In this episode, we dive into Peter Jackson's gloriously gory cult classic Dead Alive, a wild blend of slapstick horror and over-the-top splatter. Join The Dale, Cea, and Twan as we explore how Dead Alive became a fan favorite and what it reveals about Jackson's early filmmaking style. killer Sumatran rats to lawnmower massacres, we discuss the film's outrageous practical effects and surprising emotional core.
Peter Jackson's outrageously gory 1992 splatter comedy "Dead Alive" surprised us all with its impressive 89% Rotten Tomatoes score. While we initially struggled through the slow-paced first twenty minutes, the film quickly transforms into a wild, blood-soaked roller coaster that had us simultaneously laughing and gagging."Dead Alive" follows timid Lionel, whose controlling mother gets bitten by a Sumatran rat monkey at the zoo, turning her into a rapidly decomposing zombie who infects everyone she encounters. What follows is perhaps the goriest film ever made, featuring memorable scenes like a kung-fu priest who "kicks ass for the Lord," a zombie baby that becomes a twisted comedy device, and the legendary lawnmower sequence that pumped fake blood at five gallons per second. We dive deep into what makes this film a cult classic, from its quotable one-liners ("Your mother ate my dog!" "Not all of it...") to its practical effects that still hold up remarkably well today. The film's excessive gore - using an estimated 300 liters of fake blood in the final scene alone - established it as the benchmark for splatter films and showcased Peter Jackson's creative vision long before his Lord of the Rings success.Despite some dated elements that don't quite hold up (particularly stereotypical characters and an unnecessarily slow opening), we all agreed "Dead Alive" deserves its place in horror history. Whether you're a fan of splatter films like "Reanimator" and "Evil Dead" or just curious to see where Peter Jackson began his film-making journey, this blood-drenched zombie comedy delivers a uniquely entertaining experience that's worth seeking out. Check out our full breakdown and discover why this New Zealand cult classic outperformed Batman Returns on its home turf back in 1992. Many particle accelerators that power huge experiments like the Large Hadron Collider at CERN are radio-frequency accelerators, but they are large and limited in how strong their magnetic fields can be. Welcome back to the 73rd episode of "Have You Herd About Animals?" and the episode is on RHINOOOOOOOOOOO'S. Rhinos are one of the Big Five animals popular in African safaris, but they also live in Asia and even lived in Europe in the past. There are currently five different species of rhino—two in Africa and three in Asia. All rhinos are famed for their horns. Some species have one horn, while others have two.Rhinoceros horn is made of keratin, the same material as human fingernails, and they grow continuously throughout a rhino's life. Like fingernails, rhinoceros horns can be trimmed without discomfort or pain.Despite two rhino species mentioning colours (black rhino and white rhino), all rhinos are grey. They range in size from 600-kilogram Sumatran rhinos to 3,500-kilogram white rhinos.Despite their large size, rhinos are herbivores—they only eat plant matter. They make up five of only nine remaining megaherbivore species left on Earth. Their exact diet depends on their habitat. For example, white rhinos have evolved square lips to graze on abundant grass, while black rhinos have developed pointed lips to pick leaves and plants.
I am so excited to talk to Amy Robbins, a self-declared “jack of all trades, master of none,” but honestly, an incredibly impressive person. Amy is the Deputy Curator of Mammals at Auckland Zoo and the founder of the Sumatran Ranger Project. She has been working with animals and finding innovative ways to help them for decades, and it is an honour to share her story with you. In this episode, she shares: How she got into the zoo industry Why modern zoos are important and how they are actually helping Her conservation efforts and work with communities The innovative habitat design for orangutans that Auckland Zoo has developed The Sumatran Ranger Project and how it is making a difference Why she is leading sustainable tourism and conservation adventures Her experiences and opinions on the palm oil industry The app you can use to track and control your palm oil consumption Key Quotes: "Whatever we do, consume, and use has an impact." "You have to work with these communities. And it can't be me as this white girl coming in saying you should do this. It's me being well-connected... But the people doing the work, the real conservation heroes, are those on the ground, working day in and day out." "We sit there and talk about these incredible animals that live in trees and how well they're adapted for life in the trees, and yet a lot of zoos still provide environments where orangutans have to live on the ground." Two decades ago, a group of Indonesian agricultural workers in the Sumatran uplands began occupying the agribusiness plantation near their homes. In the years since, members of this remarkable movement have reclaimed collective control of their land and cultivated diverse agricultural forests on it, repairing the damage done over nearly a century of abuse. Scott talks with environmental anthropologist David Gilbert to delve into the history and politics of Indonesia's landback movements. They discuss how grassroots agrarian workers organized to resist corporate and governmental land grabs under the authoritarian regime of Suharto and the New Order. They also get into the Cold War politics of the region, U.S. intervention in Indonesia and current political developments in Indonesia. Bio// David Gilbert is an environmental anthropologist with a special interest in social movements, ecological change, and post-development theory. There has been increasing public outrage at raw sewage discharges into our rivers and seas, but new research at Lake Windermere suggests that treated sewage is as much to blame. Wastewater experts Simon Evans and Ali Morse get into the nitty gritty of sewage treatment and why it might be causing so many problems. Last week, the Sumatran orangutan Rakus made headlines when he was spotted by researchers treating a wound with a medicinal plant. A first for a wild animal. But he's not the only animal to show self-medicating behaviour. Biologist and author of Wild Health, Cindy Engel, talks healing in the wild and what we can learn from the animals that do it. And it's that time of year again: the Eurovision Song Contest. In fact, this year marks the 50th Anniversary since ABBA won the 1974 contest with the iconic track Waterloo. Psychology and behavioural researcher Harry Witchel tells us what gives songs at Eurovision a winning edge and tries to predict a winner based on his criteria. WISDOM IS NOT a female deity who's been written out of Jewish and Christian theology over the last 3,000 years. This week, we study three more proverbs dealing with the value of wisdom and explain why “wisdom” has female pronouns in scripture. In short, it's because all nouns are gendered in Hebrew and “wisdom” happens to be a feminine noun. That does not make personified Wisdom a female entity, much less the consort or wife of God—especially when we read the New Testament carefully and see that Luke, Paul, and the author of Hebrews explicitly linked Wisdom to Jesus. In this 224th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this episode, we discuss animal behavior: the implications of an orangutan using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, and the one-off videos that we've all seen—of cats preventing toddlers from falling, of a beluga whale retrieving a woman's phone. What does this say about the minds of these other organisms, and about us? Also: dog domestication, from wolves, but not from foxes. And: the New York Times publishes more insipid garbage about vaccine injury, Bret returns to the question of what safety means, and The Nation turns its back on its muckraking roots.*****Our sponsors:Momentous: high-quality, science-backed, rigorously tested supplements. WHEN THE U.S. government does nearly anything with bipartisan support, you can bet there's a deep state agenda behind the scenes. We discuss H.R. 6090, the Antisemitism Awareness Act, which passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 320–91. 21 Republicans voted against it, but 133 Democrats crossed the aisle to support the bill which now is in the hands of the Senate. We support Israel and its people. Anyone who's followed us for any length of time knows that. In fact, by the time you hear this program we will likely be in Israel for the fourth time. But this bill, which purports to enforce a prohibition on “forms of discrimination rooted in antisemitism as vigorously as against all other forms of discrimination” is an unconstitutional infringement of our First Amendment right to speak freely. The House bill adopts a definition of antisemitism according to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance: Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities. Antisemitism, and all forms of discrimination based on race, color, or creed, is wrong. But that definition is so broad that it can and will be used to clamp down free speech. Examples of antisemitism given by the IHRA are ideas and policies we reject, but the Constitution guarantees the right of Americans to say things that others find repugnant or hateful. It should not be illegal to criticize Israel collectively or any individual Jewish person. If passed, this bill could be used as a legal hammer to punish anyone who does. In short, the bill isn't about protecting anyone, it's about control. But in 21st century America, banning “hate speech” trumps protecting free speech. A majority in the House of Representatives violated their oath of office by voting “aye” on H.R. 6090. The same is true of the so-called TikTok ban that passed Congress in April. It was justified as a way to protect Americans from Chinese surveillance, but what it actually does is give the president power to shut down any website he or she declares to be under foreign influence. As with the antisemitism bill, it's not about protection—it's about control. Sharon shares her takeaways from a new book by Annie Jacobsen titled Nuclear War: A Scenario. Jacobsen is a gifted writer who tackles some very important topics, and her latest is a sobering look at a plausible sequence of events triggered by a nuclear missile launch at the United States by North Korea. ANOTHER WARNING of the spiritual consequences of adultery is the theme of this week's study. As we noted last week, there are two layers to this fatherly warning against dallying with prostitutes or the wives of other men: On the one hand, it's a path to disgrace, ruin, and death; and on the other, ritual sex was common among the pagans around ancient Israel, and it was forbidden. So, the path to Sheol was not simply a metaphor, it was a warning of the ultimate end of those who reject this wise counsel. Thank you for making our Build Barn Better project a reality! PRO-HAMAS PROTESTS on college campuses around the United States this week began to evoke images of 1930s Germany. Students forming a human chain to force Jewish students off the Columbia University campus was eerily reminiscent of Brownshirts blocking access by Jewish students to the University of Vienna. The so-called “anti-fascists” are, in fact, what they claim to hate. Here's a link to video of Columbia student Khymani James saying “Zionists don't deserve to live.” Who's paying for the protesters' matching tents? It appears that the anti-Israel protests are backed by George Soros—but if you say so, you might be labeled anti-Semitic because Soros is nominally Jewish. On the West Coast, a pro-Hamas encampment at the University of Washington in Seattle was postponed because it was “too white.” Yes, factions of anti-Semitic students are squabbling over who gets credit for demonizing Jews. ONE OF THE MYSTERIES of ancient Mesopotamia are the strange, reptilian figurines found in southeastern Iraq near the ancient cities of Ur and Eridu. What can they possibly have to do with the Bible?Ancient aliens believers point to the figurines as evidence that the Anunnaki, the gods of ancient Sumer, were reptilian in appearance. They are closer to the truth—that is, the Bible—than they would like to admit. The ancient Near East, which is Mesopotamia plus the neighboring areas of Iran, Turkey, Arabia, and the Levant (Israel, Lebanon, and western Syria), was apparently ground zero for the practice of head-shaping—binding or wrapping an infant's skull to produce a head shaped like, well, a cone. According to the few brave scholars who have researched cranial deformation—which, as you can guess, has a high “woo” factor—it appears that from about 10,000 BC (roughly the time Göbekli Type was built) until about 4000 BC, everybody in the ancient Near East, because it doesn't appear to distinguish between social classes, had an artificially deformed skull. Before metal, writing, or the wheel, our Stone Age ancestors in what become the lands of the Bible turned themselves into coneheads. Why?The similarity between the ophidian (snake-like) figurines of ancient Sumer and the deformed human skulls of the ancient Near East is obvious. We note that there are verses in the Old Testament where the Hebrew words nachash (“serpent,” like the rebel in Eden) and saraph (singular form of seraphim) were used interchangeably—see, for example, the “fiery serpents” of Numbers 21:6 and 8.Were the Stone Age people of Mesopotamia trying to replicate the appearance of the “gods” who once walked the earth? And are these the locust-like creatures who emerge from the abyss in Revelation 9?Watch every episode of Unraveling Revelation at www.UnravelingRevelation.tv. WE RETURN to our regularly scheduled reading this week with proverbs that are paternal calls for wisdom--and a warning against communing with spirits of the dead. Contrary to some who seen in these chapters a female deity named Wisdom, perhaps even the consort of Yahweh, the mundane explanation is simply that the word chokhmah (“wisdom”) is a feminine noun. Grammatical gender has nothing to do with biological gender. So, attempts to see in Proverbs a feminine spirit named Wisdom are misguided—an example of eisegesis, reading a desired, predetermined meaning into the text, rather than exegesis, drawing the intended meaning from the text. We also dig deep into Proverbs 2:18: [F]or her house sinks down to death, and her paths to the departed; We find in the passage what may be a reference to the cult of the dead that surrounded the Israelites. First, the word translated “departed” is rephaim, the spirits of the Nephilim destroyed in the Flood. This is confirmed by the Greek Septuagint, translated about 200 years before the birth of Jesus, which translates rephaim as “giants.” Further, the Septuagint uses axonas for the word translated “paths,” where three verses earlier the words triboi and trochiai are rendered “paths.” The Brenton translation of the Septuagint renders Prov. 2:18 this way: For she has fixed her house near death, and guided her wheels near Hades with the giants. We explain why this is relevant: On the Golan Heights, ancient Bashan, there are literally hundreds of funerary monuments that feature concentric rings of stone around a central tumulus or cairn. The largest is Gilgal Refaim (“Wheel of Giants”), which we visited last March, but there are three others nearly as large that are practically unknown. Gilgal Refaim appears to have been built as a cult site for ritual circumambulation around a sacred central core in which a priest or shaman would descend to make contact with spirits of the netherworld. In short, Proverbs 2 appears to be a warning against participating in rites that were clearly still taking place in the time of Saul, David, and Solomon (see 1 Samuel 28, Saul's visit to the medium of En-dor). In fact, based on the writings of the prophets, communing with spirits of the netherworld continued in Israel for at least another three or four hundred years, down to the time of Jeremiah and the Babylonian captivity. THOSE IMMORTAL WORDS were spoken by Michael Kabuni, a political science lecturer at the University of Papua New Guinea, responding to a false claim by President Biden that his uncle had been eaten by cannibals after being shot down in WWII. Biden told the story twice Wednesday, in Scranton and then again in Pittsburgh. As it happens, his uncle, Ambrose J. Finnegan, was not a pilot and hadn't been shot down; the plane on which he was flying lost power in both engines and ditched in the ocean with only the flight engineer surviving the crash. Needless to say, the people of Papua New Guinea are not thrilled about being characterized as cannibals. We also discuss the tense situation in the Middle East. Since last week's program, Iran hit Israel with a wave of drones and cruise missiles, nearly all of which were intercepted. There was only one reported casualty, a 7-year-old Bedouin girl. In response, Israel on Friday reportedly destroyed the radar unit that protects Iran's Natanz nuclear plant. Then, Friday night, reports from Iraq indicate that somebody struck a base south of Baghdad used by Iran-backed Shia militias. Israel and the US have denied responsibility, but the Shias in Iraq blame Israel nonetheless. We discuss who may have attacked the Shias there and why. IRAN ATTACKED ISRAEL late last night, the first time the Islamic Republic has struck at Israel directly. The sight of missiles over the Temple Mount is startling, evoking images of the end times. We discuss the events of the last 24 hours and what may come in the days ahead, and we look at prophecies from Jeremiah and Zechariah about the role of Jerusalem and the Jewish people—no, God is not done with Israel yet—in the end times. The title of this week's study comes from the Septuagint translation of Zechariah 12:2, which reads in the ESV: Behold, I am about to make Jerusalem a cup of staggering to all the surrounding peoples. In other words, at some point in the future, Israel's neighbors will be so overcome with hatred that they will behave irrationally, as though they are drunk. What we have seen since October 7, 2023, is just prelude. Here is a link to the online books by 19th century author and clergyman H. THE MOOD IN ISRAEL is tense this weekend, as intelligence sources say Iran is preparing an imminent attack to retaliate for the recent airstrike against Iran's embassy in Damascus. Against this backdrop are Internet rumors about plans to sacrifice a red heifer to prepare for construction of the Third Temple. Some say it will happen on April 22, 2024. Unless Israel National News was wrong about the ages of the five red heifers delivered to Shiloh last July when we discussed it on this podcast (or unless someone was lying), the earliest one of them could be slaughtered, according to rabbinic tradition, is this coming September. Meanwhile, Iran seized a container ship owned by an Israeli in the Strait of Hormuz. This suggests that Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have been working with Israel to bypass Yemen's blockade of the Red Sea on the other side of Arabia. We also discuss the recent fascination with UFOs and “aliens.” Christians should be prepared to discuss the inhuman entities that have been visiting the planet for thousands of years. They're not extraterrestrial, they're extradimensionsal. We call them angels. Finally, we address Tucker Carlson's misinformed and antisemitic interview with Rev. Dr. Munther Isaac this week. Carlson has never been a friend of Israel, but he made his bias clear by giving a platform to an Arab pastor from Bethlehem who places more importance on his ethnicity than his Savior. A TERROR ATTACK at a rock concert in Moscow has left more than 140 people dead as of this recording. A branch of the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the deaths. The question is what happens next? It's been reported that the terrorists were arrested as they tried to escape into Ukraine. The government in Kyiv has denied any connection to the attack, but will Putin use this to justify escalating the conflict? What is ISIS-K, the Islamic State-Khorasan, and why did it attack Russia? The group, named after an old term for the region that included parts of Iran, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan, emerged in eastern Afghanistan in late 2014 with a reputation for extreme violence. It has been at war with the Taliban in Afghanistan, but has reportedly developed the ability to conduct operations in Europe and Asia. ISIS generally hates everyone who is not on board with its agenda of remaking the world according to its interpretation of the Quran, which is more or less the way it was practiced in the 7th century under Muhammad and his immediate successors. As Raymond Ibrahim reported earlier this month, ISIS issued a statement in January calling for beheading and burning every Western civilian, including Muslims who reject the Islamic State's violent jihad. ISIS even declared that Muslims must not support Hamas or the Palestinian Authority because their struggle is not for Shar'iah, but “for national legitimacy, and the kufr covenants of the United Nations.” We also speculate on territorial spirits who may be involved in this event. We know from the Book of Daniel that there is a prince of Greece—we think it's Zeus/Satan—and a prince of Persia. Is there a prince of Russia, and if so, who is it, and how does that help us understand yesterday's terror attack in Moscow? And we answer one of your questions submitted through our app: Who is Lilith? Thank you for making our Build Barn Better project a reality! If you received this month's San Diego Magazine, you already know about Warung RieRie. Happy Half Hour host and food critic Troy Johnson dubbed it “the star of the city's thrilling backyard restaurant scene.” Wait. There's a thrilling backyard restaurant scene in San Diego? Indeed, there is, and the individual restaurants are formally dubbed MEHKOs—Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations. We had Chef Rie Sims and her right hand—husband, sous chef, host, and marketing manager Dave Sims—in to talk about their Sumatran hut that they transported via Bali to their Serra Mesa backyard. In that hut is Warung RieRie, a fine dining restaurant operated out of their home kitchen. “For chefs like Rie, MEHKOs are a way in, or just a different way,” writes Johnson in this month's review. “Few people can afford to open a restaurant, which can run (at the very lowest end) tens of thousands to millions of dollars and lock dreamers into long-term leases. In 2013, California implemented the Homemade Food Act, allowing anyone to make and sell low-risk foods (granola, jam, the like) out of their homes. Hot meals were a no-go, deemed too dangerous.” “But on Jan. 1, 2019, AB 626 allowed cooks in California to run restaurants out of their homes, serving all but the most notorious get-sick foods (like oysters and tartare). The new restaurants were called MEHKOs.” With a year-long waitlist, Warung RieRie is undoubtedly the city's most famous backyard joint. We hear about the couple's movie-worthy love story, their journey from Bali to the US, Rie's former career as one of the most prominent film directors in Indonesia, and that time she cooked traditional Indonesian food for the Indonesian Prime Minister. As for news, we discuss LA-based Brewjeria Company opening in Chula Vista; Padres will re-debut their “Clara” beer at Petco Park; and Vega Caffe will open just next to the park, as well.
Pain don't hurt when you're hanging out with us here at Breakfast All Day. We have a quick midweek pop-in for you with a couple of reviews. First, an early look at "Late Night With the Devil," a brilliantly executed indie horror movie that takes place within the confines of a 1970s TV studio. Longtime "that guy" David Dastmalchian is tremendous in a rare leading role. We also look back at 1989's "Road House" to see how it holds up, now that the remake is coming out on Prime Video. Jake Gyllenhaal takes over the Patrick Swayze role, and we'll have a review later this week. Is the original "Road House" so bad it's good, or just plain bad? Let us know! And thanks for sharing some of your time with us. * Our friends at Coffee Bros. have a couple of great new roasts you're going to want to try: Their first single-origin Sumatran coffee since 2022 and a very special Futuro Espresso from Brazil. IT'S APPARENT why the Song of Solomon is not often preached in church. It is a beautiful and poetic description of the love and desire felt by a husband and wife, but the euphemisms that describe physical intimacy between Solomon can raise awkward questions from children in the congregation! But if you have been blessed with a loving marital relationship, you know. We also begin the proverbs of Solomon this week. Chapter 1 emphasizes the importance of wisdom, which begins with the fear of (or reverence toward) God. We also explain why the personification of Wisdom in Proverbs 1, and later in Proverbs 8, does not mean that there is a feminine aspect to the godhead, nor does it mean that God has a “wife.” Thank you for making our Build Barn Better project a reality! Great friends stopped by the latest episode of Breakfast All Day to help out when Alonso was feeling under the weather, and for that we're thankful. The always entertaining Kristian Harloff sits in on a review of "Kung Fu Panda 4," and tries to help Christy find some inner peace on this needless, noisy sequel. A NEW DOCUSERIES on Netflix had us thinking that somebody had been listening to 15-year-old episodes of P.I.D. Radio. That's not the case, of course. The Octopus Murders, a four-part series, is well researched and connected some dots that we hadn't put together back in 2009. However, it was a bit surreal seeing people whose names we'd become very familiar with, like Danny Casolaro, Michael Riconosciuto, John Philip Nichols, Robert Booth Nichols, Cheri Seymour, and others, on screen. If you're not familiar with “the Octopus,” we refer you to our episode from October 4, 2009, where we summarized the investigation and highly suspicious death of investigative journalist Danny Casolaro in 1991. Casolaro was found dead in a hotel room in Martinsburg, West Virginia with his wrists deeply slashed 10 to 12 times. It was ruled a suicide, despite the impossibility of slashing the second wrist when the tendons of the opposite hand have been severed. We also discuss this week's State of the Union address, undoubtedly the angriest SOTU message we've ever seen. For a president who claims to be optimistic, Joe Biden sure seems ticked. Also: If Israel isn't the “real Israel,” why is the god of Islam and his followers obsessed with destroying it? Thank you for making our Build Barn Better project a reality! THE SONG OF SOLOMON has layers of meaning. On the surface, it's a beautiful depiction of the intimate relationship between a husband and wife. At a deeper level, it's a picture of the mutual love between Christ and his church. We discuss the first five chapters and note the bride's description of herself as “very dark, but lovely,” which is not based on racial characteristics but implies one whose skin is darkened by the sun—a laborer, one of lower social status than her husband. Nonetheless, the husband, who may be Solomon, is clearly in love with his bride. Thank you for making our Build Barn Better project a reality! THE CORPORATE MEDIA and its deep state masters want you to believe that reality is what they tell you, not what you see with your lying eyes. President Biden's cognitive decline is apparent, but only a few in the media have dared break the wall of silence around that topic. This isn't the first time the media has concealed a president's physical limitations, but it was easier to convince the public that, say, Woodrow Wilson was still performing his duties after his debilitating stroke in an age without the Internet and social media. We're also supposed to believe that children are competent to demand and receive chemical sterilization and surgical mutilation, and in some states, such as Illinois, it may soon be considered child abuse for a parent to refuse to consent to such procedures for minor children. Overseas, we continue to hear that Ukraine is on the verge of defeating Russia if we just send another aid package worth tens of billions of dollars—while at the same time we're supposed to fear that the Russian military, which we're assured is on the verge of losing a war to its much smaller neighbor, will roll over all of Eastern Europe if we don't stop it now in Ukraine. At the end of the day, this is all about stoking fear and division. If we give in, we help fulfill the prophecy that nation will rise against nation—bearing in mind that the word translated “nation” is ethnos, from which we get “ethnic.” The world is being divided back into tribes in a supernatural plot to divide and conquer. Just remember Psalm 2: “He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.” Thank you for making our Build Barn Better project a reality! SOLOMON'S PRAYER for wisdom pleased God, who honored Solomon's wish and granted him more besides. 2 Chronicles picks up the story of Solomon from the beginning of his reign around 971 BC. At this time, the tabernacle of Moses was still at Gibeon, a city in the territory of Benjamin just north of Jerusalem, although the ark of the covenant was in Jerusalem. The wealth of Solomon is legendary. It's possible that the political situation in the eastern Mediterranean after the Bronze Age Collapse around 1200–1175 BC left a power vacuum that was filled by the kingdom of David and Solomon, but the hand of God was in all of the events. We detour briefly into the history of the era and how such seemingly unconnected events like the Trojan War (c. 1200 BC) may have created some of the political entities, like Kue (probably Mycenaean Greeks) mentioned in 2 Chr. 1:16, with which David and Solomon had dealings. We also discuss Psalm 72, a prayer for the new king, and note the interesting connection made by the Jewish scholars who translated the Septuagint between “oppression” and usury (Ps. 72:14), the practice of lending money with an unreasonably high rate of interest. It sounds like present day credit cards! Thank you for making our Build Barn Better project a reality! THE WORLD is a chaotic place: Wars, rumors of war, and a ruling class that is deliberately keeping the rest of us stirred up and angry at each other. Adding to the confusion was a major outage of AT&T's cellphone network Thursday and a cyberattack on a major health tech company that took North America's largest prescription processor offline—a reminder of just how much we depend on technology and electricity to keep us alive. Also: The strangely coincidental death of Russian dissident Alexei Navalny; Zelensky cancels presidential election in Ukraine; FCC to compel broadcasters to publish “scorecard” of DEI hires; and American students' poor math skills become a national security threat. At the end of the day, despite the chaos, we're citizens of a kingdom with a King who has foreseen all of this and has prepared a place for us. SOLOMON BEGAN his reign with a prayer for wisdom, a prayer that was answered by God in a dream. We discuss some of the interesting differences in the Septuagint and the Masoretic Hebrew text, which is the basis for our English language Old Testament translations. It appears the Masoretes made minor changes to make David and Solomon appear even more powerful and wise than in the older Hebrew text that was translated into the Greek Septuagint. We talk about a concept we've discussed before, “the Name.” This is a term used often in the Old Testament, but it's not well understood. Jews today use the phrase ha-shem (“the name”) to avoid saying Yahweh, but since YHWH appears some 7,000 times in the Old Testament, that clearly wasn't a problem for the Hebrew prophets. Nor is the Name of Yahweh His reputation; it's another aspect of the personhood of God, often described as dwelling with the Angel of Yahweh, who is Yahweh in human form. A more accurate translation of 2 Samuel 6:1–2, acknowledging the lack of a preposition (the word “by”) in the original Hebrew, the Ark of the Covenant is “is called the Name of Yahweh of hosts.” In short, “the Name” isn't a phrase, it's a Being. Here's a link to Dr. Michael Heiser's article, “The Name Theology of the Old Testament.” PLEASE NOTE that our audio sounds different this week because we took in a new rescue puppy Friday night! We recorded this week's study in our dining room with wireless mics because we don't trust little Glory around all the expensive lights just yet. 2024 IS BARELY six weeks old and it's already proving to be one for the history books. This week, Alexei Navalny, described as the leader of the political opposition to Vladimir Putin, suddenly died in prison. His death has been widely condemned in the West as another example of Putin's barbarity, with politicians on the left and right promising to hold the Russian president accountable. But what would Putin gain by turning Navalny into a martyr? It seems awfully coincidental that his death coincided with debate in the U.S. Congress over a $90 billion military aid package, two-thirds of which would go to Ukraine. Meanwhile, the deep state is making it clear that it doesn't think Joe Biden can beat Donald Trump in a rematch of the 2020 election. Not only is Biden's cognitive decline obvious to anyone with eyes to see, the corporate media's coverage is starting to acknowledge it—a sign that they're laying the groundwork for another candidate to step in. Whether it's Harris, Newsom, or Michelle Obama, we don't know, but we'd be surprised if Biden is the Democratic nominee in November. Just remember, while politics is important, it's not as important as the Great Commission. Stay focused on the priorities! Also: Avian flu continues to spread to mammals. We're keeping a close eye on the World Health Organization and what it will decide to designate the fulfillment of its “Disease X” prophecy. WE OFTEN WISH that God would show us the road we'll travel for the rest of our lives. That's not the sense of His promise in Psalm 119:105. The Hebrew word translated “lamp,” ner, is a small clay lamp with a single wick. In other words, it illuminates enough of the path to see that our next step or two is safe, but after that we have to trust that He's leading us where we need to go. The overall theme of Psalm 119 is that those who follow God's directions will ultimately be blessed, even though present circumstances may not be pleasant. President Joe Biden will not be charged for mishandling top secret documents stored in his garage from his time as a U.S. senator and vice president. However, the report by Special Counsel Robert Hur may be even worse for Biden than prosecution. Hur's report documents several instances of Biden's cognitive decline; for example, his inability to remember when he served as vice president or the year of his son Beau's death, an event the the president often cites in his public appearances. This comes days after Biden claimed to have spoken recently with the former leaders of France and Germany François Mitterand and Helmut Kohl, who died in 1996 and 2017, respectively. Making matters worse for the president, Biden gave a press conference after the special counsel's report was made public and confused Egypt with Mexico. The other big story this week was Tucker Carlson's interview with Russia's President Vladimir Putin. We neither condemn Carlson for the interview nor take as absolute truth anything that President Putin said. Also: Rockefellers blocking LNG exports, the strange claim that massive immigration will add $7 trillion to the US economy, and why we've agreed to speak at this fall's Nephilim Anthropology Conference. Here's the link Derek promised to his discussion with Dr. Judd Burton on the “hitchhiker effect,” large groups of migrants bringing their gods to a new place: https://www.vftb.net/?p=9041——————Our Build Barn Better project is nearly complete! PSALM 119 is sometimes called the Mount Everest of psalms. Not only is it long, its length is due to its unique construction: It's an extended alphabet acrostic divided into 22 stanzas, one for each of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Further, each of the eight verses in every stanza begins with that Hebrew letter. For example, the eight verses of the first stanza all begin with alef, the verses of the second stanza with bet, and so on. The overarching theme of the psalm is a contrast between following the ways of Yahweh and the way of wickedness, with elements of a lament as the author, possibly David, cries out for God's help in the face of persecution. THE U.S. MILITARY reportedly bombed 85 sites overnight linked to Iran-backed militias in Iraq and Syria. 34 militants were killed in the strikes carried out in retaliation for the attack on the US base in Jordan that left three American soldiers dead and another 40 injured. The attack reportedly destroyed the headquarters of the People's Mobilization Committee in Anbar province, a group actively involved in fighting a resurgent Islamic State. (And there are unconfirmed reports that the US is helping ISIS reestablish a presence in Iraq.) The question now is whether this leads to an escalation in violence in a region already on edge because of the Israel-Hamas war. Also: The IDF climbs Mount Hermon to watch over Syria; 13 BSL-4 labs in US work on deadly pathogens like Nipah and Ebola; new study finds artificial intelligence learns to avoid safety protocols and tells users, “I hate you”; and Arizona moves to Make Pluto Great Again.
