Podcast by Kamri Phillippi
She's everyones favorite, and she is 4 today. I love using the podcast as a time capsule of sorts, so here is a portion of a little birthday letter I wrote her last night.
Y'all. We are actually improving over here! This was my favorite episode to record with them by far. It's such a sweet gift to see them grow and change so much even in the two minutes of air time they get on these episodes. Praying this episode finds you well, whether you're totally over quarantine or finally settling into a rhythm that works for you. We are cheering for you!
Its Wednesday, and the gang is back! Its been a bit of a week, as you'll hear in the first 2 minutes, but recording these with my kids always reminds me there is so much good and ever present Light. Praying you find the same is true in your week.
We're back, and sadly our techniques have improved very little. And by very little, I mean none at all. I pray that these little voices encourage you to celebrate your good, acknowledge the hard, and be warmed by all the Light in your life.
Trust me, I'm as shocked as you are - we were able to record both parts within a week. Miracles never cease. This episode focuses heavily on the effects of adoption on our marriage, Foster, and we start our timeline with a video we recorded the night we met the girls. Like we said in the first episode, if there are questions we didn't answer or parts we didn't cover, PLEASE let one of us know and we'd be happy to address it. We're humbled you listen and care about their lives. Happy listening!!!
Well, we like to keep things interesting over here. Lighting Up My Week is getting a bit of a face lift in the form of 4 brown babes and I am pretty excited about it. Its selfish, on my part of course, because I really just want a way to remember their voices in their respective octaves and with their respective diction, forever. Every Wednesday, each of us will be answering the questions: 1) Whats good in your life right now? 2) Whats hard in your life right now? 3) Where are you finding the light? As always, my hope is that you'll answer or ponder these questions in your own life, and that it'll be a source of Light. Happy listening!
It only took 8 months to record!! I always knew that I wanted to sit down and record how Foster's sisters came to us, and I'm really thankful we waited this long to do it. This episode encompasses a lot of context, starting with how we even decided on foster care, when that process started, and a lot of other twists and turns along the way. If you make it all the way through, you'll get a 32 month old surprise at the end. You're welcome. Happy listening!!!
This is a woman I've wanted to share with y'all from the second I met her a year and a half ago. Each time we are together, I walk away either thinking about something differently, or feeling so thankful I have a friend who will go deep, and fast. She is grounded so deeply in scripture, hilarious, and has an awareness for those around her that is astounding. In this episode we talk anxiety, raising girls, working in a Christian School, and feeling the freedom to be who we are, right this second. I hope you feel like you're on the couch right there with us.
A shorter list this week, but it still packs plenty of punch. I hope some of these make it on y'alls lists this week, because they've brought me great joy. 6. Pioneer Woman's Pasta Primavera 5. Serenity Farm's Bread 4. Ghosted by Rosie Walsh 3. Bon Iver's "i,i" 2. The Only Necessary Thing by Henri Nouwen 1. Foster Care License
I don't need any special occasion to sing from the rooftops about this woman, but this episode contains the details behind two gigantic causes for celebration: 1) The Blair's are having a baby 2)The Blair's have moved back to Wichita. If you know Nan at all, you might know that their story to conceiving this baby wasn't what a lot of women experience. She humbly and willingly gives us the whole story, starting with the excitement that comes in the first few months of trying, to the doubt that plagued her mind and heart the very day her and Cole got the call that her blood test showed a positive IVF pregnancy result. Right in the middle of this, they picked up and moved to Minneapolis, MN, which we also cover in detail as well. Since February, Nan being pregnant has been my biggest Hallelujah, and I pray that this episode gives you one more reason to believe He is gracious, kind, and sovereign.
Y'all! It's been a long time, and I've missed you. I've got a list of twelve, as well as a few life updates (foster care, baby making, ya know, the usual). Hey Y'all! A long list this week - I guess I've just missed being with y'all so much that I had too much to tell you! Y'all, we did it. We managed to travel thousands of miles to another country to usher 24 kids into one of the greatest weeks of their lives. And I truly cannot imagine doing it with a more perfect group of people. We laughed, cried, prayed, danced, jumped into the ocean, listened, got pied in the face, ate dessert at every meal, and witnessed 24 kids catch a vision of Who He sees in them. In this episode we talk about how we got to Malibu, both as leaders and travel logistics, the structure of camp, our PHENOMENAL camp speaker, favorite parts, hardest parts, and why we're hanging out with our kids every day for a week after. I love these people deeply, and am reverently thankful He didn't design us to do this work alone.
Lighting Up My Week #16 - Episode 81 by Kamri Phillippi
Y'all. Y'ALL. This woman. Dynamic, brilliant, humble, talented, gracious. Her descriptors are a mile long. I've "known" Hanna for years, as our families have crossed paths in schools in Wichita for a long time, but it wasn't until Christmas Break in 2018 that I really got to sit down with her and have my brains blown out by her brilliance. Hanna attends UNC-Chapel Hill, but because she's a Robertson Scholar, she spends a little time at Duke as well. We spend the majority of this conversation unpacking the summer she spent interning at the Urban Doxology Songwriting Collaborative, where amazingly talented musicians write worship songs for people who can't hear their stories in the ones popular today. We talk about addressing our own implicit bias, injustice, being "too black" for white spaces, and "too white" for black spaces, how much the church has to grow, and whether or not God actually cares about people who live in the projects. We also touch on her talent for, and love of, and writing process for spoken word, and the moment she decided her life's goal wasn't to be President in 2036. Please listen to this, and then share it with anyone that will listen, because these are the conversations I hope we're having until Jesus calls us home. If you want any information on the internship, the organization that founded it, or how to support this ministry, go to www.arrabon.com or reach out to Hanna or myself for my info!
Seven things this week, each unique, and each doing their part to light up my week. Whats on your list this week? 7. Social Animals (documentary on Netflix) 6. The Impossible Burger 5. God Is So Good (You Are Worthy) by Pat Barrett 4. That Sounds Fun with Annie F. Downs episode with Amanda Lindsey Cook (podcast) 3. Finishing the basement for Foster Care (thanks to my father-in-law) 2. Mike Choi's mama 1. Reconciling
What can I say y'all, the man wears many hats. With his recent return to Instagram, one of them now includes a (VERY) below average fitness influencer, where he shares tips and tricks to not even come close to any sort of fitness goal. All jokes aside, Tay does have a significant career update (hint: real estate) to share, and I couldn't be more proud. Something I love most about him is his drive, and it has served our family extremely well in the 4 years we've been married. We also talk briefly about Fortnite, the long journey to the Young Life camp we are taking kids to this summer, and the staff spouse retreat we went to a month ago. Happy listening!
A shorter list this time, but a longer episode! I guess I just missed telling y'all what was lighting me up so badly, that I had to go into extreme detail. Hope they resonate and spur on your own lists of light. 5. The Zoo 4. Not Going Anywhere by Amanda Lindsey Cook 3. Suffering 2. Sitting with my Pop Pop 1. The Young Life Staff Spouse Retreat
Happy Tuesday! Y'all are in for such a treat with this woman. I have technically known Olivia for 20 years, as she and her family lived across the street from my family for years, but was robbed of growing up with her after her family moved to Texas. As you can imagine, a lot has happened since I last saw her! She loves Jesus, her husband, her patients (she was about to start her nursing job the week after this interview happened!) her family, Texas A&M, and the potatoes au gratin she ate on her honeymoon that brought her to tears. She does NOT love pyramid schemes, especially those whose workers approach you in Target. I don't laugh harder at anyones instagram story, yet she can go from hilarity to humble and honest reflection with ease. It is a special thing to know someone as a 4 year old and be able to talk to them 20 years later. I hope y'all love listening to this conversation as much as I had recording it.
Well, this little podcast has been around for 2 years. I wanted to take a minute to thank you, yes YOU, for listening. Whether this is your first listen or you've heard every one, the words thank you don't suffice. I am extremely humbled that you take time to listen, and I continue to pray that it is Light. As I've always tried to do, I want to be honest with y'all and share where I have been. I wrote a letter to myself 3 days ago, not only to worship, but also to chronicle a time I know I will want to remember. I hope that some part of this resonates with you; I've found that in every season of my life, my heart finds something to yearn for and forgets where my contentment lies. I pray that when you listen to my letter, you can find parts of yourself in it, and be comforted by knowing you aren't alone.
Rob Scheer: where to begin? I thankfully picked up Rob's book "A Forever Family: Fostering Change One Child at a Time" at the library in January, and immediately messaged him upon finishing. Reading his story, as you'll hear today, was so impactful, especially since he chose to directly invest right back into a system that can cause devastating hurt. In this episode, we talk about both Rob's birth and foster families, why birth families are not the villains, adopting 4 children of color as a white male, and little things we can do to make change. Rob is passionate about changing the system, because the statistics around it are mind boggling. In response to seeing so many children (including himself) carry around their belongings in trash bags (think about the message that sends kids about their value and worth), Rob started a non-profit called Comfort Cases that gives kids a backpack filled with toiletries and other necessities to help kids in care maintain dignity. It was an honor to talk to Rob and I truly pray this conversation spurs you on to get involved in some way!
A great list of eight for y'all this week! A mix of books, podcasts, South Korean words, and an old man getting down in Turbo Kick. I hope these resonate with the light all around you. 8. Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman 7. Turbo Kick 6. Creative baking 5. Front door happys 4. Basketball: A Love Story (Documentary) 3. The Teacher's Pet (podcast) 2. Teaching Fossy "nunchi" 1. Awakening by Amanda Lindsey Cook
My guest for today is a new friend, but if our conversation is any indicator, she's a good one. Ashley started her company, Love Everywhere, almost 10 years ago, and hearing her talk about its simple yet powerful mission was beautiful. I'm always extremely encouraged watching women give a simple yes of obedience towards the giftings He has given. Her goal is simple; leave notes of encouragement hidden in plain sight for peoples days to be altered. In this episode, we talk all things about her company, but we also talk about living in NYC, being a creative, motherhood, getting engaged after dating for 3 months, miscarriage, and working in the corporate world. Ashley was introduced by a mutual friend in the hopes of getting her message out before International Women's Day, where her company is partnering with Reebok. You could find a card in their shoeboxes! I am so proud of her, and am excited to see all that He continues to do through simple words.
I absolutely love when a podcast guest comes highly recommended (and when we have tons of mutual friends), and Hannah lived up to every hope and dream I had for this conversation. She is PRECIOUS; truly, I kept thinking that over and over when I was talking to you. The way she talks about her husband, family, and friends is how I hope I sound when describing the people I love most. Hannah and I chat marriage, being a working woman (she's a realtor!) cheerleading in college, and the moment she found out her mama was pregnant with her (MUCH) younger brother. Hannah is all things joy, and I know you'll walk away from this conversation with some! Happy listening!
Happy Tuesday! 7 light filled things this week, and my prayer, as always, is that this list opens your eyes, ears, and hearts to the light around you. Thank you for being here with me this week! 7. Veggie Frittata's (from Costco) 6. Raise a Hallelujah by Bethel Music 5. Teaching Sunday School 4. Almond Butter stuffed Dates 3. Broken Harts podcast 2. Panera 1. Watching and cheering on someone as they thrive in an area you don't
Y'all. I don't remember how I found Molly, but it was one of the best discoveries of 2018. You all probably know her from her "Sunday Bakes" on instagram, which are one of the greatest things on the internet right now. I mean, she dresses up as Paula Dean, Julia Child, Ree Drummond (The Pioneer Woman) and Guy Fieri, ALL IN ONE DAY. ACCENTS INCLUDED! What you might not know about Molly, however, is that she has spent her life in the music industry, writing songs I bet all of you have heard on your radio or on TV. I was FLOORED when she told me one of the songs she wrote! She's a wife, mama, friend, daughter, but I was most in awe of her faith, constantly bringing every good and hard thing in her life back to Jesus. Molly exceeds all the hype - Happy listening!
Happy Tuesday! A shorter list this time, and, as usual, I hope it inspires you to start you own lists of light. 8. Rainbow Carrots 7. Ear Hustle (podcast) 6. Back with my favorite person, doing one of my favorite things: reflecting on the year. I truly do love taking the time to look back on a month, year, or season and recount all the Lord has done. Bonus that it was with my person, taking each month of 2018 and breaking down some of the things that lit up our year. We talk trips, special visitors, new jobs, moving cities, and ways we've seen the Lord move. Listen all the way until the end to hear something we are especially excited for in 2019! Happy listening!
You have to be incredibly special to be invited on this podcast as a male, and Calvin exceeds the criteria. A new friend, I met Calvin early this fall when he joined one of my husbands Young Life Leader teams. Tay kept raving about him, and it didn't take me long to realize why! Calvin is a friend, mentor, star wars fanatic, podcaster, and former soccer star. In this episode we talk about Shepherds Way, the non-profit he works for, living with two special needs men, leading high school freshmen, soccer, and of course, he enlightens me on the best star wars movie. I'm thankful for this conversation, and I hope you'll understand why after listening!
Hey Hey! Ten things again for you this week - I'm beginning to think its my magic number. Hey y'all! There are so many words that come to mind when I think of Carson. Vibrant, faithful, deeply empathetic, and as buzz wordy as this adjective has become, intentional. I can't help but use the latter because of how perfectly it describes Carson. She does everything with purpose, especially friendship. I met Carson my sophomore year at Carolina, and it has been one of my most cherished friendships yet. We talk big city livin (specifically NYC), having sisters, how long finding a community takes, and comparison. I love this woman, and after listening, I think you'll want a "Carson" of your own!
I can't believe its been nearly 3 months since this rendition of the podcast! I've missed sharing these sources of light, so I hope most of what I share finds its way into your week, and lights you up, too. 10 things, counting down! 10. Magnolia Table Cookbook by Joanna Gaines 9. "Slow Burn" a podcast covering Watergate and Bill Clinton's impeachment 8. "Good to Me" by Audrey Assad 7. Honey-crisp Apple season 6. Creative baking 5. Basketball season 4. Forgiving myself 3. "Things Above" podcast with James Bryan Smith 2. Sheree, a cashier at our local grocery store 1. Saying "Yes" to interruption Happy listening :)
Recording this episode was incredibly surreal for several reasons. Firstly, I babysat Elley, and her brother Clark, for a handful of years when they were tiny. Secondly, the amount of wisdom and grace and honesty she packs into this episode is astounding. And, she's only 20!! I knew Elley would be something special, but she blew me away. In this episode, we talk comparison, when things don't go your way, college, and why mamas with Reese's save the day. I love this girl and the woman she is and is becoming. I know you will, too! P.s. If you want to check out Elley's blog, which I highly recommend, here's the link! https://standoutstandtall.com
Here it is - the continuation of part 1! Part 2 contains loads of goodness, including when I met Tay and how he's played a healing role, how it manifested in my first job, pregnancy, and an update on how everything is now. I've been so overwhelmed by yalls comments, both through social media, and in person. It is truly an answered prayer for it to mean something to some of yall. Like I say at the end, if any of this resonates, or if you are struggling in the dark, let someone know. Bring it to the light. I think a lot of the things I talk about are normal in our culture and easy to hide behind. It'll feel scary initially, but I promise you won't regret it (I would be happy to listen if you want someone to empathize). Some of my richest friendships to date are because of this shared struggle. Thank you again for listening and showing up every Tuesday. Every single download is a gift! Happy listening!!
Hey Hey! It was time. If you have known me closely for the past several years, you've probably heard me openly talk about it, but might not have ever heard the whole story. I've referenced it in enough episodes, and so many guests (Tay, Kate Strickler, Kathryn Archer, Shelton Current, Caitlin Ball, Haley Rhyne, my parents, Kylie Mitchel, and Robyn Nohling) have played a part in my freedom and recovery. Planning for this episode was surprisingly cathartic; allowing me to pinpoint things that had never cemented in my memory previously, and giving me hope that He will continue to set my feet on solid ground. I also realized that the journey has been longgggggg: hence the need for two parts! Like I share in the beginning, my prayer is that you'd hear His glory and light all over what I share. It isn't my story of triumph (because, lets be honest, I have not arrived!), but rather His of redemption. Even if you don't struggle with this specific sin, I hope me sharing will allow us to connect in some way. Maybe its just the simple fact that none of us have it all together, despite what outward appearances convey!! Happy listening!
Hey Y'all! I recorded this episode over a year ago with my dear friend Kate, and as I was thinking about past episodes I'd love to highlight, this was the first that came to mind. As I said in the first show description, no one has had a more profound spiritual impact on me, aside from my husband. She is all things wonderful; a precious wife, mama, friend, daughter, sister and mastermind in the kitchen. Kate is ALWAYS who she is, which I admire more than words can articulate. FYI - Towards the beginning, Kate's very lively dog goes a little crazy when an Amazon delivery man comes, so be prepared. I know you'll add this episode to your favorites list!
Margaret Kazibwe - Episode 55 by Kamri Phillippi
All I wanted for my birthday was to podcast with my people, and they made my dreams come true!! I rang in 27 years of life with my husband, brother, mama and daddy, talking all things fortnite, family, race, and honoring the memory of someone we all miss desperately. I love these people, and I am certain I wouldn't be who I am at 27 without their love. Happy listening!
Y'all. If you listen to podcasts, chances are, you've heard of "The Popcast," hosted by Knox McCoy and Jamie Golden. Who you might not know, is the master behind the scenes, Erin Hicks Moon (or, Erin "The Edge" Moon for Popcast loyalists). Elated was I when she agreed to chat all things crazy children, theater, conning our husbands into marrying us, how to love an Enneagram 3, the time suck and supreme delight that is instagram and what being President of the Zac Efron fan club really entails. This conversation was pure joy, and Erin is on my bucket list to meet in real life. It was an honor to chat with her for an hour - she's even better than her instagram stories make her out to be. (P.s. If you aren't watching her instagram stories, you aren't living.) Happy listening!
Hey y'all! 8 things for you this week, a shorter list. Knollas pizza 7. Nora's Kitchen food truck 6. Chefs Table (with Christina Tosi) 5. Support team generosity 4. Last Chance U 3. Writing and reading thank you's 2. Oprah's master class (podcast) 1. Its a lot of steps, but I am so thankful!!!
Well, we made it. Fossy celebrated his first year last Friday, so Tay and I sat down to recap the second 6 months of Fossy's life, and talk through expectations vs. reality of parenting. Some topics that came up? Sleep, discipline, our parents, travel, attachment, and being a dad vs. a mama in the first year. We also talk about our plans for fostering and adopting, and it wouldn't be a Tay and Kam podcast if I didn't throw him under the bus at least 3 times. Happy listening!
Hey Y'all! Episode 50 is sort of a milestone, so it is incredibly fitting to have the guest on that I do today. Lindsey's story will leave you speechless. It is one of tragedy, faith, friendship, and provision. Hailing from Charlotte NC, but now currently living in Wilmington, NC, Lindsey openly shares about her family, alcohol addiction, broken relationships, studying abroad, and His grace. At so many parts during the interview, I had to pick my jaw up off of the floor! I was introduced to Lindsey by a mutual friend, Shannon, who texted me a month ago and said, "Kam, you have got to have this girl on your podcast!" Which, by the way, if y'all have guests you want to hear, follow Shannon's lead! Anyways, Shannon was spot on, and I am so thankful Lindsey was willing to share her story. Its on my bucket list to hug her in person! Y'all are in for a treat with this one!

Being Honest 1. Breaking out of routine
Happy Tuesday! I have been so excited to share this conversation with y'all, which makes sense considering the friend Tay has been to me since we've moved back to Wichita in the spring. Married to a resident, and hailing from Tennessee, this episode is full of transitions, (stories of her) tears, intentional investing, and seeing how He provides. In this episode, we talk about how Tay was NOT about Wichita when they first moved, what being married to someone in med school is really like, the temptation of not pressing in because you know your situation isn't permanent, and, of course, why she's so excited to get back to the South. You will love Tay's honesty, spirit and heart. I am so thankful for the way her and her husband live, everything having a purpose, because it reminds me how much power we really have in loving others around us. Happy listening!
Happy Tuesday! I have a special one for y'all today, recorded with none other than my favorite person. Tay recently had a HUGE career shift (leaving his job in health care admin and accepting a position as Area Director for private schools for Wichita Young Life) and I wanted to not only pick his brain now that he's been in the job for over a month, but also share how it is impacting our family. Questions answered: What is Young Life? Why would you leave corporate America to make a fraction of what you once did? Why does everyone love Young Life camp so much? What does "raising support" mean? If y'all feel so inclined, you can join our financial or prayer support team. We would be honored by your partnership. To give, https://giving.younglife.org/taylorphillippi To join our prayer team, email me at kamriphox@gmail.com Hope y'all have a great rest of your week. As always, I am beyond humbled that you listen.
It's Tuesday! I was first introduced to Nafissa through her stunning debut short story collection, "Heads of the Colored People." I devoured it in a single day, and as soon as I parted ways with the final page, I wished I could start over. Refreshingly honest, remarkably hilarious, and incredibly representative of a marginalized group of black people living in this country, it is receiving high praise, and she deserves every bit of it. It was such a treat to sit down and pick her brain about the characters in her book, writing, living with a chronic illness, her husband, and whether they'll send their kids to private (like her experience) or public (like her husband's) school. Go and pick up her book as soon as humanly possible - even if you don't resonate, it will help broaden your perspective on how people (me!) exist around you.
Hey Y'all! Happy Almost 4th of July -- I've got 13 things for you this week, all of which I hope bring some light to your week. 13. Ice Cream for Breakfast 12. Scripture Memory 11. Hey y'all! If you know Heidi, you're wondering why it's taken me so long to get her into your earbuds. She is light. Heidi and I went to middle and high school together, but it wasn't until college and post grad that it became something special. Heidi is my look to person for how to bring people in. She is a gold medalist at pursuing people, all the while running the risk of being rejected. In this episode we talk about the trauma conference she just got back from, working in public schools, why it's sometimes hard to be friends with people in seasons you desire for yourself one day. My favorite part of the episode is at the very end; Heidi honestly shares about when God taught her (EXTREMELY VIVIDLY, I might add) how much she needs Him. Its worth the listen just to get to that story! Hope y'all enjoy.
