Jason Longshore breaks down a wild Sunday at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Spain answered every critic with a 4-0 rout of Saudi Arabia in Atlanta, and Mikel Oyarzabal became just the second player on record since 1966 to register three goal involvements in the opening 25 minutes of a World Cup match. In Miami, Cabo Verde refused to fold against Uruguay, drawing 2-2 to stay unbeaten and put a Senegal 2002 history book entry on notice. Plus Japan eliminating Tunisia in the 1,000th match in World Cup history, Belgium's stunning scoring drought, and Iran sitting top of Group G. Looking ahead to Monday's slate with Messi and Argentina, Mbappé's 100th cap and his MLS comments, Norway versus Senegal, and a Jordan-Algeria elimination feel. Plus the trends shaping this tournament, from the USMNT's pressing identity to the substitute goal explosion. Closing with the 3-4-3.

Egypt made history in Vancouver, beating New Zealand 3-1 to record their first World Cup win, 92 years after becoming the first African and Arab nation to appear at the tournament. A half-time tactical shift transformed the match after Egypt fell behind, with Mohamed Salah scoring his first World Cup goal before Trezeguet headed in a third from Salah's corner. Egypt now top Group G on four points, with an opportunity to win the group in their final match against Iran. Iran kept pace with a disciplined 0-0 draw against Belgium, with Alireza Beiranvand making a crucial save and Mehdi Taremi denied a goal by VAR. Belgium finished with ten men after a late red card. The Group G finale between Egypt and Iran is now one of the most compelling matches of the round. Morocco scored the fastest goal of the tournament so far, with Ismael Saibari scoring after 71 seconds against Scotland on Sunday to claim a 1-0 win. Morocco are level with Brazil at the top of Group C on four points. Spain recovered from their opening draw to beat Saudi Arabia 4-0, with 18-year-old Lamine Yamal scoring on his first World Cup start to become only the second player of that age to open the scoring in a World Cup match after Pele in 1958. Saudi Arabia have one point from two games and must beat Cape Verde to stay alive. Tunisia were eliminated after a 4-0 defeat to Japan, their second heavy loss in two matches under two different coaches. Tonight, France face Iraq at 1am UAE time, with Didier Deschamps warning his squad not to underestimate them. Argentina face Austria at 9pm, and Jordan take on Algeria at 7am in a match both sides need. Mina Rzouki presents Trending Middle East's World Cup round-up, a daily bonus series from The National for the duration of the tournament.
On June 21, 2026, at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Iran managed to secure a scoreless 0-0 draw against Belgium, significantly undermining the Red Devils' ambitions in Group G while enhancing Team Melli's chances of achieving a historic advancement to the knockout stage. In spite of significant political tensions, stringent US visa travel restrictions, and a severely limited preparation period that allowed Iran less than 16 hours of training, Amir Ghalenoei's team demonstrated exceptional defensive resilience.Belgium controlled 68% of the possession and attempted 23 shots, yet they displayed a lack of precision and sharpness in the attacking zone.Iran had a potential first-half goal from captain Mehdi Taremi disallowed for offside. Later in the second half, Belgium's manager Rudi Garcia faced further difficulties when young defender Nathan Ngoy mishandled a backpass, resulting in a foul on Taremi and a straight red card in the 66th minute. Both teams are currently tied with two points after two matches, following Iran's 2-2 draw against New Zealand and Belgium's 1-1 stalemate with Egypt. Belgium must secure a victory against New Zealand in Vancouver on Friday, while Iran holds the key to its own fate against Egypt in Seattle.

Belgium and Egypt ended their World Cup opener in a 1-1 draw on Monday, as a second-half equalizer from Belgium disrupted Mohamed Salah's celebration of his 34th birthday. Emam Ashour scored first in the opening half in Seattle, but Romelu Lukaku, who came off the bench after the hour mark, forced an own goal from Egypt's Mohamed Hany. With this draw, Egypt, the seven-time Africa Cup of Nations champions, continues their quest for a first World Cup victory. This marks their fourth appearance in the global tournament, and with upcoming Group G matches against Iran and New Zealand, they will aim to overcome this challenge in North America. For Belgium, this tournament represents a likely final opportunity for the remnants of their golden generation to surpass their third-place finish in Russia eight years ago and finally secure a trophy.Key veterans Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, and Lukaku remain central figures in Rudi Garcia's squad. This was only the second occasion in their history that Egypt took the lead in a World Cup match, the first being when Salah scored in a 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia in 2018.Despite the expectations of a straightforward victory for Belgium, they were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by a determined and spirited Egyptian side. What many anticipated would be an easy win for the Red Devils evolved into a tactical contest that left Belgian supporters frustrated and Egyptian fans filled with hope.Egypt stunned Belgium by taking an early lead in the first half, catching the Belgian defense off guard and igniting jubilation among their supporters. Although Belgium managed to equalize in the second half, they were unable to breach the Egyptian defense to claim all three points.

If you're looking for the best World Cup betting picks, group winner predictions, and tournament futures analysis, Andrew Passaro and Nick Dianni continue their 2026 World Cup preview series by breaking down Groups E, F, G, and H. Rather than covering every market, we identify our favorite betting angle from each group and discuss where we see value before the tournament kicks off. In Group E, featuring Ecuador, Germany, Ivory Coast, and Curaçao, we analyze whether Germany can live up to expectations as the group favorite and which nation has the best chance to challenge for a knockout-round spot. In Group F, we break down a fascinating group containing the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, and Tunisia. Can the Dutch cruise through the group, or will one of the tournament's most competitive groups produce a surprise contender? We also dive into Group G, where Belgium, Egypt, Iran, and New Zealand battle for advancement. We discuss whether Belgium still possesses the quality to dominate the group and identify potential value opportunities among the challengers. Finally, we preview Group H, featuring Spain, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay. With a European powerhouse, a South American contender, and two dangerous underdogs, this group could provide some of the most intriguing betting markets of the entire tournament. As always, we focus on team strengths, weaknesses, futures markets, qualification odds, and potential dark horses to help you find the smartest bets before the World Cup begins. If you enjoy World Cup betting content, soccer futures analysis, and international football predictions, make sure to like, subscribe, and turn on notifications as we continue our countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. ⚽
