On today's episode I'm joined by Jenny Stilwell, author of The 7 Percent Club. This book deciphers the reasons many businesses struggle to surpass the 2 million threshold, and that's what we're going to discuss today! Jenny's background is as diverse as it is fascinating. From her initial role in sales and marketing, she carved out a niche in the corporate world, later embarking on an entrepreneurial journey. She shares her experiences from running a marketing consultancy during a recession to stepping up as the CEO of a publicly listed company during the dot-com boom. She noticed that while there are plenty of resources that help businesses achieve 7 figures, there were very few to help them grow beyond that point. Seven figures is an incredible achievement but it then takes a whole new strategy, and different resources and skillsets, to grow to $2M and beyond. In fact, only 7% of Australian businesses reach this benchmark. So why exactly do businesses find it so hard to join the 7 percent club? Well, Jenny explains that while reaching a million might be achieved on a shoestring budget, scaling beyond that requires a different mindset. The inherent complexity that comes with growth necessitates a change in business operations, a point many entrepreneurs miss.Jenny also makes it clear that relentless growth isn't always desirable. She emphasises the significance of business serving as an enabler for a better life, rather than becoming a draining obsession. We discuss the importance of nurturing client relationships. It's essential to be able to understand clients' challenges and offer solutions that aren't strictly tied to current products or services. This episode is perfect for businesses aiming to reach the elusive 2 million mark and beyond. Jenny shares so much wisdom and will leave you with a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of business scaling. LINKS:My businesses:Good Axe  /  Ruby Assembly  /  mode.lawMy book:100 Days of BraveConnect with Jenny StilwellWebsite: jennystilwell.com.auBook: https://jennystilwell.com.au/the-7-percent-club/Connect with me:Instagram:@rubyassemblyWebsite:https://rubyassembly.com.au/https://little-mirrors.com/YouTube:Ruby Assembly

We take a deep dive into the process of opening a new business that has more overheads than any previous business that I've run before. We share why we decided to open a co-working space and the opportunities and risks involved in this venture. There were certain assumptions we made that served us, and others that didn't. We talk about what these looked like, particularly how we navigated financial uncertainty, difficulty finding investors and the challenges of finding the right site. Good Axe was born out of our own need for a high end workspace close to home. And, being community minded people, it was really important for our business to benefit our local community. We talk about the values that underpin Good Axe, why they are paramount to us and the future iterations of the business we envision down the track. I hope you enjoy this episode as we share the journey of building a baby business from scratch, from ideation, through all the challenges and assumptions to the doors officially opening. LINKS: goodaxe.com.au Sheree McIntyre CoWorking Counsel https://coworkingcounsel.com.au/ Simon D'Arcy Cucumber Offices https://www.cucumber.work/ Connect with Yule Guttenbeil: Website:https://mode.law/Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/p/CkxDEpmyYnY/Connect with me:Instagram:@rubyassemblyWebsite:https://rubyassembly.com.au/https://little-mirrors.com/YouTube:Ruby Assembly

This is, truly, a phoenix story. As many of you will know, when you consult with trusted advisors, they ask you to reflect on an exit plan for your business. But it's rare to hear a real story of what a business breakdown and resurrection looks like. Yule reflects on the fact that it often isn't planned for well enough or understood.A business breakdown can be traumatic. Yule's advice is to seek out trusted advisors. Your accountant, lawyer and your mental health professional are all essential. As Yule explains, It's often really hard to see the writing on the wall, so they'll help you understand where you are at, and what to do about it.Now that Yule is out the other side of it, mode.law is better for all of it and his positive experience of relaunching a business provides some really interesting learnings. On Writing A Book

This is my story of writing a book. I recently launched my first book, “100 days of Brave” and the thing I'd love you to take away from today's episode is what the reality of writing a book is like.Becoming an author isn't just a magical gift from heaven. It was always my goal to author a book. Research, literature and a love of the written word are my heartlands. So it wasn't a surprise that I ended up becoming a commercial writer. But being a commercial writer and being a published author are two very different things. In this episode, I unpack the process of writing a book and demystify several aspects of it. What I really want you to know is that writing a book isn't magic. It's training yourself to write, giving yourself the space to write, and investing in the resources to do it properly. I discuss how being an artist is work, and we need to create space in our lives to do that work. It's from the regularity and commitment to our work that larger pieces of contribution such as books are born. There is definitely an element of inspiration in writing a book, but it is also a focus on becoming an expert that gives you the authority to write meaningful work for others. And the biggest part of the work of having a published book is not really the writing. It's about finding a publisher that matches your values. This is the thing that took the most effort. So, I want you to know - you can do it. If you've got the story, please do write it.Visit 100daysofbrave.com to learn more about my brilliant book, check out our kickass playlist to power you through the three trimesters, the private Facebook group for support, and the really awesome playbook for download.LINKS: My new book: 100 Days of BraveNaNoWriMo - a nonprofit organization that provides tools, structure, community, and encouragement to help people find their voices and achieve creative goals.Major Street Publishing - the perfect home for me as an author Connect with me: Instagram:@rubyassemblyWebsite:https://rubyassembly.com.au/https://little-mirrors.com/

Filled with eclectic art, pink walls and body-positive messaging, Chelsea has created a space that is inclusive of all people and all backgrounds to be embraced for who they are... and walk out with some pretty fabulous nails too. In this episode, I speak to Chelsea about her journey as an entrepreneur and how Miss Jay's came to be. We talk about the values behind her business, why inclusivity is so fundamental and how she works to ensure her salon is a safe space for people of all gender and sexuality. We talk about how Chelsea maintains balance in her life by having a supportive network around her and making sure she books time out as prevention for stress rather than a cure. Having worked incredibly hard to build her business up from the ground, Chelsea is now in a position to start thinking about her personal goals and we talk a little about abundance, fighting the feeling of being greedy and placing a vote of confidence on yourself. We also talk about the practical side of business, finding the right employees that align with her values and why having trusted advisers around is so essential. My guest on the show today is Rochene Hawley, owner of not one, but three Melbourne based businesses in the fitness industry. It was my absolute pleasure to sit down with Rochene as we chatted about her triptic of successful businesses and her enthusiastic approach to life as a business owner, woman and mother. Rochene is the owner of Barbell Babes Brigade, Women In Strength and Women Who Lift and her mission is to build strength with women, in and out of the gym. In this episode, Rochene talks about her journey into strength training, the evolution of her businesses and the stimulation of having multiple things on the go. We talk about operating in flow and what that looks like for Rochene, that there's no map to success and how the etymology for passion has helped Rochene stay focussed on the long game and sit with negative emotions.  Rochene and I also talk about what it's like as a woman in a male dominated industry, the definition of success and the importance of being flexible to adapt as our lives and desires change. Rochene shares about her relationship with abundance and how things changed for her when she recognised that money was a vehicle.  This was quite the chat and we certainly cover a lot of bases in this one. It stood out to us both that no matter what industry you're in, the underlying matters we face as business owners really are the same.LINKS:Rochene's Instagrams:@barbellbabesbrigade @womeninstrength_ @womenwholiftapparel  Rochene's Websites:https://barbellbabesbrigade.com.au/https://www.womeninstrength.com.au/https://womenwholift.com.au/  Connect with me:Instagram:@rubyassemblyWebsite:https://rubyassembly.com.au/

Running a service-based business - like domestic cleaning - requires a SHED LOAD of moving pieces and variables. From the recruitment of cleaners through to office staff, training for best practice, ensuring you're insured to the eyeballs, assuaging the worries of customers and dealing with the whole 'being in other people's homes' thing - it's a lot. It's also what Edward Clayton of Maid to Clean does on the daily. I interviewed Ed during the height of Australian COVID-19 isolation, and we discussed the impact of pandemic on his business and the big pivots and reality-checks they had to take as an organisation. Ed's an interesting guy; while he runs Melbourne's leading cleaning business, it is business excellence itself that he's most concerned with.
