- Speaker: Isaac Gagarinas - Today, we take the principles we have discussed so far and apply them to the smartphone. Utilizing Tony Reinke's book, 12 Ways Your Phone is Changing You, we focus on the topic of distraction. The smartphone is a modern technology that provides many benefits to society but also comes with dangers. Few dangers are clearer than distraction. This class seeks to consider why our smartphones are uniquely designed to contribute to our distraction and why we ourselves have an appetite for distraction. By understanding our phones and getting at the heart of distraction, we then consider several biblical principles to move away from distraction and move our hearts toward the eternal things of Scripture. It is from these principles and heart postures that we can then form healthy phone habits.
Have you checked your phone's screen time lately? If you're anything like me, you might be embarrassed about how much time you actually spend on your phone, specifically the time spent scrolling on social media. I use social media for both work and personal purposes, and I was beginning to feel like I was spending way more time on these apps than I wanted to be.So, I decided to challenge myself by giving up social media for a month! I was curious to see how a break from social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook would affect my daily life. In this episode, I'm sharing the highs and lows of this experiment. You'll hear how it felt to step away from the digital noise, the impact on my personal relationships, and even some unexpected benefits I discovered along the way. This conversation also applies to your professional role. As school counselors, our relationship with social media can be a double-edged sword. While it helps us connect and share valuable resources, it's important to maintain a healthy balance. I hope this episode inspires you to reflect on your own social media habits and even take on a similar challenge if you're feeling up to it! If you have ever tried a social media hiatus, send me a message on Instagram @counselorclique (yes, I'm back, but with healthy boundaries!) or an email to lauren@counselorclique.com. We all flub up from time to time. None of us are perfect parents. But there are a few very big, but very common parenting mistakes we'd like to avoid or counteract if we can. As mothers, we love our children dearly and want the very best for them in life. We want to nurture and protect them and to fill their childhood with wonderful opportunities to learn and grow and create lasting memories. Isn't that right? Yet sometimes, the things we do in an attempt to “help our kids out” end up “holding them back” instead. Sometimes, our parenting mistakes actually just serve to handicap our children. Countless habits fall into this category, but in this episode of Loving Life at Home, we'll look at six parenting practices -- all extremely common in our current culture -- that will sabotage your child's future success if you don't guard against them. When you turn off your phone, you might assume that it's completely disconnected from the world. But the truth is that there are several ways that law enforcement agencies and others can track your location, even when it's turned off. In this episode, we explore the various methods that can be used to locate a phone, including IMEI tracking, IP address tracking, GPS tracking, and cell tower triangulation. We also discuss the recent case of Bryan Kohberger - the man arrested for murdering four people in Moscow, Idaho - where the fact that he turned his phone off during the time of the murders was used as key evidence against him.But tracking technology isn't just used as a benefit in criminal investigations - it can also have implications for our everyday privacy. We consider the ways that our phone usage can leave an invisible trail, and we offer tips for protecting your privacy when it comes to your phone. The final session in our Spring Community Groups discusses how "We lose our place in time." The seasons of our lives are now stacked in social media feeds which we endlessly scroll. This causes us to forget our place in the here and now as well as forget the commands of God. Technology can make life easier, but immaturity makes that technology self-destructive. If you'd like a copy of the worksheet, email Jay@mybethel.cc.
Session 12 discusses how "We become harsh." Our phones have made it easier to judge others actions and call them out online. But how does the Bible say we should confront people who are doing wrong, and how can we apply it to the technology-age? If you'd like a copy of the worksheet, email Jay@mybethel.cc.
The eleventh session of our Community Group is about how "We Fear Missing Out." We are tethered to our devices because we want to know, want to see, and don't want to be left out of what others are doing. While this is not a healthy way to live, there is one legitimate FOMO we should all have! If you would like of a copy of the handout for this session, please email jay@mybethel.cc.
Session 10 discusses how "We lose meaning." Smartphones make it easy to share and ingest a steady diet of pointless information. In contrast, Christians must consume a steady diet of wisdom. When we turn to God, we find the most precious wisdom and knowledge is not embedded in the newest device or the latest post on social media, but found in Jesus Christ. If you'd like a copy of the worksheet, email Jay@mybethel.cc.
Is it godly to be anti-tech? Recent studies indicate the average American teen is spending 7-9 hours a day in front of a screen. Even if our students are not consumed by media 7-9 hours a day, technology for us as adults and our children is an inevitable part of life. Too often our way of mitigating this influence is simply to implement an ever-increasing number and kind of filters and controls. While that is important, my guest today, Tony Reinke, provides a thoughtful and thorough examination of our relationship with technology and the underlying theology we should use to choose how to live the Christian life well in our digital age. Tony's observations are both realistic and hopeful as he makes practical recommendations for how we live in the world of technology but keep from being of it! Join Davies Owens for the latest episode of BaseCamp Live.---Tony Reinke is a journalist, teacher, and host of the Ask Pastor John podcast for Desiring God. He is the author of Lit!: A Christian Guide to Reading Books and Competing Spectacles and 12 Ways Your Phone is Changing You.
Session 9 is a review week for our Community Groups. We covered the first 8 ways our phones are changing us earlier this semester. After taking a few weeks off for Spring Break and Easter, we are discussing whether or not we control our phones or do our phones control us. If you'd like a copy of the worksheet, email Jay@mybethel.cc.
Session 8 discusses how "We become comfortable in secret vices." Our phones have made it easier than ever to hide our sin. What used to be inconvenient or more difficult because of physical distance has practically been eliminated with technology. But God sees everything! How are you safeguarding yourself from smartphone sin? If you'd like a copy of the worksheet, email Jay@mybethel.cc.
In the first ever P4P book review, Wesley reads and discusses some portions of Tony Reinke's book: "12 Ways Your Phone is Changing You."
The seventh session of our Community Group is about how "We Get Lonely" even in a group or despite having connections through social media. If you would like of a copy of the handout for this session, please email jay@mybethel.cc.
The sixth session of our Community Group is about how "We Become Like What We 'Like.'" We are all trying to become like someone else, and hopefully, you are striving to be more like Christ. If you would like of a copy of the handout for this session, please email jay@mybethel.cc.
In this episode, we discuss FOMO also termed as the Fear Of Missing Out. How does this impact the Christian, and is this something new? Here is a link to the book which is mentioned in this episode: 12 Ways Your Phone is Changing You (By: Tony Reinke) : https://www.amazon.com/Ways-Your-Phone-Changing-You/dp/B06Y1GMWF5/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1U7B7HOCVDEJT&keywords=12+ways+your+phone+is+changing+you&qid=1645500678&sprefix=12+ways+your+phone+is+changing+you%2Caps%2C81&sr=8-1
Session five deals with our desire to "Feed on the Produced." Everything real, meaning all of creation, is mediated by God. Man takes the mediated and reproduces it into the intermediated. Christians have to be aware of the biases and interpretations of intermediated content. Everything a Christian creates or shares should bring God glory, and the intermediated, whether intentional or inadvertent, can be used for evil. For a copy of the handout for this session, email Jay@mybethel.cc.
Session 4 discusses how "We are losing our literacy." Research shows that comprehension is better with print versus digital material. Reading and understanding the Bible is a lifetime investment. The Bible shouldn't be read in the same way we scroll our social media feeds. If you'd like a copy of the worksheet, email Jay@mybethel.cc.
Session 1 of our Community Group is "We are addicted to distractions." Whether you have a smartphone, a dumb phone, or no phone, you cannot escape a life of distractions. We use these distractions to ignore our families, our work, and even God. If you'd like a copy of the worksheet, email Jay@mybethel.cc.
Session two is "We ignore our own flesh and blood." From texting and driving to sending an angry email, technology has the potential to get in the way of our physical relationships. Although we can't get away from remote and digital communication altogether, let's do better at loving through our physical presence. If you'd like a copy of the worksheet, email Jay@mybethel.cc.
The third session deals with how "We crave immediate approval." You may not even realize that you use social media in order to get attention, gain approval, or seek praise from others. The problem with this mindset is that all of the glory and praise should go to God not to us. If you'd like a copy of the worksheet, email Jay@mybethel.cc.

To me, it just smacked of greed or worldliness and I couldn't help but picture climbing the ladder, elbowing people along the way and doing anything you could for more money and more success. But it turns out there are actually two different kinds of ambition and the Bible paints a clear picture of each. There's the version where you wake up and "pour yourself a cup of ambition" and go to the office -- or stay in your home office -- and work 9 to 5 and try to get to the top of the ladder even when everything's working against you -- yes, just like Dolly Parton's song. This is in line with Merriam-Webster's definition which states that ambition is “an ardent desire for rank, fame, or power.”Now think about that for a moment. Who gets the rank? Who gets the fame? Who gets the power? The person with the desire to get it. The person who is ambitious. It's all about that person. The Bible minces no words when it comes to this kind of ambition. It just calls it for what it is: selfish ambition.“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself” (Philippians 2:3). In this passage and others where the Bible talks about selfish ambition, the root Greek word is eritheia which means faction, strife and contention. This is the same kind of ambition we read about in James 3, “But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. “Contrast that with what the apostle Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:9. “Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him.” The root Greek word for this good kind of ambition -- the kind that results in God's pleasure -- is philotimeomai which refers to striving earnestly. So my question for you this week is what kind of ambition do you have? The one characterized by contentious strife or the one characterized by earnest striving? The one that is focused on you getting what you want -- whether that's approval, recognition, fame or more money -- or the one that is focused on pleasing the Lord?Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, how good and how kind you are. You know I love you but sometimes I really struggle with my motivation. Sometimes I'm selfishly ambitious -- craving approval, recognition and success the way the world sees it. But when I'm looking upward to you, that all goes away and I'm ambitious for your glory and for your pleasure. This week, please help me have the good kind of ambition -- the kind that esteems you and others higher than myself. I can't do this alone.
