Listen: Listen here or subscribe on any podcast app Episode #67 - Champions League Group Stage PreviewGroup A has the returning champion Bayern Munich, and they are running on all cylinders.Atletico Madrid has Diego Costa and Luis Suarez. Will they be a Happy meal combo or a bloated sandwich? Salzberg, aka FC Red Bull is in the group, but they lost Erling Haaland to Dortmund. How much energy do they have? And will Lokomotiv Moskva be able to derail any of the competitors.Group B has an old club with old names with dominant experience in the past decade. Can Real Madrid continue in this decade without a striking star? Shakhtar Donetsk and Monchengladbach like to press with high energy. Can either squad squeeze out a surprising result? Inter Milan has an all star squad of big club rejects, perhaps they have the attitude to make big waves.Group C has perennial EPL title contender Manchester City with their much heralded coach Pep Guardiola. This group should be a three way battle for the runner's up position between the Mexican star Tecatito led Porto, the feisty Greek champs Olympiacos, and the defensive minded Marseille.Group D has the EPL champions Liverpool FC, Memo's rooting interest. Ajax has recent history, but they are missing key components that wrote that history. Atalanta were a big surprise last year, and they are still rolling, perhaps now even stronger with experience. Have you heard of Midtyliand? They are the Danish Champs, and most likely the fourth place finisher in this group.Group E features two separate battles, one between EPL Chelsea and La Liga Sevilla for the top of the group. And one between Krasnodar and Rennes for a Europa League spot. Can debutante manager Lampard beat an in-form Sevilla side. Can a team nobody has ever heard upend Ligue 1 top of the table Rennes?Group F is the weakest group in the draw with two time in a row Russian Champs Zenit, chippy Serie A club Lazio, the stout defense of the Belgian champs Club Brugge, and the energetic and youthful stars of Borussia Dortmund.Group G has a bipolar configuration with two huge clubs finding their way with new managers and two little league champs with hopes and dreams. Ronaldo and Juventus with Messi and Barcelona top the group. Dynamo Kyiv, the Ukrainian champ and Ferencvaros, the Hungarian champ make up the undercard.Group H is the strongest in the draw with Turkish champions Istanbul Basaksehir looking to earn the participation trophy. Two semifinalists from the last Champions League season are served as the entrée in this group with the once mighty Manchester United offered as the appetizer. It's a three way steel cage match between Man U, Rasenball Sport Leipzig, and Paris St Germain.Thank you for finding us and listening.
