This season's Champions League Round of 16 featured a record-breaking 68 goals across Europe--much to the demise of English sides. Reigning UCL holders PSG faced off against reigning Conference League and Club World Cup winners Chelsea in a rematch from last summer's Club World Cup Final in the U.S. Real Madrid faced off against Manchester City in the knockout rounds for the 5th season in a row in what has become the modern-day UCL Classico. Bodo/Glimt and Sporting, a tie overlooked going into the Round of 16, witnessed one of the greatest UCL comebacks in history, though with abysmal commentary from Martin Tyler. Arsenal vs Leverkusen transpired more or less as expected, as did Liverpool vs Galatasaray. Bayern decimated Atalanta in a strong statement across two legs, where they scored double-digit goals on aggregate. Newcastle kept it close with Barcelona for three halves before collapsing in the 2nd half of the 2nd leg on the road. And Atletico Madrid embarrassed Spurs at the very ground where they lost the 2018/19 Final to Liverpool, though they earned a consolation in the second leg. It's the end of the round for Italian sides this season, while Spanish sides cruised to the Quarterfinals at the expense of most English clubs. Why the "Premier League disaster" narrative doesn't really make sense, plus some capsule summaries of the eight matches and why there was not that much to learn from the second legs. City-Real and Chelsea-PSG matches were over too early, Liverpool and Arsenal held serve at home, Bayern continued walking, why would anyone have expected more than this from Tottenham, and Barcelona-Newcastle was a fascinating watch with more to discuss but not necessarily representative of any larger dynamics. The World Cup is around the corner, and the USMNT roster decisions are getting real. We dig into Mauricio Pochettino's latest squad selection and debate whether he got it right—or if there are some glaring issues that could haunt the U.S. on the biggest stage. One of the biggest talking points: Gio Reyna. Is he still deserving of a place in this team, or is it time to move on? We also explore Ricardo Pepi's reported move to Fulham and why this could be a make-or-break moment in his career as he fights to become the USMNT's starting striker. Over in Europe, it was a brutal Champions League Round of 16 for the Premier League. Manchester City, Tottenham, Chelsea, and Newcastle all crashing out? Yeah, we've got a lot to say. Is this proof that the Premier League might be overrated this season, or is it just one of those years where things didn't go their way? We break down what went wrong and what it says about the state of England's top clubs compared to the rest of Europe. And then… chaos. Absolute chaos. CAF somehow manages to strip Senegal of their AFCON title and hand it to Morocco nearly two months after the tournament ended. We try to make sense of one of the wildest administrative decisions in recent soccer history—and fail miserably. So instead, we do what we do best: roast the situation, question everything, and unpack just how ridiculous this whole saga really is. There is so much football to discuss that this podcast could not contain it all and part two will be a subscriber episode. Arsenal leave Germany with a draw, but the performance in Leverkusen sparks plenty of debate. In this episode of The Non-Negotiables Podcast, the team breaks down the 1–1 draw away to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League Round of 16. From the starting XI decisions and early refereeing controversies to Martinelli rattling the crossbar and a frustrating attacking display, the discussion explores where the performance fell short and why Arsenal struggled to impose themselves on the game. The panel looks closely at the tactical setup, including the continued use of the double pivot and Jurriën Timber's advanced role, while analysing difficult nights for several key players. Bukayo Saka's performance, Martinelli's finishing, and the absence of Martin Ødegaard all feature in a wider conversation about how Arsenal are currently building attacks — and why the team is finding it harder to break down organised opponents.Attention then turns to the decisive moment late in the match as Noni Madueke wins a controversial penalty. Was there enough contact? Would it have been overturned in the Premier League? Kai Havertz steps up to convert and rescue the draw, but the debate continues over whether Arsenal escaped Leverkusen with a fortunate result or earned it through persistence.Beyond the match itself, the hosts discuss the wider context of Arsenal's season — the fine margins, the physical demands of the schedule, and the mentality that has kept the team difficult to beat across competitions.Part two shifts to the regular features, including the Who Am I? game and the weekend prediction segment, with Liverpool vs Tottenham and Chelsea vs Newcastle under the spotlight. Finally, the conversation turns back to Arsenal with a preview of the upcoming Premier League clash against Everton. With the title race tightening and a demanding run of fixtures ahead — including the second leg against Leverkusen and the Carabao Cup final — the team assesses squad rotation, injury concerns, and the importance of maintaining control in the margins that define championship seasons.Chapters:(00:00) - Arteta's Non-Negotiables & Intro(00:51) - Starting XI Reaction: Havertz on the Bench & Tactical Setup(02:34) - Early Refereeing Controversy & Champions League Standards Debate(07:15) - Martinelli Hits the Bar: Arsenal's Best First-Half Chance(08:04) - Saliba & Gabriel Struggles Playing Out From the Back(09:08) - Half-Time Verdict: Good Arsenal or Bad Arsenal?(09:29) - “Atrocious Arsenal” Second-Half Start & Leverkusen Goal(11:14) - Arsenal Response Debate & Control vs Reality(13:21) - Timber's Advanced Role & Lack of Attacking Penetration(15:03) - Saka Subbed Off & Madueke Impact Discussion(17:09) - Arsenal Chase the Game & Havertz Introduction(18:54) - Late Penalty Controversy: Was It Soft?(24:32) - Arteta vs Player Responsibility Debate(26:34) - Stats & Tactical Discussion: Double Pivot vs Single Pivot(31:47) - Martinelli Debate & Left-Wing Concerns(33:08) - Havertz Equaliser & Arsenal Escape with 1–1 Draw(33:33) - Champions League Round-of-16 Reactions & English Teams Struggle(37:01) - Winter Break Debate & European Scheduling Impact(39:58) - Part 2 Intro & “Who Am I?” Game(41:20) - Prediction Game: Liverpool vs Tottenham(48:51) - Chelsea vs Newcastle Preview(51:26) - Six Pack: Everton vs Arsenal Six “Business End” Talking Points(54:09) - Arsenal vs Everton Match Preview(56:35) - Squad Rotation Discussion: Havertz, Saka, Madueke & White(59:17) - Left Wing Debate: Martinelli vs Alternatives(01:05:53) - Final Everton Match Thoughts(01:07:39) - “Who Am I?” Answer Revealed

Post‑Leverkusen (A) UCL R16 L1 / Pre‑Everton (H)Hotel Rooms, Red Bulls & a Ropey 1–1Recorded the morning after Arsenal's Champions League Round of 16 first leg in Leverkusen, Tabs and Mos deliver a very different episode — live from a Cologne hotel room, running on limited sleep, too much caffeine, and the emotional hangover of a frustrating 1–1 draw.We relive the entire away‑day experience: travel disasters, train strikes, last‑minute flights, Red Bull‑fuelled insomnia, and the surreal vibe of watching Arsenal in Germany for the first time. On the pitch, they break down a performance that felt flat, disjointed, and strangely passive. Saka struggled, Eze drifted, Martinelli couldn't get going, and even Saliba and Gabriel looked shaky. Tabs and Mos dig into why Arsenal never found rhythm, how Leverkusen controlled phases without creating much, and why Odegaard's absence left a glaring “O‑zone” hole in midfield. There were positives: Noni Madueke's impact off the bench, Havertz's ice‑cold penalty, and the fact that Arsenal leave Germany level — a result that looks a lot better when compared to the other English clubs' first‑leg disasters. The episode wraps with a look ahead to Everton at home: the lineup questions, the fitness concerns, and why Arsenal need to snap back into gear quickly with the season entering its decisive stretch.Key Talking PointsChaos in Cologne: travel nightmares, caffeine overdoses, and hotel‑room podcastingThe BayArena experience: friendly staff, easy access, and a strange “friendly‑match” vibe early onSaka's off‑day, Eze's nonchalance, Martinelli's struggles, and an off defensive displayNoni Madueke's directness vs Saka's stop‑start styleHavertz's penalty narrative and composureLeverkusen's control vs Arsenal's lack of intensityThe away‑end infighting and negativityChampions League context: a draw that might age wellEverton preview: selection dilemmas, fatigue, and the need to resetFollow, rate, and subscribe on your favourite podcast app.Find us on socials: @thegroveafcThis is The Grove, and everyone is welcome. Liverpool suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray at a raucous RAMS Park, a result that felt like "bad déjà vu" after losing by the same scoreline in Turkey during the league phase earlier this season. A 7th-minute header from Mario Lemina proved to be the difference, as the Reds once again struggled to handle set-pieces and the intimidating atmosphere of the "Hell" away end. Despite a dominant opening 15 minutes and several missed chances from the likes of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, Liverpool returned to Merseyside trailing in this Champions League Round of 16 tie. Ibrahima Konate saw an equalizer cruelly chalked off by VAR for handball, leaving the Reds with a mountain to climb. Can Liverpool overturn the deficit, or is an early European exit on the cards? Post‑Mansfield (A) FA Cup 5th Round / Pre‑Leverkusen (A) UCL R16 1st LegArsenal are into the FA Cup quarterfinals after a gritty, muddy, tough 2–1 win away at Mansfield. In this episode, Tabs and Andy break down a classic lower‑league cup tie full of cliches, heavy tackles, bobbling passes, and two absolute thunder‑bastards from Madueke and Eze that ultimately dragged Arsenal through. The lads dive into the heavily rotated XI — including the historic double‑start for 16‑year‑olds Max Dowman and Marli Salmon, the first time a Premier League club has ever started two 16‑year‑olds in a competitive match . They unpack the confusing, shape‑shifting formation, the early Mansfield pressure, and why the pitch turned the match into a tactical fever dream. There's huge praise for Dowman's outrageous composure and spatial awareness (“the word that comes to mind is inevitable” ), and equal love for Salmon's fearless performance at centre‑back. They also discuss Mosquera's hesitation for the Mansfield goal, Martinelli's frustrating afternoon, Jesus' anonymity, and the growing concern around Calafiori's recurring niggles.Tabs and Andy also look ahead to the Champions League Round of 16 first leg away at Bayer Leverkusen — the atmosphere, the tactical matchup, the likely XI, and why getting the job done early could save Arsenal from a stressful second leg. Billi (@SGPSoccer) breaks down all 8 of the Champions League Round of 16 2nd Leg matches, taking place today and tomorrow. The Madrid Derby was seen as one of the ties of the round, and it remains evenly balanced going into the 2nd Leg. Diego Simeone's side are 2-1 down after the Bernabeu last week, but Real certainly don't have their quarter-final place wrapped up. The visitors head to their cross-town rivals with a poor record in big games this term, despite last week's win. Los Blancos are winless away to La Liga's top eight so far this term, suffering two defeats in those five games.
