Today Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar discuss things that are not in the Bible along with verses that are often taken out of context. Ray shares that as a new Christian, he wanted to know what wasn't in the Bible. It's easy to see what is, but harder to identify what isn't. Many phrases sound biblical but aren't. One common phrase is “God helps those who help themselves.” In reality, Christianity is about relying on God, not self-reliance. People like this phrase because they crave self-discipline, but true faith means trusting in God's help, not our own efforts.Another phrase is “God won't give you more than you can handle.” In truth, God often allows overwhelming situations so we rely on Him. He isn't looking to harm us but to draw us closer. When we come to the end of ourselves, we find the beginning of Him. Oscar shares a personal experience of realizing his reliance on himself and learning to trust in God's strength. “Cleanliness is next to godliness” suggests outward cleanliness equates to righteousness. But morality alone isn't enough—we need the gospel. Many misquote “Money is the root of all evil.” The Bible actually says, “The love of money is the root of all evil.” Money itself isn't the problem; it's the trust people place in it. Wealth can be a snare, but true contentment comes from trusting Him, not accumulating wealth. “God wants me to be happy” is another misconception. The Bible prioritizes joy over happiness. Happiness depends on circumstances, but joy is rooted in Christ. God is more concerned with our holiness than our comfort. Jesus endured suffering, and if our ultimate pursuit is happiness, we will lose our way. “Name it and claim it” theology is challenged by the story of the paralytic, who was healed because of his friends' faith, not his own declaration. Similarly, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” is often misapplied. Paul's message wasn't that we can accomplish anything we desire, but that we can endure all situations through Christ. A verse commonly found on jewelry, spoken between Jacob and Laban, is often misunderstood. It was actually about distrust, not a general blessing. Likewise, “Judge not lest you be judged” is misinterpreted to mean Christians shouldn't judge at all. However, scripture later says to “judge rightly.” Finally, “God causes all things to work together for good” is often quoted without the full meaning. The rest of the verse explains that God works through our circumstances to make us more like Christ. Even hardships serve a purpose in shaping our faith.Send us a textThanks for listening! There have never been more products or trends to help with our hygiene - but are they all necessary? 

Do you believe cleanliness is next to godliness? You've heard it many times, haven't you? It sounds like it's straight out of the Bible, but it's not! I'm pointing out five things the Bible does not say and let me assure you that the Bible does not say: Cleanliness is next to godliness. Now of course it's good to be clean and to keep your environment clean. God doesn't approve of sloppiness or unsterile places or people. But to suggest you must be clean to be godly is certainly not true. Furthermore, to say because you are dirty, you can't be close to God or know God is never right. Don't you think sometimes we isolate ourselves from people we might consider “unclean,” whose standards of dress or way of life is below what we might call acceptable? Jesus never did that, you know. He associated with lowly people—poor and needy people. Many times in my visits to Africa, I visited very basic homes—mud huts, small shacks in the slums of Nairobi, simple dwellings with very few comforts. I found some of the most godly people I've met in those places. The widows I visited in the slums of Nairobi told me how thankful they were for their home and how blessed they were to have a safe place for their children. Not one of them complained about their tin roofs or mud floors. I have a friend in Kenya whose home is very simple with few furnishings. Her kitchen is a cooking pit with large pans for washing. She grows her own vegetables and milks her own cows. She is one of the hardest working women I know, and she loves Jesus. Her influence in that part of Kenya is amazing. Most of us would not call her home sufficiently clean or sterile, but her godly life is a testimony and encouragement to all who know her. You know, God doesn't care about your outer cleanliness nearly as much as your inner cleanliness. Remember what he said to the very clean religious Pharisees: Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. . .on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness (Matthew 23:25,28). Cleanliness is not next to godliness. Loving Jesus and living for him is what makes us godly.

Cleanliness, as both a physical and moral concept, has long been entwined with racialised discourses that reinforce systems of power and hierarchy. From colonial frameworks to modern social practices, the politics of cleanliness intersect with notions of race, class, and identity, perpetuating inequalities in subtle and overt ways. The historical roots, socio-political implications, and contemporary manifestations of the racialised politics of cleanliness highlight how these narratives continue to shape societal perceptions and lived experiences.

Caleb Drahosh Jesus came not to call the righteous, but sinners. The Pharisees and scribes relied on works of the law to be justified. The Pharisees demanded that Jesus' disciples fast, but Jesus challenges their attitudes. The Bridegroom had arrived; why mourn? Jesus Christ, the Righteous One, had arrived; why look for righteousness elsewhere? Self-righteous religion and Jesus simply don't mix.

He used their criticism of His disciples eating with unwashed hands as an example of their focus on tradition over truth and the danger of turning non-spiritual issues into spiritual issues.Weakness is a gift from God. Your weakness, your struggle, your pain, whatever it is, is there to help you understand that you need God. While cleaning isn't a spiritual issue, it is an amazing spiritual image, created to help us know God more through the way His creation works. It's a little late for everything other than tulips, but it's still worth getting bulbs in the ground or pots now rather than wasting them. Collect redundant bamboo canes and store them safely. Errant plant supports cause hundreds of accidents yearly, and the last thing anyone wants is to spend Christmas in A&E.During cold weather, put out high-energy food and ensure animals can access fresh water. Cleanliness is vital for the health of garden birds, so it's a good time to start cleaning out bird boxes in readiness for the spring.If it's grotty outside, or you haven't got the energy to move beyond the sofa, now's a great time to sort your seedbox, discarding any that are out of date (although they could still be worth trying) and making a note of new varieties you'd like to source. On fine, dry days, gather any remaining seed heads to provide decoration around the home or use them for making wreaths and garlands. Should it snow, shake the excess from trees and shrubs where the weight might cause branches to bend and break. Columnar (pillar-shaped) trees and topiary are particularly vulnerable. If you store tubers, fruit, and vegetables in a shed or garage, check them every fortnight to ensure there's no sign of mould, rot, or shrivelling. They should be firm to the touch with taught skin.If you planted potatoes in anticipation of fresh spuds at Christmas, you should be able to start lifting them now. Main crop potatoes still in the ground can be dug as needed, but don't forget they are there as they'll begin to sprout as soon as the weather warms up in spring.The wind is one of our greatest enemies. Firmly stake new trees and support or 'earth up' tall brassicas such as Brussels sprouts, kale and purple sprouting broccoli. Many of our greatest gardens put on spectacular light displays from now until early in the New Year. These events might not offer a complete escape from the madding crowd, but they highlight the magnificent structure of gardens we're used to seeing fully clothed.
