    310. Shaq Moore: World Cup Money, MLS Salaries, Playing Messi & The Business of Soccer

    Trading Secrets

This week, Jason is joined by professional soccer player, FC Dallas defender, US Men's National Team player, Gold Cup champion, World Cup participant, and founder of the Shaq Moore Foundation, Shaq Moore, for a conversation about the business of professional soccer, the financial realities of playing overseas, World Cup pressure, MLS salaries, and building a lasting career in a sport that continues to grow in the United States. Shaq reflects on realizing at a young age that soccer could become his career, and how attending the 2010 World Cup helped fully shift his focus back to the sport. With a father who also played professionally, Shaq grew up around the game, but his path was far from traditional. As a teenager, he left the United States to pursue his dream in Spain, where he spent years grinding through lower divisions, learning the language, and fighting for every opportunity. Jason and Shaq dive into the financial side of that journey, including what it was like earning roughly 800 to 900 euros per month early in his career, dealing with teams that went months without paying players, and learning how to live on a budget while chasing a professional dream. Shaq opens up about the uncertainty of playing overseas, the role agents play in protecting young athletes, and why those difficult early years shaped him both personally and professionally. Shaq also breaks down how soccer contracts work, including transfer fees, buyout clauses, bonuses, incentives, and what it means when a player is sent on loan. He explains the business behind his move back to MLS, his reported transfer to Nashville SC, and how returning to the United States helped position him for a potential World Cup opportunity. The conversation also explores Shaq's experience with the US Men's National Team, from winning the Gold Cup and scoring the fastest goal in USMNT history to getting called into a World Cup qualifying window while vacationing on an island. Shaq shares what it was like being thrown into one of the most important games of qualifying, eventually making the 2022 World Cup roster, and playing against England and Iran on the world stage. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, Jason and Shaq discuss the state of the US team, the pressure of playing on home soil, World Cup ticket prices, player bonuses, endorsements, and how making a World Cup roster can change an athlete's brand and financial future. Shaq also gives his thoughts on the US group, possible contenders, and what it is really like playing against Lionel Messi. Beyond the field, Shaq opens up about financial planning as a professional athlete, budgeting for a career with an uncertain shelf life, working with a financial advisor, investing for the future, and learning from the stories of athletes who made millions but struggled after their playing careers ended. Shaq also shares the work he is doing through the Shaq Moore Foundation, including youth soccer clinics, food drives, community initiatives, and opportunities for kids in Fort Lauderdale and Trinidad and Tobago. He reflects on fatherhood, life in Dallas, future coaching goals, and the importance of staying grounded through every stage of the journey. From grinding in Spain for less than $1,000 a month to representing the United States on the World Cup stage, Shaq reveals what it really takes to stay the course, survive setbacks, and build a career in professional soccer. Shaq reveals all this and so much more in another episode you can't afford to miss! Subscribe to the Trading Secrets podcast! Every World Cup has its stand‑out personalities and talking points. This year, fans have been as delighted by Lionel Messi's performance in the tournament, his sixth World Cup, and by the stand‑out style of DR Congo superfan Lumumba Vea, as they have been sometimes baffled by hydration breaks. But only a handful of moments are remembered throughout the decades. In 1986 in Mexico City, Diego Maradona scored two goals for Argentina in a match against England that will never be forgotten. World Service News editor Lourdes Heredia, it turns out, was there and witnessed what Maradona would go on to call his 'Hand of God' goal. A few weeks ago in Afghanistan, in the western city of Herat, people took to the streets in a rare protest after local Taliban government officials reportedly began arresting women perceived to be “improperly wearing the hijab." Since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, women's rights have been restricted more and more. Women are no longer allowed to go to secondary school or university, beauty parlours have been banned, travel restrictions have been put in place dictating how far women can travel from home, and women have been ordered not to speak when out in public. Mahjooba Nowrouzi and Mamoon Durrani of BBC Afghan have been reporting on these protests and looking into Taliban leadership. The Fifth Floor is at the heart of global storytelling on the BBC World Service, bringing you the best stories from journalists in the BBC's 43 language services. Recent episodes have investigated Russia's youth armies and how they make soldiers of Ukrainian children; featured the BBC team who were the first journalists to the site of the Nigerian school kidnappings and reflected the effects of internet blackouts in Iran, Uganda and India. This week on Sports Guyz Only, the crew goes all-in on the biggest sporting event on the planet: the FIFA World Cup. Joey jumps into the studio for a soccer-heavy episode as the guys break down the tournament's biggest storylines, the best players in the world, and why this World Cup feels different than any before it.   The conversation starts with a debate over what actually qualifies as a sport before quickly shifting into World Cup fever. The guys discuss Lionel Messi's incredible start to the tournament, Cristiano Ronaldo's pursuit of history, Erling Haaland's dominance, and why France still looks like the team to beat. They also dive into Team USA's surprising run, whether the Americans can finally make a deep World Cup push, and why international soccer creates an atmosphere unlike any other sporting event.   Along the way, they explain how international eligibility works, debate dual citizenship in world soccer, and compare the different playing styles across Europe and South America. Plus, a spirited argument over the eternal question: Messi or Ronaldo? Joey gives his perspective as a longtime soccer fan, while the rest of the crew weighs pure talent versus longevity, work ethic, and overall impact on the game.   The guys also wander into plenty of classic Sports Guyz territory with discussions about Olympic athletes getting paid, the return of the Presidential Fitness Test, whether prestigious colleges actually matter in the real world, terrible fast-food chains, Waffle House adventures, and why Bojangles somehow became the most controversial topic of the night.   To close things out, they hit the latest NBA offseason rumors, Timberwolves trade possibilities, the future of Jaden McDaniels, Jaylen Brown speculation, and the staggering amount of money today's global superstars are making. From Ronaldo's Saudi contract to Messi's MLS deal, the crew wonders just how much money is too much—and whether any athlete is really worth a billion dollars.   Thanks so much for listening to Sports Guyz Only! In this solo Eye2Eye episode, Dr. Harbir Sian reflects on the idea of detachment through a recent road trip experience that swung from an incredible high to an unexpected setback. After a spontaneous series of events led to seeing Lionel Messi score a hat trick at a World Cup match in Kansas City, the next day brought a very different turn: the truck broke down in Colby, Kansas, forcing everyone to adjust their plans. The episode explores how detachment does not mean being emotionless or disconnected. Instead, it means enjoying the highs without assuming everything will keep going perfectly, and handling the lows without letting them ruin the bigger journey. Harbir connects this lesson to the Stoic concept of amor fati, or love of fate, encouraging listeners to accept what comes, adjust, and focus on the next right step. 3 Key Takeaways1. Detachment helps us handle both highs and lows. When things go amazingly well, it is easy to assume everything will continue that way. When things go wrong, it is easy to feel like the entire plan is ruined. Detachment gives us space from both reactions. 2. Life rarely follows the exact itinerary we create. Even the most carefully planned trip, project, or life path can change unexpectedly. The goal is not to avoid disruption, but to stay calm enough to figure out the next right step. 3. Amor fati is about accepting the path, not resisting it. Harbir reminds listeners that loving your fate means being grateful for the experience in front of you, even when it does not match the version you planned. Love the show?
