Audio Transcript After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said to fulfill the Scripture,"I thirst." A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on ahissy branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, "It is finished."He bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Over this past month, we've been examining God's Word tosee that the Son of God came to finish some things. And we've been trying to just answer one question. What is finished? Jesus made the declaration, "It is finished." Well, what is? Well, I guess to put itall in one word, salvation. The way of salvation, it's done. The work is done. And we've been spendingtime looking at different facets of salvation. First, we saw justification. The guilt is gone. You realize Jesus has taken your sin away. There are no grounds for punishment when you're in Christ. The guilt is gone. He's made you righteous. And then we saw reconciliation. The relationship isrestored. By nature, you are not God's friend. The Bible says by nature, we are enemies of God.And Jesus Christ came to restore the relationship with God. Pastor Taylor a couple of days agotalked about redemption. The price was paid. There was a literal price that was paid. You see, youhave sinned against God, and it wasn't as if God was like, "Oh, that's okay. Don't worry about it. I'mjust going to forget about it." No, no, no. As Pastor Taylor pointed out, you owe God an infinite debt. And God paid that Himself through the death of His Son. It is finished. You know, you think of those words on the cross, "It is finished." You know, that's not the only time that Jesus declares that something is finished. It's only the first time. Do you know the next time Jesus says it is finished? It is when God pours out judgment. Revelation 16-17, it's the last bold judgment. The book ofRevelation talks about there's seal trumpets and trumpet judgments and bold judgments. When thelast judgment of God is poured out, look at this, Revelation 16-17, the seventh angel poured outHis bowl into the air and a loud voice came out of the temple from the throne, saying, "It is done."That's the next time Jesus says it is finished. Today I want to talk about the last time He says it.Do you know the last time Jesus declares something is finished? As after He creates a new heaven and a new earth. Revelation chapter 21, I want you to turn there.Revelation chapter 21,Revelation chapter 21, look at verses 5 and 6. It says, "And He who was seated on the thronesaid, 'Behold, I am making all things new.'" Also, He said, "Write this down. For these wordsare trustworthy and true. And He said to me, 'It is done.'"Like, wait, wait, what is He talking about here? What is finished, the promiseof glorification? That is, the hope is real. The hope is real. We're going to talk about hope today.Because when we talk about hope, we use it in a different way than the Bible uses the word hope. When we say hope, what we mean is wish. You know what I mean? We say, "I hope it doesn't rain today."What are we saying? "I wish that it doesn't rain." Or we say, "I hope that the pirates win today."What are we saying? We're saying that our theology allows for miracles. But you see, that's not how the Bible uses the word hope.Biblically, church, listen, hope is the confident anticipation of receiving Jesus' promises.Biblically, hope, it's in the bag. It's happening. I'm just waiting for it to take place. But it'sgoing to happen. I'm not wondering if it's going to happen. I can't wait. I know it's going to.I'm just waiting for that to happen. That's biblical hope. That's the receipt that we hold on tothat says it's coming. I know that it's coming. And I can't wait for that day. That is biblical hope.See, that's what we're here to celebrate today.Actually, every Sunday we celebrate this. And actually, for the Christian, you celebrate this every day of your life. That Jesus Christ rose from the dead. We've been spending so much time talking about the fact that He died for our sins. Yes,that's true. But three days later, He rose from the dead to give us the promise of eternal life. And the Bible says that He went back to heaven. And you're like, "Well, what's He doing now? Doyou know what Jesus is doing right now? Like, right now, do you know what He's doing?"He told us in John chapter 14 what He would be doing. He says, "I go to prepare a place for you.Right now, Jesus Christ is building a place for His people in heaven."We're going to talk about heaven today, the place of our hope. Do you know what heaven's like?Sadly, there's so much confusion about heaven because people embrace ideas about heaven thatjust aren't in the Bible. I think for a lot of people, their ideas of heaven come more from aBugs Bunny cartoon than from what God actually said. There's just so much nonsense aboutthat people believe about heaven. It's just not true biblically. You know what number one is,by the way? The most nonsensical, wrong, false thing that people believe about heaven that's justabsolutely not true? Is that good people go to heaven. You have to be a good person to go toheaven. That's just bombarded onto us from society. Good people go to heaven. Good people...Well, that's not true. If that was true, heaven would be empty. We're going to talk more about thatin a bit. But no, you do not get to heaven by being a good person. But you know, even Christians, honestly, even Christians are clueless about heaven.Just grab your Christian, your average churchgoer, and say, "Well, what's heaven like?"You're going to get answers like, "Well, I'm thinking grandma's there."They're like, "Well, what are you doing heaven?" "Well, I guess you play a harp."And then you sit on clouds. And yeah, that's all I got. Like, well, maybe you've been gettingyour theology about heaven from Bugs Bunny or from a far-side cartoon. But I think many Christians aren't really excited about heaven because they don't know what theBible actually says about it. You know, we had a funeral last week for the oldest member of ourchurch. She was two weeks shy of 99. And she's having a good day. What a great celebration of her lifeand a celebration of the fulfillment of her faith. But I think a lot of people, even that we're sittingin that funeral, might not have been excited because they don't really know what she's experiencingin heaven. What is coming in the future in heaven? We need to educate ourselves, church.I mean, think about it this way. Imagine if I booked you a three-month vacation.Imagine that. If I booked you, I'm like, "You know what? You've been working hard. You know what?I'm going to get you the plane tickets. You know, you just bring your wife, jump at the airport, and get on the plane, three-month vacation on me." Would you want to know where you're going?Would you want to know what you'd be doing? What if you said, "Oh, thanks, Pastor Jeff. That wasreally nice of you. Where am I going? What am I doing? What if I said, "Don't worry about it. You'lllike it." No, I want to know where I'm going to be spending three months of my life. And I'm like,"Oh, it'll be nice. What am I going to be doing there? Fun stuff."Wouldn't you want more information of where you're going to be spending three months of your life?Okay, reminder, heaven is eternal. Wouldn't you like to know what it's going to be likefor eternity? If you do, you're in the right place this morning, because that is exactlywhat we're going to be seeing from God's Word. So on your outline, take some notes. The hope is real. The hope is real. The truth about heaven. The truth about heaven. Number one, write this down. Everything is new.Everything is new. Verses 1 and 2 in Revelation 21, "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." Stop there. New heaven and new earth. Why?Why do we need a new heaven and new earth? Well, because this is talking about what'shappening in the future. And at this point, the heaven and earth now, the one that you'resitting on right now, will be vaporized by God's glory according to 2 Peter 3, according to Revelation2011. He talks about this new Jerusalem. Like, what is new Jerusalem? What's the capital cityof the new heaven and the new earth? And John describes it as coming down from heaven onto thisnew earth. It's a fascinating study. You can really dig into it on your own. Just to give you a littleoverview. Verses 15 and 17 give us the dimensions. And by the way, these are literal measurements. The Bible is clear about that. But new Jerusalem is a massive city and it's shaped like a cube. And each wall is 1,380 miles long. And each wall is 216 feet thick. You're like,"Can you give me a frame of reference?" Yeah, absolutely, I can. If you were to take this newJerusalem and put it on our current earth, just drop it onto North America. If you were to dropit onto North America, it would go from Canada to the Gulf of America. It would go from the AtlanticOcean. I'm still trying to adjust to that. I'm sorry. It would go from the Atlantic Oceanto Colorado. That is the size of new Jerusalem. You're like, "Why do I need to know this? That is the place that Jesus is preparing for you right now."And this passage describes the final and eternal heaven. And over and over, he usesthe greatest word possible that he could use to describe anything. And it's the word "new."New. Look at verse 5. This is the best verse in the Bible. And I know somebody would say,"Well, actually, Pastor Jeff, it's all God's word." Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. But this is the bestverse in the Bible. It says, "And he who was seated on the throne said, 'Behold, I am making all thingsnew.'" Look, that is awesome. And we can relate to that, can't we? Because there's nothinglike getting new stuff, right? Don't we love new things? New shoes? A new car? New jeans?A new phone? I'm pleased to announce that Pastor Taylor finally upgraded from his iPhone 8.Yeah, a little bonus celebration today. But wasn't it so exciting getting that new phone, Pastor Taylor? You know what? I thought it was bad until Jane Auer showed me. He has, what do you have an SE?Yeah, take good care of that, Jay. We're going to put that in the museum. So we love getting new stuff, right? Getting a new computer. Men, get that new fishing rod. Ladies, get the new purse. How about a new puppy? Oh, that's the best. But there's nothing likegetting new stuff. And you know, the Bible says in heaven everything is always new.So a little tip for you. If you're in Christ and if you are, you will end up in heaven. I just wantto encourage you, if you're trying to make friends, to not walk up to somebody in heaven and say, hey, what's new? Because they're going to say, you are an ego because I don't know if you got thememo, but everything here is new. I had people say to me sometimes like, you know, heaven soundskind of boring. Like, what are you talking about? That is a clueless statement. Boring.Everything is always going to be new.And if that's not a beautiful enough description with that little word,he gives us a word picture that really drives it home. He says, it's preparedas a bride adorned for her husband. Like Jesus, what kind of care and attention are you puttinginto creating this new heaven and earth, this new Jerusalem? You know, what kind ofmeticulous care is going into preparing this new city? The Bible says it's like a bridepreparing herself for her husband. That's a word picture that really impacts me.Because I've been to a lot of weddings. It's part of my job. I've been to a lot of weddings. And you know something that I've never, ever, ever seen in a wedding is this. Like, it's wedding dayand you know, I come to the front of the chapel or the woods or the barn or whatever we're havingand like, and like, oh, they have them everywhere now, but like, I'm up there with the guys, right? And here comes the bridesmaids and they take their place. Oh, it's the big moment. The music shifts, right? And you know what's next. Here comes the bride, right? You know what I've never seen? It's the doors fling open and there's the bridein a college hoodie.Wearing sweatpants and crocs.Crocs will not be in heaven, by the way. Well, the Bible doesn't say. I'm justthinking it's a safe assumption, but I've never seen her where she's got a near-terminal case of bedhead.I've never seen that ever. Do you know what I have seen though? Every time.A breathtakingly beautiful bride. How did she get that way? She prepared. Do you know how much time and effort and energy and moneyand detail and it goes in? She puts everything into making herself as beautiful and perfect as she canfor her husband. And that is the kind of attention and care that Jesus is putting into preparing this placefor his people. Wrap your brain around that. But the Bible says in heaven, everything is new.Oh, it gets even better than that. Because number two, write this down, every day is in God's presence.Everything is new and every day is in God's presence. Look at verse three. Verse three. He says, "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is withman. He will dwell with them and they will be his people and God himself will be with them as theirGod.'" Every day is in God's presence.Don't you wish that you lived at the time that Jesus lived? Wouldn't it have just been absolutelyamazing to watch Jesus, like to sit down with Him, to hear Him teach, to watch Him heal,to watch Him feed the thousands with the little kids lunch? Wouldn't that have just been awesometo personally be in the presence of Jesus Christ?Well, I got good news for you. In heaven, you're going to get that, like every single day.Because according to verse three, we're always in God's presence. You see, that's good news, my friends, because I think if we're honest, sometimes God seems distantright now. I mean, He's not, right? He's not distant. But can we just be honest in church for a second and say sometimes it feels like He is?You know, we go through trials. We're hurting. Maybe you've been betrayed.Disappointed. You're just worn out. And you're like, "God, where are you?"Seems like I need you the most right now. You seem absent. Where are you?Well, never again will God seem distant. The Bible says He is going to tabernacle with His people. He is going to pitch a tentin unprecedented, perfect fellowship in the midst of His people. Every day of heavenis being in the presence of God. It's the truth about heaven. Everything's new.Every day is in God's presence. In number three, everything that hurts is gone.Everything that hurts is gone. Look at verse four."He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more. Neither shall there bemourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.No mourning, no crying and no pain." Do you know what that means? That means no a lot of other things. That means no depression. That means no cancer. That means no diabetes. That means no organ failure. That means no autism. That means no wheelchairs. That means no mental health problems. That means no dentist appointments.I see somebody rejoicing in the back greatly over that. But I get to tell you in the first service, there was a group of dentists sittingright about where the Zentcos are right now. I told them, "Look, we're going to be out of a job in heaven.Nobody's going to need to hear about Jesus from me. Nobody's going to need their teeth fixed by them."There's no more tears. There's no more death. There's no more goodbyes.Every bit of pain and heartache and discouragement. Never again. Never. Everything that hurts is gone.People ask, "Well, will I remember the failures of my life on earth?"Because I would think if I could remember my failures of my life on earth, that, boy, there'd be some tears over that in heaven. Will I remember the failures of this life?I don't know. But I do know this for a fact. That if you do remember the failures of this life, it's not going to bother you.Because there's no more mourning or pain. I'm sure about that. And you can get to this point, you're like, "Really?" Hang on a second. This sounds just a little too fantastic. Really? Well, look at verse 5 again."And he who was seated on the throne said, 'Behold, I am making all things new.'Also, he said, 'Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.'"Oh, everything is made new. Everything stays new. And you're like, "Is that really true?"Jesus says here, "Write this down. You write this down. You take this to the bank. You build your life on this, man. This is trustworthy and true."Listen, this isn't fantasy stuff. This isn't like fairy tale stuff that we say toplacate children when grandma passes away.Jesus says this is real. This is trustworthy and true."Every hurt is forever behind you." Everything that hurts is gone. Number four,oh, it gets even better. I know you don't think it can, but check this out.Number four, everything is yours. Everything is yours.Look at verse 6, "And he said to me, 'It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, to the thirsty. I will give from the spring of the water of lifewithout payments.'" Who are the thirsty? Who are the thirsty? I hope you are.Thirsty refers to people who realize their spiritual need and genuinely thirst for God.Heaven is for people who know they need Jesus Christ and they receive Jesus Christ and they loveJesus Christ. That's what he's talking about here. You see, water biblically is a symbol offulfillment. It's a symbol of satisfaction. "I was thirsty in a need. Now from the living water,I have been satisfied." That's what water is talking about. That's what the Bible is talkingabout when it talks about water. It's satisfaction. It's great news. That means heaven is not goingto be lacking anything that would add to your satisfaction. You know that? That means you'renot going to be walking around heaven and say, "You know what? This place is pretty good, butI have a few ideas that would make it a little better."You're going to be absolutely, totally, perfectly satisfied in heaven. And this, this is your heritage. Look at verse 7. He says, "The one who conquerswill have this heritage and I will be his God and he will be my Son."We talked about this with justification. We don't live in fear of God as judge. If you're in Christ, that is. You're not afraid of God as judge. You live in the freedom of God as Father. That He adopted us as His children. But being a child has implications for the future.Like what do you mean? What I mean is, if you're a child of God, you receive an inheritance.Look at Romans chapter 8 here.Romans 8 says, "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. And ifchildren, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with Himin order that we may also be glorified with Him."You see, Paul wrote this to the Romans and Roman adoption was very interesting. I was readingabout it this past week. Do you know in Roman culture adopted children actually received greaterhonor than naturally born children in the home? Like if a couple has natural children, it's like, well, you just came into the world the regular way. But if you adopted someone, it was, ah, you, though on the other hand, you were chosen to be a part of this family. But there's something elseinteresting about Roman children, including the adopted children, by the way, that they allreceived an equal share of the inheritance. You're like, good for the Romans. What does that haveto do with me? Here's what this has to do with you. Look at this. We are fellow heirs with Christ.Do you know what that means? I can tell some of you aren't very excited about that. So we're goingto walk through this together. You are fellow heirs with Christ. Do you know what that means? That means you will receive the same inheritance that Jesus receives. So what does Jesus own? Everything. So what do you stand to inherit? Everything.Everything. You're like, wait, wait, wait, wait, hang on a second there, Pastor Jeff. You was talking about the new heavens earlier. Do you mean I'm going to inherit the new heavens?Everything. And if you're like, oh, well, he's creating the new earth. Do you mean I'm going toinherit that new earth too? That's going to belong to me? Everything. And you're like, well, thatgiant city that you was talking about, am I going to inherit that too? Is that going to belong to me?Like, look, I'll do respect. What part of everything do you not understand? Everything will belong to you.But do you know the greatest thing that you're going to inherit? Is God Himself? Do you see that in verse 7? He says, "I will be His God." Oh, no, let's not gloss over thatbecause that's like the Levites in the Old Testament. Remember, Israel was told, you know, that they were going to receive an inheritance in the Promised Land. But you got like Deuteronomy 18-2.The Levites did not get an inheritance like the other tribes of Israel. They were toldthat God is their inheritance. And if you get God, you get everything. If you're a fellow heir with Christ, that means someday everything is yours. And finally, number five, truth about heaven, everything's new.Every day's in God's presence. Everything that hurts is gone and everything is yours. But we do have to say this because it's in the text. Everyone is not going. Now look, you know, it'd be real easy to come into Easter service and we're all wearing ourspiffy clothes and the music is fantastic and it would be so easy to get caught up in this passageand get excited about a heaven that some of you aren't going to see.Look at verse eight. John says, "But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable,as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur," which is the second death.See this list? These are people that love their sin more than they love Jesus. But I could ask you, are you on that list?Is there anything here that characterizes you?Understanding that murder means hateful and sexually immoral means lustfuland immoral. Are you there? You know the one that always sticks out to me in this list is the first one, cowardly. What does that mean? It's not saying, being afraid of stuff is a sin, like in the sense ofI'm afraid to go camping because I'm afraid of bears and snakes. And that's not what that's talking about at all. It's talking about being afraid to follow JesusChrist because there is a cost. And what will my friends think? And what am I going to have to giveup? And refusal to follow Christ, God says, "You're a coward." You mean He bought your way to heavenwith the blood of His Son? And you're too afraid to receive Him because of what your goofy friendsmight think. Because of what sinful thing you might have to give up. You're a coward. And that's not my opinion. That's God's opinion. Well, I guess it is mine if it's God's.But He said it.You think following Christ is easy? You think it's easy to trust God?Do you think it's easy to say no to sin? Do you think it's easy to say yes to serving Christwhen it's inconvenient or difficult or harder than we thought it was going to be?This ain't for cowards, okay? All of the items on this list characterize people who have never repented. They've never receivedChrist. And these are just evidences. He's saying that this is what they lived like. And I have to ask you, if you took an honest inward look at yourself, would you say that my life isgenerally characterized by a love for Jesus Christ? Or would you say my life is generallycharacterized by a love of my sin, myself, my way? Which one is it for you?Because if it's the latter, then none of these promises about heaven, none of this hope is for you.If I can have the worship team join us back up on the platform here.It is finished. It is finished. Someday, you're going to hear Jesus say those words again. For some of you, you're going to be horrified to hear him say it when he brings judgment. And for some of you, you will rejoice when you hear him say itbecause he's giving you everything, the hope of heaven. It is finished. Today, today, we hear those words from the cross. So if you have received Jesus Christ, your sin has been taken away. If you have received JesusChrist, he rose from the dead to give you eternal life. And if you have received Jesus Christ, you do not need to wait for heaven to rejoice in him. So let's stand and let's celebrate himfor who he is and all that he's done. Let's rejoice in the victory of Jesus Christ. Small Group DiscussionRead Romans 8:16-17, Revelation 21:1-8What was your big take-away from this passage / message? What are some wrong ideas about heaven that even many Christians believe? What is an aspect of heaven covered in Revelation 21 that was new or surprising to you? What does it mean that we are co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:16-17)? What exactly do we inherit?BreakoutPray for one another.

#207 Management Review – The Fallacy Of The Annual Event

The ISO Show

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 12, 2025 26:41

If you've ever implemented an ISO Standard, then the term Management Review will be familiar to you.  It's a mandatory part of the implementation process, and a crucial tool for monitoring continual improvement. Somewhere down the line, it's become a bit of a myth that a Management Review needs to be an annual meeting. That is simply not the case, while required by the Standard, it's very flexible on how this could be achieved. In this episode Ian discusses the purpose of Management Review, including what you should be including and getting out of the review and breaks down the fallacy of the annual event. You'll learn ·      What is the purpose of a Management Review? ·      What are the common misconceptions about Management Review? ·      How Management Review supports other clause requirements ·      What are the inputs for Management Review? ·      What are the outputs of a Management Review?   Resources ·      Isologyhub ·      How to conduct a Management Review   In this episode, we talk about: [02:05] Episode Summary – Ian discusses the real purpose of Management Review, and dispels the myth of the annual event. [02:35] What is the purpose of a Management Review?: Management Review is a requirement of all ISO Standards. It's main purpose is to check if your Management System is fit for purpose, and what needs to be updated to ensure it aligns with your businesses objectives and strategic direction. In short, it's there as a check to see what's working well and what's not working well, in addition to continual improvement considerations. [03:30] What are some common misconceptions about Management Review?: Some common misconceptions include:- ·      That it's simply a formality – Rubber-stamping things and missing out on the opportunity to effectively monitor management system progress ·      That It must be once a year ·      Having to review everything in excruciating detail i.e. all audit findings ·      The need to update the risk assessment and re-jigging scores ·      That you must review and update your SWOT/PESTLE ·      Or review and update all management system documentation ·      That it's the perfect opportunity to re-write a policy There is a time and place for all of these, and you could tackle some of this in a Management Review if you really want to, but that is not the main purpose of a Management Review. [04:50] How Management Review supports other clause requirements - Leadership: If we take ISO 9001 as an example, the Leadership clause states: “Top management shall demonstrate leadership and commitment with respect to the quality management system by: a) taking accountability for the effectiveness of the quality management system e) ensuring that the resources needed for the quality management system are available g) ensuring that the quality management system achieves its intended results” These requirements at first glance may seem like they'd require a lot of effort and monitoring of many different factors, but in actuality they can all be satisfied through effective Management Review. [05:55] What involvement is required from top management? As stated in ISO Standards:- “Top management shall review the organization's management system, at planned intervals, to ensure its continuing suitability, adequacy, effectiveness and alignment with the strategic direction of the organization.” Top management also have involvement in the following elements of implementing and maintaining a management system: ·      Context ·      IPs ·      Risks/Ops ·      Objectives ·      Policy ·      Support ·      Operation ·      Performance monitoring Management Review relates specifically to ‘performance monitoring', but that in of itself will include elements of all the other clauses within the Standard, and many of those require top managements involvement on some level. [07:45] The fallacy of the annual event – The Management Review clause specifically states that a Management Review should be ‘carried out at planned intervals'. Many had interpreted that as once a year, which has been the prevailing myth for decades. Looking at the Standard, no where does it say ‘once a year', planned intervals means it could be once a month, it could be once a week, it could be a set points during the summer. When deciding on these planned intervals, take into consideration the nature of your business, the size of your business, the risks associated with it and the maturity of your Management System. This will determine how frequent the Management Review should be, as it will differ for every business. [09:10] Examples of Management Review frequency – Ian has worked in an organisation where they had a rather grand Management Review process, where top management and other relevant individuals meet to review the past year and set the scene for the following year. That same organisation also had monthly meetings with the same members of top management to keep on top of new and on-going issues. That isn't to say this is the only way to run Management Review. Some opt to have quarterly meetings, others once every 6 months and some even leave it to once a year. [10:40] What is required of Management Review? Inputs – Clause 9.3 details the requirements of Management Reivew in most Standards (some swap 9.3 and 9.2 around, but the contents remains the same). First, the inputs required for Management Review include: The status of actions from previous management reviews - If you said you were going to do something before, how's that going? Changes in external and internal issues that are relevant to the quality management system - this doesn't mean that every meeting should consider the SWOT/PESTLE/IP tables, but there must be some determination of when that's done in detail and when a senior mgt discussion should include the key aspects of that and its impact. There is a need to review these things when required anyway, so doing it only at pre-defined times can be problematic. Information on the performance and effectiveness of the quality management system, including tends in:- ·      Customer satisfaction and feedback from relevant interested parties; ·      The extent to which objectives have been met; ·      Process performance and conformity of products and services; ·      Nonconformities and corrective actions; ·      Monitoring and measurement results; ·      Audit results; ·      The performance of external providers; ·      The adequacy of resources; ·      The effectiveness of actions taken to address risks and opportunities; ·      Opportunities for improvement. [20:45] What is required of Management Review? Outputs – You will also have a number of outputs from Management Review, including:- Opportunities for Improvement – This could be as a result or reviewing audit findings and discussing the OFI's found and how you can address and implement these. You could also use the Management Review to review and set new objectives for the year ahead. Any need for changes to the management system – You may need to review policies and procedures and see if they're still fit for purpose, if they're not then this is a good venue to discuss and update them. Other aspects that may have changed or will have a need to change include: ·      Interested parties – have their needs and expectations changed? ·      People – Do you need to change the people involved with certain processes? ·      Awareness – Do you need to raise more awareness around a specific topic? Resource needs – You may need to raise the need for more resourcing in regard to the management system or related processes. #185 Addressing Opportunities for Improvement

Continual Improvement is at the heart of every ISO Standard.  The cyclical nature of ISO Standards lends itself to regular review and update of your Management System, to ensure it's working efficiently and to address any issues or opportunities that inevitably crop up. However, Integrating these improvements can be challenging, even for mature systems. Today Ian Battersby explains the concept of Improvement as defined in ISO Standards, how to find root cause for non-conformities and integrating improvement actions from multiple sources.   You'll learn ·      What is meant by ‘Improvement' in ISO Standards? ·      Common misconceptions about Improvement in ISO Standards ·      How to address non-conformities in your Management System ·      Finding the root cause of a non-conformity ·      Integrating Improvement actions   Resources ·      Isologyhub   In this episode, we talk about: [00:30] Join the isologyhub – To get access to a suite of ISO related tools, training and templates. Simply head on over to isologyhub.com to either sign-up or book a demo. [02:05] Episode summary: Ian Battersby will be explaining what Improvement means in relation to ISO Standards, how to address non-conformities and integrating the required Improvement actions. [02:30] What is meant by ‘Improvement' in ISO Standards? – One of the requirements of all Management System standards is to determine and select opportunities for improvement (Clause 10). This is the fundamental aim of Management Systems: to make things better In the words of the standards, it is so that an organisation can: “Implement any necessary actions to meet customer requirements and enhance customer satisfaction These shall include: a) improving products and services to meet requirements as well as to address future needs and expectations; b) correcting, preventing or reducing undesired effects; c) improving the performance and effectiveness of the management system.” An organisation going through certification for the first time may never have had in place a system for planning improvements.  Some organisations are dealing with improvements, but not necessarily through a single, consistent route. While you can meet the requirements of the standards without a single route, the standard is not prescriptive in how you go about this. [04:45] Common misconceptions about non-conformities – the standard does go on to cover nonconformity and corrective action (10.2); is it suggesting these as the main source of non-conformities (NC).  It isn't really explicit about other sources, other than specifically including customer complaints as a form of NC. However, there's a strong argument for consolidating data from different sources, so it's worth considering how complaints data is handled. Other sources of non-conformities can include your Internal Audit findings, addressing where you may not be meeting client expectations, addressing failure to meet legal obligations ect. As a reminder, ISO 9000 (Fundamentals and vocabulary) includes the definition of nonconformity: non-fulfilment of a requirement: need or expectation that is stated, generally implied or obligatory i.e. Legal / client expectation. [10:00] Addressing non-conformities – You need to evaluate the need for action to eliminate the cause of the nonconformity, to ensure that the issues doesn't recur, or pop-up elsewhere. When a non-conformity does occur, you need to: ·      Determine the causes ·      Determining if similar nonconformities exist, or could potentially occur; Any corrective actions should be appropriate to the effects of the nonconformities encountered. So, you don't need to commit a huge amount of resource to minor issues. [11:40] Join the isologyhub and get access to limitless ISO resources – From as little as £99 a month, you can have unlimited access to hundreds of online training courses and achieve certification for completion of courses along the way, which will take you from learner to practitioner to leader in no time. Simply head on over to the isologyhub to sign-up or book a demo. [13:40] Finding the cause of non-conformities  – Without removing the cause, repetition may occur, and this is where integrating improvement data from multiple sources comes into its own. The idea of Common cause is - a single cause may manifest itself in very different outcomes. For example, a lack of competence could lead to a process being delivered wrongly, leading to reducing level of quality in service or product, which would be picked up as an NC. Competence is an area which can also lead to NC's, through the result of a helath & safety incident or environmental incident if people aren't trained to use equipment or follow set procedures.   It can also lead to a customer complaint where the failed process is apparent to a customer. If a product NC isn't spotted until after the product delivered/in service it could lead to a warranty claim Or even a claim for damages should it lead to harm/loss to the customer It could lead to regulatory breach or even enforcement or legal action Some of these outcomes may not be apparent until they have impacted upon a customer or other interested party, so would not be recorded internally through a nonconformity system. All this to say, finding the root cause will require looking in a lot of different places. Having a common methodology in place to address non-conformities, including considerations for different types of issues, makes life a lot easier. [15:55] Integrating Improvements from multiple sources: There are many sources which can highlight opportunities for Improvement, including: Internal Audit – This is a conformity assessment, so any gaps or issues identified will be NC's that need addressing. Surveillance Audit / Certification Audit – Your Certification Body will also be conducting a third-party conformity assessment, which may highlight something you've missed in your own internal audits. Supply Chain Audit – Auditing your supply chain can also highlight NC's that you can encourage them to address, both for your benefit and theirs. Client Audit – You may be audited by clients, especially where there may be specific technical industry related issues. Management Review – This is the perfect platform to identify Opportunities for Improvement. You can highlight NC trends from Internal Audits here and define if they need to be addressed separately. You will often have members of senior management present at a Management Review, so there is a greater chance for you to plan tangible actions to address issues, especially if they are business critical. SWOT / PESTLE – This usually happens early on in the Implementation phase, but there's no reason why you can't repeat the exercise on an annual basis. This exercise directly identifies your risks and opportunities, both from internal and external sources. Getting input from all levels of staff as they may also shed light on potential NC's and opportunities other departments may not even be aware of. Accident reporting / Safety observations – Any incident should be viewed as an opportunity to improve. Some accidents are unavoidable, but many are a result of someone not following instructions, equipment being left unattended or in the wrongs location ect. Addressing these will help you to ensure a safer environment. Site inspections – Just walking around your site can yield new insights. Ask other departments that may not visit your area to do a sweep and report any findings. Sometimes all you need is a fresh pair of eyes to highlight issues you've missed.   Complaint / Other customer feedback – Allow clients and stakeholders to have input. Regulatory requirements – You may discover you are breaching a regulation, which needs to be addressed ASAP. Consider a legal register to keep track of all your legal and regulatory requirements. Enforcement (HSE, EA, professional body) – You may have opportunities for improvement enforced by professional bodies such as the HSE or Environment Agency. Transcript: This is part seven of responding to your answer to my question of what your number one biggest songwriting struggle or challenge is. Let's talk about it. Hello friend, welcome to another episode of the Songwriter Theory Podcast. I'm your host as always, Joseph Galla. Honored that you would take some time out of your busy day, your busy week to talk songwriting with me. And welcome again to another bonus episode of the Songwriter Theory Podcast where we are talking about your answers to the question of what your biggest songwriting struggle is. If you haven't already, be sure to grab my free guide, 20 Different Ways to Start Writing a Song. This is a struggle that comes up. We might get to this question today actually, but somebody asks about, "Hey, I struggled figuring out where to start with songs." Not sure if we'll get to it in today's episode or not, but whether you're just somebody that sometimes wants to get out of your creative box a little bit more or you're somebody who struggles to actually start writing songs and not even just being original with starting songs but just starting in general, this is the guide for you to kick writer's block to the curb because writer's block sometimes comes from staring at a blank page, staring at your instrument and just being like, "I don't know. I don't know what to do next." But starting our songs in different ways can be a great way to overcome that, and this free cheat sheet gives you 20 different ways to start writing a song. SongwriterTheory.com slash free guide. First response for this bonus episode. Dear Joseph, songwriting is a very excellent form of literature and philosophy. I agree. As a result, I enjoy English literature such as short stories and memoirs. Songwriting is very special to me and my friends. The tricky part is the rhythm and rhyme. So let's address that first. So when it comes to...so with rhythm and rhyme, because you paired them together, I'm mostly going to assume that you're talking about the rhythm specifically of words and or the melody, aka meter. So the tricky part is meter and rhyme. First thing on that, because I've seen enough lyrics and had enough questions where I know that I think I need to say this, probably more often than I do, but your lyrics should not exist or not be made to serve an arbitrary rhyme scheme. Your lyrics do not serve a rhyme. Your rhyming or lack of rhyming should service and serve your lyrics. So you should never be, for instance, let's say you decide on a rhyme scheme that is A-B-A-B. You should never be significantly altering your lyrics or using corny words you don't really want to use. I'll pick on Night and Light. I've used it in one of my songs. There's nothing wrong with Night and Light. I've used it at some point, but you don't want that to be a constant go-to. If every single one of your songs has Night and Light, it's like, all right, come on. So if you've picked that as a rhyme scheme, A-B-A-B, and you're significantly changing what you actually want to say just in order to fit that arbitrary rhyme scheme, I think we've lost the plot when that happens. Because ultimately, nobody gives a rip whether your song rhymes or not. Just in general. I would argue in the scheme of all things lyrics, rhyme is towards the bottom of what's important. So to your tricky part is the rhythm and rhyme. Worry way more about rhythm, aka meter, than rhyme. Because to take it to the extreme, which is a good way to test any form of logic, but to take it to the extreme, if you had a song where every single, you did not rhyme at all, or a poem where you did not rhyme at all, not a single thing rhymes, not even family rhymes, or consonants rhymes, no rhymes at all, but you paid attention to meter, you could have a great lyric. You could have great lyrics. But if you reverse that and pay no attention at all to meter, your meter is just all over the place. But your rhyme scheme is perfect. Nobody will notice or care that your rhyme scheme is perfect because nobody will be able to see past or hear past the fact that your meter is all over the place. Now when I say meter is all over the place, I don't mean that you have some slight alterations in places. I don't mean that your syllable counts aren't exact, even though your emphases counts are exact so just for instance, take common meter, has four emphases three, four, three, which often comes with a syllable count of eight, six, eight, six, but doesn't have to. We talked about this in a previous podcast. I think the example I used was I have to go to school has the same meter as I have to go to the school. Now I tucked another word in there that's unemphasized to the school instead of to school, but that's the same meter because the emphases are still the same. They're on the same syllables, the same number of emphases. There's just one unemphasized syllable tucked in, which in the scheme of a song, totally fine, totally fine. It happens all the time. It's not imperfect. It's great. It can work marvelously, especially if it needs to be there. If your meter is all over the place, you might as well be speaking the way I am in basic prose where there's no real sense of meter at all, then your lyrics, they're not even lyrics. They're not even lyrics. I guess my first recommendation is don't pay attention to those two things equally. Get your meter right and if you can, use rhyme as a supplemental part to your lyrics where you make your lyrics even better because of rhyme, great. Because rhyme, I think should be viewed that way. Number one is say what you mean to say in your lyrics and get the meter right. And again, meter right does not mean exact with syllables and everything, but try to be as exact as possible with emphases or at least really close and you're good. And then for rhymes, to actually find rhymes, especially if you're looking for perfect rhymes, which would be like night and light where both the consonants and the assonance or the vowel sound and the consonant sound both match, rhymezone.com is a great way to go. If you're looking for lasso-vert rhyming, like family rhymes or things like that, I don't have a website recommendation that's going to just be on you. Although my recommendation is lean, for the most part, I would argue that ABAB rhyme scheme, especially if it's throughout a song, is too much. If maybe in the chorus of your song, one of the main points of your song, you have an ABAB rhyme scheme, great. The rest of your song, do like XA, XA at most because if there's too much perfect rhyming going on in a song, that's usually where it starts to get cringe and feel like everything is just serving the rhyme. So get the meter right. Worry less about rhyme. Moreover another problem is chaos, such as theorizing and being absent-minded. The challenge is that there are a lot of romantic lyrics and there's pain and sadness. However, rock and roll and blues are archaic. That's interesting. Rock and roll and blues are archaic. I don't think any musical genre is archaic and even if it is, you can bring it back. There's that new movement of like, Bardcore, which is like Bard style music. I don't even know what era that's from. 1500s, 1400s, 1200s, I don't know. Really old style music. Old European style music. But they do it for like, Down With The Sickness. It sounds like that. So any genre that gets archaic just comes back. So don't let that, I don't know if this is what you're saying, but don't ever let, "Oh, that genre's played out." Or, "That genre's heyday was 30 years ago." So bring it back. I mean, right now, seemingly half of pop music is just 80s round two. I mean, a lot of Dua Lipa stuff is like that. A lot of the weekend stuff is like that. We're getting towards the end of my pop knowledge here. But I've heard so many songs when I do have the, unfortunately I'm subjected to what is now pop radio. So much of it is, even, I like the 1975. They're a guilty pleasure of mine. And a lot of their songs are very 80s inspired. So anything that you think is archaic, it all comes back. You can breathe new life into something that maybe is actually archaic. But anyway, as a result, the time of day and such saliences as, wow saliences, big word, as country and folk music make poetry pretty. The melodies are always the fun part, but the saying is valid that genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration, for sure. Nevertheless, these forms from the 1980s forwards are very popular. Making money has been new investments. Moreover, I think new songwriters are cool. Yeah, okay. So I think that was the end of the question, implied question part. So Rhythm and Wrath. Yes, get the meter right, get the rhythm right. Mostly paying attention to emphasize syllables. Easy example again is forever. If you just listen to the word forever, you can hear which syllables are emphasized and which ones aren't. It's forever, not forever. It's hard to even say that. Or forever, it's forever. So the emphasized syllables, that middle one is the ee, ee, right? It's for, not emphasized, ee, emphasized, and ver, not emphasized. So just listen for the natural meter in your words and try to match that up. Just another tip on this. If you write melody first, that can help you worry a little bit less about coming up with an arbitrary meter or rhythm because it's already contained in your melody. Any melody has a meter built in because it has number of syllables in the form of number of notes. And yeah, sure, you can maybe stretch out a syllable or shrink a syllable. Yeah, you can do that. But generally speaking, the syllable count of your line and the melody note count of your line is going to match. And then there's natural emphases within your melody, right? There's a natural meter within your melody. So if you write melody first and then just write lyrics that match with the natural cadences, the natural emphases of the melody, then you're good and you don't have to worry about coming up with an arbitrary meter. As I mentioned in a previous episode, if you're really, if you're starting with lyrics and you're just looking for a place to start, common meter is a great place to start at least where you have four emphases, three emphases, four emphases, three emphases. If you want an example of that, Amazing Grace is a perfect example of exact common meter. Writing good verses. I never struggle with coming up with a chord progression, melody line, or rhythm for choruses. But writing good verses that stick in your head and make you experience something is a mystery to me. I always imagined verses to be more of the story writing section of the song containing some kind of message, but that mindset tends to leave me writing super generic verses that lack the feel I loved about the chorus. I struggle to connect choruses and verses. It's like I'm writing two songs that happen to be in the same key, but have very little momentum and flow connecting the two. I hope that makes some sense. So it sounds like this is mostly coming from a lyrical standpoint, given the emphasis on not knowing what to say and story writing section of the song. And first I'll say, not every song has a story. Sometimes I'll refer to this as like point in time songs. I think that's what I call it. But it's basically this idea that some songs don't really have a sense of time progressing. For every song that like Cats in the Cradle, which has a clear progression over really a man's entire adult life almost, right? From a kid all the way to his son, you know, him being very old and his son having kids of his own. Or 100 Years, which goes from 15 years old to 99 years old. For each one of those that has a very clear story time progression, there are other songs where the whole thing could be taking place in a moment. And it's just all the different feelings you're feeling in that specific moment. There's no clear progression of time. So it's not necessarily the case that it's a story in the sense that you or I may think about it, but very often it is. In which case, an easy way to... There's several easier ways to look at it. One is, one of the tried and true ways of doing things is to have present tense in the chorus and then have your first verse be the future and your second verse be the past. So you talk about the future you hope for or the future you dread or whatever it might be. Then you talk about here's where I am now in the chorus and then in the second verse you go back in time and say how did we get here? Or you can reverse past and future so it's actually an order past present future with first verse, chorus, second verse. Other things you can do is just see the chorus as something that's either a so or therefore or a but. So let's say your chorus will keep it really simple. Let's say your chorus is "I love you." The very main idea. Hopefully it's not just that you say "I love you." I mean I guess that could be okay. The basic premise is "I love you" is the thing being communicated in the chorus. So in your first verse and then second verse you might opt to make it so the chorus is a so or therefore. So in your first verse you could be like you know "You're so pretty and beautiful and you make me smile." So or therefore "I love you." That's the chorus. And then the second verse is "Wow you're such a great mom and you take such good care of our family and you're so kind." Whatever. "Therefore I love you." So have it be that each verse is something that supports the main idea of the melody. Where you could take the main premise of the melody and say "Therefore I love you." "Therefore I love you." First verse "Therefore I love you." Second verse or second idea "Therefore I love you." Or so. Same idea. Just less pretentious way of saying it I guess. And then you could also have "but." So you know we'll keep with "I love you." "You're awful to me and you left me for someone else but I love you anyway." You know and then the second verse is some other piece of evidence about how this person is awful and you probably shouldn't love them. "But I love you." That's another fairly easy way to go. And then for the, this might be nitpicking on something that you don't mean, but I always imagine verses to be more of the storywriting section of the song containing some kind of message. So I don't think, it depends what you mean by message, but generally speaking I feel like songs should, any form of message in art should be accidental via discovery. Meaning there's a difference between a theme and a message. A theme are ideas you're exploring. So a theme would be something like good and evil or love. A message is something that is more opinionated. So it's more like you know love is a lie would be a message or love is antiquated now or something silly like that. That would be a message, right? That's an opinion. The theme of love is not an opinion, it's just what we're talking about. So it's probably not what you mean by this, but just in case. I want to argue don't really think about what's the message of my song because that's where we quickly go from art to propaganda. And even if you think it's positive propaganda, it doesn't change those propaganda, right? We write a song specifically to get a certain message across, it's propaganda. And generally, if not always, I think that should be avoided. Again, your worldview is going to influence your songs. That's totally fine. But there's a difference between your worldview naturally influencing your art and you sitting down and being like I'm going to tell people X or I'm going to convince people of Y. Which at least now is sort of what message usually means. That's probably not what you mean. But yes, the verses probably should generally be the story portion of the song or the... You can think of it like if your chorus is the thesis, your verses are the pieces of supporting evidence. If you remember back in the day with essays or whatever, you may have had to write a paper where you have a thesis and then you needed three supporting pieces of evidence to support that thesis. You can think of that as your two verses and your bridge or something like that. So I struggle to connect choruses and verses. It's like I'm writing two songs that happen to be in the same key but have very little momentum and flow connecting the two. If you're talking about music, I think we already talked about that in a previous episode. I mean I guess we're recovering many things in some of these because we do have some of the same sort of stuff popping up which makes sense that people would have similar struggles. So I don't want to go too deep into that because I think we feel like I remember covering that for if anything too long in a previous episode. So that's something to think about and this is going to be in a YouTube video coming out pretty soon where I talk about how to finish songs chord progression wise. But something to think about is where, what's the last chord of say your verse or conversely what is the first chord of your chorus and then figure out the last chord of your verse based on the first chord of your chorus thinking about how well does one transition into the other. Because a lot of times I think people don't think about that they just think in wholesale chord progression so they're like one five six four and then they think oh so for my chorus I need another chord progression one six five four not really paying any mind to okay but does the four at the end of the first progression actually connect well into the one at the beginning of the next progression. The answer to that question is actually yes four to one is a great relatively powerful transition so that would be a good way to transition to a chorus generally but sometimes people don't think about that all I think that's worth thinking about. I'm struggling with understanding how to use the right chords to raise emotions slash feeling in the song or conversely to lower the feel not sure if that makes sense but I hope so. So I think I know what you mean by this and in which case I would say the right chords is just a part of what you're looking for. If you're talking about you have a verse and then you want the the pre-chorus to sound like it's sort of upping the ante and then from there you want the chorus to feel like it's upping the ante even more like there's a main point of the song. There's a lot that goes into that. I have specific videos on each of those things I believe. So right chords is always a difficult thing but just as a general answer to your question is it's not just in the chords. The chords are going to be a part of it but a lot of times how a song really feels like it's raising the emotion or feeling in a song is not just the chords it's in the arrangement. So for instance the pre-chorus may sound like it's upping the ante or raising the emotion as you word it not mostly because of the chords that are there but because the arrangement is changing. Maybe the arrangement is getting a little thicker that's when the bass comes in or some other instruments come in and it's elements of the arrangement that really help it pop up a little bit more. And so that's a very general answer but this is a difficult question because there is no one way anytime somebody says right chords it's always a struggle. There is no because sometimes people will be like oh just give me the right chords for the chorus. That doesn't exist. There is no is a creative thing right there are general guidelines for instance a great way to go is to avoid a one chord in a pre-chorus that way when you probably have the one chord in your chorus it makes it so that the pre-chorus is obviously not the chorus because you didn't have the one chord you didn't have that home center of gravity chord. So that's a really good way to make sure that your pre-chorus doesn't overshadow your chorus. So we have things like that but for the most part when it comes to right chords to raise emotions or feelings in the song that's not really a thing so much as it's very context dependent. Alright so if you have a three chord in the context of C major and E minor chord from a three chord going up to a four chord an F major chord it's probably going to sound like it's raising the emotion feeling partially because it's going up which by the way if there's an easy answer to this it's chords that go up or sound like they're going up which is going to be easier if you're a pianist because if you're going to be really specific when we say chords going up chords don't really go up or down because chords are just it depends on how you arrange it right so I can I can have an E major to an F major that actually goes down in pretty much every way even though E major to F major you would think is going up but anyway but going up is a great way to feel like you're sort of rising up and raising the ante and then you know going from minor to major will feel like rising whereas major to minor will feel like it's a little more deflating but those are super general right we're not even we're not even touching how inversions can affect this and how how every chord sounds is very much dependent on what came before it for instance when people talk about like oh major chords are happy and minor chords are sad by themselves that's probably true right if I just play this out of the blue that is sadder than than that which is E minor versus E major but depending on the context and and what chord came before it you can actually have major chords that sound really dark or really sad and you can have minor chords that sound happy depending on where it comes from especially when you get to borrowed chords and all that advanced stuff all to say that if there are some some things that we can glean from this for raising emotion going up and then you know thinking minor to major would be rising generally and then falling would be major to minor and and and going down super general that is not always going to be true you have to do it by ear and a part of it too is just doing it more and more so that you get a little bit more of a sense but I don't know that there's necessarily a science to it there's probably more of a science to the arranging side of how you raise emotion and feeling in a song or conversely lower the feel my biggest struggle is to come up with an idea of a song and how to begin to write it I keep hearing advice that I should write a couple of songs that would introduce me as a person as an artist my point of view my lifestyle etc also I'd like to write some happy joyful positive and energetic songs but all that comes to my mind is sad and depressing my main goal is to be a live performing artist and the songs that I wrote and write right at the moment are not the type that I would see myself performing live in a way that I cover that I perform cover songs so for my biggest struggle to come up with an idea for a song how to begin to write it first of all free guide again cheat sheet really now because it's shorter but has way more actually ideas of how to start a song songwritertheory.com slash free guide but to me I like to break it down into categories which is really you can start a song from a lyrical standpoint which is really anything that's based on words right whether it's a song title specifically and you reverse engineer a song from a song title or you just come up with a specific lyric or line that really resonates with you which sometimes is the same right there's a song that I I guess I'm writing technically I haven't finished the second verse yet or the second verse lyrics but it's called here until you leave and it came from the the idea for a line I'm here until you leave which struck me because it to me it well reflected that very specific feeling where you are in a relationship and you know that it ends one of two ways because you've decided that you want to be with this person forever but you know deep down that they're going to leave you so you know that the only way this relationship ends is with you being brokenhearted and them choosing to not love you anymore so the idea of I'm here until you leave it's sort of it's that right it's this idea that I'm not the one who's gonna leave it's you that's gonna leave because I'm here until you leave so that whole song which is probably my at this moment it might be my favorite song I've ever written even though it's not 100 written literally just came from the idea of that phrase and there's nothing revolutionary about that phrase either it just it just happened to strike me and from there I reverse engineered a song if you will or I ask more questions about like okay what's the story here what are the different symbols I'm going to use so so you can reverse engineer from a song title from a line idea that you like those two can end up being the same sometimes they're not you can have a compelling symbol that you want to use if you think of you know a specific symbolism that resonates with you preferably something that is a little more original than you know dark represents bad things but if you come up with a more specific symbol I don't know purple tiger like to you you think the representation of a purple tiger is something particular or white whale that's a great example right the white whale is actually something that already has symbolic meaning because ofI'm now like 20 000 leagues under the sea is that that one no that's that's the whatever the white whale mopi dick thank you I don't know who I'm saying thank you to I'm saying thank you to my own brain apparently for bailing me out from embarrassingly for getting mopi dick for a hot secondbut the white whale would be a reference to mopi dick right so the white whale is a symbol that white whale in general means nothing right but because of mopi dick the white whale has come to represent a lot so you can do the same thing with your own song right where whether it's a creature or anything else where you come up with a symbol idea and then imbue it with meaning because not symbols don't naturally have meaning you give them meaning and then ideas can start on the other side right musical this could be in the form of a baseline a killer bass line a really cool drum rhythm that you like a piano riff that resonates with you a guitar chord progression or a guitar finger picking pattern or pick picking pattern so there's so many different ways to start a song from a musical standpoint or from a lyrical standpoint and really you can end up doing both right you can come up with a bunch of lyric ideas by coming up with ideas from a lyrical standpoint and then come up with a bunch of music ideas and then mix and match them sort of mix not mix and match them but match them where you know you hear a piano riff you came up with and you're like oh that actually matches really well with this new lyric idea i have before i didn't know what that song was going to be about but now i have an idea of what it could be about because it actually matches really well with my song title here until you leave or whatever so that's that's there's so there's no one way to begin a song i would highly encourage you try a whole bunch of different ways grab the free guide try all of them and at least a couple of times and then from there you know maybe try to try to figure out what you think your bread and butter ways are which ways result in the best songs for you personally and then keep the other ones in your back pocket as ones to use once in a while to mix it up but i think having bread and butter is is a good a good thing i've said this a million times so i'll make it quick but you know for me bread and butter tends to be i start with the piano riff very often if not i tend to start with a bass line of sorts sometimes it's just a piano bass line so it's kind of starting with the piano riff still just in a different waythe best way for me to write catchy songs is actually starting with rhythm because i'm not somebody who can just sit at a piano and write something catchy almost always i'll do something that's a little more you know romantic sounding or emotional sounding sad uh so this also connects to the point that was it you that made no yes it is you that made this point right i'd like to write some happy joyful positive or energetic songs but all that comes to mind is sad and depressing uh finding ways in certain ways to write songs that can sometimes nudge you in different directions than you normally would go can be a great a great way to handle that so again for me i don't know if i would ever write a catchy song on the piano ever if it weren't for starting with drum patterns and drum loops it can be even really simple ones in fact the most simple drum patterns a basic funk beat or something or basic pop beat can be the best for inspiring you to write something that's catchy and more happy sounding perhaps but also uh to address i keep hearing advice that i should write a couple of songs that would introduce me as a person as an artist my point of view my lifestyle etc i don't know who's giving you that advice i don't know if that's bad advice but it kind of sounds like a business person giving an artist advice right it sounds like what a record label would tell an artist and i'm not saying there's no truth to it from a practical standpoint but i would say you need you don't know who you are as an artist yet because you're just starting so so the idea of your first songs introducing you as an artist is doesn't even really make sense because you don't know who you are as an artist yet you maybe have a decent idea you know generally but you know that and we constantly evolve as artists so i wouldn't worry about that is really what my answer to that is i would just write what's coming to mind which connects to with the i'd like to write some happy joyful but all that comes to mind is sad and depressing write what is coming to your mind right if you're inspired in a certain direction follow it when you're not inspired work anyway but if if all your inspiration is towards sad songs then lean into that write sad songs don't just arbitrarily be like oh i should write happy songs why why should you write happy songs especially if you if that's not the way you're naturally leaning and that's not to say that there wouldn't be value if you've written 10 songs and all of them are sad to say okay now i'm gonna try to force myself to write a happy song just so i can expand myself as an artist that's fair enough but if you've written basically no songs or very few songs which reading between the lines sounds like maybe is the case very few um which maybe i'm wrong but it sounds like very few in that case don't don't worry about any of that just write what is most inspiring to you right now lean into that and probably ignore the that and i don't even know what some of this means introduce you as a person as an artist my point of view my lifestyle nobody cares about any of those things except artists right like your songs introducing you as a person uh like does that is that something people are looking for like when i listen and i care deeply about lyrics i've never listened to lyrics in my life and thought i want to know this you know i i want to get to know this artist as a person no i want to know who they are as an artist i don't really care who they are as a person within reason you know there are some artists that are pretty terrible people one of whom is in jail for uh yeah r kelly type people rightso i i guess i care a little bit but for the most part you know i care who somebody is as an artist i don't know who cares who an artist is as a person or their point of view or lifestyle lifestyle is the maybe the most intriguing of those four because nobody nobody cares like you know nobody cares what your lifestyle is uh nobody cares what my lifestyle is in fact you might be somebody who's been listening to this podcast for a long time and you've never once thought what is joseph's lifestyle i don't even know what that means really but like what is joseph's lifestyle nobody cares right now nobody listening to this podcast right now watching this video gives half of a rip what joseph's lifestyle is you don't right and you might say it's not the same because you follow me for information is but i don't know just to me right right what is coming to you and don't worry about forcing it in all these different directions um and and be careful whose advice you listen to myself included uh just because i don't know i i'm trying to round my mind around who on earth or what kind of artist would tell another artist to write songs that introduce you as a person your point of view which is maybe one of the more legitimate ones next to artists and lifestyle lifestyle like that i don't need it nobody cares nobody cares and again this is not an insult to you right nobody cares about my lifestyle i don't care about any of my artists favorite artists lifestyle don't care at all i care about their artistic identity that is it right what kind of songs do they write what subject material do they cover things like that that's what i care about don't give a crap about the restin fact if anything if they shove any of the other things in my face like for example i feel like any pop artist that i get to know at all i like them even less than i did before right like i i don't know but i kind of get a kick out of dua lipa total total uh you know i don't pretend like it's great music at all uh but for whatever reason some dua lipa songs just do it for me uh but i bet and i've seen little clips but i bet if i watch interviews of her i would like her less and less and less and soon i would be like i don't want to listen to dua lipa soyeah it's kind of like actors right the more that not all actors but a lot of actors the more they're interviewed and they talk the more people are like you know what i mean like like brie larson is maybe the perfect example of this i don't know if there's any human being who has seen her in any interview in the last like five years who has thought this this person is incredibly unlikable i mean she's so unlikable that her co-stars can't even pretend to like her when they're promoting a movie with her like they're obviously annoyed and you can tell why too because she's like condescending to her more popular than her co-stars in an interview like wildly unlikable so anyway that long rant just to sayi'm sure you're way more likable than brie larson i'm sure literally every person who's ever listened to anything i've ever done is probably more likable than brie larson butdon't you know nobody cares about your your lifestyle or any of that just concentrate on making art concentrate on that worry less about the other stuff all right that's been so long than that one we're gonna cut this episode off here we'll be back for part eight to cover more of these songwriting struggles thank you so much for listening remember again if you haven't already grab my free guide 20 different ways to start writing a song song writer For the past 19 years, he's written a snowsports column from Thanksgiving to April. For the past three years, he's joined me on The Storm Skiing Podcast to discuss that column, but also to talk all things New England skiing (and beyond). You should follow Shaun on social media to stay locked into his work:Why I interviewed himLast month, I clicked open a SNOWBOARDER email newsletter and found this headline slotted under “trending news”:Yikes, I thought. Not again. I clicked through to the story. In full:Tensions simmered as disgruntled Stevens Pass skiers, clutching their "Epic Passes," rallied against Vail Resorts' alleged mismanagement. The discontent echoed through an impassioned petition, articulating a litany of grievances: excessive lift lines, scant open terrain, inadequate staffing, and woeful parking, painting a dismal portrait of a beloved winter haven.Fueled by a sense of betrayal, the signatories lamented a dearth of ski-ready slopes despite ample snowfall, bemoaning Vail Resorts' purported disregard for both patrons and employees. Their frustration soared at the stark contrast to neighboring ski areas, thriving under similar conditions. The petition's fervor escalated, challenging the ethics of selling passes without delivering promised services, highlighting derisory wages juxtaposed against corporate profiteering. The collective call-to-action demanded reparation, invoking consumer protection laws and even prodding the involvement of the Attorney General and the U.S. Forest Service.Yet, amidst their resolve, a poignant melancholy pervaded—the desire to relish the slopes overshadowed by a battle for justice. The signatories yearned for equitable winter joys, dreaming of swift resolutions and an end to the clash with corporate giants, vowing to safeguard the legacy of snow sports for generations to come.As the petition gathered momentum, a snowstorm of change loomed on the horizon, promising either reconciliation or a paradigm shift in the realm of winter recreation. The “impassioned petition” in question is dated Dec. 28, 2021. In the nearly two intervening years, Vail Resorts has fired Stevens Pass' GM, brought in a highly respected local (Tom Fortune) who had spent decades at the ski area to stabilize things (Fortune and I discussed this at length on the podcast), and installed a new, young GM (Ellen Galbraith), with deep roots in the area (I also hosted Galbraith on the podcast). Last ski season (2022-23), was a smooth one at Stevens Pass. And while Skier Mob is never truly happy with anything, the petition in question flared, faded, and went into hibernation approximately 18 months before Snowboarder got around to this story. Yes, there were issues at Stevens Pass. Vail fixed them. The end.The above-cited story is also overwritten, under-contextualized, and borderline slanderous. “Derisory wages?” Vail has since raised its minimum wage to $20 an hour. To stand there and aim a scanny-beepy thing at skiers as they approach the lift queue. Sounds like hell on earth.Perhaps I missed the joke here, and this is some sort of snowy Onion. I do hate to call out other writers. But this is a particularly lazy exhibit of the core problem with modern snowsports writing: most of it is not very good. The non-ski media will humor us with the occasional piece, but these tend to be dumbed down for a general audience. The legacy ski media as a functioning editorial entity no longer exists. There are just a few holdouts, at newspapers across the country, telling the local story of skiing as best they can.And in New England, one of the best doing his best to produce respectable snowsports writing is Shaun Sutner. What we talked aboutNew England resort-hopping; how to set and meet a season ski-days goal; Brobots hate safety bars; the demise and resurgence of Black Mountain, New Hampshire; why Magic Mountain works; what it means that Ski Ward was the first ski area in America to open for the 2023-24 ski season; the Uphill New England pass; why Vail and Alterra still offer free uphill access at all their New England ski areas; how to not be an uphill A-hole; the No Boundaries Pass; which passes New England's remaining big independent ski areas could join; the proposed Stowe-Smuggs gondola connection; when development benefits the environment; could Vail buy Smuggs?; the Little Cottonwood Canyon gondola; finally replacing the Attitash triple; Vail's New England lift-building surge; Boyne goes bonkers in New England; the new Barker lift at Sunday River; the West Mountain expansion at Sugarloaf; the South Peak expansion at Loon; New England's chairlift renaissance; Black Quad at Magic; a Cannon tram upgrade; Berkshire East's first high-speed lift; Wachusett lift upgrades; and Quebec's secret snow pocket. Why I thought that now was a good time for this interviewSutner and I have this conversation every Thanksgiving week, which is when his column launches. I think I need to start scheduling it earlier, because I haven't been able to turn this around so fast the past two seasons. Here are excerpts and links to his first few columns of the 2023-24 ski season:Nov. 23Snow sports: Ski resort lift upgrades should boost industry in New EnglandThe most despised lift in New England ski country is no more. The ponderously slow, sometimes treacherous summit triple chair at Attitash that has long been a staple of hardcore Massachusetts skiers and snowboarders, is gone."No one ever thought this was ever going to really happen," Brandon Swartz, general manager of the Mount Washington Valley classic ski area in Bartlett, New Hampshire, told me. "I just couldn't be more excited to help build the lift that no one ever thought was going to get built."Whether the old summit lift's swift new replacement, the high-speed detachable Mountaineer quad, will be ready for Christmas week as Colorado-based owner Vail Resorts expects, is yet to be seen as Attitash is still furiously working on it in the eighth month of the project. But it's the most welcome ski-lift replacement in our region in decades, I think, finally providing convenient access to the passel of glorious snaking steep and challenging intermediate runs from the top in half the 16-18-minute ride time of the old 1986 triple. Read more…Nov. 29'It was shocking and beautiful': Trip to Argentina, Antarctica memorable for Lunenburg's RiddleThis wasn't Riddle's first time tackling demanding backcountry terrain in forbidding terrain, nor is this the first time I've written about him, having chronicled his previous trips to Chamonix in the French Alps and Norway. Riddle is the guy who got me into alpine touring – the Alpine-Nordic hybrid that involves hiking up mountains on skis with climbing skins affixed to the bases and then removing the skins and locking down the boot heels for the descent – seven or eight years ago. He's also won the Wachusett Mountain pond skim contest three times, leading to word on the street that he's been banned from taking that coveted title ever again. But this adventure was of a bigger order of magnitude than his previous ventures into big mountains. Read more…Dec. 6New BOA ski boot hopes its unique fit will provide a leg up on competitionNo, it's not named after a boa constrictor, though it does wrap around your foot kind of like a snake.BOA stands for "boot opening adjustment" and it's the trademarked brand name of the company that has made the lace and wire and dial adjust-based closure systems since 2001 and adapted them to snowboard and race bike boots, Nordic gear, ice and in-line skates and other applications,Now BOA has brought the system to Alpine ski boots. Oversized protruding knobs and an intricate wire system go over the forefoot instead of buckles and wrap the instep and can make micro-adjustments in either direction – tighter or looser. Proponents say they just fit better, while skeptics point out they're a bit heavier and their durability still hasn't been proven on a wide scale yet for the Alpine version. Read more…His column lands every Wednesday through spring. What I got wrongAbout Magic Mountain, VermontI said that Magic was out of business for “five years.” The best info I can find (on New England Ski History), suggests that the ski area closed following the 1990-91 season, and didn't re-open until December 1997, which would put the closure at closer to six-and-a-half years.About the Indy PassI referred to Erik Mogensen as the “Indy Pass founder.” He is the pass' current owner, but Doug Fish, who has joined me on the podcast many times, founded the product.About SaddlebackI didn't hear Sutner correctly when he asked if Saddleback was “a B corporation,” which is a business that “is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials.” I thought he'd asked if they were owned by a larger corporation, and my answer reflects that understanding (but does not answer his question), as I go into the history of Arctaris Impact Fund's purchase of Saddleback. The only ski area that has achieved B Corporation certification, as far as I know, is Taos.About words being hardI described Vail and Alterra as “big, corporate conglomerations.” Which, I'm sorry.About there being too many things in this world to keep track ofI forgot the name of Spruce Peak at Stowe when describing the ski area's connection point with Smugglers' Notch. Which is funny because I've written about it extensively over the past several months, skied there many times, and in general try to remember the important components of prominent ski areas.About my personal calendarI said that I skied at Big Sky “last year.” I meant “last season,” as I actually was there in April 2023.On time being fungibleI said that Magic's Black Quad has been sitting in the ski area's parking lot for “about four years.” This is inaccurate for a couple different reasons. First, the lift – Stratton's old Snow Bowl lift – came out in 2018 (so more than five years ago). I don't know when Magic took delivery of the lift. At any rate, installation began several years ago, so it's not accurate to say that the lift has been “sitting in the parking lot.” What I meant was that it's taken Magic a hell of a long time to get this machine live, which no one can dispute.Podcast NotesOn motorcycle helmet lawsWe briefly discuss the almost universal shift to wearing helmets while skiing in the context of motorcycle helmet laws, which are not as ubiquitous as you'd suppose. Only 18 states require all riders to wear helmets at all times. The remainder set an age limit – typically 18 or 21. Three states – Iowa, Illinois, and New Hampshire – have no helmet law at all.On non-profit ski areasErik Mogensen, owner of Entabeni Systems and Indy Pass, is leading the coalition to find a new owner for Black Mountain, New Hampshire. He's said many times that around a quarter of America's ski areas need “another ownership solution.” He expanded on this in SAM a few weeks back:I think about 25 percent of the non-corporate ski areas in North America need another ownership solution. That doesn't necessarily mean that it needs to be nonprofit. There are a lot of liabilities in having a group of volunteers or board of directors try to run a ski area from a nonprofit status. I'm definitely a capitalist, and there can be issues with nonprofits that I don't think we've solved yet in skiing. If we look at the nonprofits that have run very well, Bridger Bowl and Bogus Basin particularly, they focused around running the ski area as a for-profit business with a nonprofit backend, if you will.I've also seen a lot of ski areas struggle with trying to run the nonprofit model. So I don't necessarily believe that a nonprofit model is something that we should copy and paste. But I do believe it's a front runner that needs to be adjusted and adopted. And we do need a solution for the 25 percent. It's very hard to make some of areas commercially viable on their own.On the “unfriendly” lift attendants at Ski WardI recently gave Ski Ward some positive run, highlighting the fact that they were the first ski area to open in America in 2023. It was a cool story and they deserved the attention. However, I have a conflicted history with this place, as Sutner and I joked on the podcast. I had one of my worst ski experiences ever there, mostly because the lift attendants – at least on the day of my visit – were complete a******s. As I wrote after a visit on Feb. 1, 2022:Ski Ward, 25 miles southwest, makes Nashoba Valley look like Aspen. A single triple-chair rising 220 vertical feet. A T-bar beside that. Some beginner surface lifts lower down. Off the top three narrow trails that are steep for approximately six feet before leveling off for the run-out back to the base. It was no mystery why I was the only person over the age of 14 skiing that evening.Normally my posture at such community- and kid-oriented bumps is to trip all over myself to say every possible nice thing about its atmosphere and mission and miraculous existence in the maw of the EpKonasonics. But this place was awful. Like truly unpleasant. My first indication that I had entered a place of ingrained dysfunction was when I lifted the safety bar on the triple chair somewhere between the final tower and the exit ramp and the liftie came bursting out of his shack like he'd just caught me trying to steal his chickens. “The sign is there,” he screamed, pointing frantically at the “raise bar here” sign jutting up below the top station just shy of unload. At first I didn't realize he was talking to me and so I ignored him and this offended him to the point where he – and this actually happened – stopped the chairlift and told me to come back up the ramp so he could show me the sign. I declined the opportunity and skied off and away and for the rest of the evening I waited until I was exactly above his precious sign before raising the safety bar.All night, though, I saw this b******t. Large, aggressive, angry men screaming – screaming – at children for this or that safety-bar violation. The top liftie laid off me once he realized I was a grown man, but it was too late. Ski Ward has a profoundly broken customer-service culture, built on bullying little kids on the pretext of lift safety. Someone needs to fix this. Now.Look, I am not anti-lift bar. I put it down every time, unless I am out West and riding with some version of Studly Bro who is simply too f*****g cool for such nonsense. But that was literally my 403rd chairlift ride of the season and my 2,418th since I began tracking ski stats on my Slopes app in 2018. Never have I been lectured over the timing of my safety-bar raise. So I was surprised. But if Ski Ward really wants to run their chairlifts with the rulebook specificity of a Major League Baseball game, all they have to do is say, “Excuse me, Sir, can you please wait to get to the sign before raising your bar next time?” That would have worked just as well, and would have saved them this flame job. For a place that caters to children, they need to do much, much better. On Uphill New EnglandWe go pretty deep on the purpose and utility of the Uphill New England pass, which allows you to skin up and ski down these 13 ski areas:On the Granite Backcountry AllianceSutner also mentions the Granite Backcountry Alliance, which is a group that promotes backcountry skiing in New Hampshire and Western Maine. Here's the group's self-described mission:New Hampshire and Western Maine are blessed with a rich ski history that includes a deep heritage of backcountry skiing from Mt. Washington's Tuckerman Ravine to the many ski trails developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) of the 1930's (some of which still remain today). The celebration of the sport of skiing is embedded in the culture of the area. While backcountry skiing's resurgence has captivated a new user base, it is also now a measurable, undeniable force in the industry and is the fastest growing segment of the sport. The demand is strong but the terrain in New Hampshire and Western Maine is limited by the tree density, glade supply, and legal access to the forests and mountains.GBA resolves to improve the playing field for backcountry skiers. Creating and developing ski glades, however, is not the only objective of the group. Improving the foundation of the sport is critical to future success, such as creating partnerships and collaboration with public and private landowners, education regarding safety and ecological awareness, and creating a unified culture – one that respects the land and its owners and does not permit unauthorized cutting. We are part of a movement of human-powered activities that is the basis for an emerging outdoor economy. We believe this movement has broad implications on areas like NH's North Country and it can develop with committed folks like yourself .  It's the last frontier!  So join us by stepping up to support the cause; the ability to organize is a powerful tool to steward our own future. On the proposed Stowe-Smuggs gondola connectionI wrote a bit about the proposed gondola connection between Stowe and Smugglers' Notch earlier this year:Seated just a half mile from the top of Smuggs' mainly intermediate Sterling Mountain is the top of Stowe's Spruce Peak. Skiers had been skating between the two resorts for decades. Why not connect the two mountains – both widely considered among the best ski areas in New England – with a fast, modern lift? A sort of Alta-Snowbird – or at least a Solitude-Brighton – of the East? Two owners, one interconnected ski experience.“We have the possibility of creating what we think will be a very unique ski and riding experience by connecting these two resorts,” said Stritzler. “I don't believe in marketing this way, but all you have to do is do trail counts and acreage and elevations, and pretty soon you get to the conclusion that if you can offer Smugglers' guests the opportunity to also take advantage of what Stowe has to offer, and you can offer the two in some kind of combination through a connecting lift, well, now suddenly you're not quite so nervous about all the consolidation taking place, because you've got something to respond with.”Here's the proposed line:Smuggs later withdrew their plans amid a cool reception from state officials. Resort officials are recalibrating their strategy in backrooms, they've told me, re-analyzing the project from an economic-impact point of view. More to come on that.On the Little Cottonwood Canyon gondolaWithout question, the most contentious ski-related development in North America right now is the proposed Little Cottonwood Canyon gondola, which would essentially remove most cars from a cluttered, avalanche-prone road and move the resort base area down below the major snowline. Various protest groups, however, are acting as though this is a proposal to bulldoze the mountains and replace them private mud baths for billionaires. Personally, I think the gondola makes a hell of a lot of sense:But every time I write about it on Twitter, a not-immaterial number of perfectly sane individuals advises me to f**k off and die, so I'd say there's some emotion invested in this one.On the Attitash triple replacementSutner and I go pretty deep on Attitash swapping out its Summit Triple chair for a brand-new high-speed quad. I also discussed this extensively with Attitash GM Brandon Swartz on a recent podcast episode (starting at 6:12):On Ski Inc.We touch briefly on Ski Inc., a fantastic history of the modern ski industry by the late Chris Diamond. If you like this newsletter, Ski Inc. and its sequel, Ski Inc. 2020, are must-reads.On Wachusett's liftsWe discuss Wachusett's proposed upgrade of the Polar Express from a high-speed quad to, perhaps, a six-pack. Here's the trailmap for context:On Wachusett's blocked expansionDespite its immense popularity, Wachusett is probably stuck in its current footprint indefinitely, as Sutner and I discuss. A bit more context from New England Ski History:As the 1993-94 season progressed, Wachusett pushed forward with its expansion plans, requesting to cut two new trails, widen Balance Rock, install a second chairlift to the summit, expand the base lodge, and add 375 parking spots. The plans were met with environmental, archaeological, and water quality concerns. …In August 1995, environmentalists located a stand of 295-year-old oak trees where Wachusett had planned to cut a new expert trail. Though the Crowleys quickly offered to adjust plans to minimize impact, opposition mounted. Plans for the new trail were abandoned a few months later. …In the spring of 1998, Wachusett proposed a scaled back expansion that avoided the old growth forest and instead called for the construction of a snowboard park consisting of two trails and a lift. Around this time, environmentalists announced the discovery of bootleg ski trails on the mountain. The Sierra Club quickly called for the state to terminate Wachusett Mountain Associates' ski area lease, despite not knowing who did the cutting. So, yeah, 99 problems, Man.On two Le Massifs (de Charlevoix and de Sud)So apparently there are two Le Massifs in Quebec, which would have been handy context to have when I wrote about the larger of the two joining the Mountain Collective last year. "Generally, what we're talking about here is unregulated (or lightly regulated), uninsured investors, LLCs, Funds and privately controlled “Shadow Banking” assets. In 2021, these OFI Assets scattered around the planet amounted to $152.0 Trillion (Again, not including China's non reported OFI) or roughly 172 x JP Morgan's relatively miniscule $884 Billion of Cash and Equivalents immediately available to liquidate/sell/wire-out without generating a FASB 115 loss. I hope this simple calculation puts the JP Morgan/Chase “fortress like” Balance Sheet in perspective. JP Morgan/Chase, America's biggest bank, through our own, expansive, monetary policy, has become but a pimple on the global financial system's buttocks." – DTIPO Today we dive into a really fascinating thought experiment on the Western Financial System from an adversarial position. Has the West become too arrogant to assume that no one would attack them? That because of their sheer size, they are protected? That they are "indispensable" in such a way that no wealthy nation could or would attack them, even as they use their monetary system explicitly as a weapon against competitor nations? Nations, in fact, that may have a large interest in seeing the Western system implode? What if we run the numbers and see what that risk really is... Could this round determine the Champion of this seasons SLGR? First, we start with the playouts where a plucky Lamia is picking up points left right and centre and pulling themselves away from the relegation zone. OFI finishing off strong, Panetolikos are thinking about their summer holidays. Anyone can still go down so there's much to play for. Then to the crazy round of Playoff matches where we see Panathinaikos drop points to Volos at home and miss a late late 98th min penalty to add insult to injury. A plucky AEK do a smash and grab job in Thessaloniki with their 1-0 win, which in the context of this round was the best result. Olympiakos... 2-0 up and coasting end up having a 2-2 draw, and all hell breaks loose with Michel handing in his resignation straight afterwards, and Canos confirming it'll be a long shot that he returns to action this season.
