At the time the mandate was imposed, in early 2021, “there were variants that had just been detected that showed signs of increased transmissibility, and people were starting to travel again,” Springer said. “In those circumstances, the CDC had good cause to issue this order, particularly when the CDC detailed the reasons why in this particular environment, namely in the transportation sector and in transportation settings, COVID had a specific tendency to spread among people who are traveling together because they’re standing together in lines and sitting together on conveyances.” One of the judges expressed skepticism with the line of thinking, accusing the CDC of issuing “boilerplate” language to impose the mandate without a notice and comment period. Karina Sergi is a licensed therapist, trained the old-fashioned way, but she is exploring a new tool that has been proven to help people who are struggling with persistent depression, addiction, and post-traumatic stress disorder: magic mushrooms. PNI is studying psilocybin, the active ingredient in mushrooms, as a treatment for alcohol use disorder, and Karina is a facilitator for the trial. She meets with patients before their psilocybin journeys, sits with them during the experience, then meets with them afterward to integrate the event into their daily lives. PNI founder Dr. Dan Kelly has said that psilocybin might be the most important compound for brain health that's currently under study, and Karina agrees. She points out that magic mushrooms have been used by indigenous populations in Mexico for centuries, and she feels fortunate that the modern world has rediscovered them. The Portland Trail Blazers front office continues to take shape under Joe Cronin as the team is set to hire Sergi Oliva. This is the third assistant GM Cronin has hired as he fills out his staff with a variety of skill sets. Oliva most recently worked as an assistant coach under Quin Snyder in Utah after six seasons in Philadelphia where he was promoted up the ranks and eventually held the title of Vice President and Director of Analytics and Strategy. Oliva brings a data driven, analytics mind to a front office that recently added Mike Schmitz a ESPN draft analyst praised for his scouting/amateur basketball acumen. In January, the Blazers added assistant GM Andrae Patterson, who took on a player personnel and internal communications role. Cronin is adding balance to his front office with three assistant GMs with specific and diverse background and areas of expertise.
