the idea. This is Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day. Sixty seconds on wisdom, success, and personal growth. We're focusing on 30 days of growth with gratitude and Thanksgiving. What seeds have been planted in your mind? Do you celebrate success, or do you beat yourself up when something doesn't work out right? Zig Ziglar says “people often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing, that's why we recommend it daily.” When you start your day, is it possible that you start out thinking negative seeds in your garden? Practicing gratitude daily, will plant positive seeds in your mind, in your heart, in your business life, and in your personal life. It's time to celebrate the harvest of all your good work. Negative seeds need to be weeded out. Only water the positive seeds. “If you are feeling down, speak up. You don't need to go through it alone.” I am a student of my own experience. Growth is my focus. Growth is my philosophy. I'm thankful for all of my experiences, the good, the bad, the ugly, and the opportunities to celebrate! This is Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day. Sixty seconds on wisdom, success, and personal growth. We're focusing on 30 days of growth with gratitude and Thanksgiving. Vincent Van Praagh teaches, “Life is about change and growth. Have the courage to step out of self- imposed expectations and try a brand new experience.” Have you suffered a failure or crisis recently? Making a comeback after a crisis; whether it's a failed business, or a failed relationship, or failing health, is definitely challenging. What do you do when it seems as though everyone else's life and career path has been always going uphill? They talk about all of their successes and where they're at and how they've won all these awards and you're still struggling to find out how you come back after a crisis? Your priorities are changed, and your focus is different, and you think that maybe you want to change careers. When you discover this, understand it takes time. Don't compare yourself to others success or how their life is going, because you never know what's just around the corner for that individual either or where they've been to get to where they are today. Be grateful for your own experience. This has been Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day… Now go out and be fruitful. Kelly Orchard's Apple A Day is also available in print. Click here for more!
This is Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day. Sixty seconds on wisdom, success, and personal growth. We're focusing on 30 days of growth with gratitude and Thanksgiving. Be grateful for detours on your daily adventure. You never know what kind of blessing is just around the corner. Not too long ago, I had a meeting in Los Angeles. “What can we learn from this?” asked the young Starbucks Barista. When I got to the counter to get a cup of coffee, my frustration must've been written all over my body language. I shared my tale of a dead cell phone, that my car charger had failed and I had no clue where my destination was. I was completely relying on the kindness of strangers for help. A cellular store was charging my phone and the Starbucks Crew gave me a safe place to land. What did I learn? Number one – Always print your directions if you're prone to getting lost like I am. Number two – Be thankful for detours that provide for adventure. I made it to my destination, a little late – but with a great story to tell that created dialogue for bonding and relationship building. This is Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day. Sixty seconds on wisdom, success, and personal growth. We're focusing on 30 days of growth with gratitude and Thanksgiving. Is happiness something you can chase, or is it foolish to even try? I found some interesting snippets of information in Psychology Today. This little nugget came from a 2013 issue. “Everything in moderation,” cautions a psychologist at the University of California, Riverside. It's fine to want to be happier – as long as it doesn't slide into an obsession. Don't keep thinking: is this working? Am I happy? Put your effort into being a kinder person, improving your relationships, and savoring daily pleasures.” It's hard to think happy thoughts every moment of the day, so try just being a kinder person. For example: today I held the door open for somebody walking into the gym. It made me feel better, and it was an act of kindness that wasn't asked for. And it made be happy. Will you try it? But don't mistake gratitude for an IOU. Don't feel obligated to repay the favor. It's not about keeping score; that will just foster negative feelings between you and the other person. Be kind, because it makes you happy.
When you achieve success at something, whether it's work or at home or at school, make sure that you thank the people that helped you get there. Whenever I see somebody giving a speech for an award that they won, it's so rewarding to see them speak kind words about those who helped them get to that point in their career or level of achievement. We often forget those that we've left behind when we achieve success. Try thanking somebody today for helping you get to where you are. But, while you're at it, make sure to give yourself some credit where credit is due, don't sell yourself short. The desire to show humility, can often be misinterpreted as low self-esteem. Tryon Edwards said, “True humility is not an abject, groveling, self- despising spirit; it is the right estimate of ourselves as God sees us.” So be grateful for your achievements, and thank those who helped you along the way. Might be a good day to make the call to someone today. This has been Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day… Now go out and be fruitful. Kelly Orchard's Apple A Day is also available in print. This is Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day. Sixty seconds on wisdom, success, and personal growth. We're focusing on 30 days of growth with gratitude and Thanksgiving. Is it possible to overdo thankfulness? When I am working with a client that struggles with sadness, depression, anxiety, or other life issues, I encourage them to start a gratitude journal. I encourage them to start out slowly, start small, look for the little things to be thankful for. It could be low price of gas, or catching all the green lights on the way the office, or simply having a nice cup of coffee in the morning. Is it possible to overdo it? According to some advice I found in Psychology Today, there was a study that was done and it was discovered that people who track to their gratitude once per week experienced increased happiness; but those who track the gratitude three times per week did not. It went on to say that the possibility of running out of things to write, counterproductively, make you feel like you don't have much to be grateful for. Everything in moderation! Look for the small things to be thankful for, and be realistic. Seek growth and your purpose will find you. Seek gratitude and you'll find happiness. Do you wonder what your purpose is? I often work with clients who are seeking their life purpose. That totally makes sense. No matter what your age, we're always seeking something new. My philosophy is this; if you're constantly, perpetually promoting your personal growth, you're going to know your purpose. Because your purpose is to continue to grow. Your purpose may change from day to day, month to month, or year to year. When you're younger, your purpose might be “I'm supposed to be a mother” or “I'm supposed to be in this career” or “I'm supposed to do this”. And then you go through a growth spurt and your purpose changes. Your purpose is not really as big a mystery as you think. If you're seeking growth, your purpose will find you. So be thankful for opportunities to learn and grow. This has been Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day… Now, go out and be fruitful. Kelly Orchard's Apple A Day is also available in print. This is Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day. Sixty seconds on wisdom, success, and personal growth. We're focusing on 30 days of growth with gratitude and Thanksgiving. When my career first started I was a teenager. I navigated my way, and learned about networking and the importance of meeting other people in my early 20s and had the experience of being what might be called a ‘big fish in a little pond'; well, what would be considered a little pond back in those days. Fast forward almost 20 years later and I restarting over in a new community where nobody knew me, and I'm repeating the things that I had learned. Meanwhile, I'm also restarting in the national and international forum and arena with social media and getting my name and my experiences out there. It's a constant change and a constant evolution, which means it is constant and perpetual growth. So even when you have set backs, mine were an instance of a health crisis that completely derailed my life. When something that happens in your life; don't give up. Don't let it prevent you from moving forward, even if it means starting over somewhere else. You can use the tools, what worked for you before, to continue to build upon and the things that you didn't like about what you were doing before, you can eliminate them. That is the beauty about this new craze of transformation or reinventing. It's all about growth. This has been Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day… Now go out and be fruitful. This is Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day. Sixty seconds on wisdom, success, and personal growth. We're focusing on 30 days of growth with gratitude and Thanksgiving. “The way you start your day can affect your whole day…begin it with a smile, calmness of mind, coolness of emotions and a heart filled with gratitude.” Think about this as you go about your day, how am I fortunate? Begin by counting your blessings. What are the things you are thankful for? Make a note of it. I start my day off writing in my journal, in my cozy chair, with a hot cup of coffee, with hazelnut creamer, and begin to write some words of gratitude. I love the slow starts of my day. I make a list of things I was grateful for the day before, and I make a mental note to look for things to be grateful for all day long. This has worked for me for years. I encourage all my clients to keep a gratitude journal. Now you may not have time to sit with a cup of coffee and have a slow morning like I do, you may appreciate being able to jot down a note on a Post-it, or in your notepad on your smart phone, or even record yourself a message. Ask yourself the question today, how am I fortunate? I'll bet you have a long list. This has been Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day… Now go out and be fruitful. This is Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day. Sixty seconds on wisdom, success, and personal growth. We're focusing on 30 days of growth with gratitude and Thanksgiving. What abilities am I grateful for? Are you honest about the talents that you have? We were all given talents in our lives. Some are good at sales, math, engineering, cooking, physical fitness, sports, shopping, writing, dancing, painting, parenting. Maybe you are good at all of that. The question is, are you grateful for these abilities? Sometimes we take our talents and skills for granted. And when one doesn't possess a specific talent, we tend to beat ourselves up over it. Know this, “Life is a circle of happiness, sadness, hard times and good times. If you are going through hard times, have faith that the good times are on the way.” Stay focused on your strengths, appreciate the strengths of others, and don't compare yourselves. We all have different purpose to fulfill, although growth, is how we'll get there. Focus on your own personal and professional growth. And be grateful for the abilities you have already accumulated. Let's just grow some more.
Let's talk about the relationships that we can be thankful for. What kind of relationships do you have? Romantic, family, friendship, acquaintances, boss, client, business partner? We are the sum of the five people we spend the most time with. Whether they have a negative impact on your life, or a positive one, they matter. “Give thanks to those who did you wrong. They unknowingly made you strong.” Make a promise to spend more time with the relationships that cause you to feel thankful. Set healthy boundaries. And remember, “You will never become who you want to be if you keep blaming everyone else for who you are now.” Some of the relationships that I'm thankful for our my family, my love, my parents, my granddaughters, my old friends, my new friends, clients, new acquaintances. And of course I'm thankful for you. See how easy that is? So I'll ask you again, what relationships are you thankful for? Make a list, I'll bet it's a long one. This is Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day. Sixty seconds on wisdom, success, and personal growth. We're focusing on 30 days of growth with gratitude and Thanksgiving. What am I taking for granted, that if I stop to think about it, I am grateful for? I love to go out on a morning walk. I learned to be very mindful of the smells around me; of the sites; of the sound of my feet as it walks across the sidewalk; of the dogs barking; the school bus stopping to pick up the children; the roses just blooming on the rosebush; the fresh cut grass on the golf course. It would be very easy to take these things for granted. I'll admit, I used to. But I have learned, that daily gratitude for even the smallest things, it adds up to a lot of things to be grateful for. What do you take for granted? Why don't you think about it, and make a list. It could be something as simple as taking for granted that you have running vehicle, a roof over your head, food in your refrigerator, clothes to wear, good health. We take these things for granted on a daily basis. Today, stopped to think about it, be grateful for the things you usually take for granted. This is Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day. Sixty seconds on wisdom, success, and personal growth. We're focusing on 30 days of growth with gratitude and Thanksgiving. What insights have I gained that I am grateful for? Life experience, when we decide to learn from it, can provide us with great insight for future events. I have learned, that past experiences have prepared me to be a therapist and a coach. I have gained great insight into the business world, how people behave, and why they do what they do. You don't have to be experienced to gain insight, however. You can gain insight in a variety of ways. Read it inspiring books, pay attention to those around you, learn from others, listen and observe. All of these are great ways to gain insight. What kind of insights have you come across lately that you can be grateful for? I try to learn something new about myself and others every day. I'm a work in progress. I grow from experience. And for that I am truly thankful.
Whenever I do a workshop or coaching course on the benefits of gratitude, I teach about how the brain reacts, and the chemistry changes. The dopamine and serotonin levels change in our brain chemistry when we think positive thoughts. Just like our bodies respond to healthy nutrients, so does our brain to healthy thoughts. When you are depressed, feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and uptight; stopping to smell the roses has multiple benefits. First of all, you activate your olfactory senses, which activates positive centers in your brain, and besides, the roses look pretty. While you're smelling those roses, you're doing something positive for yourself. That includes, slowing down, being aware that there is more than what is going on inside, you are appreciating nature, growth, life. And your brain chemistry begins to fire up in a positive way. The act of gratitude, being thankful for the simplest things – like a rose will have a positive impact on your day, your week, your month, your life. Take a chance. Today, make the effort to stop and smell the roses.
I am very grateful for clients! Lately, I've had women in pretty high powered positions reach out to me for advice, counsel or just coaching support or mental health support in their struggles in their career path or just something that is going on at work. It's really important to know that it happens to all of us. I may not always have every answer, and occasionally I still experience stress and get help from my friends too. Don't be afraid to reach out, ask some questions, and be thankful for your friends. Often times, we get caught up in feeling as though we have to put on this persona, or put on this mask that we're not experiencing stress. But when personal problems or financial issues, issues with our children, and demands from our boss or from our staff get to us and start piling up on us like pancakes – sooner or later, you're going to break. Talk to somebody. Reach out. Even if it's me. Send me an email. I'd love to hear from you. Because I'm always thankful for you. This has been Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day… Now go out and be fruitful. This is Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day. Sixty seconds on wisdom, success, and personal growth. We're focusing on 30 days of growth with gratitude and Thanksgiving. True gratitude cannot be faked. When you choose to be mindfully grateful, even for the smallest things, it modifies your attitudes and behaviors. Imagine your response to a grateful customer, client, employer, friend, or loved one. When they show they are grateful for you, doesn't it completely change your attitude, for the entire day? It give you a sense of well-being. Practice being grateful, as it is a positive emotion and filled with goodwill. And remember this, “The more anger you carry in your heart towards the past, the less capable you are of loving in the present.” Gratitude begets gratitude. It will build exponentially on your day. Try something simple today, be grateful for the worker at the drive-through coffee place, be grateful for that penny you find on the ground, show gratitude for a coworker. See what happens. Gratitude grows, gratitude builds others up, gratitude just feels good. As a consultant, coach, mentor, mental health professional – I'm often in the “let's look at what you want to do and what your dreams are” mode of counseling. I really love that aspect of my job – being an expert at something and being able to really help people gain insight and focus on their true, authentic self. I've done it myself. But, no matter how well you are navigating a new path, a new approach to life, a new idea, career, relationship, and so on… eventually we find ourselves stuck in the mud of a problem or obstacle that we hadn't counted on. I encountered many professionals who became a mentor of some kind or another to me. Over the course of the years, I've had so many individuals who have given me sound counsel and advice that I cannot even name them all anymore. And, in the same manner, I too, have been that mentor to someone else, even when I didn't realize that that person considered me to be a mentor. Be thankful for mentors in your life. Be grateful for lessons that you've learned, and give back by being a mentor to someone else. This has been Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day… Now go out and be fruitful. This is Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day. Sixty seconds on wisdom, success, and personal growth. We're focusing on 30 days of growth with gratitude and Thanksgiving. What are the benefits of gratitude? I went to my number one resources, Psychology Today. This is what I found, “Gratitude is an emotion expressing appreciation for what one has—as opposed to a consumer-oriented emphasis on what one wants or needs. Gratitude is getting a great deal of attention as a facet of positive psychology: Studies show that we can deliberately cultivate gratitude, and can increase our well-being and happiness by doing so. In addition, grateful thinking—and especially expression of it to others—is associated with increased levels of energy, optimism, and empathy.” “You must learn a new way to think before you can master a new way to be.” ~Marianne Williamson Wise words. Even wiser thoughts. Practicing gratitude will increase your well- being, happiness and personal and professional growth. Today I want you to say this, “Starting today, I will forget what is gone, and appreciate what still remains, and look forward to what is coming next.” This has been Kelly Orchard's Apple a Day… Now go out and be fruitful. Show NotesWho Said It..."New Year's Day: Now is the accepted time to make your annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual." -Mark Twain“Adversity is a crossroads that makes a person choose one of two paths: character or compromise.” -John C. Maxwell“Tiger, one day you will come to a fork in the road and you're going to have to make a decision about which direction you want to go. He raised his hand and pointed. 'If you go that way you can be somebody. You will have to make compromises and you will have to turn your back on your friends. But you will be a member of the club and you will get promoted and you will get good assignments.' Then Boyd raised his other hand and pointed in another direction. 'Or you can go that way and you can do something- something for your country and for your Air Force and for yourself. If you decide you want to do something, you may not get promoted and you may not get the good assignments and you certainly will not be a favorite of your superiors. But you won't have to compromise yourself. You will be true to your friends and to yourself. And your work might make a difference. To be somebody or to do something. In life there is often a roll call. That's when you will have to make a decision. To be or to do? Which way will you go?'" -John BoydReferences...Unofficial episode sponsor: ThermosCity of Red BluffDaniel Boone-American PioneerDavid CrockettDavid Bowie's "Ground Control to Major Tom"Bowie Knife-named after Jim Bowie (not Sam or David Bowie)DrossGeorge Bailey shaking Harry Potter's hand sceneJim Croce's "Cat in the Cradle"BYU-IdahoHarold B.
