Original Release Date: Monday 28 April 2025 Description: Our last show before our 18th Anniversary is also our last show to be recorded via Skype! It's also an action-packed 72 minutes that boasts the return of “Lawsuit of the Week”, where Dean and Phil get down and dirty discussing the Paramount merger with Skydance, the fate of CBS' long-running “60 Minutes”, DEI initiatives, the FCC and Trump advisor Stephen Miller. Several films get discussed in depth, including Easter Parade, Diary of a Mad Housewife and Meshes of the Afternoon – each of which leads to discussions about husband-wife creative teams. In “Live Event(s) of the Week”, the delightful TCM host Ben Mankiewicz and the super-talented “Medicine Woman” Veronica Osorio both get celebrated. “Celebrity Deaths” this week is a lightning round quiz edition featuring remembrances of a game show host, a child star, a TV cowboy, a Canadian movie director, an Emmy Award-winning dramatic actress who starred in and co-created one of the most legendary dramas of all time, a Tony-winning composer and lyricist, a rock drummer, and a neo-expressionist painter. Finally, Dean discusses the Seth Rogen-starring Apple TV+ series “The Studio”.
Our final Diana Wynyard episode has arrived all too soon! We look at her two final key roles, in Alexander Korda's film of Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband (1947) and The Feminine Touch (1956), a nurse drama that's better than its silly title. And in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, we cover the 2025 Toronto Silent Film Festival, focusing on three films built around miraculous performances, Victor Sjostrom's The Wind (1928), starring Lillian Gish, Victor Fleming's Mantrap (1926), starring Clara Bow, and Josef von Sternberg's The Last Command (1928), starring Emil Jannings (ably supported by Evelyn Brent), before turning our attention to a film that was entirely new to us, the blatantly anti-capitalist The Johnstown Flood (1926), featuring Janet Gaynor in her first major role. Our MGM 1948 Studios Year by Year episode is a Freed Unit double feature: the great Irving Berlin musical Easter Parade, starring Judy Garland and Fred Astaire, and Summer Holiday, a Mickey Rooney coming-of-age story based on a play by Eugene O'Neill, directed by studio-era "art director" Rouben Mamoulian. We discuss Easter Parade as a vehicle for presenting Judy Garland's "problematic" anti-star star persona and Summer Holiday's envelope-pushing leftist politics and middle-class sexual repression plot, wrapped up in cozy turn-of-the-century nostalgia. In this week's edition of Vintage Classic Radio's "Saturday Matinee," we begin with "The Aldrich Family" in the episode titled "Legal Trouble," which first aired on March 11, 1943. This episode finds young Henry Aldrich embroiled in a comedic series of misunderstandings that lead to a humorous encounter with the legal system. The charm of the episode lies in Henry's naive attempts to navigate through his troubles, often making situations hilariously worse. The cast features Ezra Stone as the lovable Henry Aldrich, with House Jameson and Katharine Raht playing his ever-patient parents, Sam and Alice Aldrich. The episode is peppered with the talents of Jackie Kelk as Henry's best friend, Homer Brown, and Leona Powers as his teacher, Miss Eggleston, adding to the fun. Following "The Aldrich Family," we dive into the "Screen Director's Playhouse" for "Appointment for Love," originally broadcasted on August 26, 1949. This episode brings to life a romantic comedy where a successful playwright, portrayed by Charles Boyer, marries a no-nonsense doctor played by Margaret Sullavan. Their unconventional marriage, devoid of the usual romantic trappings, leads to amusing and touching attempts to navigate their love for each other. Directed with flair, this episode showcases the director's unique voice, making it a highlight of the evening. Lastly, we'll enjoy "The Jack Benny Program" in the "Easter Parade" episode, which aired on April 10, 1955. As we gear up for Easter next weekend, this episode captures the Easter festivities with Jack Benny's signature comedic style, as he and the cast prepare for the annual Easter parade. The humor escalates with Jack's vain attempts to outshine his cast in terms of fashion, resulting in a series of comic mishaps. Jack Benny leads the charge with his unparalleled wit, supported by Mary Livingstone, Eddie Anderson as Rochester, Dennis Day, and Don Wilson, creating an unforgettable Easter-themed spectacle. This Saturday's "Saturday Matinee" promises a delightful journey through comedy, romance, and seasonal celebration, featuring episodes from "The Aldrich Family," "Screen Director's Playhouse," and "The Jack Benny Program." Each show brings its unique flavor to the fore, from the innocent mishaps of Henry Aldrich to the romantic entanglements in "Appointment for Love," and concluding with the festive hilarity of "Easter Parade" on "The Jack Benny Program" as we eagerly anticipate the coming Easter weekend. Together, they offer a rich tapestry of entertainment that encapsulates the golden era of radio.

This Easter this week we decided the time was right to discuss one of Gelsey's all time favorite films, 1948's Easter Parade starring Fred Astaire, Judy Garland and Ann Miller. It was also Producer Matt's first time watching! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Izzy of Be Kind Rewind is with us to celebrate Ann Miller's centennial and the arrival of Easter. We may be talking about Easter Parade (1948) but there's also time for us to discuss Ann Miller's career, Judy and Fred's lack of chemistry, and why there should be a Peter Lawford biopic. Kristen's written a book for TCM and Running Press called But Have You Read the Book? all about film adaptations! You can buy it wherever you buy books and if you're in Los Angeles on March 29th at 7pm consider heading over to Larry Edmunds bookstore where Kristen will be doing an in-person signing. Excerpt of the 29 Mar 1950 Burns and Allen program with guest star Al Jolson. There is no reason to delve into the plot of this program, as the madcap comedy of Burns and Allen would not resurface until "Laugh In" decades later, but suffice it to say that this edited clip of the show includes George and Gracie, along with Al Jolson and "Easter Parade." And it is only a taste of the complete delicacy offered this week. The complete broadcast recording, along with other Jolson radio shows, is available at the Official Al Jolson Website at www.jolson.org.
