Welcome back to the Gratefully Nourished podcast! I hope you enjoy this new season's focus on finding meaning in the midst of chaos plus the integration of all things motherhood, faith, life, and simplicity in addition to nutrition and health. Like I say in the intro, for a long time I struggled to make Gratefully Nourished all about nutrition. At this point, I know that's because health is more than just what we eat and I am more than just a registered dietitian. Join us as we talk about honoring our health without obsession and all the pieces of life in between. I'm so happy you're here! For those who have been following along with our Sacred Rhythms Book Club Podcast, you'll be extra excited for today's podcast guest! Kylie Mitchell, MPH, RD and I are talking with Megan Stewart who is the founder and Spiritual Director of Camp46! We're talking about soul care, how to slow down, how to find space to be with God and why all of this is so foreign to most of us. More about Megan: Hi, I'm Meg and I am the founder and spiritual director of Camp 46! I believe God is always with you. He is intentional, intimate, and in union with specifically you! Yet, this world is filled with tasks, noise, and so much hurry that it can be difficult to connect with Him. Camp 46 is a space to step back from the noise, and get away with God through spiritual direction, retreats, and soul care sessions. Come find me at our basecamp – Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God.” My hope here is that you would begin to be still, and know that you are seen, known, and loved by Jesus. Welcome to the seventh and final episode of our podcast book club series on Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton. I'm joined by Kylie Mitchell, MPH, RD of ImmaEatThat to discuss Chapter 8: Sabbath and Chapter 9: Rule of Life. This is our second podcast book club series -- the first was on Breaking Free from Body Shame by Jess Connolly and aired on Kylie's ImmaEatThat Podcast. We landed on Sacred Rhythms for our next book because as we were talking about the importance of renaming our bodies as good and making peace with food and body image in our last book club, we kept coming back to this idea of slowing down and finding space to be with God. In this episode, we talk about: If we do not allow for a rhythm of rest in our overly busy lives, illness becomes our Sabbath – our accidents created Sabbath for us How we long for rest, for sabbath, for joy, for delight The idea that sabbath is more than just a day's rest - it is a way of orienting one's life around a pattern of working six days and then resting on the seventh The importance of honoring the limitations of our humanness through sabbath Components of sabbath -- what to include/exclude What a rule of life is, which is simply a pattern of attitudes, behaviors and practices that are regular and routine and are intended to produce a certain quality of life and character How a rule of life seeks to answer the question: "How do I want to live so I can be who I want to be?" Practical examples of where Kylie and I are in developing our own rules of life And more! Thank you to all who have listened to the entire series -- we highly recommend listening from the beginning so you can get a full picture of these rhythms and of course reading the book for yourself :-) Join the Gratefully Nourished Facebook Community for support and encouragement. Welcome to the sixth episode of our podcast book club series on Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton. I'm joined by Kylie Mitchell, MPH, RD of ImmaEatThat to discuss Chapter 6: Self-Examination and Chapter 7: Discernment. We're excited to talk through this book with you. Quite frankly, this episode was the most challenging for both Kylie and I but not because these practices aren't important. We find them hard to put into words and we are both very much still processing them for our own lives. In this episode, we talk about: How we all long to be known and loved unconditionally - the problem is most of us aren't willing to be seen so completely. Psalm 139, which begins by acknowledging that God has already searched me and already knows me through and through. There is nothing I can do and no place I can go that is beyond God's presence. Examen of consciousness Examine of conscience The importance of self-examination in the context of eating disorder recovery Discernment as a way of seeing that eventually permeates our whole life. It is the journey from spiritual blindness (not seeing God anywhere or seeing him only where we expect to) to spiritual sight (finding God everywhere, especially where we least expect him) The idea that we cannot force discernment. When it is given it is always a gift. We can find ways to open ourselves to it. Being indifferent to anything but God's will The importance of love guiding our discernment process The quote I reference at the end of the episode: Discernment in its fullness takes a practiced heart, fine-tuned to hear the word of God and the single-mindedness to follow that word in love. It is truly a gift from God, but not one dropped from the skies fully formed. It is a gift cultivated by a prayerful life and the search for self-knowledge. - Ernest Larkin Join the Gratefully Nourished Facebook Community for support and encouragement. Side note - this is probably my favorite episode so far in this series! Welcome to the fifth episode of our podcast book club series on Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton. I'm joined by Kylie Mitchell, MPH, RD of ImmaEatThat to discuss Chapter 5: Honoring the Body. We're excited to talk through this book with you. In this episode, we talk about: How honoring the body is a spiritual discipline, just like prayer or bible reading The fact that our bodies have been made good, in the image of God The story in 1 Kings 19 where God gives Elijah rest and food before attending to anything else How we are embodied beings who experience God in and through our bodies How this practice helps us find our way between the excess of a culture that glorifies and objectifies our bodies and the excess of Christian culture that has often denigrated and ignored the body What it means to listen to our bodies The significance of the God of the universe taking on human bodily form (Jesus), dying and then resurrecting in a body What it practically looks like to shift from trying to be the smallest version of yourself to taking care of yourself/body Join the Gratefully Nourished Facebook Community for support and encouragement. We're excited to talk through this book with you. In this episode, we talk about: Longing for something more in our prayer life How the fundamental purpose of prayer is to deepen our intimacy with God The deeper invitation of intimacy in prayer to move beyond words with God How intimacy requires risk – God seeing you as you are, not as you want Him to see you as Discovering your breath prayer, which is an expression of our hearts deepest yearning coupled with the name for God that is most meaningful and intimate for us at this time Coming to the conclusion that all of life is prayer and the other disciples are other forms of praying And more! Welcome to the third episode of our podcast book club series on Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton. I'm joined by Kylie Mitchell, MPH, RD of ImmaEatThat to discuss Chapter 3: Scripture. We're excited to talk through this book with you. In this episode, we talk about: Honesty about feeling ambivalent to scripture at times Western culture's tendency to approach Scriptures like a textbook where we are the master and we can control the text God's desires for us to read scripture for relationship and revelation with Him The powerful experience of paying attention to our internal dynamics while reading rather than just reading scripture for information gathering The practice of Lectio Divina, which is a slower, more reflective reading of scripture that allows God to initiate with us and creates space for us to respond fully This episode also includes a guided Lectio Divina on Psalm 1. Alyssa Pike, RDN, LD and Kylie Mitchell, MPH, RDN, LD discuss chapter 7 from Jess Connolly's book Breaking Free from Body Shame. I loved this chapter. We explore just being with God and what that looks like in our lives, how God isn't in the business of rewarding spiritual righteousness with worldly success (aka a "perfect" body), and how we don't get worship and a "perfect" body - we just get the freedom gifted to us through worship. The "Your Story" Series In this week’s episode we are honored to hear from Kylie Mitchell, a non-diet dietitian over @immaeatthat who helps make eating and being in your body less complicated. In this episode we discuss one of the big misconceptions that we hear about intuitive eating and body acceptance, which is that intuitive eating means you can eat whatever you want and not care about your body. The reason why this myth pops up is because it seems to be the opposite of diet culture messaging, when really intuitive eating is all about self care, body attunement and the nuanced pieces of gentle nutrition and joyful movement. We define self-care as a whole body experience that includes honoring your physical, emotional, and mental needs. This means that sometimes your body wants veggies and sometimes it just wants ice cream, sometimes your body craves movement in a variety of ways, and sometimes it craves rest to heal and recuperate - and all are great options for self care. As you listen to Kylie’s story, and as you navigate healing your body, try to keep this reflection prompt in mind: how do I learn to take care of my body and listen to it so I can feel truly at home in it? Dinner time at our house used to be the most stressful hour of my day. I would call friends, complain, pull my hair out, and walk away feeling more exhausted and drained than the night before. My oldest daughter was what one might call a "picky" eater, and I was terrified she wasn't going to get the nutrition she needed. My anxiety led me to become a less-than-pleasant dinner partner without even realizing it. I heard things coming out of my mouth that I knew were unproductive and potentially harmful (ie encouraging my daughter to eat when she wasn't hungry), but I kept doing the same thing over and over again. Mealtime looks 180 degrees different today, thanks in large part to many of the principles that has led nearly 50K people to follow this episode's interviewee, Kylie Mitchell, as she leads the way to intuitive eating after recovering from an eating disorder. With two young children herself, she helps moms navigate mealtime and takes the stress out by providing us with some pretty cool information about why our kids are the way they are around food and we can be supportive, confident and less stressed at the dinner table. If you find yourself dreading dinnertime like I was, LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE! Kylie has so much great advice for adults and their children. For more of her insight and wisdom, visit her at immaeatthat.com.
Today I spoke with Kylie Mitchell, a fellow Houstonian, blogger, and practicing Registered Dietician specializing in eating disorders with a weight neutral approach. We talk about her journey through anorexia and its different manifestations through a disordered relationship with food as well as compulsive exercise habits. We discuss intuitive movement and how Intuitive Eating can really be a foundation for unleashing our intuition in all parts of our life. We also discuss her blog, and how she approaches food pictures now being on the outside of diet culture.

I'm still pinching myself at the thought of today's guest as I release our conversation 3 weeks later. Kylie Mitchell of immaeatthat spends her life shedding light on the darkness of disordered eating and she does it with tremendous grace and compassion. Regardless of your history with food,I know you'll adore all the wisdom she sheds in our conversation. We talk about how her career as a registered dietician started, the importance of accountability in disordered eating, her favorite and least favorite parts of carrying little raspberry (what they're calling their baby girl until she arrives)her husband Andrew, and how there's no such thing as a good or bad food. I left this conversation with so much hope for my own perspective on food, so I know you'll be equally heartened. Enjoy!!

I announced this week that my husband and I are expecting a tiny human. In this episode, I talk to you about some things I've learned about myself, intuitive eating, and trusting plus accepting my body over the past thirteen weeks. It's a LOT to process, this human-growing thing. In my post, and on this episode, I'm open about some body changes, mood and emotions, foods, and of course, my history with an eating disorder and amenorrhea. All the things! This is 100 percent my experience only and I'm sharing it because real talk is my jam. Please note this is just what I'm feeling, experiencing, and learning—not to speak for anyone else (pregnant or otherwise). Last but not least, some lovely women and resources mentioned: - Kylie Mitchell, @immaeatthat (guest on episodes #8 and #16) - Elizabeth Shaw, of BumpstoBaby.com (guest on episode #18 and a career spotlight) - Announcement: Real Life: About this tiny human If you have any questions about any of the above, please don't hesitate to reach out to the show's email address (which I mention in all intros) or through my site: heathercaplan.com.
Kylie Mitchell is baaaack! You may know her as ImmaEATthat, on instagram and through her Eating Disorder (ED) recovery blog (immaeatthat.com). We talk about her new pregnancy feels, body changes, and how that first trimester has felt for her. (She also has some thoughts on pregnancy books, and which ones may not be worth a read.) We answer a listener’s question, cover some news in the ED world, and Kylie gets real about why she originally started posting recipes to her blog. Bonus: Some well thought-out ideas on how to revamp the dietetic internship experience. It involves less Jell-o and more Netflix. BTW, have you taken the RD Real Talk Listener Survey? Kylie Mitchell is in the house! We talk all things related to eating disorders this week, because that's her specialty (and I'm learning). We answer our first listener question, which leads to a stomach-acid-jacuzzi visual. Sometimes "real" gets weird.
