A Note from James:Civil war… Honestly, I had an Uber driver the other day and he asked me, in the middle of the drive, "Hey, do you have your go bag?" And I'm like, "What's that?" And he said when the civil war starts - "and it's going to start any day, definitely before the 2024 election," he said - "you need to have your go bag. So wherever you are, you can just go right up into the mountains. Put up your tent, get your plasma lights, get your almond butter and seeds and honey. And you better learn how to like forage for vegetables and hunt and start a fire." I'm like, "What are you talking about?" And he pointed to the passenger seat next to him.He had a go bag ready in the Uber car. He said it could happen anytime where he just can't, you can't go back to the city. You can't go back to your home because the Civil War has started. And I got nervous. I think as I get older, I really don't want the status quo to change that much. And, there's a movie coming out, "Civil War", Texas and the federal government are having these conflicts and you're about to hear more about that.So let's get right into it…A few years ago, a guy who's a regular guest on the podcast - has been since 2014. I can't believe this is the 10th year I'm doing this, but I love doing it. But one of my first guests, anyway, he came on in 2020, he said, "James, you're hearing it from me. Now there's going to be a civil war."I said, "no way it's impossible," but now it's like in the news. I still don't believe there's going to be any kind of civil war at least one where people are shooting at each other with guns, which sounds ridiculous to me, but now at least it's the, in the public discussion and there's a movie coming out and people are nervous about this upcoming election. So here we go. Tucker Max, coming back on the show to explain a little bit more why he predicted this, what he predicts now, and what will lead up to a potential civil war in 2024. The conversation didn't make me that happy, but I always prefer to be informed than not informed. So here we go. Episode Description:Tucker Max discusses a civil war prediction within the United States, made by an Uber driver who believes it would happen before the 2024 election. Max talks about the current political climate and the possible scenarios that could lead to a civil confrontation, mentioning that the war has already started in some respects. He also discusses the recent developments with states ignoring federal mandates or creating their own laws, leading towards a more decentralized form of governance. Additionally, the conversation shifts to personal memoirs, where Max discusses his work teaching others how to write memoirs and understanding their truths. He suggests that memoir writing is a constant process of truth discovery and self-acknowledgement. I'm constantly thinking about food and flavors and combos and what's going to go good together.Laura Harris and Zach Meier and building a healthy vegan protein bar company in Colorado. This enables them to take advantage of Colorado's intrastate exemption from securities rules for IPOs to raise capital from the local crowd exclusively. The company has three flavors on the market:* Blueberry Coconut* Salted Chocolate Cherry* Peanut Butter BananaThe last one was a challenge for Zach, the chef who develops the bars. “A funny story with the peanut butter banana. I am deathly allergic to bananas,” he says. “So creating that recipe for the peanut butter banana bar was a bit of a task. It was a lot of whipping up some ingredients, putting them together, having people taste them, getting their honest feedback, and then just, like, doing it again.”Laura shares how she came up with the idea:Having worked in the service industry for most of my adult life, you never get a break. Protein bars became a staple of my diet. I always had one on my server apron if I was serving or on top of the register if I was bartending. Back in 2018 summer, I was bartending a lunch shift, took a bite of another competitor's bar and thought, man, I wish this thing was packed with spinach. I would love for it to not contain any artificial flavors and no refined or added sugar.I thought about it for a few minutes and did some searching on Google and Amazon, and there was nothing like it. So, six months later, I enlisted the help of Zach. Zach is passionate about making great products. “Creating these recipes was a lot of fun, just with the ideology of super minimal ingredients. Everything is clean, everything all-natural, you know, not using any chemicals or preservatives, or added sugars because I always like to say that real foods taste the best.”Investing in the company is an opportunity to have impact in several ways. The company founder is an LGBTQ woman, ticking two impact boxes for investors with goals to support diverse founders. The products are vegan, which could have climate and animal welfare benefits. The bars are healthy, potentially helping people to live longer, healthier lives. That's a lot of impact! The company is raising via CrowdSprout.co under state crowdfunding laws, limiting investors to that state.AI Episode Summary1. Devin Thorpe hosts Laura Harris and Zach Meier on the Superpowers for Good show to discuss their company, Greens Gone Wild.2. Laura started Greens Gone Wild to create snack bars packed with spinach and no added sugars or unnatural flavors.3. Laura's future plan involves living a van life to promote the product across Colorado; Zach will handle backend operations.6. Laura's superpower is her ability to genuinely connect with people and her passion for real food ingredients.7. Zach's superpower lies in his culinary skills, particularly in creating exciting flavor profiles with clean, natural ingredients.8. Both find using their skills to contribute to the well-being and diets of their customers and their communities rewarding.9. Laura encourages listeners to visit their website to purchase products and consider investing in the growth of the company.10. The co-founders' dedication to providing healthy and tasty snack options is underscored by their interaction with customers and commitment to quality ingredients.Want to invest but live outside Colorado, share this with friends in the state. How to Develop Interpersonal Skills As a SuperpowerLaura says that her ability to relate well with people is a critical part of her success in business. She honed her ability to care for and about people after her father had a stroke. The biggest time where I really was able to give a lot of myself to someone else was when I took care of my dad. He had a right-side ischemic stroke and was on the floor for three days before anybody found him. So, he was not doing great when our neighbor found him. So, I moved from Minneapolis back to my home state of Virginia to help him and just see him through this healing journey post-stroke. There were so many challenges that he faced. I always made sure I showed up for him every day and did anything that he needed me to do and help out in all the ways that were best for him, to give him love and support and make sure he had a good last five years of life.Laura says the first thing to do to strengthen interpersonal skills is to listen. “When you ask someone questions, be genuine. Pause. Let them finish. That'll be lesson number one.”“Show love,” she says of a second aspect of developing interpersonal skills. “If someone needs help, help them do it out of the goodness of your heart. And, uh, not just to try to gain something.”By following Laura's example and advice, you can strengthen your interpersonal skills. With practice, you can make them a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!How to Develop Culinary Skills As a SuperpowerZach shares the story of how he uses his culinary superpower:I grew up kind of in the middle of nowhere, Wyoming. Not kind of, like in the middle of nowhere, Wyoming. It was a food desert up there. Being from just such a small kind of reclusive community, people aren't necessarily open to trying new foods. The idea of veganism up there, or like, health foods, is still a poked fun at subject. I've been able to, when I go home when I visit family, bring some food culture back to them, to maybe open their eyes a little bit more. Just because it says vegan, just because it says spinach, just because it says protein bar, doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to be gross. It's this ideology of, like, oh, spinach is gross. Spinach is a relatively flavorless ingredient. Adding the combination of its fruit, its vegetables–just because it's vegan, it's not bad. It's not scary. His advice to people is to “Just eat it” when you are presented with a new food to try!By following his example and advice, you can strengthen your culinary skills. With practice, you could make them a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. [RECIPE IN SHOW NOTES] Need to rethink that jar of Almond Butter you bought in a fit of do-good resolve? I can relate to LOVING the look of an expensive jar of nut butter while in the shops but once trying (and failing) to spread it on toast you realise it's stiffer than a rock of half-baked clay and... quite... goddamn... dry! Forget nut "butter" - it's a misnomer, and repurpose that minced nut gravel into delicious, decadent, nutty choc cookies. Want more food tips? Check out the 5 Minute Food Fix Instagram. Recipe Ingredients 250g cashew or almond butter (1 cup) 150g dark chocolate 1/3 cup olive, grapeseed or coconut oil 1/4 milk or nut milk 1 cup of brown sugar 2 tbs vanilla extract 1 egg 1/2 tsp bicarb soda 1/2 tsp baking powder 1 cup macadamia nuts, 1/2 cup choc chips (optional, make em good if you can) 1 1/2 cups plain, wholemeal flour. Method Melt nut butter, dark chocolate, oil and milk together (you can use a microwave or a mixing bowl over a pot of boiling water). Once melted, add brown sugar and vanilla extract and mix well. Add an egg, 1/2 tsp bicarb soda, 1/2 tsp baking powder. (It'll be stiff as buggery, don't worry). Then add macadamia nuts and choc chips (if using) and stir until just combined, before adding in the flour. Chill the dough for a couple of hours. Then roll out 8 cookies Bake at 180C for 15 mins See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Aaron Zober brings on Tim Richards to The Appropriate Omnivore podcast. Tim recently rebranded The Philosopher's Stoneground as Philosopher Foods. Philosopher Foods makes organic craft almond and coconut butters. Tim talks about everything almond farming. Conventional almond farming is one of the most unsustainable types of agriculture with its heavy use of water and pesticides. Tim explains though that we don't need to give up our love for almonds as they can be grown sustainably. He then gets into how almonds have many health benefits. Philosopher Foods also produces coconut butter. While the coconuts currently used come from regenerative agriculture, Tim gets into his quest to use regenerative almonds. Plus Tim talks about issues related with using truly raw almonds and what products we can expect from Philosopher Foods in the future.

It's a nutty episode: co-hosts Katie and Jen talk about Americans' obsession with peanut butter (plus Italians' indifference to the stuff), Haiti's "spicy peanut butter," and the various peanut "seasonings" in south Asian cuisines. Later on Food52 resident and Great British Bake-Off semi-finalist Chetna Makan joins to talk about her later-in-life adoption and love of nut butters.Special thanks to listener Deandra for your question and Brian Quinn (@bqfunk) for our theme music.

With her company Barney Butter, Dawn Kelley has developed a unique way of making almond butter that avoids bitterness and that nasty, pasty texture so many products on the market have. Barney Butter also offers a no added salt or sugar version, making it one of the healthiest almond butters on the market. On the show Linda and Dawn discuss the health benefits of almond butter—ranging from better sleep to stronger bones—and tasty ways of integrating it into your diet. They also discuss the year Dawn’s life turned upside down (for the better)—a year in which she quit one job, started another, moved from Southern California to Maine and married a man with three kids. By the way it was also the year, she turned forty.

Hey Weight Loss Nation! www.TheWeightLossNation.com Delicious Blueberry Popsicles Prep Time – 5 minutes Ingredients 2 Cups of Fresh Blueberries ¾ Cup of either a. Chobani Non-Fat Plain Yogurt or So Delicious Coconut Milk Unsweetened Vanilla Yogurt Alter ½ Cup of Almond Butter ( I use Artisana Raw Organic Almond Butter) Go to www.ArtisanaOrganics.com 1 teaspoon of Vanilla (REAL Vanilla has no alcohol in it.) Vanilla EXTRACT does contain Alcohol as a preservative. The most sought after type of REAL Vanilla is Madagascar Vanilla. As the name suggests….the Vanilla beans or pure extract come from the island of Madagascar. Madagascar is about 266miles off the East Coast of South Africa….or directly East of the country of Mozambique. Madagascar Vanilla is expensive. For a 2 oz. bottle on the Amoretti.com website, you will pay about $11.99. By Comparison…..Vanilla Extract…which does contain alcohol, can be bought at your local supermarket. I priced a 2 oz bottle of “McCormick’s” Vanilla Extract at Walmart for $8.12. Buy whichever type of Vanilla floats your boat. There isn’t a tremendous difference in taste. One has alcohol in it…..the other doesn’t. Where do you BUY the Popsicle Molds? On Amazon of course! I like the “Mamasicles” brand. They cost $7.99 at the time this episode was recorded and have “ 6 Popsicle Molds.” Go to goo.gl/UyoDyN to find the “Mamasicles.” Ok….Let’s make some Healthy, Delicious Popsicles! EASY Peasy Instructions: Blend the Blueberries, Yogurt, Almond Butter and Vanilla in a blender until Smooth. Pour the mixture into your Popsicle Mold. Insert the sticks into each mold Freeze until solid When You’re ready for a Delicious, Healthy Snack……Pop out a Blueberry Popsicle and Enjoy! I’ve stated several times on this show…….dark colored fruits and vegetables get their color due to the Flavonoid called “Anthocyanin” Flavonoids provide the powerful anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory properties and ……they produce the vibrant, dark color in foods. That means that Blueberries…..are part of our “Pac Man” Family! No surprise there Nation! Flavonoids like….”Flavonois” and “Flavan-3-ols” are highly effective in “searching, Fighting and help in Destroying Free Radical Cells” in your body, that cause cancers. Jordyn Gatti started his business, Better Almond Butter, to affect change in the food industry; he makes a statement with the kind of almonds he uses, how they're treated and how they're packaged (no plastic!). So how did Jordyn get into this? He never went to college and decided to be a musician...then went into filmmaking (that’s how I met him years ago)...and then, a couple years ago, started Better Almond Butter and it's been making splashes in the food industry and gaining followers. He tells us how he uses storytelling -- something he sees as a thread in his life and pursuits -- in his brand and business, and how that starts a conversation with a customer on the shelf level. We also open the bonkers can of worms that is almonds. Sprouted, unpasteurized...what does all that mean? We get you the answers here.Food, social change and creativity -- these three things are interwoven and Jordyn's story encapsulates that Venn diagram.Don’t forget to sign up for my e-newsletter! The Portland fog has fallen upon us and we’re kicking off this unintentionally hygge-themed episode with some autumnal hibernation topics (think: sleep, snacks, and meditation). Joining us this time around are Keeley Tillotson and Erika Welsh, best friends and co-founders of Portland-based, nut-butter centric brand, Wild Friends. We chat with these inspiring women about making nut butter fun, one wellness trend at a time.

Crowns and Flops: My So-called Motivational Speaking and My Pink Yeti Cup Flops: Before I literally started recording this episode, there was a lot going on. Talk about noise, conundrum, and agitation! There was so much noise from the appliances (e.g. the washing machine, the dishwasher, the bathroom exhaust fan, tv, etc.) and the kids fighting each other. To hush everything, I had to yell at my family just to stop every little thing and every little human from making sounds. It was very frustrating. I also stumbled on a hilarious post that made me laugh so hard which is very related to my flop. The post said, "If you walk by my house and hear me yelling, it's not yelling. I call it motivational speaking for people that don't want to listen." Executive Chef John McConnell of Clif Family Winery's Bruschetteria Food Truck shows us how to make an Almond Apricot Cake with Almond Butter Frosting and Toasted Almonds. Almonds have long been a staple ingredient in baked goods, and in this recipe, Chef McConnell uses almond flour, almond butter, and decorative sliced almonds. Almonds and apricots are a classic duo in desserts, and he uses apricots in this cake to add a sweet, tart fruity contrast to the nutty almonds. Lindsay Taylor is the host of today's listener Q&A show and will not be rapping at the beginning of the show. She will be answering questions about fueling that come in from listeners. If you want to be fat adapted, it doesn't mean you have to be totally anti-carb. [00:01:54] If you choose to fuel, does that mean you are not fat-adapted? [00:06:07] From Danielle: What do you suggest for training and racing fuel? [00:07:24] What does "trickle in carbohydrates" mean? [00:08:42] What type of real food can be use during events? [00:11:14] It is a terrible idea to change your fueling strategy just before an event. [00:15:50] From David: We are a group running a long run race with four different legs, and we want to know the best fuel to bring with us. [00:17:10] There are good primal friendly bread recipes so you can still carry sandwiches. [00:18:41] From Carl: Are there any food recommendations for some primal foods I can take for my long trek on the Appalacian Trail? Most of the dehydrated foods available are "fat free” which does not go with the primal diet. And Scott asks a similar question for his solo bike-packing trip. What can I use in addition to Almond Butter and MCT for fueling on my long trip? [00:20:58] Don't MCT oil and coconut oil cause some people digestive distress? [00:24:35] Elana’s Pantry Organifi
Hunting the big mountains of the west is demanding, physically and mentally. You can travel to the spot, but when the hunt is on, you need to kick into high gear. On a hunt, Kristy Titus needed that extra gear when it counted most, but couldn't get there. She says, "I was so gassed that I was tasting blood". She was the overweight non-athlete and she was out of shape. It wasn't fun. This self realization set the stage for years to come. Kristy vowed to herself to never let anything like that happen again and today Kristy is always in shape for hunting the big mountains. It's become a life style of dieting, exercise, mindset and even body building for competition. This is the result of a desire to keep pace with the demands of hunting big game on big mountains.
