fWotD Episode 3324: UEFA Euro 2016 final Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 11 June 2026, is UEFA Euro 2016 final. The UEFA Euro 2016 final was the final match of UEFA Euro 2016, the fifteenth edition of the European Championship, UEFA's quadrennial competition for national football teams. The match was played at the Stade de France in Paris, France, on 10 July 2016, and was contested between Portugal and hosts France. The 24-team tournament began with a group stage, from which 16 teams qualified for the knockout stage. En route to the final, Portugal finished third in Group F, with draws against Iceland, Austria and Hungary. Portugal then defeated Croatia in the last 16, Poland in the quarter-finals after a penalty shoot-out, and progressed to the final after beating Wales 2–0 in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, France finished as winners of Group A, beating Romania and Albania before drawing with Switzerland. In the knockout stage, France defeated the Republic of Ireland in the last 16, Iceland in the quarter-finals, and progressed to the final after beating Germany 2–0 in the semi-finals.The final took place in front of 75,868 spectators, and was refereed by English official Mark Clattenburg. Following a goalless 90 minutes which saw Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo depart the match through injury, Portugal then took the lead in the 108th minute through substitute Eder, after his low shot from 25 yards (23 m) beat France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. This would prove to be the contest's only goal, as Portugal won 1–0 to claim their first major tournament title. In winning the final, Portugal became the tenth different nation to win the European Championship, twelve years after losing their first final, at home in the 2004 tournament. France became the second host team to lose the final, after Portugal, and suffered their first defeat at a major tournament hosted in the country since the 1960 European Nations' Cup third-place play-off against Czechoslovakia. This was the fifth European Championship final to end in a draw after 90 minutes of play, and the second whose winners were decided by extra time, after the inaugural final in 1960. As the winners, Portugal gained entry into their first FIFA Confederations Cup, which was played in Russia in 2017.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:52 UTC on Thursday, 11 June 2026.For the full current version of the article, see UEFA Euro 2016 final on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Arthur.

Patrick and Neel break down Groups E and F ahead of the World Cup. They dig into Germany's tactical setup under Nagelsmann, covering the attack rotation with Undav, Havertz, Wirtz and Musiala, the defensive concerns at full-back, and whether the midfield can handle more athletic teams in transition. Ecuador's ironclad defensive record gets examined alongside their near-total lack of attacking threat, and why the Ecuador vs Ivory Coast opener could be the defining game of the group. They cover Curaçao's squad, what Ivory Coast's exciting forward line needs to do to progress, and rank the group. In Group F they look at the Netherlands' injury-hit squad missing Xavi Simons and the creativity question that brings, Japan's huge loss of Mitoma and the pressure that puts on Kubo, Sweden's dependence on Isak and Gyokeres, and Tunisia's likely strategy of grinding out three draws. Plus an introduction to the Transfer Flow World Cup bracket builder with live odds and a leaderboard, and Patrick's charity walk in the Indian Himalayas. Up first, it's more questions for Belgium and Domenico Tedesco after an uninspiring draw with Ukraine, and then celebrations for both Slovakia and Romania as they played out... and occasionally waited out... a result. And then it's on to Group F, where Georgia (our consensus worst team of the tournament) booked passage to the knockout round with a historic win over Portugal, and Turkey slugged their way past Czechia. Plus, there's a quick lookahead to the knockout round, and then a chat about Argentina-Chile and Peru-Canada in the Copa America! Sponsors! Today's episode is brought to you by… Ibotta! Jimbo's got Sasha Goryunov, Liam Tharme and Seb Stafford-Bloor alongside him to capture all the fallout from Day 9 at the Euros. Belgium finally turned up in their 2-0 win over Romania to mean Group E is fascinatingly poised - with all four teams sat on three points going into the final round of matches. Michael Cox drops in from Cologne to talk us through the game. Portugal booked their place in the round of 16 as Group F winners after their comfortable 3-0 win over Turkey, while substitute Saba Lobjanidze wasted a golden chance for Georgia with *literally* the final kick of the game as the debutants claimed a first ever point in a major tournament with a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic - which does neither many favours. Plus, an opportunity to look ahead to Sunday's action - which sees Switzerland face hosts Germany and Scotland take on Hungary. AFP's Kieran Canning joins us to preview the Tartan Army's crunch tie which could see them reach the knockout phase of a major tournament for the first time ever... Produced by Lucy Oliva. Hello Rank Squad! It's time to get stuck into this summer's international football, so here's the last in our series of Euro 2024 Preview Shows! We begin today with Group E, which includes Belgium's first tournament under a new head coach, Ukraine's Girona-powered attack, Slovakia's impressive left-hand side, and Romania's youth-injected underdogs. Then it's onwards in Part Two to discuss the last four teams - Group F, which comprises a very strong Portugal side, a very fun Turkey side, a very confused Czechia side, and a quietly hopeful Georgia team making their major international tournament debut. We talk each team's chances of progression and outright victory, as well as the players upon which their dreams will rise and fall, and the managers trying to guide their nations to glory. If you haven't already, why not go and have a listen to our other two preview shows - discussing the other four groups and some of the major players in this tournament? And for the link to our Euros Fantasy Football League - click here or use the code LmqWjA on the Official UEFA Euro 2024 Fantasy Game! It's Ranks!
