Thin privilege exists. It's not a blessing, an entitlement, a praise on anyone's body size (or lack thereof), it's not a label, not something you've asked for, and not something you've earned. It is sociocultural and systemic. It is oppressing body types that exist outside the accepted norm. It is the ease of existing in this world, as Cara Harbstreet put it, "without the shadow of weight stigma following you around."  But first: Robyn Nohling and I co-host this episode and do a quick real-life-check-in, talk about why people ask food/health questions to the non-experts, and then, of course, thin privilege.  The post that re-sparked this discussion about thin privilege in the dietetics world: "We have to talk about thin privilege" by Kathleen Meehan RD. On Episode 17 we are joined by Hannah Meier for a conversation about disordered eating, hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) and women's health, and the challenges of recovery from HA and disordered eating.  Hannah is a registered dietitian living in Boston, MA where she works for a health food company by day and runs a private nutrition practice, Nutrition in Real Life, by "night" (and weekends). She is passionate about demystifying nutrition and breaking down BS diet rules, helping everyone find joy in food again and peace with their bodies. Hannah is openly recovering from 10 years of hypothalamic amenorrhea and hopes her story will encourage other women to feel less ashamed about their hormonal health and more empowered to live a fulfilling and unencumbered life. Stay tuned after the episode for our weekly Q&A. This week's topic is about body comparisons and how our bodies look in photos. How do you bounce back from a blow to your body image or self-esteem? Hey Hey! It was time. If you have known me closely for the past several years, you've probably heard me openly talk about it, but might not have ever heard the whole story. I've referenced it in enough episodes, and so many guests (Tay, Kate Strickler, Kathryn Archer, Shelton Current, Caitlin Ball, Haley Rhyne, my parents, Kylie Mitchel, and Robyn Nohling) have played a part in my freedom and recovery. Planning for this episode was surprisingly cathartic; allowing me to pinpoint things that had never cemented in my memory previously, and giving me hope that He will continue to set my feet on solid ground. I also realized that the journey has been longgggggg: hence the need for two parts! Like I share in the beginning, my prayer is that you'd hear His glory and light all over what I share. It isn't my story of triumph (because, lets be honest, I have not arrived!), but rather His of redemption. Even if you don't struggle with this specific sin, I hope me sharing will allow us to connect in some way. Maybe its just the simple fact that none of us have it all together, despite what outward appearances convey!! Happy listening!

I invited the fabulous Robyn Nohling, FNP, RD, MSN who is both a registered dietitian and board certified family nurse practitioner who specializes in women's health along with eating disorders and disordered eating to tack the topic of hormones with me on the podcast. We talk about her philosophical and treatment approach evolution throughout her career so far, explore some of the flaws in our current healthcare system, and talk in-depth about hormone physiology. We also talk about how hormone dysfunction manifests in various disease states and talk about some practical steps you can take to start putting the puzzle pieces together if you're concerned about your hormone health. Robyn Nohling, dietitian and Family Nurse Practitioner, is one of my favorite gals to chat with about all things intuitive eating. She has written about the ways in which she shifted her approach to exercise on her blog, The Real Life RD. We have both trained for endurance running events, and think of exercise a little differently now that we do work in this space. We also both work with women recovering from Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA), during which exercise may have to take a back seat, or be stopped entirely. We dive into what it means to enjoy exercise, feeling the difference between exercising for the psychological benefits instead of in hopes of physical changes.   Our culture’s obsession with suffering and powering through workouts in order to “gain” fitness or prove that you’re strong shapes doesn’t foster “health” in every sense. Listen to this episode to step back and take a hard look at your habits and patterns with exercise, and try to keep an open mind to approaching it with a little more self-awareness and care.   Robyn’s work and services: thereallife-rd.com 2 CEU Webinar for RDs mentioned in our conversation: How to Take the Anti-Diet Approach to Your Dietetics Career 10 principles of Intuitive Eating   Questions? I found Robyn through Kylie (episode 25!) and her blog (thereallife-rd.com) has been such a source of joy. In this episode we talk about her recent move from NYC to Boston, marriage, how she ended up in nursing school, and how God puts you right where He wants you even before knowing Him. I know the holidays have us moving at a faster pace, so my prayer for this episode is that you'd give yourself a moment to slow down while listening. If you experience digestive issues or period problems, then this is the episode for you. Today I'm joined by Robyn Nohling, a Nurse Practitioner & Registered Dietitian based in NYC who specialises in eating disorders and women's health. We talk about how restricting food to try and solve your digestive issues might be self-defeating, and could cause more stress and functional problems if you're not addressing the underlying causes. We discuss the gut-brain axis and the role stress plays on our digestive system and how just thinking a food is bad for you might cause a negative physiological response (the nocebo effect). Plus the best ways to support your digestive health if you're recovering from restrictive eating. Then we switch things up and talk about periods, hormones, and what the heck is causing your period to disappear, aka hypothalamic amenorrhea. Plus what to do to help you get your period back, and what the big deal is with it being gone in the first place!
